I hosted a dinner event for work purposes at Gan Hoo BBQ. I was not sure if for that function it would work well. It was fine. People enjoyed themselves. We had ample proteins. I was surprised they did not offer lamb, and I wish they did, but that is not a complaint; there were more than enough choices. The non-meat items also were great. I'd put in a plug for the cheese corn, which doesn't sound as if it would taste good, but it does. I have wondered whether it is Korean or Korean American. I cannot locate, based on cursory research, a reliable origin story. It is well attested to that it is a fusion dish. So it is relatively recent; its lineage does not date back to the Joseon dynasty. The king oyster mushrooms grill perfectly. Those are among the meatiest of mycological alternatives to animal flesh. The ambiance is good. This is a place for families, groups, maybe a couple if they had an appetite. Although I am a solo diner often, and I would not impose stigma on a singleton at a restaurant, this is not where I would come by myself -- the format does not make sense. For that matter, if I were dating, I also would not choose this place, unless we knew we would be eating copious quantities not conducive to doing anything afterward other than lapsing into a food coma. They have all-you-can-eat options. That gives you a sense of the orientation. For those who believe it matters, and I do not, this is a Chinese interpretation of Korean barbecue. If you insisted on the more Korean version, that is readily available. I would recommend Gan Hoo, however, to anyone who was hungry and wanted to prepare their own beef and pork, while downing a pitcher of beer. read more

Came to Gan-Hoo for my husband's birthday bc he loves BBQ. Made a reservation a couple of week ahead but did not seem necessary. The place was huge and very spacious! Parking was difficult to find as with all flushing restaurants. The service was great though, very fast, very attentive! I ordered a Beijing yogurt in a lightbulb while waiting and it tasted quite authentic. We ordered the meat stairs and a side of intestines for the BBQ. Honestly speaking, I might have had too high of expectations. I was expecting like melt in your mouth buttery korean BBQ style meat. But this was very different, some meat weren't as fresh as most korean or japanese BBQs, and bc it's self-grill, it can be difficult to control when it's done. We were looking for a BBQ spot in Flushing and stumbled upon this place. We ordered the Meat Lovers platter, which includes beef, pork, shrimp, and some veggies. The portion size is great for two, or even three, depending on how hungry you are. The place is very spacious and have many tables to accommodate busy dinner hours though. Decor was nice and on theme. Each table have a grill in the center and condiments/ spices for your grilled meat. Also get a few complimentary ban chans to begin. You have to scan a QR code at the table to view the menu and then order with the server. The server gave recommendations and was genuine enough to tell us when he thought we were over ordering. We ordered the signature meat staircase, Gan-Hoo featured meat platter, octopus, vegetable platter, spicy shrimp fried rice, and some fried lotus root dish. Overall, I was disappointed by the BBQ. The price for value is subpar and higher than other KBBQ spots in the area. Meat quality is good but the taste of the meat really relied heavily on the sauces and spices on the table. The octopus was pretty tasteless and rubbery, even after dipping in sauce. Presentation and decor is 5 star, but you can find better and more affordable BBQ in Flushing. Also, note if you plan to bring a birthday cake to celebrate, the staff will provide you with plates and they will not serve you, unlike other restaurants where the staff participate in lighting candles and singing to you. A little under four stars. Came here for lunch on a weekend. Not busy at all. I am glad I tried this place, but this was definitely not expected. Ambience is beautiful and classy. Keep in mind, this is not the traditional KBBQ that I would imagine, so if you are looking for that experience, I would go elsewhere. Prices are a little steep here and this is not an all you can eat. This place came with 3 side dishes that were just alright (no kimchi sadly); beansprouts, daikon, and a pickled vegetable. We got the gan hoo beef combo which came out looking exactly like the picture on their website. I was in the restroom when it was brought out, so do not know if they usually explain the different cuts, but did not have an explanation for each cut which was a bit disappointing. The cuts of meat were very high quality. I was a little disappointed that this is all that came with it (everything else you have to order on the side, even lettuce, for an extra charge). At other places, I feel there are usually more side dishes, or steamed egg or soup, but again, just a different type of place. The meat itself was delicious. High quality cuts, tender and made me really appreciate the flavors. Every piece of beef was delicious and it was a great experience. The purity of the meat was also kept as there was a piece of fat used to oil the grill. Of note, you do grill the meat yourself (not sure if this is a post-COVID change?), but there are servers nearby to make sure nothing goes wrong. Portion itself is small (we split this between two people for lunch and saw another person have this for themselves) but it is high quality. Overall, I am glad I tried this place. The server was nice and to the point when I was asking for more side dishes and he said this is not Korean style but more Chinese/japanese style BBQ, not wrong and it was good. We ordered the Meat Lover's Stair Combo ($89.99) which was an assortment of pork and beef cuts, veggies and shrimp! Definitely more than enough for 2 people! The meats were delicious and you cook everything yourself! We also ordered the Bullish Wagyu ($28.99) because it looked cool but honestly could have not ordered that since there were some wagyu in the stair combo. We were seated pretty quickly although they were pretty busy. My friend who had eaten here previously, advised on what we should order. We ended up getting the Gan-Hoo Beef Combo, Thick Cut Pork Belly, Mushroom Platter, Cold Noodle, the Garlic Scallop w Vermicelli and the Big Bang drink. For 3 people... this was A LOT OF FOOD! Everything was good but the scallop. I would pass on this next time. The big bang was actually so delicious I can't wait to go back and get this and hopefully share amongst 4 people at least because it was definitely a lot for 3 haha. The cold noodle was also surprisingly good! We were stuffed to the rim and feeling like we just went to a buffet lol. Came a bit later on a Sunday night and was surprised that the restaurant was still bustling! Great spot for food and drinks. This is definitely a young and hip bbq spot that's somewhat similar to KBBQ but with more of a general Asian fusion twist. We noticed multiple birthday celebrations here, which included a meat "cake" that you can grill and eat. Overall meat quality was fantastic, and my favorites were the lamb and brisket. The only thing sliiiiightly disappointing was the cheesy corn, which was delicious but came out in a much smaller portion size than the menu photo. The wait staff don't explain or give as much detail on the menu items as other restaurants I've been too but since we were familiar it was fine. A first timer would feel lost. The cut of meats were fresh and proportioned as expected. We had the following Teriyaki Chuck Eye Roll was very tender. It was so much that I had to take the rest home. If you're not a big eater one order is enough for three. The taste was good enough for me but If I'm going to be honest and compare I've had tastier teriyaki seasoned beef. Bacon Enoki Mushroom this was ok in my opinion. I don't know that I'd order it again on another visit. Mugifuji Thick Cut Prok Belly this was thick slices of pork and OMG delicious! I'm definitely getting this if ever I return. Ganhoo is my favorite bbq place to go to! They have plenty of seating so the wait is never too long even during peak hours, and I've never had a bad experience with the service. It's lively and fun with frequent birthday celebrations and meat cakes being brought around. I always get the meat staircase and mushroom platter. Came here with my brother during lunch for their Flushing Restaurant week deal and it was a lot of food for a great price! I really liked their décor, it made me feel like I was dining on the set of a historical Chinese drama. We tried: -teriyaki sliced beef: favorite order and it also seems to be more bang for your buck. The marinade was a bit sweet which made the beef taste even better. -flavor beef belly: we cooked this medium rare and it was really good. We chose the beef over the pork belly option. -spicy beef: this I would avoid if you can't handle spice because I'm pretty sure they used Szechuan peppercorn to marinade this beef and my mouth was on fire! -fried rice with wagyu: it was a good fried rice that tasted even better with the small pieces of wagyu meat. Wagyu meat was a bit tough though. -squid skewer: it was already ready to eat when it arrives at the table so this dish I probably wouldn't get again next time There were also small appetizers/palate cleansers: dried pork jerky in a spicy sauce, spicy beansprouts, white radish, and a salad. Also, I don't mind this, but expect to mostly cook the meats on your own. I like this because I can prevent the meat from getting burnt. Service was top notch. Initially we were just left alone but then another server started helping our table and she was great! She changed our grill whenever she noticed that our grill was looking a bit burnt and also refilled our waters. When we wanted to take the leftover food to go, she was super quick in getting us a takeout container. The bathrooms are quite well kept too. They had mouthwash available by the sinks and pads in the individual stalls. It was definitely a pricey BBQ experience but it's justified by the quality of the meats! Both times I've gone here I went after 10 pm, most bbq spots in flushing claim they are open till midnight but most restaurants close their grills early so I appreciate that this restaurant kept their word. That being said I really enjoy the atmosphere all the tables were made out of wood and the plate but the meat came in was so cute it was a giant cow.
