Great bargains can be had here, but you can also spend money on produce that you will be throwing away very quickly after purchase if not inspected thoroughly and used ASAP. Make sure to carefully inspect the ripeness / color / texture / firmness of every object and open those packages of berries; there can be hidden mold on many products. There is a reason things are marked down so cheap; preparing a dinner for that evening - go for it. Stocking up for the week - think twice. My favorite bargains are when avocados are 4 / $1 or flats of bananas are $3. A great way to overindulge on some tasty guacamole (get the seasoning next door) or a cheap healthy treat for the office staff. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd visit daily and knock down my grocery bill by 75%.

Bring cash and be prepared so you can quickly pay the employees who are walking around to bag your selections for you. They have a lot of items that are unique and harder to find at other stores, and they have tons of variety! Always make sure to check out the $1 sale bowls for deals on large quantities of super ripe produce (ex. 8 super ripe plums for $1 and 10 old potatoes for $1)

Very convenient to get to just a few miles off the highway. They also sell at the OP farmers market which is how we learned about their farm. We've even discovered new varieties of applied like blondes- crisp and tart, and Arkansas black- softer but with clove flavor. As a Michigander I'm an apple snob & this orchard checks all the boxes for me. Plus, kittens?

When I go older and had my own kids, I told them how much I used to love picking apples with my family. I tried to look up Stephenson's and saw they had closed. After a quick google search, I found Sunflower Orchard and was glad it wasn't too far of a drive. When we arrived, I will admit I was a bit disappointed by the size of the trees. I was hoping for large trees that the kids would have to climb up to get. The disappointment was short-lived because as soon as I tasted their fuji apple I was so excited to try other varieties. We grabbed a couple bags and went to explore their orchard and discovered some new varieties. Our favorites were the ultragold and winecrisp. There was a candy crisp that the kids also liked. I would highly recommend everyone to add Sunflower Orchard to their list of fall traditions!

This is the farms of all small farms. The Huns moved to the midwest 3 years ago from the Fresno,…read moreCA, where they'd been farming since 1984. Now, nessled on about 4 acres, they grow a variety of vegetables and flowers with no irrigation, using sustainable methods (live mulch (i.e., weeds) to shade the crops and renew the soil). They also use built environmental methods to extend the growing season of certain non-native plants, and have even applied for and received grants from the USDA (the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program) to experiment growing ginger in the midwest (local ginger!!!) and to experiment growing bitter melon indoors. The Huns already have an incredible assortment of herbs and vegetables. On last count at the KC Farmer's Market, I saw 3 varieties of basil, 2 types of parsley, bitter melon, of which the leaves and stems you can make green tea (don't give the tea to children or people prone to low blood sugar blackouts), perslin (misspelled), and onions. At other times, there were flowers, heirloom tomatoes, zuchinni, potatoes, and green (and purple) beans. The best part is, everything is extremely cheap, bunches are mostly $1 each. Go there, say hi, and enjoy the stir fry. UPDATE: Last weekend, early August 2008, the Huns had an early batch of ginger--kansas grown ginger? you ask. Yep, it's for real. As far as I know, it's the only midwest-grown ginger being grown around.

I have discovered purple amaranth leaves, different colored beans and many varieties of squash from them. Thank you to these wonderful farmers, providing us with delicious food and being kind to the Earth!
