The original class was great - very competent and knowledgeable teacher, she was professional, kind and caring - great mix of ability and personality. I did a multi hour private class for which I paid a premium, I felt OK about it and good about my decision afterwards. I planned on returning to continue with the same teacher, however when I called to arrange, I was told that the teacher had been dismissed. The lady I spoke with explained that the dismissal was not for ability or quality of teaching, that the studio ensured the quality of teaching always met the studios high standards. When pushed however I was told that the dismissal came as a surprise to other staff members, but was also not a surprise as the studio owner requires 'yes' teachers to all requests, and that he is VERY commercially minded. This teacher was clearly NOT a yes person, just very competent and a thoroughly nice person! What also surprised me was the extent to which she supported the studio, despite what seems to have been one way from the owner! So a very disappointing conclusion, maybe I will be able to arrange private classes with her, but for anyone considering the studio for classes - buyer beware and don't believe the very believable owner who will say anything to get the business and revenue. It's a shame he behaves in this way, but I strongly believe it can only be the start of the end for the studio read more

I love that in the summer they have like courses for young elementary school students where you can chose single half day courses or full day so your not tied into it. I loved the flexibility and ease of it. My daughter loves it and learned a lot. She is excited to come back. read more

What an excellent resource for creative and prospective creative types. Brian does excellent classes for kids and adults. Our daughter (age 6) started in last week and left her first class with her first creation a pillow. She was so proud. Her second week she made a narwhal stuffy and what was neat was that she walked right in and started on the sewing machine. She remembered her lesson and was so excited to make something. We are so impressed and she is so thrilled that we purchased a group of lessons (discount of 25% if you book 8 classes). Class sizes are kept small and the kids get lots of personalized attention. We have been sending our two boys to newton sewing studio to partake in their camp offerings for the past few years. We were definitely skeptical about our boys' enjoyment of the studio as they are not generally into arts and crafts. The first day we picked up our oldest, he was so happy and couldn't wait to go back. Brian has done a great job creating an environment that is inclusive, engaging and welcoming to a wide range of students. Recently, due to coronavirus, we reached out to Brian because I was looking for masks to wear around my family as I am on the front lines in the hospital. He was so great and helpful and generous with his time and skill set. The masks were awesome and I was also looking for a reusable surgical cap to wear at the hospital. What a great experience! As an adult I wanted to sew up some Christmas gifts so I stopped in and am so happy I discovered this place. The owner and Ky his assistant as so patient and will help you with whatever you are interested in. In my case I came in with a pattern.They open at 1:00 and that's a quiet time so I got plenty of one on one instruction and then the kids started to come in a few hours later. They do a wonderful job with the kids. I enjoyed working on my project while listening to the kids laughter and the school aged conversations going on around me...priceless! Don't be thrown off by the rainbows and unicorns. The staff are all experts with whatever you want to do. I do suggest, as an adult to go in at at 1:00 as it is quieter. I also suggest you call advance, but not necessary, so they can have the perfect machine set up for your project. read more

This review is for Brian's ability and willingness to help me troubleshoot my sewing machine virtually. I texted Brian a question about my sewing machine, which was making a loud noise while making masks to donate to local hospitals. Brian texted back and forth with me for probably 20 minutes, asking questions and responding to photos that I sent. He was able to help diagnose the issue, and identified the part that needed to be replaced. He went so far as to suggest I look on ebay for reasonably priced parts. I haven't shopped here, and was blown away by Brian's helpfulness and kindness - a really great reminder that there is a lot of good in the world. After calling Brian to warn him that I and my two daughters were coming by soon for the free orientation class, we landed at Newton Sewing Studio after finding some parking in the very busy lot which is surrounded by lots of businesses. My younger daughter was reluctant - thinks sewing is too girly girl for her taste - but after seeing the studio, and the machines, and picking out skull fabric for her pillow, she was all over it. Brian was terrific with all of us, and with the ability to patiently trust kids (and adults) to experiment and fail, all the while reassuring us that it doesn't need to be perfect and it would all come out fine (and it did). We all left with an understanding of how the machine works and our very own pillow. Love the flexibility they are offering for camps, sharing lessons, and drop-ins. I came in late, very close to closing time, and was still greeted with a warm smile! Brian was patient in helping me get started on my first project. Having never done anything like this before, he was kind and instructive in helping me finish my first craft! Over two years ago I was driving on North St. and saw the Newton Sewing Studio sign. I was intrigued and decided to stop in and find out what it was about. Brian greeted me warmly and has coached and collaborated with me in accomplishing sewing projects since. They have been as simple as hemming several pairs of pants... to making a fleece snugglie with a unique embroidered patch for a baby shower gift (see posted photos)... to customizing ready-to-wear... to a Halloween costume... and yesterday I made a bow tie for a friend out of his beloved well-worn madras shirt. The web site and reviews focus on the studio being a place for children to learn how to sew. I want to say that it's also a place where an adult can do projects. I have found Brian to be thoughtful, patient and creative. He really knows the in's and out's of sewing. Maybe you'd like to create an item for someone instead of buying a gift card... maybe you don't find clothing in stores that expresses your personal style... maybe you would like to make items to donate to shelters like blankets or scarves... Brian will assist you with reaching a goal. I have been there during school hours when I was only one in the studio, and I have been there after school when there were many children ~ girls and boys. I have seen Brian work patiently with them and help them to think about how to do something. I consider this one of the skills / gifts of a good teacher. Also, in my opinion there is a lot of mindless electronic activity available to kids; it's refreshing to have something to offer that's hand's on in a much different way. A friend who has led her two daughters' scout troops for years was looking for new experiences for them. I told her about the studio; they booked time, and afterwards I heard great feedback about the experience. And oh, by the way, I happened to be there about 18 months ago the morning puppy Chester came to the studio for the first time. He has been there ever since... taking on the role of adorable little (maybe 8 lbs?) mascot. I have seen kids make clothes and toys for him. I don't have pets and enjoy holding him... getting a fluffy "fix" without the daily requirements of pet ownership. I imagine there are lots of parents who bring their kids to NSS and also appreciate this aspect too. read more

Beware of dog and unsympathetic owner: i wanted to like this place a lot. The reviews were glowing, the place was bright, the projects were cute and well thought out. I signed my daughter up for a 1/2 day of sewing camp and dropped her off all smiles. But I got a call from her a couple of hours later asking me to pick her up. Evidently the owner brings his dog to the studio and lets the dog roam free, and my daughter has a phobia of dogs. When she told the owner she was scared, he told her, "you'll get used to it." Despite having multiple rooms and a cage where he could have kept the dog for a couple of hours, he did nothing. The dog proceeded to bite one of the children and jumped up on the kids while they were eating their lunch. When I came to get my daughter and told the owner he really should have informed parents in advance if there would be a dog on the premises, he replied "there are pictures of the dog on my website." I'm working with my daughter on her dog phobia and she is making progress, but camp should have been a fun and relaxing experience. Instead she was stressed and upset and I had to juggle finding another caregiver for the week. I'm sure this place is great for a sewing class, but he shouldn't be running a camp. His inability to part with his dog to take proper care of one of the children entrusted to him for the day shows that he is unfit to be a caregiver. --In response to Brian's comment: My child actually wasn't hysterical. She just sat quietly fearful until I picked her up and we left; then she broke down into sobs. I have two primary concerns here: 1) parents should know in advance that there is a dog on the premises so they can make informed decisions. 2) at the very least you should have put the dog in a separate room and called me to let me know my daughter was afraid. The fact that you chose the dog's comfort over the child's shows bad judgement. Maybe not a big deal for a simple sewing class, but something to be concerned about when signing kids up for camp. read more

My 7 year old daughter has been asking for months and months to be signed up for a sewing class. Working a weekly class into our already busy schedule was too much of a challenge. After seeing the 4 hour intro class on Living Social, we thought that would be a perfect place to start. When I picked her up, she couldn't believe 4 hours had past and felt the the morning flew by. When we returned home, we brought out a sewing machine that had recently been given to us by a friend and I was so impressed that in 4 hours at Newton Sewing Studio, she learned how to independently use the machine! An amazing hidden gem! I had to do a last minute Halloween costume, and what could have felt like a chore ended being a fabulous, relaxing, creative, cathartic, fun afternoon! Brian was so so helpful and generous with his time and knowledge, and my project turned out 10x better than it would have if I had done it alone. It was inspiring and uplifting to see kids trickle in during the day and be super independent, confident, competent, creative, and happy working on their individualized projects. When my child is old enough to start here (5 years old is the minimum age), I'd really love this to be a regular activity. Very reasonable prices as well. Both the owner, Brian, and his helper, Kye, couldn't be nicer or more skilled at both sewing and teaching. I have made an outfit for my grandson & granddaughter and they both came out great. Usually, I do not bother with reviews...but I had to write one for this place because I feel so strongly about it. The original purpose of our trip to NewtonSewingStudio was because of my 9 year old; I researched many places (one in Arlington and another in Newton), but it always seem so complicated with orientation, never sewn before, timings, no one picking the phone up and so on... I googled sewing places and this one popped up, I called the place up, I got an answer and it seem so simple to go in and show up. I was expecting the worse regarding never sewn before, you need to come back and so on. Both my daughter and I were greeted politely by the owner Brian, we were on a machine within few minutes. No drama, Brian made it super easy, he showed us our way around, and at this point the price was not even discussed.. (he was SO laid back and not hung up on how long we will be there and how much it would cost) (I did have a general idea of what it would cost)...Anyways, it is a GREAT place, don't get thrown off by the parking lot and studio is cute, relaxing, fun and safe. My daughter is addicted to it and always wants to go back. It is a great confidence booster; you go there with nothing and come back with an end product that you made...all by yourself :). read more

My daughter has been going to Newton Sewing Studio since Kindergarten and she's now in second grade. What I love about this place is that unlike most adults, the owner doesn't think that kids have limits to their abilities. My daughter started sewing at age 6, I thought it was sweet that she could sew pillows and stuffed toys but then she wanted to make a dress. It never occurred to me that the owner (Brian) would actually let her take on that project, but the next thing I knew, she was coming home having started her dress! A few sessions later, she came home with it completed and it even had facing! She's worn it several times since and is always so proud to say she made her own dress! Another thing I liked about the studio is that they let the kids learn from their mistakes. I was there one day when she was sewing on a zipper and she didn't exactly follow directions as she had been shown. Being the almost-helicopter parent I am, I was about to correct her but Brian, the instructor, stopped me. He let her complete the line she was doing and then step back to take a look. Pulling out stitches (which only took a couple minutes) was a great way to learn that lesson on zipper installation. I am confident that in allowing them to make some mistakes, they learn lasting lessons. What a great life lesson and a message I took home too. The studio has a dog, (Chester) that my daughter loves to visit. He's so cute and friendly and she is always bummed when he's not there. We love this place and have great respect for the owner, Brian. He's great with the kids, unflappable and calm in the midst of the storm. I have been in when the studio is full and was amazed to see all the kids were focused and being productive. The staff does a great job of managing them all and makes sure they feel they've accomplished something and have learned something new. My daughter gave me a beautifully sewn pink heart-shaped pillow with an embroidered message for Christmas. She was so proud to have made it herself. The pride she feels in being productive and making things on her own is great for her sometimes shaky self esteem. She will probably never be the academic some of the kids at her school are, but she is an artist and this sewing studio is helping her to bring that gift out. read more

I brought my 6 year old kindergartener to learn to sew, and Brian was amazing. So patient and kind with her. I had been other places in the area and had tried one other session and the owner seemed to feel my daughter would be too much work since she's so young. Not Brian. He taught her to sew right away. She made a stuffed toy her first and second time in and is so please with it. Next, she's making a bag! She's so excited to go. I will be taking lessons myself soon. It's so reasonable. Brian was passive aggressive and short with the kids, and the young woman who "helped" my daughter seemed fed up and gave no guidance when they asked for help. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. What a great place! My 7 year old daughter and I both took the beginner sewing class. We split it across two Sunday mornings. We learned so much. The woman who worked with us was very friendly and they seem to have the lessons down to a science. Just enough support that you aren't left stranded, but enough time on your own that you actually learn a lot. I was able to take what I learned and immediately go home and actually use the sewing machine my mother had given us. Although far from experts my daughter and I have had a lot of fun making some simple projects and dreaming of what we'll do someday. read more

I had my 7 year old daughter's birthday party at Newton Sewing Studio over the weekend. The studio was adorable and the girls really enjoyed themselves. However, the owner, Brian was not particularly pleasant. In fact, he was a bit passive aggressive. There was a dog in the studio, which was not brought to my attention prior to the party. I feel this is quite negligent on the owner's behalf. As the person hosting the party, I should have been informed to let my guests know. Some children are afraid of dogs or have allergies to them. Even dogs that are "hypoallergenic" can still cause reactions for some people. Additionally, the dog was allowed to walk around on the table where food was being served. At one point, Chester, the dog got into some birthday cake. Brian yelled at the girls who were close by wanting to know "Why they didn't take the cake away from him?" I'm sorry, but it's not a 7 year olds responsibility to watch YOUR dog who really shouldn't be there in the first place! Brian was curt, to say the least. He is clearly not a lover of children. When the party was over, I was working diligently with the help of a few friends to clean up and carry all of the items down to my car. Brain was visibly annoyed and asked if I was going to be done soon because "He had an appointment and was already late." He did not offer to carry anything down to my car to help me speed the process along. Just as we were about to leave, my friend asked to use the bathroom. His response, after an exaggerated eye roll, "I just cleaned it but you can use it if you HAVE to" Needless to say, she opted to use the one downstairs. He did not thank us for hosting a party at his studio. As I was leaving I said "Thank You" to him and he said nothing in response. It is a great concept for a birthday party but the owner unprofessional. It's a shame because several of the other mothers and myself were considering having our girls take classes there this summer. Needless to say, we will be finding another studio. read more

Nice in theory but Brian and his "crew" are all very nasty and unhelpful towards kids. I dropped my daughter off and when I went to pick her up walked in on him speaking to my nine year old in a nasty condescending tone. Keep this place for adults who only need a machine. DO NOT advertise as a kid friendly place when you could care less whether they learn anything or have a good time. I hope this place shuts down for lack of business. While this may be a great place to learn to sew, it is not for any kids or families who have food allergies. Brian, the owner, feels obligated to single out kids who have food that is different from the other kids. When he was politely informed that it's not necessary to make an issue of food that is different since some kids may be sensitive to the issue, he simply responded "If I see something different, I'm going to point it out." If he wants to run a place that will host parties for young kids, then it is important that he understand some fundamentals of working with children, or hire someone who does. read more

I brought the boys I take care [5 and 7] of here a few times for summer camp and again for school break and the place is amazing. I was surprised that they had so many projects that appealed to little boys. The staff are so patient and seemed to have no trouble teaching a bustling room full of kids of different ages all at the same time. I thought I would have to sit with the little one and do everything for him but not only did I not have to, I wasn't allowed! They have a very independence-driven teaching style and it was amazing to see the little one take charge of his own project and do difficult tasks like threading a needle without complaining. I think this place is amazing for children, not just to learn to sew but to learn personal responsibility, how to handle minor frustration, how to fix a problem, and above all have fun and make something on their own. The stuffed toys they made are way cooler than all the macaroni art on the fridge ;) read more
