Finally got a chance to try this place with guest chef Ro in the house and delivering something special. We started with what the ground remembered: a salad with heirloom tomatoes and bing cherries with whipped ricotta and it had that sweet tango was that you didn't know you crave. The Smoke and Soil dish of lamb chops with mojo rojo and fried potatoes was also excellent with the lamb tender and flavorful. We had other dishes from creations of prior chefs which were also top shelf. The best of all is that this helps to support the community with all the services Hands On Hartford offers. we dined in a few weeks ago while visiting CT for the first time and we really enjoyed our experience here! the server was incredibly friendly and attentive. the food was delicious and well priced especially for the large servings they provide (almost too large lol) my only issue is that they don't always have a vegan entree and the vegetarian entree option was sold out, so i was only able to order appetizers. the vegan caesar salad was absolutely delicious.. maybe the best i've ever had! would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a unique dining experience. if we're ever in CT again, we'll definitely be back :) read more

Gather55 is a Hands-On Hartford initiative that is part of its commitment to serving neighbors, engaging volunteers, and connecting communities in the Hartford area. Diners may participate by paying the full posted price of the meals or a minimum price of three dollars, or they may choose to volunteer with Hands-On Hartford. Additionally, the chefs are rotated every month to give back to the community. Gather 55 has a pre-fix menu, and you get an appetizer, main course, and dessert for fifty-five dollars. I ordered the Milanese Pork Chop with Arugula. It also came with grilled lemon. The Pork Chop was beautifully cooked and had great flavor. The Pork Chop was crispy and not overcooked. The grilled Lemon brought the Pork Chop to another level. The grilled lemon gave the pork chops a nice pop and brought more flavor out of the pork chops. The Argula was cooked to perfection. It tasted great, and you could tell that the grilled Lemon was squeezed into the Argula while it was cooking. The food was fabulous. In addition, it's unlike any restaurant I've ever been to. My first visit to Gather55 wasn't my first visit to the building, because back in the early '90's I was here during its Spaghetti Warehouse and Trout Brook Brewery days. Gather55 is so unusual because of its innovative and visionary business model. For breakfast and lunch, it opens the doors to the underprivileges or those struggling within the community for "pay what you can" meals. Those that have zero dollars are assigned a task in the restaurant and working for a half hour or so will earn you a meal. In the evening, the white tablecloths come out and Gather55 becomes a high-end restaurant with weekly guest chefs, and the revenue raised from these pricey dinners subsidizes the breakfasts and lunches. We started off with a few glasses of wine for around $10 a glass. The menu suggested pairings to go along with the evening's five appetizers and four entrees. The dishes were all created by different chefs including some heavy hitting familiar names like Chef Billy Grant and Chef Tyler Anderson. The appetizers were priced between $14-$18, the entrees between $28-$32, and the desserts were all $11. They also offer a 3 Course Prix Fixe Menu for $55 with your choice of salad or appetizer, entree, and dessert. Our appetizers were: Tom Yum Noodles $15 with chili paste, coconut milk, bok choy, bean sprout, Chinese cabbage, peanut, scallion, and lime Crispy Yucca Rellenos $14 (Vegetarian) Chef Jeremy Williams yucca, herbed cheese, aji verde sauce Kale Caesar Salad $14 with parmesan, lemon, and crispy garbanzos. Two of us went with the Tom Yum Noodles, including yours truly. It was a dish by this month's Guest Chef Lapat Watrous of Aroy Thai Garden in Middletown, and she created a helluva delicious starter. It was an amazing combination of tastes, textures and an amazing sauce that reminded me a lot of Panang Curry. Our main courses were: Salmon en Papillote $32 (GF) with potatoes, leeks, fresh herbs, cooked in parchment paper Stuffed Eggplant & Kale $28 with vadouvan, beans, tomato agrodulce, and fregola Pork Chop Milanese $29 with arugula, parmesan, lemon beurre blanc Lobster Ravioli ($18 from the appetizer menu) with tarragon mascarpone cream, and roasted hazelnuts. I had the eggplant dish and had to scurry to my phone to find out what some of the exotic ingredients were. I learned that vadouvan is a French spice blend, tomato agrodolce is an Italian sweet and sour sauce, and fregola is a teeny tiny pasta very similar to couscous. It was the creation of Chef Tim East of West Hartford's Union Kitchen, and it was delicious. The presentation was gorgeous, rollatini style spirals of eggplant topped with bits of kale, topped with the pasta and beans all swimming in a bed of fantastic tomato sauce. We had coffees and split two desserts - Chef Tyler Anderson's Brown Sugar Budino (an egg custard) with brown sugar, maple, and cocoa nibs, and Chef Kristin Eddy's Flourless Chocolate Torte with bourbon, orange, crème fraiche, and black pepper. I had a forkful of each, and they were both fantastic. You really have to tip your hat to Rob Maffucci and his talented group of collaborators for putting together such an innovative effort to serve the community and offer a wonderful dining experience. We went to gather 55 yesterday for a give back birthday dinner, where all proceeds go to hands on Hartford .. which I thought was fantastic idea. It's a great way to give back to the community while having a nice dinner out. Furthermore, the menu constantly changes as they switch out the chef every month . So more reason to keep going back . I must say gather 55 is worth all the 5 stars The food was top quality with fresh ingredients and tasted like I was at a fancy restaurant! And the staff was amazing too and has a nice and cozy atmosphere I got the rose sangria which I loved And the three course meal for $55 which included an appetizer, entree and dessert . Appetizer I got the lobster ravioli which was the best I ever had Entree I got the stuffed eggplant. This was one of my all time favourite vegetarian dishes And dessert was the flourless chocolate tarte ( I was too full to appreciate this fully but it was presented beautifully and tasted good ) My husband got the Thai noodles ( which was amazing .. I have been to several dinners at Gather55 and each time i am blown away at the monthly chef selection and the menu that they put forth. there are not many places that you can get a top tier 3 course meal for a reasonable price. And the best part (beside the food) is that anyone who puts in a reservation can indicate that they can only pay x amount of dollars and they will still be able to have a reservation - such a great way to expose so many people to high quality food. read more

They also have great food with a rotating menu and nice ambiance, and generally is a nice, clean place with cool art and a cute vibe. Last night I had dinner with my friend after seeing that Ashley Flagg from the Laurel was the guest chef for this month. We were greeted warmly, given bread and butter to start, and our server kindly explained their mission. We both ordered the prix fixe menu for $55 which included an appetizer, entree and dessert and loved all the dishes. The pasta bolognese was perfectly al dente and with a rich, flavorful sauce. The ghanian peanut stew chicken was great-- chicken was tender with a crispy skin, and the peanut sauce was subtle and the sweet potatoes really came through more. The flatbread was also warm, crispy and added a yummy texture. My friend enjoyed her tom yum soup and tagliatelle as well. My flourless torte was rich and chocolately, but slightly on the drier side. The menu changes I believe each month. To start we got fresh warm bread served with house made maple sesame butter. To die for! When I went I got the kale Caesar salad for my app, then the lomo saltado for my entree and flourless chocolate cake for desserts. Everything was delicious. The beef was very tender and flavorful. I've been curious to check out Gather55 since I first learned of their unique concept, and I'm so glad my fiancé and I were finally able to visit! The food from guest chef Tom Kaldy was delicious, and we liked that they had a mix of dishes from past guest chefs which featured a wide variety of flavors. Their prix fixe price is reasonable, and it's nice that the servers don't accept tips, but rather donations for Hands on Hartford. Such a cool way to try different dishes from top CT chefs while also supporting this awesome non-profit. Gather55 is a social enterprise located in Hartford near Parkville Market and Witchhouse Tattoo. They have an amazing model where you can either pay full price, pay what you can (minimum $2) or volunteer for 30 minutes. All of the staff I interacted with were extremely welcoming and friendly. The service was a bit slow; it took 40+ minutes for my table to receive our food, but it was very busy and I assume a lot of the staff are volunteers. Even at full price, the food is very affordable and the portion sizes are generous. I enjoyed my pancakes a lot. They were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and not too sweet. read more

If you're lucky you will have the pleasure of being served by Ryan and greeted and hosted by Raymond. I honestly don't know if there's a way to be unlucky coming here though! Despite the wide coverage these two individuals provide for the restaurant, there's no shortage of tireless hospitality and sincere attentiveness. Their enthusiastic service really made our dining experience special, and complemented the care the kitchen put into each dish wonderfully. The layer of flavors in the shrimp entree were most outstanding. Meanwhile the textures in the eggplant entree played together very well. The desserts were all plated nicely. The chocolate torte texture was a little unexpected at first, but paired well with the crème fraiche. The orange zest was a nice contrast, but I'd probably prefer an orange-infused crème fraiche to the fresh orange and candied zest to more easily deliver the pairing of already-sweet chocolate with zippy orange zest without the addition of more sweetness. Overall, the food and ambiance were certainly worth coming back for, and the old school cordial customer service makes this restaurant a precious gem to impress guests or treat friends and family with. read more

I have taken out lunch from here. Pay what you want concept is pretty new to me. I paid the full menu price. The restaurant does a good job in helping the community. When I was there, I met a reporter who travelled from the next state to study the concept. A lot of people I saw inside the restaurant were very poor. The staff seem to be volunteers. What they lack in experience, they make up in the pride they take in the cause. Curry chicken was an excellent entree. It looks very colorful, tasted good, was nutritious and the ingredients were fresh. G55 burger was decent. Side of fruit bowl was a nice touch of nutrition. You will love Hibiscus sun drink if you love the ginger punch and the sorrel. PB + Janet was a good shake with peanut butter protien and the goodness of the fruits. The hostess welcomed me right away and brought me to my table where my party was waiting. Make sure you make reservations in advance because the seating area is very limited and check the hours online. All of our dishes were incredible and delivered on time . The food was so delicious and the chefs for last night came out to say hello and to ask about our meal . I ended up having the classic pasta bolognese for my first course! I know, I couldn't believe it either but it was served hot and probably the best bolognese I had in a very long time! For my entree I attempted to have the pork chop Milanese. I had never seen such a generous size of pork chops in my entire life. Served with arugula ( again very generous) and a very light dressing, perfect for spring. I couldn't finish because I was so full from the pasta and wanted to save room for dessert. I had to go with the tiramisu and was very happy with my choice! Third time is a winner...actually all were winners but the choice of menu items from four chefs was super! My favorite of the evening was the Soft Scrambled Egg (from chef Xavier Santiago) Grilled sourdough, garlic butter, romesco, almonds, sour cream. What a dreamy situation. The Braised Lamb Tangine (by chef Emily Mingrone) was a great zinger with basmati rice, vadouvan cream, cilantro and mint. I can still taste the dessert by Chef Santiago of a yogurt creme brulee with mixed berries, basil granola crunch. What a wonderful evening with a full house. I will be back next week on Friday to try some of the other offerings and can't wait. read more

Constant we had the most delicious sourdough bread with maple sesame butter...yummmm I could have just had spoons of the butter. Then we shared the bolognese and it was so tasty. The pasta was cooked perfectly. For the main course I ordered the Pork Chop Milanese and it was so good. My husband had the Coq Au Vin which was the signature menu item from the guest chef of the month. He said it was the bomb! Food is made to order, so food allergies and preferences were easily accommodated. Some menu items change monthly which is fun too. It's wine and beer only. But was is behind this amazing restaurant is how it supports Hands on Hartford which helps the hungry and unhoused. It's a really special place. Beautiful antique features inside which made the ambiance lovely. You don't tip, per se, but a 20% charge is added which is a donation. We did "tip" which just became an added donation. There was a big group of about 8 sitting at the next table from us, and they were laughing and chatting loudly, but my husband and I were still able to have a quiet conversation. All of the staff were professional and friendly. We had questions about the menu and the waitress was very knowledgeable. The food was excellent. I took a chance and had pickled beets with ricotta (I had no idea if I like beets or not, but they were good). I had trout for my main course and something that I don't remember the name of for dessert. I ended up taking half of my trout home, because the portions were pretty large. I should have written a review weeks ago for their daytime menu, but after also enjoying their evening meal I HAD to get to Yelp ASAP! The daytime Gather55 cafe is an amazing place. The restaurant has a pay-what-you-can model which means everyone can join and dine in dignity! I paid full price happily and got an amazingly large, fresh, well-adorned Greek salad. The next time I visited I got their pancakes, bacon, and fruit. Again, so tasty and wonderful portions. The staff is out of control awesome and I learned that there are volunteers there every day giving their time as servers. How cool is that? On to our meal last night. My husband had what he calls 'the best bolognese I've ever had' as his starter (the man has had a LOT of bolognese in his day) and I ate a VERY tasty chicken piccata dish which gave me all the warmth of an authentic german meal with perfect homemade pasta. I also loved the cioppino and I am not even a cioppino person but something called me to it! Apparently the evening menu has been created by these badass local chefs - we are talking James Beard nominee-level people. We left a tip that doesn't go to their servers but to help fund the kitchen, pantry, and Hands-on Hartford programs. Don't worry, the servers said they are very well taken care of. My mom and I don't spend time with each other as much as we'd like and she and I weren't sure where to eat after a long day out and about together... We know of so many great places in the West Hartford/ Hartford area but she wanted to go somewhere new, small and cozy. When I found Gather55 on google and I just shot my shot because I had never been here before either. I will be coming to this restaurant forever now ! It is really a place to try for anyone who loves the art of cuisine. So creative, so chill and our server Lorenzo was top tier ! He was super knowledgeable, efficient and warm. I've been wanting to eat here for the past few months and finally got a chance. It was even better than I expected. First, the concept is fantastic--rotating chefs (now I have to eat here once a month just to explore the new menu) and having the gratuity go to the pay what you can program. Love it! I would have eaten here just for that but to top it off the food was amazing! Everything, I mean everything was delicious. We had the beet salad, the crab cake, the pork chops, the salmon, and the bread pudding and oatmeal cookie. Needless to say we were full, in heart & stomach, but we just could stop eating. Every single bite was just delicious. Can't wait to go back. Regrettably, I only have pictures of the bread and appetizers, when I still had some control over myself.
