Heading west on Highway 24 there's a big sign that says "Cider Donuts" shortly before you reach Topeka and the exit is immediately after the sign (I missed it several times). Well this time I watched and immediately put my blinker on and made the exit (it's hidden by trees right as you come around the corner). It's a medium smaller sized store with some produce and cider and cider donuts! The donuts are by the cash register in brown paper bags and sold by half dozen bags for just under $5 with tax. They are really good! I'm used to the ones in Louisburg south of Overland Park, but these are softer and more fluffy cake cider donuts covered in more cinnamon and sugar. They are worth the stop! Just one hour drive from Overland Park, nice day drive. It's just a small building off the side of the road that is filled with yummy stuff. They have an atm machine inside. There was frozen pies and other fruits. Several jams and jellies. Home grown fruits too. We enjoyed visiting and brought lots of goodies home. read more

Rees Fruit Farm is a family business that has been around in Topeka for more than a century and is where you can get fresh fruits and a variety of homemade products year-round. The charming old-fashioned store is located off of U.S. Route 24 and is easily visible from the highway. Being a local farm, the produce varies seasonally. However, apples are the specialty with over 30 varieties grown throughout the year. The fruits are fresh and are all picked and washed by hand. Other products include juices, pies, jams, honey, and other canned and bottled products. The bestseller is the apple cider slush. I did not try it, but I did try the apple cider soft serve ice cream and the apple cider donuts. Both were really delicious, and the sweet but light ice cream was a wonderful treat in the summer heat. The folks at Rees Fruit Farm take a lot of pride in their products and it shows. There are a lot of items to choose from in the store, but make sure to try an apple product (fruit not computer). read more

Way back in the days when the Topeka 501 schools would take us kiddies on a trip of nature adventures. On the way back the buses would pull into Rees Fruit Farm for a cup of apple cider slush. With extra change I would get the sticks of candy. Fast forward a few decades, this place is still open year round. I pulled in to check it out. They still got the variety of fruits and jams and apple cider products. Still as yummy as back in the day. If passing close to Topeka, I would suggest this as a good stop on your map. This place is AMAZING!! They have everything your heart could desire. A super cute table for the little ones to play checkers while you shop. I've been going to Ree's for as long as I can remember. We'd sometimes stop on the way from Manhattan back to KC for a cider slush. As the ice melts in your mouth, you get burst after burst of cider flavor! What an interesting place! All things Apple and fresh. I was lured in by the Apple cider donuts and the cider slush because, come on, those things are delicious! Rees did not disappoint! Everyone in our family was surprised by how much we enjoyed the slush, which we got at about 9:30 a.m. $1 will buy you a medium slush- don't forget to grab a spoon for once your liquid content diminishes.
