We attended a Sunday morning group workshop at the end of May 2023. We were complete novices. Our instructor Kate taught us what we needed to know to throw pots on the potter's wheel. At no time did we feel confused, lost, overwhelmed, rushed. I and my friend KHK both threw two good pieces suitable to fire. 9/10 would recommend. This is my favorite pottery/ceramics studio in Boston - and probably in the world. The studio itself is cute, warm/welcoming, and clean. I've taken two weekend workshops here and both teachers were kind and helpful. I enjoyed my time so much that I signed up for a weekly class. They take Covid precautions very seriously, each pottery wheel is surrounded by clear plastic walls so you are in your own space. Everyone wears masks and uses tools assigned to you that sanitized before and after each class. Great place to stave off the winter blues and learn new skills. So fun! A perfect place for a date night or special event. I booked two spots during a Sip and Spin workshop for my fiance's birthday. We laughed, we almost cried, and we had a great time getting in touch with our inner potter (or lack thereof). It was so easy to book our spots on the website. You find a workshop with available openings, choose your quantity of tickets needed, and pay. With the Sip and Spin Workshop, we were encouraged to bring our own drinks and snacks. When we arrived, we were introduced to Kat, given aprons, and told to have a seat near some wheels. She took about 20ish minutes to explain and introduce the basics of pottery to us before letting us work independently. It was pretty tough, but it was fun to make mistakes, and Kat was there to help us when we needed anything. We were allowed to try as many times as we liked to create something we could take home, but were only allowed two to take home. Time flew by so fast! I'd say my pottery pieces were definitely in the realm of the abstract, but they had bowl-ish qualities. We were told to return in two to three weeks to glaze and paint our pieces. Overall, it was a great experience and I'd totally recommend it to anyone who wants to be introduced to pottery. Bonus: They have a parking lot! read more

I've been to IF for a few years to take pottery classes, as well as their "Sip and Spin" workshop. I remember coming to my first class, not knowing how to throw and Ned was so knowledgeable and patient. Fast forward a few years and I'm still taking classes because I love immersing myself in pottery. I've also done a Sip and Spin with my partner (because you have to experience it ya know) and we had a lot of fun! Staff is always happy to help :) More details on how classes/Sip and Spins work: Classes - usually 8 weeks, throw for 6 weeks, trim and glaze for 2 weeks. You get 45 lbs of clay and can pay for additional clay. They offer white stoneware, speckled brown clay, brown clay, porcelain, and recycled clay. Firings and glazes included. The studio has tools available for students and you can come in to practice whenever the studio is open/has wheels available. Sip and Spins - 2 hrs long, usually on Friday or Saturday nights. You can bring your own alcohol/snacks to drink/munch on while throwing (though that'll be hard bc your hands will be dirty). Intro/tutorial is about 20-30 mins and then you're off! Definitely ask the instructor if you're stuck or need help and don't be afraid to use a new ball of clay. You can throw as many pieces as you want and you get to keep 2. After that they'll trim your pieces (so there are no rough edges) and all you have to do is come back to glaze and pick up. IF also offers: Sunday morning workshops (kid-friendly!), private lessons, and independent study. Highly recommend for any skill level, from newbies to experienced potters. I was a bit anxious going to my first "sip & spin" class because I've never done anything on a wheel and don't consider myself a creative/artistic type at all. Took my son to a glass fusing class with wonderful anticipation of what to expect. Unfortunately, we both left very disappointed. The owner had some friends in the class (a child my son's age, 8, and her mom), and spent the bulk of the class assisting them, at the detriment of others. My son and I had never done anything like this before, and needed help, which the owner just seemed either annoyed by or flat out ignored. She even gave the other people the glass I had asked her to cut for me. By the end of the class, I had to demand of the instructor to help my son and I so that we could leave with something. He had nothing to show when the class was nearly over. The owner seemed annoyed by this, and helped begrudgingly. We won't be back, unfortunately, unless we could be assured that we would be treated better the next time. read more

I took my kids (8 & 12 at the time) to Boston to visit family. We had some to kill and decided to check out Indigo Fire. The studio itself is bright, clean and welcoming. But most importantly, the staff and the owner herself were so generous with their time, teaching my children how to use the equipment and explaining the process of how make things from clay and glass. My kids were captivated and could have spent the whole day there (sadly, they only had a couple of hours). They left with two fine works of art ready to go in the kiln, which we picked up later. More importantly, they left with a sense of excitement and discovery. My only regret is that they are not in California so that they can continue to create and explore at this wonderful studio. read more

I came here for the first time with a group of friends. The owner of the shop is a bit rude but tolerable. You have to ignore the curt responses. Overall I enjoyed the pottery lessons because of the company I was with. The owner provides instruction. However some improvement in customer service doesn't hurt. Indigo Fire is brilliant. I came in without having touched pottery since about 1st grade, when I made a disappointing mass that somehow survives under the careful and exceedingly forgiving eye of my mother today. Here, they made it really easy to learn the fundamentals and make respectable creations on my first night. I was a little worried about some of the reviews about the customer service, but I'm very glad I took the chance. There's a new manager who's super nice, so it sounds like the customer service issues were resolved. The new manager has been at the studio for quite some time, but it sounds like he just took over a few weeks ago. Anyway, the service was outstanding! read more

What a terrible experience we had! My friend and I brought our daughters here for the first time to try the glass fusion. It would have been a very fun experience if, #1: The people working there took the time to kindly explain to our girls how to cut the glass properly, 2: were polite to us, 3: informed us honestly about how long it would take for their pieces to be finished. Against our better judgement, we came back. This time our daughters took a pottery throwing workshop. BIG MISTAKE. The owner's attitude started the moment that we walked in the door. "Didn't I tell you to cut her nails short??? She yelled? And so it started... She was nasty and condescending to the girls for the entire class. Today we went back to pick up one of the pieces of glass that should have been ready two weeks ago, (but wasn't). And to paint the pots, and, Surprise! Surprise! The bowls are nowhere to be found. The staff was unhelpful and couldn't explain how bowls made days after ours were ready to be painted and ours were nowhere. The owner was called, and had no explanation other than to be rude and nasty. How In world could this possibly be our fault??? read more

I called Indigo Fire when considering a location for a grown-up birthday party.. But after being told they don't allow BYOB, that we'd have to reserve a 30-minute designated kitchen period if we wanted to have cake, that our group could only choose one activity of the ones they offer (ceramic-painting, glass-fusing, clay-work) and would all have to do that activity and no others, and that it'd cost us $300, I opted out. But I did invite a couple friends to drop-in at Indigo Fire with me to do glass-fusing and check out the place, after confirming their Sunday drop-in hours. We arrive and are told that because they're having a glass-fusing class that day, the three of us can't do glass-fusing. Huh? One class blocks out the entire studio for the whole day? Their website mentions nothing about this, only that large parties should check their calendar to see if there's a party the day-of. There were only 3 of us! Very disappointing. So, with only two other options left, I consider painting ceramics. While I had been excited by the idea of their "handmade paintable clay pieces," the options were extremely limited, as were the glazes you could paint them with. Not exciting. I opt to clay-work and make my own piece from scratch, and the attendant says the piece can be painted while wet, then fired to become food-safe. She was really unhelpful, had a lot of attitude, and was reluctant to explain anything. She was, however, really vocal about telling us what we couldn't do, and reminding us of the time as closing time approached! Naturally, this takes a long time, and as we're getting close to closing time, I'm rushing to slap paint on my piece. I ask if I can return to finish my piece another day (ala The Brookline Clayroom) and she says no. Another staff-person, I guess her superior, overhears and says "yes you can," after which the attendant says, "Oh! I guess you can come back." So I wrap up my piece, and they set it aside. They tell my friends the pieces they've completed will be ready in two weeks, so I return then, to pick up their pieces, and to complete mine. Guess what? They fired my unfinished piece anyway, after telling me I could finish it later. $15 for a half-done, wonky spoon-rest. You would've thought they'd reimburse me since they made a mistake, but nope! I'll stick with The Brookline Clayroom, serves me right for going out on-a-limb! read more

I recently took a six-week adult pottery wheel throwing class here, and I just signed up for another six weeks. This studio is like a magic happy place. Never have I been so engrossed in creating something from start to finish, up to my elbows in wet clay, completely oblivious to email or text messages. The atmosphere is bright and cheerful; the staff laid is back, personable, and knowledgable; and the range of creative possibility here is tremendous. I come away feeling as though I have just gotten a mental massage, because pottery is so relaxing (and addicting). I especially love the drop-in component, where you can use a wheel whenever there are free hours. Can't say enough good things about Indigo Fire. The end. read more

I dropped in here while driving by. After seeing what was on offer, I decided to do a private lesson in wheel throwing (pottery), which was very reasonably priced. The private lessons generally have a three-session format: on the first day, you shape the clay from scratch, on the second you "trim" the pottery to give it better shape and at the third session, you paint the pottery. Unfortunately, this can't all be done in one day since the clay needs to dry. They did mention that they can do one-day private lessons for people who are throwing pottery but don't plan to trim or paint it. Anyhow, Ned, one of the co-owners gave me the lesson and he was very helpful. I did not have any prior experience, so he took me through the process from scratch. He was patient and very helpful with me and in my first lesson, I was already able to shape a decent looking bowl followed by a small vase. I highly recommend Indigo for learning to make pottery from clay. They also have glass fusing and pottery painting on pre-made pottery, which both looked fun! read more

My husband and I went to the Sip and Spin workshop and loved it. We are both complete beginners. The super-personable owner and her assistant gave an effective overview of basic throwing and shaping on the wheel. The studio itself is gorgeous, airy, and bright--a perfect place to forget your cares and focus on doing art. And you can't go wrong with a place that encourages you to drink beer while working with your hands. I'd go back in a minute. What a gem! This spacious clay and glass studio has provided several fun afternoons for both my 7 and 11 yr old kids. We even had my daughter's birthday party there and all of her friends enjoyed making their own clay creation. Staff is warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and understanding of a variety of ability levels. We enjoyed a lovely afternoon here during Art Week Boston. We made wall vases out of clay. The owner was so prompt and courteous .. not wanting to start our session til all arrived but wanting to be sure we had enough time to complete. she was thorough with her explanations, apologizing for not being able to give more detailed due to time constraints. I've been taking pottery wheel classes here since September 2016, and I can't recommend this studio more highly. I had zero pottery experience before taking classes at Indigo Fire, and thanks to the wonderful staff there, I have a new creative skill that I truly enjoy and can call my own. All of the instructors are skilled and kind, and the owners are very friendly and committed to the students (they also teach classes!). The studio itself is clean, organized, and bright, and has a creative, relaxing, and welcoming atmosphere. The classes are also well-priced and there are lots of weekly days/times to choose from. Importantly, the classes include a generous amount of clay per student for the 6 week class period as well as unlimited drop-in hours to practice and work on projects outside of class time. The classes are also quite small, which means that students get a lot of direct guidance from the instructor. I've also participated in one of the Sip and Spin workshops with a friend, which was a really fun way to spend a weekend evening! read more
