I came here today for a sewing class with Eva and it was absolutely amazing! I'm so glad I signed up for the class because Eva taught me so much about my machine. I got my sewing machine for Christmas and tried watching many youtube videos and couldn't get the hang of it. This class taught me on how to use my machine, the different types of needles, and fabrics we can use. I didn't know any of this stuff before taking this class, and didn't think it would be such an in-depth class but glad it was because it was super informative and now I feel super comfortable with my machine now. I will be signing up for more classes in the future with Eva! She was an amazing instructor! read more

My sister was visiting from out of town and we went to the store to buy specific yarn. The door of the store was locked and a woman came to the door and told us that it was closed. Looking through the window we could see a group of people, I assume they were in a class or just finishing. So we left, I pulled up my phone to see what the store hours are, the store was opening at noon, in 5 minutes. Instead of telling us the store would open in 5 minutes or better yet just letting us in to browse we were told it was closed. So, not only did they lose a sale but poor customer service and I won't go back. read more

I just moved in down the street, so I signed up for a class as a way to meet locals. Plus, I've wanted to learn to knit for some time. I can't say I'm in love with knitting yet (I am the opposite of crafty), but the class was small and friendly. With just five of us, we got personalized attention from the instructor. The store's owner, Anissa, is friendly and makes sure to learn your name. They encourage students and any knitters to come in during the week to hang out and knit and ask questions. There are a variety of classes in knitting and sewing. And the selection of yarn seem pretty good, even to a beginner like me. I'm determined to finish my first project just so I have a reason to go back and buy more of the gorgeous yarn they carry. read more

This is my favorite LYS! Except that it isn't local. The Stitch House is conveniently located near the red line, but it is a pity that it isn't near me in Brighton. One of the features about the Stitch House, that I loved, was that they had a wide range of products, but without that claustrophobic and disorganized feel of most yarn stores. They also had a number of sewing machines set up for use, which is not something that I have seen in a LYS. We came to the Stitch House for Crafters Anonymous, and I went away with some beautiful blue/grey yarn and an awesome SH bag. This is going to be my new favorite stop, when I have the time. What's the etiquette on updating your year-old review with the same number of stars as last time? In the year that I've been frequenting the Stitch House since my first review, I've come to know and love it a lot more. The store represents everything a great LYS (I know what that means now!) should be, and more. Anissa (the owner) is a bundle of energy, constantly encouraging new-knitters and old hands alike to share their crafting endeavours with the little community she's created. Claire has sat through HOURS of my mindless conversation, sharing in the delight of each new knitting milestone I achieve, and letting me use the yarn-winder-upper just for fun. And Katie, the Knitting Maestro, has patiently witnessed my mistakes, gently correcting me, and always with a clever anecdote to entertain and educate me. [there are other employees at the Stitch House, but these three have been my teachers!] I am *always* welcome here. This is not an exaggeration. I've been let in, ten minutes early, because I was standing outside in the cold. I've been plied with wine after a really hard day at work. I've been dutifully assisted, even when there was only one employee in the store, who was busy running a workshop for 10 other people. I've been offered a seat at an overflowing table, amidst the chaos of reordering yarn/fabrics mid-season. My favourite thing about this space (other than the fact that it has turned my clumsy, awkward and uncoordinated fingers into a solid and obsessive knitter) is the owner's commitment to making the store what her customers want it to be, prioritizing their needs over her own. Anissa will order stuff in for her customers, however bizarre or mundane, just because they want it, not because she has shelf space or because she'll make a profit. Anissa will rearrange the store layout to allow parents and pet-owners to bring their dependents and dogs comfortably. Even, bless her, Anissa held a small memorial when one of the Stitch House community passed away very suddenly. I encourage you all, be you old or young, male or female, avid crafter or wide-eyed beginner, wherever you are in Dorchester, to come to the Stitch House. You won't realize that you've needed them all this time until you arrive. read more

I absolutely love the Stitch House. Now note, I'm not here to rate their product or prices. Well truth beknown I'm knew to this knitting thing, and well only 3 thingy's of yarn into my first scarf that I started back in December. If I plan right it will be ready for the fall. :) So I have a ways to go before I can rate things I'm just learning about. Which leads me to learning........if you are looking to learn to knit, crochet or sew I highly recommend coming here. First and foremost the staff at Stitch House are amazing! They are so friendly and helpful and knowledgable, you'll forget for a second you are sitting in a store in Boston - a city know for it's evasiveness. All the ladies working here are fantabulous, and I could never say enough nice things about them. What is also awesome is that they offer all kinds of classes - at affordable prices to learn a skill you fancy. What's better is that once you join a class you can go back anytime to work with the staff if you are stuck, use the sewing machines & carry on with a project to completion. Oh and this is for free! After taking a few knitting classes and learning how to sew at the Stitch House, it is time to write a review. I am a fan. I love looking at the yarn. I can look, touch, admire and lust after the yarn and if I have a question, they are always willing to help. They took me, a totally uncrafty, sewing allergic gal and changed me to a I really really want a sewing machine gal. I now like to sew (almost as much as knitting but not quite). They were patient with me and helped me through sewing frustration and helped me not give up. I came back and made the skirt I was having problems with. I highly recommend it. read more

The lady was absolutely unpleasant and sneered at me at least a couple of times. Christmas eve and I was going to make ham from scratch. I needed a knitting thread to tie the ham, I know this is a specialty store and I do not mind a specialty price especially that I couldn't find any suitable thread in other stores, and this was in the neighborhood. I was the only person in the store and the lady was initially slightly accommodating, until I mentioned what I am using the thread for. Probably against her principles to have their lovely threads be used to tie ham, but if that were the case, I wish she just let me know directly, not be passive aggressive. Wow! Dorchester finally has a knitting, crochet & sewing shop to call its own. While some people might have been annoyed with the advertising by way of Post-it on the front door, I was really psyched. The grand opening was today, and while there are still some things in the works, the shop is up and running. The space is open with pale floors, loads of natural sunlight in the front, and dark cases carrying most of my favorite yarns (Sheep Shop, Blue Sky, Colinette). Although by no means exhaustive, there's a lot to see (and feel); prices are about what you'd pay anywhere else. I was very very impressed to see an area with a bunch of needles and open skeins for a quick demo, either of the yarn or the needles. Way to go! In the back is the sewing area set up with 6 or so sewing machines. While they don't sell cloth, they will offer quilting and other sewing classes (and knitting/crochet) in the future. It's still a work-in-progress: the yarn winder hadn't arrived, and they will carry other needles and probably other yarns as well. The schedule's not up and there's a few non-functioning areas on the 'site. Give them a little time to grow. ****Update 4/02/08: Annissa, the owner, is awesome. She happily stayed open for us for our crafting meet up, offered the space & her help, and sweetened everything with a discount. *Sniff sniff*, I wish this was really an LYS for me - alas, Dot is a bit outta the way for this knitter. Loves the owner, loves the staff, loves the space. Current budget (and yarn hemorrhage) doesn't allow for new purchases right now, but a sewing class? Might be my ticket in the door. The space at SHD is amazing - yarn in the front, sewing in the back. The light is fantastic and the range of yarns (price, quality, brand, etc.) is not to be scoffed at. Finally...I found a knitting home! I've been having a tough time finding a LYS that I feel super comfortable in and that has the type of patterns and yarns that suite me. Stitch House to the rescue! This store is a beautiful space in a nice convenient location. They offer knitting, crochet and sewing classes. I'm excited to try my hand at sewing in the next few weeks and I get to use some beautiful fabrics that they are offering. Anissa, the owner, is just wonderful. She was patient with our group by answering questions, offering yarn/pattern suggestions and just offering great customer service in a very comfortable way. I can't say how great this store is. I've been going to the Stitch House for a few weeks now. Within this time, the teachers have been very patient, friendly and most of all enthusiastic about crafts. Within the first two lessons, they took me from a novice with no practical understanding of crochet to being able to complete my first project with only three stitches. Who knew there was such a great little boutique on Dot Ave?? I just found out about this place when I searched for some Spud & Chloe yarn on Ravelry. You can buy it here at this LYS. I dragged the fella with me and wrote a list of yarns to look for. We found a parking spot right out front. The storefront is very inviting, with flower boxes and big windows on both sides of the door. I was surprised at how large the space is! The high ceilings make it seem even bigger. Lots of books, knit samples, and notions fill the front of the store, and large cases filled with yarn are more towards the back. There are sewing machines across the back right-side wall (for rental, I'm assuming) and a large section of well-organized needles. I found what I needed in just minutes. I was greeted and helped by a very nice young woman (I'm ashamed I didn't get her name) and I put my boyfriend out of his misery and left pretty soon. I did want to stay and poke around at all the different areas. Next time, he'll just have to stay home. My Spud & Chloe sock yarn was $11 each skein (250 yds each) and my needles were $8 for the dpns and $10 for the circulars (Clover bamboo). read more

Since Spark Craft closed a little over a year ago, I'd been itching to find a really good LYS. I'm not a big fan of the store in Harvard Square and I have never been to Mind's Eye, but I'd been getting the news letters for Stitch House since they opened and had been eager to drop in. I decided to go today, the day of the Red Line Yarn Crawl, to scope out the store and see if I could get some good deals. This store was packed with people and wall to wall yarn. It was incredible. I haven't seen this much yarn in one place in a long time. Instead of just carrying one type of cascade or malabrigo, they carry all weights. It's fantastic. The store was also stocked with plenty of notions, fabric, patterns, books, and needle holders. It's a great little space and the employees are helpful and friendly. I'm also looking forward to taking one of their many classes. They offer a class on cables for $30 which is way more affordable than most other knitting and craft classes out there. Thank you Anissa for letting us hold our Crafters Anonymous meeting here one night, staying open late, and for allowing us to bring in outside food and drink. We were pressed for a place to go and I had finally run out of ideas - Stitch House was the place to go (Thanks Tracey!). Stitch House has a great open layout, amazing selection of yarn, crafting books, sewing machines, and a couple of fabric selections. It is simply a crafters paradise. Anissa, the owner, is not only patient and helpful but very understanding. She offers a wide array of classes that are good for adults and teens. Although I came to Stitch House expecting bolts of fabric, there are only a few bolts and mostly geared towards the sewing classes. Restrooms: Clean! and spacious! read more

Lovely atmosphere. Arrived in the middle of a class, looking for yarn for my latest project. Better selection than many of the small independent fiber stores I've been to in the Boston area, but still only one line of yarn in stock with enough colors in just the shades I'm looking for. I really, really appreciate them marking yarn bins by weight icons; when you have to work across labels to get what you need for a project or are looking for substitutions, this is incredibly helpful. Don't know why more places don't do this! There's always a trade-off, though, right? All quality stuff, but not cheap. Friendly staff, but not a ton of selection (although it's still much better than what I've been able to find locally, lately. Rents in Boston are no doubt cutting into the square footage independent yarn stores can support). They have a Friday night social make on-site, and the lady who rang me up (extra points for meeting a fellow geek) let me know about a monthly community fiber-make event in Somerville. I will definitely be back for classes and the inspirational browse/buy, but sadly, since the demise of Windsor Button, think any specific large projects will have to be stocked online. I would give this place 4 stars if I hadn't had a not so great conversation with the owner the first time I was there. It's true, I don't knit...I crochet. As the owner of a yarn shop, you probably shouldn't reply "well why wouldn't you knit instead" when I tell you that. Especially after you've told me that you crocheted for a long time before you knit. Crochet uses more yarn - if anything you should be encouraging it! It put a bit of a sour taste in my mouth to get that reaction. That being said, the other women who work here have always been friendly and helpful when I've been in. The selection is good and the prices are comparable to other stores in the area. read more

Great little spot packed with tons of yarn/fabric selections, lots of friendly faces and a whole bunch of knowledgeable staff who obviously love what they do. I went for the quilting fabrics and quilt club (which has online scheduling - score!). I was delighted with the number of fabrics available, but I continue to be thoroughly impressed by the one on one instruction, constant positive feedback and full-on quilting/sewing work room with ALL the things I never knew I needed to make a quilt. I would recommend the Stitch House to anyone looking to pick up a new craft, attempt a new project or shmooze with fellow lovers of hand made things. I found Stitch House when they offered a deal on Living Social for their Intro to Knitting Class. Kathleen was such a great instructor. With her guidance, I have been able to complete a beautiful cowl for the winter and some washcloths. I have a hat and scarf that I am working on and yarn for several more projects. I also took the Getting to Know your Sewing Machine class and Cassidy is also a great teacher. I look forward to taking more classes at Stitch House. read more

I trekked out through the snow and slush yesterday to finally visit this place. I liked that it was so close to the JFK/UMASS stop on the red line and has such big signage.. no extra searching around required! The lady inside was very friendly and helpful to me, but didn't pester me or try to pressure me. Other reviewers aren't kidding about the selection here- tons of yarn to look at, pick up, feel. The prices are average, but the organization and selection is really nice. I got some information about classes along with a couple of skeins and a new crochet needle. Hopefully come February I'll get a chance to try one of their classes! read more

A lovely store that is a short walk from the JFK Umass T stop. I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon after finding the store via google'ing. The store is bright, welcoming and the woman there was extremely friendly. They have a large selection of different kinds of yarn, as well as gorgeous prints. I'm intrigued by their classes as I'd like to move on from scarves and cowls. I bought the yarn I had come for and picked through their large amount of sale yarns for a few more. Although Windsor is sometimes easier for me to get to, I will definitely be trying to make a trip here once or twice a month minimum! * Also, I got a personalized card in the mail a few days later. There's not much to say that hasn't already been reported in the other reviews. Except no one has mentioned the bathroom, which is really really pretty! I know, who cares about a bathroom, but it goes to show that the owner and staff value attention to detail and have truly made the store a beautiful and pleasant place to be. There's a great selection of yarns, books, etc. but that sort of thing you can get anywhere. What really counts, and makes a crafty girl want to come back for all her purchases, is the atmosphere; Stitch House has it down! The Stitch House is pretty awesome. My sisters and I took Knitting 101 a few months ago. Heather taught the class. In the 4 week course (once a week), you learn to do so much. Heather is extremely patient and will help you in being successful in knitting. She makes it look so easy and once you get the hang of it, you too can knit! In the first class, you learn how to cast on and knit a few stitches. Heather shows you a few varieties and you can choose which one is easier for you. The next class, you are asked to bring in a project you would like to complete. I brought in a few that I liked from ravelery.com ( they offer free patterns) and heather chose one that I would be able to complete at the beginners level without being too easy that you don't learn any new stitches. I decided to make a knit hat and had experience using 5 needles at once to make stripes. Its been a while since i picked up the needles, so my hat isn't complete yet. if you already have experience knitting, you can stop into Stitch to knit, ask questions, or learn new techniques. Everyone there is super nice. They also offer many other classes like sewing, crotchet, any you want to learn how to make, Stitch House can probably teach you or steer you toward the right direction. they have a good selection of yarns and needles as well as fabrics and buttons! read more

So I've been knitting, on and offskis, for a year and decided it was time to get serious. No more finishing a scarf halfway and leaving remnants for the cat. No more knitting an almost-there scarf for the boyfriend that, while soft and warm, still has knots all over it from changing the yarn colors. No more scarves, period. It was time to tackle a new project. Something difficult. Something that involved purling and those circular needles. Something with a pattern. Perhaps a hat? Stitch House had the answer. Claire answered all my questions, pointed me to the right supplies and even gave me a few moments to drool over their incredible yarn selection. The 'project table' in the middle of the room pointed out that this was a friendly place, too: it seemed to stay "sit down, hon, and stay a while." While it's out of my way, Stitch House is worth the trip to Dot. I'll definitely be back for workshops and classes. read more

I love that they are open late (until 8 PM) some nights. It gives me plenty of time to trek over to Dorchester after work. My first time there I arrived around 7ish and they were having a pizza party for one of the knitting groups. Everyone was really friendly and seemed like they were having a good time. The owner even offered me a slice of pizza! Seemed like a really great place and I really enjoyed the selection of yarn. I am looking forward to taking a sewing class there sometime in the future. I went to the Stitch House for the first time with a bunch of Yelpers for a meetup, and it was a great experience. Annissa, the owner is such a sweetheart. She stayed open late for us, helped with all of our questions, and said if we had any questions on our projects, to give her a call or stop by. My friend signed up for a sewing class but wasn't sure if she could make it, and Annissa said she could make it up with her at another time. She even let me borrow a pattern to take home and set aside some of the yarn I was using in case I needed extra later! I will definitely be going back to the Stitch House and highly recommend it! read more

I CAN KNIT AND PURL, change yarn, bind off, cast on, the whole kit and caboodle (almost)! I started knitting while I was still in college and managed to self-teach myself one method of casting one, knitting, and that's about it. That was the extent of my knowledge for about five years. Enter the Stich House. For $75 and four weeks (tomorrow is the fourth week but I'm eager) I have learned how to correctly knit and do all of those fun things I named above. I can do the basics and probably even knit a mean scarf (for you?) if I keep up the discipline and not unravel my work every 25 rows or so. The staff (Claire especially) is so kind and patient even after the same questions over...and over...and over. And having to show you how to do something basic, like purling, over...and over...and over. If you are looking for a particular kind of yarn, whoever is at the store will do their best to find it for you even if requires tearing the store apart to find it. If you need information on different knitting or sewing tools this is the place to ask. It's low pressure in terms of sales and there are tons of options about what to buy. Everything oozes quality and makes you want to be better. Not only have I learned how to really knit at the Stitch House, but I have become completely motivated to stay with it which is what I needed. And on top of that, the space inspired me to paint my room. Parts of the space are painted fuchsia which is what I painted my room since it looked so awesome. Creativity thrives here. read more

Came in on a Saturday night, walked around the store for 10-15 minutes without so much as a glance from the staff. There was a knitting group happening which was taking up all the space right in the middle of the store, so clearly everyone in there was preoccupied. I like the idea of having a community crafty gathering place but don't ignore new customers. Will not be returning - I'll stick to Gather Here in Cambridge who have a much bigger selection and much more welcoming staff. read more

I love this shop. The entire staff is patient and helpful and knowledgable. It's a warm cozy feeling to it, and beautiful products. I had stopped in when I was stuck on a project while crotcheting, for a minimal cost they helped me out and was knowledgable and patient while I struggled on points. I have now signed up for a knitting class and I love it and the staff. I read another review where someone mentioned that you can tell that the staff loves their jobs and wants you to love the projects that you are working on...I agree 100%. I love that this shop is down the street from where I live. I have a feeling I'll be back for more classes! read more

I took a sewing class here and LOVED IT!! I always wanted to learn how to sew, but never quite had the guts. The class and store are very welcoming and unintimidating. I liked it there so much that I signed up for knitting classes too! It's just such a positive vibe in there - all these folks being so creative and supportive. The owner and staff are just wonderful!
