I stopped in here the other weekend, and the place was packed to the gills with knitters. It was sort of like being the new kid in a crowded school cafeteria: everyone was already in the middle of their projects and conversations. That's cool; maybe next time I'm there I'll have enough room to pull up a chair and chat. But what REALLY felt awkward was that nobody working at the store greeted me or acknowledged my presence. Just a quick "hi, welcome" would have sufficed. Is there a clique already forming, or was it just a very busy day? I browsed on my own for a bit, but half of the yarn selection was effectively blocked off by a clump of knitters. I'd like to see the area organized to simultaneously accommodate shoppers and people hanging out. The fabric selection is great, with a lot of cute prints, and they have plenty of buttons, wool felt, and other great things. I've been hoping for a good sewing store around here, and this doesn't disappoint. I will come back, and I hope after my next visit I can give a five-star review. I think this place has a lot of potential, and it's already got a good fanbase, but I just didn't get the friendly and welcoming feel I was hoping for. read more

Gather Here is awesome! My friend and I came and bought our Halloween fabric and zippers here. Half way through making our costumes, we realized that our zippers were too long and our sewing machine broke..a true Halloween disaster! Luckily, Gather Here rents out sewing machine and has a really nice staff. The staff helped with their sewing machine and taught me how to shorten the zipper. As I worked, they kept coming over and checking up on me to make sure I was ok. The whole afternoon passed by pleasantly and I finished the costumes. The machines were only $10/hour so it was relatively cheap. I will definitely come here again when I want to work on my next sewing project! read more

I'll start off by saying that I am a new knitter. After finishing my first project, I went to Gather Here to purchase yarn and supplies for my next project. I was deeply disappointed in the lack of customer service as well as the yarn on hand. I gave the shop another chance this past weekend and had the same lackluster experience. I guess you need to be a part of the "community" to get good service. I have since found where I will be shopping for my knitting supplies and am thoroughly pleased with my find. read more

pros: this store is lovely. the fabrics are beautiful and great for quilting or making clothing. it has a lot of cottons and some silks too. it has a lot of top quality yarns. i would not go here for cheap or discounted cloth/yarn. so the items are a little pricier but they are also of higher quality. cons: i have gone to 2 classes here as a beginner/intermediate sewer. one class was sewing and one was quilting. i was a little disappointed. the other students were nice and happy to be there but the instructors left something missing. i wanted to learn more to be able to go home and replicate it on my own- but questions were left unanswered. i wish the instructors were more welcoming to questions and better at teaching technique. read more

Great new venue, but the two stars are for some of the staff. They aren't helpful to newbies, and as a teacher myself (of other things), I know how frustrating it can be to work with beginners. But, really? If they want to build their community, the newbies are the ones with time and energy and money to spend there, so I'm hoping they won't act as if it is such a burden to help beginners and that they won't continue to snicker behind our backs. Otherwise, great selections of yarn, and fantastic new space. read more

Yes, my mom and I were 10 minutes late and yes we wanted to choose our own fabrics for our $60 a person zipper bag private class. But the consumer mistakes end there. We came ready for a day of sewing fun. When we arrived 10 minutes late and spewing plenty of apologies it became clear that our teacher Sammy, whispering with the other two staff people, wasn't in the mood for salutations or our gingerly request ed option to choose our own fabric (again, I understand the annoyance of such a request when timing is an issue but for $60 a bag/per person I wasn't going to make one out of material I didn't love). I completely understand the importance of timeliness in such a setting as other classes begin after we are done but 10 minutes didn't warrant the reception we received and certainly could have been accommodated by some thoughtful readjustments by a flexible and costumer friendly staff (i.e. making a less time intensive bag or the warning that we might have to finish our bags on our own). None of these or similar options were given and so with all three pairs of half rolled eyes on us, we chose not to make our bags with the help of a curt and obviously angered staff. My mom suggested we make something together on the rentable machines and our inquiry was promptly and curtly met with , "you'd have to pay for two people even though you would only be using one machine. Sorry, it's policy". Woo, ok who said anything about the cost or the use of only one machine. With that sweet and customer centric (i kid) response, we left. I now have a new found respect for Joanne's Fabrics and my mom's do-it-yourself-screw-the-clubbish-hipster-only-craft store-mentality. They may gather some....but they just lost one. read more

I went in looking for some specific fabric types. They have a lot of printed cottons and not much else. No-one at the front counter and one person teaching people how to sew. When I asked her if I could ask her a question about the fabric stock, her reply was, "Well, I'm teaching a class right now," implying that I shouldn't have been bothering her. They seem to like dealing with people who don't know anything. If you go there and already know what you want, be prepared for some serious attitude. As in "Why are you bothering me?" read more

This is a dream come true for me. I have been so frustrated by the selection of fabrics around here that I always buy online. The space is gorgeous, inspiring, and cozy. It makes you want to just sit and stay there all day crafting. The selection of fabrics, and supplies is fabulous and they have 100% wool felt! Imagine that. You have to go check it out! This place has totally made my MONTH! I will be a frequent customer. read more

I've only been in here a handful of times but that's only because I know every time I walk in there I'm gonna have to buy a bunch of stuff because everything is so cute and I get a billion ideas for new projects. People may complain that it's a little expensive but it's really high quality, hand-picked stuff so quit whining! The staff is really sweet and helpful and seem genuinely excited to help you out. I was pretty bummed that the cute bag pattern I really wanted was written all in Japanese though. :( Definitely a great place for a crafty pro or novice to get some advice and walk out with everything you need! read more

I love this store. They have beautiful fabrics, a great selection of yarns and lots of fun miscellany (random buttons!). I have been in several times (already!) with kids in tow and have found it warm and welcoming. The staff answered our questions, helped us find the tools we needed, and gave us advice on our project ... and even asked my kids to bring in their finished projects to show when they are complete (cue beaming children). Love it. This shop definitely fills a need in Cambridge. read more

I LOVE this store. It's so cute and just being in the store makes me happy. They have loads of beautiful unique fabrics, not just patterns of flowers but also bicycles, umbrellas, and other cute things. It's not as cheap as other stores in Boston, but it looks like good quality to me and they're just so pretty! I've taken part 1 of 2 in a skirt class, and I love it! The atmosphere in the place is so happy, the teacher sets a great tone of friendliness and fun. Most importantly, I am learning to sew! It's a fast-paced class and the class isn't made to teach you sewing terms, but really just how to make the specific project. Nevertheless, I read over the instructions after class to match the terms with what we did so i could learn and apply it to other projects. Definitely signing up for more classes and buying more fabrics from this store! read more

This place is awesome!! They have so much beautiful fabric. There is nowhere else in Boston that you can buy such pretty designer patterns. The shop is clean and the owner is so nice. You can rent time on the sewing machines and there's an area with couches where you can knit and chat. There's even a fridge and coffee/tea. I want to move in! read more

I've been to Gather Here a number of times with my daughter who is a regular at their Saturday morning groups. This was my first time in their new space. They have probably tripled their space and along with it their selection of yarns, fabric and goodies. We were there in "Small Business Saturday" and the shop was buzzing with customers taking advantage of a sale. Staff helpful and pleasant. I always find something to add to my "stash" and I know that if I need a special tool or advice, I can get it there! Great place. read more

I made a point of stopping here when I was in Boston this past summer. I expected to purchase yarn, but I was so enamored by the fun prints that I spent my entire budget on fabric! Gather Here has a knowledgable staff and interesting and varied supplies. Definitely worth a look! read more

after feeling like i may have been discriminated against because of my age, i found a great sewing instructor!!!! sara is the best! she made sure that EVERYONE understood. she remembers names, is caring and nurturing. she knows her stuff and is fantastic. i couldnt be happier. i have always felt that the customer service was very good! read more

Love this place! I've already taken one class and can't wait to sign up for another! Virginia, Noah and Liz are awesome...super friendly and really knowledgeable. The store is laid out well, has just enough supplies to get your creative juices flowing, but not enough to overwhelm you. Is it going to have everything? There's no doubt that this place has some beautiful fabrics, but it's overpriced and the staff seemed oddly unfriendly. I'll definitely be back again whenever I really need something, but it doesn't seem like the kind of place you want to hang out in. read more

Gather Here is the perfect blend of fabric, yarn, and crafty fun. When I visited the store for the first time a few weeks ago, it was as if the owner had reached into my mind and created the store with all my favorite things. I am a sewer and quilter first, and the space is filled with hard to find Japanese fabrics, liberty prints and other dressmaking or quilting wonders. The yarns are just as tempting, with a wonderful selection of hand dyes. The store is quite organized with charming small displays and as a former visual merchandiser I always notice and appreciate that. The staff treated me and everyone else in the store at the time like royalty. There are squishy couches for relaxing and hanging out. I want to come here every day, but alas, I live in California. I will happily visit next time I am in town. read more

Wonderful! I was looking for a place that offered classes on crafts. Took two classes this weekend, both were in very groups with lots of individual attention. The crochet basics class didn't officially teach half double crochet and triple crochet, but the teacher was very nice and happy to take time to show me. She also seemed happy to give tips outside of class. I left able to read and follow a crochet pattern, and with a crochet hook and some unused yarn. Second class was needle felting, and instructor was also very nice, and I wound up with a cute little fox and some felting paraphernalia. The staff were all very nice and helpful. It really is a stitch LOUNGE, and I get the feeling that if I wanted to come and hang out while doing handicrafts I would be welcome to. read more

I was in the shop this fall and only now discovered that there is a Yelp. While I will agree with everyone about how great the supplies are, I was not impressed by the attitude of the owner. I walked in and was greeted by a guy at the counter- seemed nice, gave me the background of the store, and pointed out the owner, who was teaching a class at the time. I poked around a bit, trying to not get in the way of the class. I went over to snag a cookie in the kitchen area, and overheard the owner talking with the guy at the counter. She was talking about one of the women in the class. She said that she was a "f****ing idiot" who didn't know what she was doing and was holding the class back. She continued to say things about how "stupid" this customer was until she had to return to the class. I can understand being frustrated- but I don't think it is okay to say things about your customers while they are there and other people are in the store. The fact that she said this during business hours about a paying customer who was probably easily paying $100 to learn a fun new craft really bothers me and seems extremely unprofessional. read more

This store is beautiful and has nice selection but the owners are horrible at customer service. Seeing the response to Cindy's review in June just confirmed all negative experiences I have had there, and stopped me from shopping there yesterday. Yes, those complaints have flaws, but what business owner responds that way?! I've been a customer for a couple of years, purchased a Bernina, usually visit a few times a month. The owners always ignore me, I am rarely approached even when it's obvious i'm searching for something. If you are a friend of the owners, then they love you, but if you are an outsider, then they have no time for you. They can say "everyone is welcome!" but I have never felt welcome. Maybe I'm not diverse enough for them, maybe they don't like my well-mannered toddler, whatever it is, I am clearly not welcomed. I really can't wait for a competitor to open a store in the area. Until then, I'll be taking my machine to a store 45 min away and buying my fabric online. I'm sure the owners can be lovely people, I just can't support them anymore and subject myself to bad experiences there. read more

This place is a gem. I have been sewing for 30 years and buy my fabrics from all over the world, from Dubai to HongKong to NewYork (B and J and moods fabric), spain, paris, Italy, name it. I finally found the place where I can buy my favorite linen and cotton. They are so much better than any fabric stores I have bought fabrics from. Sales personnel are so helpful. The quality of fabric is top notch. Lovely selection of linen and cotton and double gauze. It is a heaven for people who have good taste in buying fabric and being stylish. The prices are so reasonable. Couple of people told me that the fabrics are expensive. Actually for what they sell the prices are really reasonable and very much affordable. JoAnn's fabric sells their plastic fabrics much more expensive than this place. I hope this place will last as long as I live in Boston. Thank you for opening up a high quality fabric store.
