My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Garcon De Donburi. I had the steak donbori and he had the chicken Katsu with the 626 sauce. They were both delicious! All of the sauces were especially delicious. Went for dinner after a day trip to Mt. St Helen's , 4 stars for the food and 3 stars for service. We had to Call the server over to order and to get anything and the bill , she was the only one working , the owner was too busy schmoozing a large party of friends, leaving the gal to cover everything on her own. We like it and would most likely come back to try again, it's new, so hopefully this will be fixed. The octopus salad was some of the most tender I've ever had . Really good food! We went last night (2 people) and while it wasn't busy, we were seated promptly and attended to quickly. Our server was really nice, the chef in the kitchen waved hello. We got the white truffle and artichoke dip app, gyoza, and the duck croquettes for starters. My husband had the ribs and I got the chicken katsu curry w/rice. My husband and I decided to dine here during our visit in Olympia for lunch on Valentine's Day After finding this highly reviewed place on google. The place was clean and had great lighting. The bathroom was in the middle of renovation it looked like so it had an industrial smell that they were airing out with a portable filter. There was only one server and I knew he was busy with the other guests so I just had to let him know of our requests for chopstick before I ate the food they just served on their table. The food was delicious, the flavors and presentation of the dishes were very well thought out. Our favorite was the clam and shrimp chowder and I later found out after letting our server know that it was our favorite that it had more of an Asian fusion to it with miso, which I was surprised about because I did not taste the miso flavor as the flavors balanced out real well. My eel felt a bit smaller compared to the other pictures on Yelp. So overall, portion did seem a bit small but price is fair. We came back yesterday with our parents and brother for dad's 65th birthday. Our family loved the food. They were going to go to a regular chain restaurant and we suggested coming here instead. Everything from the appetizer, down to the dessert was very tasty. Service was very good as well. We had a good family time and enjoyed our food very much. Tried this out because we'd heard good things about the food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is nicely appointed and impressive and intimate for date night, but what's up with the ultra high bench seating at the windows.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Sit there and you have the table sitting on your lap, so if they ever do a redesign, please shave half a foot off the benches. As for the food, they need to do a little work. We tried the roasted pumpkin and that was both tough and mushy and the sauce was not working. I really gave it a shot, but after a few chews, I had to spit it out in my napkin because I couldn't handle the taste or consistency. Sis for the crab meat spaghetti and it needed a creamier sauce or something. Mom tried the Aburi salmon don and she thought it was okay, but she didn't finish it. I tried the Karaage don and I actually liked it, but I also have had better. I wanted to like this but I felt I was doing all the work to try to like it, rather than sitting there enjoying my meal. I think maybe my standards are a little high and my expectations were definitely at a place beyond this restaurant's reach, but don't let that stop you. Give it a try because people say good things about this, so maybe this place is just not for me. read more

They've been open 1 week and I've been twice. What a delightful addition to downtown Oly. The staff are incredibly nice, the food has been very good, and the cocktails are intriguingly offbeat. The menu has something for most diets but it's a refreshingly strong choice for vegetarians, vegans, and people who don't do dairy. Excellent food! Japanese French fusion. My friend and I had the seafood pasta and the ribeye, both were done very well with a lot of flavor. The scallops were soft and tender, not overcooked. The steak was perfectly cooked and sauced. We had the panna cotta and matcha cheesecake - the panna cotta was creamy and smooth with gentle hits of chocolate and tea - I could have eaten a few of them! The cheesecake was also delicious. Matcha can be bitter if not handled well but no problem here! It was also delicious and perfectly balanced. Neither dessert was overly sweet so the underlying ingredients were able to shine. It's been a long time since I've had a high quality food experience like this. The only downside...the building is forcing them out in favor of something else like a chain type place. Just what Oly needs not really. I really hope they can get relocated and back to what they do. It would be a crying shame to have them disappear altogether. This is a very fine restaurant which should be more prominent in Olympia. I was visiting friends and went there for the first time. All the food was very fresh and did not appear reheated like you see even in a lot of fancy restaurants. Each dish was perfectly seasoned, not too salty, and served at the correct temperature. I tried the broccolini and kale appetizer, another appetizer with mushrooms, the crab spaghetti, and something that looked like katsu. The fried things were not greasy or tasting of old oil. The mushroom appetizer was light and fluffy on the inside and delightfully crispy on the outside. The katsu meat was not greasy or dried up in the inside which I often see. It was nice and juicy, served piping hot, and had a crispy outside. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There were not a lot of people in the restaurant, but this is no reason not to go there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is in the downtown area which a lot of people view as unsafe. I still think downtown for the most part is safe if you take common sense precautions and are just going to a restaurant[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Did I mention that the chef was trained at a Cordon Bleu school and had experience working in a fine restaurant before opening this place? My sister ordered the ribs which were very tough and felt like someone used a bottled BBQ sauce. The fries were good, but they only had ketchup for a sauce on the side (Huh?). I ordered the Tempura/Fried Special, which seemed like a seafood medley that was fried and served with rice. I received one piece of lobster, 2 shrimps, one small piece of cod, and a couple veggies, all deep fried. No seasoning. After dinner we decided we won't come back. read more
