Sofie's Scoops Gelato is a good place in Olympia to swing by for gelato! It's in a building designed like a market area with several merchants there too so you can grab like some Mexican food for example and then swing by here for a sweet treat. I got a two flavor cup of gelato, the Sweet Cream and an Earl Grey fog flavor. The two blended together quite well and didn't make any unfortunate clashing upon the taste buds. Quite a few different flavors to pick from so that gives the place a good likelihood for return trips to explore for future trips. My little toddler friend loved her vanilla gelato and sat quietly until it was all gone so we know it must have been really good! I really can't believe I haven't reviewed Sophie's Scoops yet! WTH!?! Every time my hubs and I visit Olympia, or really drive anywhere near here, we stop at Sophie's for some of the best gelato in all of Washington. I love their Vegan Chocolate and fruit sorbettos and my hubs loves the Olympia Fog and Coffee gelatos. Always super creamy and flavorful. We have met the owner Sophie a few times and she is super nice and friendly. Wish their scoops were a bit more generous but that's my only criticism for a consistently delicious gelato shop that I really love! read more

We went here for gelato after a long, hot day at the kid's museum. I found this place through another review and was super excited to try it, considering I just returned from a two-week trip in Europe where I devoured gelato twice a day...it was hot! Sofie's has some unique flavors, and we tried some of them. They were all good. The kids all settled for vanilla and chocolate. I got the mango, and my sister went for the mint. It might be unfair to compare it to the ones I had in Europe, but it wasn't close. I would still recommend it to someone who hasn't tried gelato and wants an alternative to ice cream. read more

It was about 105 degrees outside and this ice cream store came to the rescue. We had just finished our play time at the children's museum nearby. Everything and every place was closed due to the heat. What is a mom to do. Ice cream for lunch for sure. Lots of delicious flavors. We decided on pineapple, vanilla (it's called churned cream or something fancy), and strawberry. Creamy, delightful, and fresh. Line was literally wrapped around the building, there was ac inside but not strong enough for a day like that but you can only imagine how hot it was with the heat! My son approved and the only thing that sucks right now due to covid is that you're not allowed to sit and enjoy it there. No problem, we took it over to the nice hallway near the taco stand inside. Excellent desserts. The taste, quality and variety are top notch. Organic oat milk, non-dairy ice cream options and the ability to satisfy customer's dietary restrictions is unsurpassed. I had the best chocolate "non-dairy" shake. It took me back to my childhood when shakes were made at the old school diner (thick, tasty, sweet enough and very rich). My friends and I came to Olympia for a quick day trip and we were recommended Sofie's Scoops by so many people and websites! Sofie's Scoops is located inside a market, so there are some other shops nearby as well. Even though we came on a rainy day, the line was still long, which means the gelato fits any type of weather. I decided to get the Olympia Fog and the Salted Butterscotch as a split scoop - note that they do the two scoops side by side rather than top and bottom, which is great since this way the flavors don't mingle too much. I didn't realize we could also get samples, but the cashier was gracious enough to let me try a sample even after I ordered. There was a line out the door, but it moved fast due to excellent, efficient service. Great location in 222 Market, next to Chelsea's oyster house, Locust Cider, and Dos Hermanos Mexican kitchen. Dessert and dinner!Pleasant ambiance on a sunny day, listening to sounds of the sea nearby. I enjoyed looking at the artwork of masks created by local school students, while we waited. Definitely had a few flavors that I haven't seen at other gelato places and I had to try those: Olympia fog, lavender blueberry, and aprium (apricot and plum). Ended up getting a small with lavender blueberry and aprium and while that was a good enough size for me, I was a bit disappointed at how much they put into the cup. Every gelato (and ice cream) place I've been to always put enough where it you could see it round/mound above the surface of the cup, but 1 flavor barely showed and the other was kinda sad. Ice cream is 10/10 Customer service 4/10 I always feel like I'm bothering the employees when I come in. We go at least 3-4 times a month (afternoon/evening time) and not once have we felt welcomed. I understand it's a shop with little space, parents letting their kids touch the glass when there's a sign that says not to, can hardly hear customer's order considering how loud the building is, short staffed, I get it. I've worked in the same environment. There are some frustrating things happening that can be very overwhelming/ overstimulating, but I have never made it obvious that I hate my job or my customers. My partner and I are nothing but nice to these ladies, and always tip very well, but I'm almost to the point where I'm going to stop tipping (because why am I rewarding bad customer service) or I'm just going to stop going... I really enjoyed how friendly the staff were and the delicious flavors and textures of the gelato here. It's a little shop in the midst of a food hall but I think the flavors are interesting and have quite a bit of nuance. My favorites include the olympia fog which is a rose black tea flavor, a pineapple sorbet like flavor and anything with lemon. They incorporate the flavors into a smooth blended texture of ice cream which melts on the tongue at just the right pace. This is the type of ice cream I can probably have a full quart of and not feel gross. It is somehow light and does not weigh me down. It is a bit expensive but all boutique ice cream has gotten that way. One of the other things I praise from Sofie's Scoops is the waffle cone. I feel they have a great combination of crispy and warm and the vanilla flavor really compliments the ice cream. It is extra but so is Molly Moon's and I think Sofie's waffle cone recipe is much more palatable. read more

This is a great place. They had, I think, 12 flavors...all delicious. Some gelato and ice cream places can be overwhelming and just too much to deal with, but Sofie's has a limited number of exceptionally good (rotating) flavors, so customers don't spend all day deciding, and even when it's super busy the line moves pretty fast. The service is friendly and efficient, the prices are reasonable, and the gelato is perfection. My favorites so far are cinnamon, chocolate, mango/lime, and the cardamom (tastes like chai tea!). I've been to Sofie's a handful of times and wouldn't hesitate to suggest it to anyone looking for some great gelato! On my latest visit I went with half sweet cream and butterscotch. If I were to do it again I'd double down on the butterscotch. There isn't anything wrong with the sweet cream, but the butterscotch hits the sweet spot. $6 for a medium which in the gelato world is more than enough to get your full fix. Saturday nights are designed for ice cream parlors- even if it is raining and 48 degrees in June. We powered through the deluge to walk downtown for a treat this weekend and our efforts were not wasted! I was BLOWN away by how delicious our dessert was. BUT to be fair, I thought I was eating ice cream- I didnt realize it was gelato. Gelato is ALWAYS better- it begs the question about why people continue to make ice cream when there is a superior option. We both got larges, which didnt seem huge- but again, I think gelato is usually a smaller serving. Is it worse for me so I should eat less of it? I don't care and will likely never get anything but a large. It was roughly 6 bucks each which felt very reasonably priced for large, locally made, artisan gelato. I got half rhubarb, half chocolate. Chocolate anything is my absolute favorite and it didnt disappoint, but I wish that I had broken out and tried two distinct flavors instead one tried and true. The rhubarb was creamy and unusual and brought me back to the strawberry rhubarb pies of my childhood. My fiance got half black tea/lavender and half mint/lemon balm. He went back and forth with each bite about which flavor he preferred. While I want big aggressive flavors (and colors and noises etc) he is more of a simple and harmonious pleasures sort of fellow. He loved both. The flavors were delicate and lacy. The tea was distinct, but the notes of lavender sang through. I am only removing a star because we rushed down there for 8:00 pm on Saturday based on their Google hours. They were clearly open until 9 (which is correct on Yelp). This was a bummer as we were stressed getting there on time. I'd recommend updating across all the platform Also, they weren't doing samples due to Covid which is sort of understanding. However, if your thing is to have unusual flavors, its a tough sell if you can't do samples. It seems like there are some easy ways around this. How about pre-packaged little samples kept in folded wax paper? Little sauce take-out containers? lined up on the wooden sample sticks? They clearly have a lot of creativity and imagination based on their product, it seems like a solution to this problem could be found so that more timid eaters feel comfortably exploring their treats. read more
