Awesome place for a fun crafternoon! I came with a few friends on a rainy day to do a project, and had never done anything with mosaics before. We bought about 3 hours of time which is really the minimum amount of time it will take for a project. They had all of the supplies and colors and textures you could ever want and helped us every step of the way! It was about $15/hour plus the cost of the actual item you are putting the mosaics on. And note, you will need to let the tiles dry for 24 hours and grout it at home (if you are not local and can't return) The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and it was a great experience. read more

Mosaic Oasis is a gem of a studio right on Mass Ave in Arlington. A bright, open studio with lots of mosaic artwork displayed. We tried the beginner class today and thoroughly enjoyed the process! There was just enough background and instruction before we began choosing our colors and cutting our tiles. It was so relaxing and we will certainly return for another session. TL; DR: fun, absorbing, easy Mosaic Taster class that left me wanting to sign up for more! Longer version: I signed up for the Mosaic Taster class after a sudden burst of artistic inspiration. I had no idea what I was getting into, but it turned out to be 3 hours of fascinating, utterly absorbing, relaxing fun that resulted in a lovely mosaic tile that I can't wait to show off. You genuinely don't need artistic talent because Suzanne (the owner, running the class) walks you through a brief history of mosaics and then helps you figure out how abstract or representative you want to make your piece...and then you realize how forgiving mosaics can be. If you're looking to try a new type of artistic expression, I highly recommend. If you're looking for a gift for someone who is "artsy," I highly recommend. And you can end up with a present for someone. (I didn't. I'm keeping mine. I love it that much lol.) read more

My wife and I signed up for the "Taster class". We've always been curious of how mosaic was done and this seemed like a good thing we could do together. We loved it. Instruction was clear and I enjoyed the historical overview. The interaction between other members of the class added to the experience and we really enjoyed ourselves. You'll have a couple hours to make your own piece and you will use just about every minute of that time making your piece. We're thinking about signing up for more as our schedule allows. Really enjoyed the mosaic taster class! The instructor was very friendly and helpful, I honestly regret that I did not have more questions for since she was willing to do anything to help us perfect our pieces. My friends and I were caught in traffic and the instructor waited for us to start. They have tiles in all different colors and your design can be whatever you'd like! You also get to cut the tiles yourself so you really get the full experience here! There were only 5 of us in the class which was so nice! I finished a little late since arts and crafts are not my strong suit and the instructor was more than happy to stay a little late until I finished. I will definitely go back! Be on the lookout for deals on Groupon :) Note they do redeem your coupon before you go so don't be surprised like I was if you go to print and it says it's been used! Love this place! Me and my boyfriend wanted to try something fun. So we tried a mosaic tester class. Suzanne the owner is so kind. We had so much fun! We each made a mosaic and loved it. The class had about 6ppl in it so it wasn't crowded or anything so it made it more personable. If your thinking about trying a fun art class try this you won't be disappointed. Mosaic Oasis Studio & Supply - Tiles - Art Supplies Near Me - Arlington, Massachusetts

I'm sure if you haven't mosaicked before and/or take one of their more expensive offerings, of which there are many, you'll get A-1 service. But the people who run this place: (a) have dollar signs in their eyes, and are partially-blinded by them, (b) don't run the place very efficiently i.e., don't stock supplies very well, make mistakes when they run credit cards, have "volunteers" who they won't allow to check voicemail, (c) don't seem to be able to give attention to more than one customer at a time (or in maybe a 10-15 minute time frame), especially if one is their friend and/or paying more than you are if you're just doing their studio time, and (d) also don't seem to understand that they're providing a service, and if you ask them a question or if they could grab you a tool or something - even if you say "when you get a chance" at the end - they'll be offended and think you're an obnoxious customer if they're chatting with their friends and/or someone who's spending a fair amount of money. I went there for studio time ("Beginners and Beyond") 3 times. the first time was fine, but I was in a rush. Tellingly, one of the owners, Betsy, told a story about a customer who wanted to keep her piece the way she wanted it even though Betsy thought it was ugly, and how eventually she just figured she'd let the woman do what she wanted, because "[she]'d rather be rich than right." Not something I'd say in front of a customer, especially a first-time one, but whatever. Then when I came in the second time, last Sunday, after Betsy said they'd be open then, I wasn't super-happy because I'd looked on their website to look at their Sunday hours, and their website said that they were closed on Sun. So I gave a call and left a vm asking them about this and left my number to call me back. Some hours passed by and I didn't get a call back. I did some errands and tried calling again. This time their apparent saint of a volunteer picked up. I asked about the hours and said I'd left a voicemail earlier but hadn't been called back. Evidently this upset her very much because she is a volunteer and doing the owners a blessed service by being in there and answering the phone, and they trust her with the keys to the place, the register, etc., etc., but they won't give her their voicemail password. When I eventually had it out with Betsy the 3rd and final time I went in, she didn't really explain why this was, and also accused me of being rude and interrupting and demanding, etc., saying that I "came in talking." I told her I'd just said hi and started setting up. SHE was rude and what she was saying didn't make a whole lot of sense to me from the perspective of running a business. If it was just them and their friends letting the public use their services as some kind of heroic charitable work, which they seem to think it is, well, then, I guess that makes it a different ballgame. So if you choose to spend your time and money at Mosaic Oasis, don't go in thinking that the customer is always correct as the saying goes. Or know that when you ask them if you could use a tool, or 1 Q-tip, this is apparently very taxing on them, even if you go get it yourself. They have higher-paying customers and buddies to chat with. Anyway, I won't be going back there. It's only another 20 minute drive to a much better studio and teacher in Rockport (Pam Stratton! google her), and I'll just go back there from now on. My boyfriend and I found a LivingSocial (or Groupon) deal and decided to learn a new art with their 2-hour mosaic class. The place was easy to find and there was 2-hour parking right out front. The owners were friendly and informative. The class was 7 people with ages between I'd say 12 and 50, which gave both instructors plenty of opportunity for helping us and suggesting techniques, colors and tile styles to help us design a 5x5 mosaic to bring home. Plus, everyone's mosaics were so different, and we got ot see and share them all with everyone :) I loved learning about mosaics as an art and I was surprised as how much I didn't know. It was really fun to learn from the two owners (I don't remember their names unfortunately) and to try my hand at something new. Our mosaics came out pretty great for first-timers, there were PLENTY of tiles to choose from and we had free range when it came to choosing a design for ourselves. We went in knowing what we wanted to try and create, but the studio also has some templates you can trace to get a basic shape if you're more comfortable with that. They were also great with explaining the shapes and colors that would make your piece POP and stand out, they even helped everyone choose which color grout to use on their piece. Speaking of the grouting portion of making a mosaic: after your class, you have to let your mosaic sit for about 24 hours before putting the grout on, so you're sent home with a little goodie bag with the grouting supplies you'll need to grout your mosaic at home (you'll just need a tossable plastic container). The owners also said they have a deal where for $120 you get 10 hours of studio time and you can use their supplies to make whatever project you want (you supply the object you want to mosaic on, they supply the tiles, glue, cutters and studio), which I thought was a great deal if somebody was interested in learning more about how to mosaic after taking this class but didn't want to buy their own supplies. Overall, I would highly suggest this to anybody just looking to try something new on a Saturday morning and to spend time with somebody doing something different. This is a gem to find! Two women own the store/studio and provide a variety of supplies and events/classes. I booked a Saturday morning class and found a very small class size with an instructor so passionate about mosaicing it was inspiring. After a history of mosaics, learning about a variety of tiles, and discussing the art on the walls, we began our own small pieces. Now it was harder than I could have imagined because you're timid since you're cutting tile but once you get over the fear it becomes a creative experience. By the end of 3 hours I was comfortable with the methods and had a beautiful piece. They send you home with a bag of stuff to finish off the grouting of your piece. This was one of my favorite experiences trying something new because of the person attention. Highly recommend and I can't wait to go back for a Friday night class!! read more

A wonderful place to learn how to create mosaics. I took an intro class and then paid for studio time to create a backsplash for my kitchen. Suzanne and Betsy were so helpful with planning, designing and giving tips on installing my mosaic. They also have tools, a wide variety of tiles and other material and lots of enthusiasm. This place is great! I came in with a livingsocial coupon for the mosaic taster class. It was a lot of fun, and the instructor was really informative. She gave us a brief overview of the history of mosaics, from the ancient Greeks to modern Barcelona and Gaudí. One thing to note about the taster class class is that the mosaics you make are indoor only. But afterwards, you can take more classes or do drop in hours to make something that can be outdoors. Everyone was really personable, a few people came in to work on their bigger projects while we were there, and they were very sweet. Each person gets a small mosaic--about the size of a coaster--to take home, along with some grout to complete your piece after the glue has set. Anything but an oasis! For a business that's all about helping people and providing a welcoming and creative workspace, what I experienced was entirely the opposite. The owner was rude, cold and outright nasty. I went in to buy supplies and was treated like I was in her way even though there was no one else in the store. It was clear she was more interested in working on her own project than helping me. She implied that I was being cheap in my selections and then actually said she was doing me a favor by making her supplies available for purchase. I'm new to the craft and was shocked and offended. My advice, stay clear of this business that has a very bad vibe. read more
