Yes - it's my weekly BBQ crush. I arrived by 5 so they still had a good selection. I ordered a half-rack of ribs (half of the last one - I didn't want to be too greedy), a pound of brisket, a dozen wings (first time they've had these still available), a cheeseburger (no bun), a pulled pork sandwich, and, of course, baked beans and potato salad (first time trying this). Instead of hauling the treasure back to my boat, my hunger decided I was going to eat the pulled pork sammie there in the parking lot. The rain started pouring as I was walking to the car. I pulled to the side of the building and Voilá! THE best pulled pork Sandwich of my life!!! The smoky fragrance of the meat, the mix of lean and fat meat and their incredible BBQ sauce on top. A local market you wouldn't know about unless someone told you it was there or you're a local. I don't even like barbecue and it was great!

Few things in life will provoke a Texan as quickly as suggesting that there is some where on earth other than God's chosen homeland of open range and longhorns where brisket is prepared correctly. I lived in Houston for 12 years, and can testify , that if you were to identify the one true religion that binds them all, rich and poor, liberal and conservative , it is the near sacred act of BBQ. Other than the malformed vegan or vegetarian, you would be hard pressed to identify a resident who doesn't have a smoker in the back yard , or a favorite bbq shack where they go for a regular feed. I mention all of this in great detail , only to support my personal testimony to you here today , Gary Lees Market is hands down , the most fabulous bbq I've ever eaten. There I said it. Without apology or regret. Their brisket is sublime, smoked for 14 hours, the meat presents with such an extraordinary depth of flavor, that it defies belief. Tender , juicy, each bite is a celebration, and witness to what 50 years of cooking bbq will produce. Likewise, the ribs , were also spectacular. Maybe most amazing, were the incredible thick slicked strips of bacon , with edges tasting like crunchy caramel perhaps, maybe where the meat had grazed a pecan pie on its way to the smoker, and interior, soft , meaty and like all their food just swimming in flavor - not sauce! My wife and I ordered way too much food , deliberately, including sides of baked beans, collard greens and cole slaw. Like the fabulous smoked meats, all of this was just perfect. The food is served cafeteria style, with a constant line of 30 people of every caste and color , joining together in celebration of a cuisine older than time itself, and bathed in smells so delicious, that you worry they will run out before they take your order. Luckily, everyone is tended to with the gentility and kindness that you only find in the south , and soon, you will happily walking out with your bags of bbq, or if like my wife and I , are overcome with ravenous desire, you can sit at one of the simple tables and enjoy your food right there. The place looks like it hasn't changed much in 50 years, and that's probably the very best part of this experience, a commitment to excellence , an honoring of tradition, food as high art. read more

I stepped in and immediately fell in love with this place. During a 10-15 minute wait in line, I got some good intel from the nice gentleman behind me who's a regular. The TL;DR: it's all good. We got a brisket sandwich, a few ribs, a pork chop, a sausage link, and shared it all. Holy moly. I'm a brisket girl and it was insanely good - on par with anything I ate at the best places in Texas. The pork chop was ace, and the sausage rapidly disappeared. Ribs had great flavor but in my opinion they could've gone a bit longer. Sides were good but as we ordered too much meat they were a bit unnecessary. We will definitely be back when we are passing through. I think I died and went to heaven! We are driving home from the beach and looked up local favorites. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When we saw the building I was a little worried but the parking lot was packed so we decided to try it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I got a 1/4 lb of chopped brisket and chopped pork. They are both so flavorful, still moist, and just the right consistency. My husband got the beef ribs, sausage, and collards. The collards have a sweet flavor without the bitterness that is often present. They also have little bits of meat so beware vegetarians. The jalapeño and onion sausage is all homemade with a great balance of texture and the perfect amount of bite. The ribs are tender, flavorful, and juicy. He ate the first few without any sauce. It's worth missing the turn onto interstate 95, it's a short detour and you can easily backtrack. Sorry, but the pictures don't represent the quantity of food. I'm coming back!! I don't know when, but if and when I'm back in that part of Georgia, I'm going back to Gary Lee's for some amazing BBQ. I was brought here by some co-workers. I always have to try the brisket when I go to a bbq place, so that's what I did. I also got a couple of smoked chicken wings and a couple of spare ribs and some collard greens. I couldn't wait to try it. First, the brisket. The bark was amazing. It was thick, dark and tasty! The smoke ring was perfect and there wasn't too much smoke in the meat. The meat itself was moist, had the perfect bend and melted in my mouth. It did NOT need any sauce. Having said that, I tasted their bbq sauce and all it did was add some amazing sweet and slightly spicy flavor to the amazing meat. The chicken wings were fall off the bone tender, not too fall off the bone though, and just about the most tasty smoked wings I've ever tasted. I don't know what they use for seasoning, but it was amazing. I wished I had ordered more than just 2. Add a little of that bbq sauce and I could have died and gone to heaven. One disclaimer I have to make right off the bat, I'm not a huge fan of spare ribs, but that's what they had, so that's what I got. The spare rib was really good. They were very meaty, but the meat didn't fall right off the bone, it took a very slight pull and then it would come apart. It was cooked the perfect amount and had the same perfect flavor. Again, the sauce kicked it up so many notches that it almost changed my opinion about spare ribs (almost). I wasn't so impressed with the collard greens. They had good flavor, but they were a little too crispy or undercooked for me. All in all an amazing BBQ experience. I wish I had found this place at the beginning of my stay in Brunswick, but it really wouldn't have made any difference since they're only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. read more

Gary Lee's Barbecue. I lowkey make an excuse to eat at Gary Lee's once a week--oftentimes two or three times a week. What I heard, is that Gary Lee is set to retire soon, so they are only open Thursday-Saturday. I go in Thursdays at 11 am, when they open. Any given day, there will be Sheriff and police cars aligned, pick-up trucks, and a full parking lot. Inside--elders, police, hippies, a writer is in town, and someone always holds the door open for the next person to come inside and join the line. The tables are solid wood, and the chairs are too. The tables are covered with cloth, and paper towels sit atop the 4 or 6 or 8-person table. The walls are Robin's Egg Blue, and there are antiques that somehow do not lend to a kitsch vibe. Authentic, that's Gary Lee's barbecue--where people meet and sit side-by-side. Gary Lee himself wears a cap and keeps his head down in focus, except to glance at every single person entering his barbecue haven. His son, Cory, is almost as serious, but still asks you what you ordered out of his own curiosity. The ladies behind the counter always smile, and just might give you a free Dr. Pepper before they wish you a nice weekend. The burger is exceedingly singular. The ground beef is not too tightly packed, stacked inches high, and smoked all the way through in a surprising gift of flavor. It is topped (centered?) with traditional Southern Hoop cheese, which they have for sale by the pound. The ribs are jaw-droppingly juicy while being un-sauced. They are not fall-off-the-bone, but instead, have a tender bite that is more satisfying. The pulled pork sandwich, I've been told, is the "easiest" thing to pull off at a bbq joint. Gary Lee's pulled pork sandwich makes this theory proof through its flawless-ness. The pork chop is an unexpected wild card, and the best pork chop I've ever had. The sides include collards, Brunswick Stew, etc. and the desserts include Blueberry, and Chocolate, Delight. Every aspect is considered at Gary Lee's, and as long as I'm in Brunswick, I will lowkey go where people meet to eat. read more

Food = 5 No masks? -2 Gary Lee's, hmmm. As others have said, BBQ isn't worth risking COVID. I was so disappointed to see EVERY single patron, and most of the staff not wearing any masks. AND, I was like shame stared at for wearing mine. Everyone was eating inside; dining room was packed. Elbows all over every table, shoveling food into naked sweaty mouths, a foot away from more naked sweaty mouths, greasy hands touching common condiments & napkin holders, etc. And yes, I put my dignity and principles aside to give these people my money and try the BBQ. Yes, it was good. Yes, it was very good. Yes, I was scared for a full 14 days afterward that I had contracted a virus just to try BBQ, and added guilt that I may have infected my son in the process. Realistically, I didn't think chances were highly likely that I'd catch it from food service, but it's the lack of practice of hygiene and respect for public health that repulsed me. Eating in my car away from the spreaders... Ribs were falling off the bone, smokey, rubbed with spices-a-la-country-meth, and just very good. Brisket was better than it looks in my photos. It was actually smoked and barbequed, unlike the sorry excuses for BBQ elsewhere in the area, who had water bath brisket turning grey. Pulled pork was also full of flavor with no gross parts accidentally chopped into the mixture. Mac N Cheese was super high quality and extremely tasty. The blueberry cobbler was very good too. I'm not a huge blueberry fan, but it passed my son's approval so I was happy. Their BBQ sauce is ketchup based, and was just amazing. I wanted to buy some to take home, but they didn't have any bottled. They'll sell you some in a takeout container, but I wanted some sealed stuff to preserve on a car trip to Philly. So poor hygiene and/or COVID denying aside, the food was very flavorful. It was NOT as good as Love Shack on Jekyll, nor Sistas Kitchen in downtown Brunswick, both of whom manage to abide health and safety guidelines by wearing masks, and maintaining social distance. But if you're in the mood to risk your health, stop on by! read more

WOW! This is a MUST when visiting. We are newer to the area and a friend suggested this place and wow are we glad we tried it! The rub they use and their special bbq sauce is a perfect combo and out of this world! We tried their ribs, wings, brisket, sausage and beans. The sausage DELICIOUS.. we even brought extra home and made in an omelet the next morning. HIGHLY recommend that. I've heard the burger and pork chops are good too, but haven't tried yet. A good day is when I'm driving south and Gary Lee's is open so I can fill my back seat with styrofoam containers with bbq'd MEAT (after eating inside of course). A bad day is when all this styrofoam containers are empty and I'm left licking the paper the meat sat on... The sausage was absolutely amazing the skin on it super thin n just pops on each bite almost no chew to it ( skin ) and flavor on regular n jalapeño n onion one were so good and juicy. Was driving from Florida to NY and was looking for a quick place to stop into for lunch. The people here, customers and staff, are great! Really friendly and gave some great recommendations. We tried one of nearly everything, but the standouts for us were: the Brisket (so tender you can cut through it with a butter knife and not slathered in BBQ so you can really appreciate the taste), the pork ribs (legit falling off the bone and so flavorful), their homemade coleslaw and sweet tea. We also tried other items just to see what we liked, but they didn't compare in terms of flavor to the items above (pork chops were a little on the dry side, collard greens were too sweet for my preference, beef ribs were well flavored but a little chewy, and Mac & cheese needed some more flavor). I heard a lot of good things and wanted to really love this place, especially with all the Coast Guard love that was around the restaurant. You would not think this was a restaurant or that they served food. It is like a meat market that they put tables in, so that you can eat there. I did notice that the trash was overflowing out of the three cans they had out in the dining area. So, you place your order at the counter, and pick your food right there and then you can take it home or to the dining area. I had the brisket and it was ok, but I have had better, including locally. I also had the potato salad, which was decent. My party also noticed that the restaurant did not have wet naps. That should be a must for all barbecue joints. They should also have barbecue sauce at the tables as well, vice getting a small container of it with your order. Parking is easy and they have their own parking lot. I see the potential and I am going to try this place again and see if that was a bad day and hopefully improve my rating. read more

The Mac & cheese was dry and the potato salad was too sweet. Like they used potatoes instead of macaroni and used the macaroni salad sauce.
