While we usually head to the popular area of Palisades Park when craving Korean food, this seemed like a decent option for the northern area we were in. Upon arrival you seem some funky things like italian style decor, checkered table cloths, and a kind of disjoined dining room area. We were seated quickly and served our banchan which I thought was a good selection of vegetables and other commonly mixed side dishes. Service was prompt and throughout our meal we were served by a few different wait staff that cohesively worked together. We order two different dishes (one combo) and one soup and both were very underwhelming. Our pork ribs were overly sweet and lacked that marinated flavor and our soups were not what we were expecting. The jamjatang tasted very bland and wasn't the typical Korean potato soup you expect which is more like a stew, with potatoes, and pork bones. This place seems like it would be more suited for an older crowd that is not looking for salty soups and have limited access to other Korean food options. Given the price of the soups and combos around $15-$18 we were pretty disappointed and agreed we probably would not be back.

We had long been aware that there are good Korean restaurants in Tappan, and now we're sorry that we didn't come sooner. Hong Ban Jang is not your run-of-the-mill Korean restaurant: its menu is expansive, its offerings unique, its portions massive and its taste inimitable. For appetizers we ordered the Fried Glass Noodle Dumplings and Seafood Scallion Pancake. The dumplings are vegetarian, full of japchae style glass noodles and veggies. The pancake was crispy fried and filled with fresh seafood, esp. chopped squid. My husband and son picked every morsel of the yummy squid bits off the plate :-). It's rare to find vegetarian cold noodles in a Korean restaurant, as the broth is invariably beef based. When I saw that Hong Ban Jang offered cold noodles in a bean broth, I decided to try them. What I received was not what I expected: the noodles were solid soy bean noodles, instead of the translucent buckwheat noodles. I was given a pot of salt to sprinkle on the noodles, as the dish itself had almost no seasonings. It was a very unusual experience for us (everyone shared some of my dish). The noodles were tasty despite lack of seasoning, the broth was thick, rich and creamy. We all loved it. My husband ordered the Spicy Seaweed Soup with Oyster and Noodles. My son ordered Spicy Beef Brisket Bibimbap. I had some of the seaweed broth to warm up my stomach. Both reported that their dishes were super nice. For a spacious dining area with no less than 20 tables, there were only 3 waitresses, but you'd think there was a platoon of them, as they possessed some kind of super power that enabled them to respond to everyone's need immediately, check on the customer's satisfaction multiple times, make recommendations, and offer solutions. Their kitchen must also be staffed with super-powered cooks, as they not only have to meet the demands of the premises, but also fill large quantities of take-out orders. In short, Hong Ban Jang far exceeded our expectations, and we will for sure come back to try out other items on their menu!

From the outside, Best Dumpling doesn't seem like much. Nor does it seem like much from the inside. It's a squishy, two-floor space with just a few tables and chairs. On the first floor, most of the available space is taken up by the kitchen and the order window, but that's because they make everything fresh here. Dumplings dominate the menu (along with a few Korean stews and dishes, many of which feature said dumplings). I don't believe there's such thing as a 'best' dumpling, but that's because I love most dumplings I meet. When one of the owners overheard me waffling back and forth between the pork and broccoli/shrimp dumplings, she kindly offered to do a split order. Boy, was that fantastic. My preference is for fried dumplings, and they're done up perfectly here. I gasped quite when I bit into a pork dumpling and felt some of the juices dribble out of its skin. My greater surprise was how much better I liked the broccoli and shrimp. I can't think of another place that offers a filling like this one (plus the other interesting ones they've got here) and it was fantastic, especially with the accompanying garlic soy sauce.
