I'm not normally a big fan of chain retail stores, but I remember how the GAP is a local long-ago Bay Area start-up, and longtime native, so I'll go in once in a while. I'm sure glad that we did go in the other day, as we were strolling around the mall. In a small but sure way it refreshed my faith in civility, friendliness, and the in-person shopping experience. As we walked in we were greeted by a young man with his GAP badge that said "Matt", who was folding the clothes left less than tidy by passing shoppers. He was smiling and welcoming and quick to assure us that he would be glad to help us find what we needed there in the store. That moment of genuine customer service instantly relieved me of the burden of clothes shopping ... (my least favorite kind of shopping....arrrgh!). A while later, while we were rifling through the sale racks (yep, I'm that guy), Matt passed through the men's department and directed us to other sale items, and offered to take our armfuls of choices and stow them behind the register. Nice! Finally, when we were in a growing line for the register, Matt came along and jumped in on a register to move the line along. He ended up using his product awareness to make sure that we got the correct sale prices for a couple of items that were mis-marked. Working retail is a team effort, for sure, and we could see that the team working there at the Corte Madera GAP that day were very much in synch ( sign of good leadership), but for my money Matt did a top notch job for us. I wanted a puffer vest in the color black, they had the right style on the floor but only in the colors burgundy and white I was going to purchase the white vest but Van looked it up at check out for me and saw he had a black vest in the back in storage in my size, he went and brought it out for me and made my day! Sexy on a Women's body, adorable for kids, and muscular for men. I didn't expect to walk in here until my friend wanted to check out undies. I didn't know what to expect, they have the most largest supply of women's undies, I think much more than Victoria secret. These are not lingerie but build for comfort and support. So, where are the men's stuff? They are upstairs shared with the kids sections. WTF? Why is that? Men have to watch the kids while the women shop, so unfair! We were shopping upstairs in the men's section and literally had to interrupt the female employee giving out her phone number to a guy trying to hit on her. After we asked a question, they went back to flirting and we had to go interrupt them again when we had another question. It was almost like the woman working here couldn't be bothered to actually help customers and was more concerned with being picked up on. She did have a very guilty look about her though as if she knew she wasn't supposed to be doing what she was doing. read more

This is probably the best Gap in Marin, it has 2 levels and the kids and baby store are in separate buildings. The upstairs level is all women's clothing and Gap Body. They usually have a good clearance rack, if not a giant sale of some sort. read more

This is a very nice Gap! And large too! They carry everything for everyone! The only issue I have is that on a Saturday night, they close at 8. We had just had a bite at Cheesecake Factory down the way and decided to walk over to check out the sales. When we arrived, it was about 7:45pm. My guy and I quickly separated so we could look in our respective sections. About 10 minutes later, The music was turned off. This was my first clue. I thought maybe they were changing the background but no, they were closing. I was looking at the sale rack and boy do they have a lot of stuff. I was going as fast as I could when a woman came up to me and said "I'm sorry but we're closing". She followed that up with "you can take your purchases downstairs". Only having chosen two things out of a plethora of wonderful sale items, I had no choice but to leave with my blazer and my denim shirt. There were so many pants I wanted to try on but they were closing so I had to leave. When malls or shopping centers roll up their sidewalks at 8 o'clock on a Saturday, I can't help but think one extra hour would help these bricks and mortar stores stay open in the future as opposed to people going to the Internet and not shopping "live" at all. read more

Peeked in here after hitting Gap Kids and incidentally, Gap was on the list for my next visit. Two of my friends recently became dads, so I scooted in to check out the adorable items hanging in the front windows, beckoning the walkerby. Newborn baby stuff is sooooooo cute! Pastels, ruffles, flowers.....embroidered caps and little socks. I never realized how expensive baby clothing can become, so it was easy to rack up over $50 easily with just a few items. Since I don't know much about newborns/babies, I enlisted the assistance of one of the staff members who was extremely helpful and encouraging, due to the fact. I walked out with a pair of little blue cotton socks that had little bear faces embroidered on the side and a little cap to warm a very bald head. read more

Sales floor: The store does have a decent inventory IMO. There is, however, a slight discrepancy between website and physical store. The website says (some) baby items are not available in store but when I walked in today I saw pretty much everything I was eyeing online. Staff/Customer service: I was greeted by the sales associate in the baby department and another sales associate walking by offered to help, this was great. The real issue though are the cashiers - they're just rude and they clearly don't want to be there. They don't greet you and they can't make a basic "did you find everything ok" interaction. I'm done with the gap. The customer service is absolutely terrible. The prices have gone up and the quality has gone down. Sales are not as good as they used to be. This is by far the BEST gap store! They have a fantastic clearance section and it's a rare day when I can't find something that I need. They have Gap Women & Body on the entire first floor with Men's & Kids on the second. Sometimes they hide the women's clearance up there so if you don't see it on the 1st floor, be sure to take the walk up to the 2nd. They're super pushy on the Gap Card and usually don't take the shut down gracefully. read more

I was minding my own business and had an armload of clothes to try on. The dressing room upstairs seemed to be full of really, really loud kids. I wasn't aware (until later) that they had more dressing rooms. There must've been five or more children under the age of 7. They were all yelling, singing, screaming, chanting at once at the top of their lungs. The father was egging them on. The noise was obscene. I was doing my darnedest to change quickly so I could get out in a hurry. Of course it was a day when I found a lot that worked clothes-wise. The noise was unbearable. When I finally threw open the dressing room door, I was carrying my jacket and shoes and I said to the dressing room attendant, "Are you kidding me?!" She said, "No." That's it. I finished dressing out in the store and asked to speak to the manager. The manager said she knew about the noise but there was nothing she could do. When I got to the register, the person asked me how my experience was. I told her that it hhorrible, but that it wasn't her fault. I asked to get the manager's name but the manager never surfaced again so I couldn't point her out. When my receipt started to print out, the girl immediately crumpled up the survey portion that comes out afterwards. I told her I needed it. She played dumb and pretended she didn't know what I was talking about. When I told her I knew it was a survey and today was the day I felt like filling it out, she told me that most people don't like to fill it out, so she decided to throw it away. By the way, the girl's cashier number is: 291341. On the way out the door, I ran into the dad and two of the kids he was with. I asked if it was him in the dressing room. He said it was. I calmly told him that he and the kids were very, very loud. He said that he didn't realize I needed to "concentrate" when trying on clothes. I told him that I actually do. Then he said there were six children and they were "just having fun." I said that it's a matter of respecting others around you and not being so loud that other people can't think. A bystander came to my rescue and told him that her daughter was in the dressing room and was "horrified." Finally the man apologized. My question is, why was the manager at the Gap such a rude person? She could have been a lot nicer and have delivered much better customer service. I realize she is probably 20 years old and has no clue, but still. I will shop somewhere else next time. read more

If I could give it no stars rating I would. But unfortunately I have to be content with this one star. I am a Marin born and raised woman. Have been to the village almost every other weekend with my family. One store I will no longer be attending is the Gap at Corte Madera. I have to say I witnessed the manager (I believe I heard someone say he was the genera manager) telling his team they had to be quiet and were not allowed to speak. This really upset me because I needed help with finding my size of work pants but felt awkward asking for assistance from anyone due to the fact that they all looked intimidated. The store was a mess and every fitting room had dust bunnies everywhere. Also, my cashier was very rude. I asked her to go find me something that I forgot and she said "you can go get it if you want but I'll have to set you aside and help out the next customer." When I asked her if she knew where the item was that I needed was and she said yes, I then asked if she could go grab it for me since it'll be quicker. Then she proceeded with saying "sorry but no." Also, trying to make a return is the worst. I felt like I was getting incriminated for trying to return an item..I had my receipt and the item was less than 14 days bought and I STILL felt like they were attacking me. So I fractured my leg and am on crutches, which hella sucks, but really needed some work sweaters and shorts and thought I would take advantage of the donate clothes get 30% off deal going on. So I crutch into the store and am immediately approached by a friendly saleslady who smiles and asks if there is anything she can help me find. I decline her offer and set out to check out the goods. Throughout my search the same lady was on it, taking my items from me and starting a room. She made sure things were not in my way (yah think this would be a given but people are sure a-holes to the disabled) and her or another employee were always there to grab the high or low items or help me find a size. I headed to the dressing room after finding a ton of cute items and had the same quality service as the floor people. I found two awesome retro style pairs of shorts...not too low, not to short but not long, and some awesome sweaters for work. As I paid, the register chick made sure to see which promotion was a better deal for me which was fabulous. She had to split my transaction up, but who cares, I saved $$! Awesome service and cute clothes...I will be back. I would have given them 5 stars even if I didn't find anything just because the service was impeccable. But lucky for me I also found some amazing items :-) read more

I have nothing good to say about Gap, especially its store in The Village at Corte Madera, CA. I have had three encounters in the store which have been bad experiences. On one occasion the manager gave me a hard time while I was trying to return something; she was quite rude. The second time, I returned a one-month old white shirt that had two holes in it, not from anything I did too it. When I returned it, the salesperson said it was dirty and would only give me back about 25% of what I paid for it. Finally, today I went to return a blouse, and after waiting for the sales person to figure out how to give a credit because it was bought on line, she told me the store's system was down. I live about 25 miles from the store and have no plans to go back just to return it a second time. In addition, when I order anything from Gap, it takes far longer to arrive than I have been told to expect. I will never shop at Gap again. read more

I'm writing a random review of a clothing store because I wanted to share how dirty the fitting rooms are. Every time I'm here the rooms are incredibly dirty with dust bunnies and hair balls all over the floors which disgusts me because they don't have a good bench or big seat (small little stool) to put your things on. So I find myself having to put things on the floor as I work through the clothes I'm trying on and am just disgusted. I really do not understand why they can't keep up with at least sweeping or giving a quick vacuum??? It doesn't cost much to get a little hand held vacuum that you can have the fitting room attendant run through each room a few times a day. Come on Gap, get it together. read more

Gap Kids Corte Madera and Uniform Central is a joke We arrived, after a 1.5 hour drive, to shop at "Uniform Central!", Gap's product answer for families like mine. Sadly, there were only TWO pairs of pants, in any size, in the entire"Uniform Central!" product display (huge sign hanging overhead). Really, most schools with uniforms require trousers. A "Uniform Central!" Filled with down vests and printed button down shirts is a joke. Regarding the trousers, I asked "Do you have more in the back?" Um, no, those two pairs of pants are internet returns. You can order them online. Really? What's with the huge "Uniform Central!" Sign? No help with translating the SKU into the online experience, no free shipping if you are standing underneath the "uniform central!" product display with an actual uniform need, in fact, no help whatsoever. Frustrated, I asked, after looking around, if there was even ONE pair of trousers in the entire store that might fit my son. Maybe he us a 12slim, but maybe a 14 slim. If I could find a pair that fit then I could order the right color/style from Uniform Central! online. I was directed to a huge wall of folded trousers as the helpers in the store returned to whatever they were doing (11 total customers browsing, including my son and I, versus at least 6 workers in the store - 4 behind the registers with no one cashing out for our entire visit - 2 others folding goods on the store floor). In spite of the dearth of customers no one helped me to look through the sizes on the wall or bothered to check their computer. I looked through at least 200 pairs of trousers. Not one 10, 12, or 14 slim. I guess Gap must not carry these slim sizes in the store but good luck getting anyone to tell you that or to help you. 30 f-ING minutes looking at 200 pairs of pants. So will the Gap "Uniform Central!" Product fit my son? Who the hell knows. Certainly not the employees at this store, who rang up not a single sale in my 40 minutes there. Certainly not I, who drove 1.5 hours expecting to have a moderate customer service experience where I would leave with $400 of clothes which my son needs for school. None of the employees were "bad" or facebooking/texting, they just were totally clueless that they should help me find the size instead of pointing to the wall, that they should try to sell me something online, that they should leave me with anything other than the impression that my presence I their store was anything other than a minor nuisance until I arrived at their register with all of those clothes that I found for myself. But in this case I didn't....find them for myself. More than a nuisance visiting this store. Rather it's a completely missed shopping experience. On the other hand, it's just the place to go if you want no one hassling you. Of course you might spend 15 minutes finding someone to unlock the dressing room, but no one will ever press you to buy anything. Isn't that worth something? Of course, you'll have to get changed on your own and rush onto the store floor so that you can swap out that one size too large/small of jeans...likely no one will remember that you're in the dressing room. I suggest giving this store a skip and driving over the bridge to Uniqlo or some other store where people might help you out. You can probably make it over the Richmond Bridge in the time it takes you to look through those 200 pairs of jeans. read more

Another time, i was looking for a down vest for my dad...."oh yeah", they pointed over there, over here.....nothing...and of course she disappeared. No sales help on the floor, and when a salesperson finally did show up to help me, the information he gave was useless; the store didn't stock the size jean I wanted (30L) so he gave me to SKU # and told me to purchase it on-line. So I came home, looked on-line and they don't even make that style in that size never mind that they don't list products by SKU on their web site. Cheeez. What a waste of time. He also encouraged me to buy a jacket in a smaller size than was comfortable, and when I got home I couldn't even put a T shirt under it, so now I have to go back to the store to return it. The staff are always nice and the store is clean. Last time we went, we were looking. Through the shirts and we couldn't find the right one, so a nice employee came up to us and asked us if we needed help. Also the weekend we went, there was a "secret sale" or something, so the staff walked around handing out cards that you opened to see how much the sale was. read more

Experienced amazing customer service here so thought it deserved a yelp. Was trying on bras in the women's section yesterday and the woman went out of her way, at the end of the day, to help me make sure I was getting the right one and right fit, make recommendations, etc, and was extremely helpful. It took me by surprise, I've never had someone take that much time or volunteer to do it and it helped me make the right purchases.
