I really wanted to love Gamlin's, but unfortunately the food and drinks missed the mark for us. The service, however, was very good. Our server was attentive, friendly, and pleasant throughout the evening. The Caesar salad was probably the highlight of the meal and was very good. Unfortunately, the steak was underwhelming and just wasn't particularly good. The gnocchi was also not what we expected at all. Rather than traditional gnocchi, it was more like a potato pancake in both texture and presentation. Even the bread was served cold, which was disappointing and seemed like an easy detail to get right. We also ordered a scallop that didn't arrive with the rest of our food, so we eventually had to ask about it. When it was finally brought out, it was cold in the middle. The cocktails were another miss for us and simply weren't very tasty. The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere, and the service was definitely the strongest part of our experience. Unfortunately, there were just too many misses with the food and drinks for the meal to live up to our expectations.

Pescatarian Verdict: #stlouispescatarianapproved STL DATE NIGHT JUST LEVELED Gamlin's did NOT disappoint. The halibut? Yes. The Caesar? Yes. The broccolini? Yes. The tomato salad? Also yes. But honestly, the vibe may have stolen the show. The space is exquisite, and if you can snag a seat at the open kitchen, DO IT. Watching the kitchen work while you're eating takes the whole experience up another level. This is giving date night loading...

They just opened & we went in to check it out. They are still figuring service out but the food there is very good. Menu will change as it evolves. Its a nice space. Dark & moody. Hard to read the menu but the music was at a nice level so you could still have conversation. We ordered gnocchi & caesar, cavatelli & chicken pasta. And shared the flatiron. For dessert tiramisu & ice cream Our waiter was attentive but seemed to be a little unfocused or maybe too focused on too many other things. Overall he was great though. The cocktails are tasty. Will definitely go back to try other dishes as menu changes.

Great start! I was anxiously awaiting the opening of this restaurant and today was their official first day of business. I made a reservation a few days ago and was contacted by email to confirm, as well as by phone this morning. I've never been contacted so much for a confirmation, but I guess that's their standard. I arrived a bit early before my reservation and was greeted warmly and shown to my spot. Since I was dining solo, I picked right in front of the kitchen at the bar. After I was sat, I waited a long time to receive acknowledgment or water. It was so long that I asked this guy on his laptop for some and he said he didn't work here but would get someone. The man that brought the water gave jt to him instead and then when he found out it was for me, reached in front of me to set it down instead of walking around. Facepalm. By the time my server came, I was more than ready to order. I decided to pass on drinks because I need to go to the gym afterwards and I was no longer in the mood due to waiting so long for water. I got the Caesar to start and the cavatelli as my main. After my order was put in, I received complimentary bread and butter. To my surprise, the bread AND butter were cold! I was taken aback for sure but wasn't sure if that's how it was supposed to be served so I let it go. The salad was good and had lots of Parmesan cheese, which is always a plus. I know eating salad these days is a risk, but I felt safe consuming what was in front of me. The wait was rather long to get my entree (somewhat expected due it being opening night). When it did arrive, I spent 5 minutes looking for the shrimp (they're there but tiny) and another 5 wondering if I got the wrong dish. The taste was good but not what I expected. It sort of tasted like ground beef and I didn't get the flavors but overall ate what I could. For their opening night I'd say they did pretty well. I'd encourage the staff to be more vigilant of people being sat (namely because there were at least 4 servers behind me, several that walked past me and no one gave me any water.) Aside from that, it's classy, beautifully decorated and gives an upscale vibe. I loved it and will for sure be back.

    Mushroom lasagna, Nero chitarra

After seeing videos on social media about Gamlin's and learning that not only did they have a matcha martini, but they also had gluten-free pasta, I knew I had to get a reservation! I initially booked a 5:00pm reservation, but some things came up so I emailed them and asked if I could possibly move it to 7:00pm. It was a Saturday night reservation so I didn't have my hopes up too high, but not only did they respond quickly--they were also able to move our reservation to 7:00pm! The matcha martini was excellent, and my boyfriend enjoyed his strawberry negroni! We also tried the guava mule and spicy margarita, which were both yummy. We started with the grilled broccolini, which was SO good! The ricotta paired so well with the dish as a whole. My partner is celiac and hasn't had pasta from a restaurant in well over a year, so he decided to order the nero chitarra with the GF pasta noodles--he said it was OUTSTANDING! He was very happy with his dish! I tried the mushroom lasagna, which was absolutely delicious. Our server (who was super friendly, I wish I caught her name!) brought me over a little bread and butter to go with the pasta course. I believe it was focaccia, it was good I just wish it was served warm! For our entrees, I ordered the flatiron, which was a perfect medium rare! It was served with fingerling potatoes, sautéed spinach, and a delicious chimichurri sauce. My boyfriend ordered the off-menu Barramundi fish special, which had fingerling potatoes, puttanesca sauce, and a crispy fish skin. It was good, it just could've used a little more acidity. For dessert, we shared a scoop of pistachio gelato. It was so yummy! I'm not a big coffee or pudding person, so I wish the dessert menu had a little more variety, but I was satisfied with our choice nonetheless. Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Gamlin's and will definitely be back! We look forward to see how they continue to improve. :)

I was excited to try Gamlin's in Maplewood. It's part of the Gamlin Whisky house family. They had their bartender seat us and immediately took our drink orders. The drinks and food were delicious. However, the portions of food are small so make sure you order an appetizer. I ordered the duck entree and had them cook it as the chef suggested, which was medium rare. It was delectable and I next time I will most likely request medium instead. The bolognese was good, we just wished there was more of it.

We visited Gamlin's Maplewood early Friday evening of its opening weekend. Overall, I'd put our experience at about 3.5 stars, with enough potential that I'm interested in coming back in six months or so to see how things evolve. First, the good: the cocktails were fantastic and definitely one of the highlights of the evening. Both my wife and I really enjoyed what we ordered. They did take quite a while to come out, but once they arrived, they were worth the wait. Based on the drinks themselves, the bar program seems to be starting off very strong. Hopefully the timing improves as they get into their rhythm. We started with the house-made gnocchi with fennel pork sausage, romesco, pecorino and basil oil. This was very good. The gnocchi were surprisingly light and not nearly as heavy as versions I've had elsewhere. I'm also not normally a huge sausage fan, but the fennel pork sausage was excellent. At $18, I would have liked the portion to be a little larger, but that's admittedly nitpicking. The complimentary focaccia was also excellent, although I wish it had been served warm. The timing was a little strange as well, since it arrived after our gnocchi plate had already been cleared. That was unfortunate because the bread would have been perfect for getting the rest of that sauce off the plate. For entrées, the Alaskan halibut with fennel risotto, broccolini, pistachio and citrus beurre blanc was probably the best dish we had. Everything worked really well together and the fish was nicely prepared. At $49, though, the portion felt small. My wife was still pretty hungry after finishing it, which is tough at that price point. The burger had a lot of potential but missed the mark a bit for me. The patty itself was excellent, very tender and flavorful, but I wasn't a fan of the sauce. The bigger issue was that the juices soaked through the bottom bun, leaving it pretty soggy. The tallow fries were good and certainly weren't lacking in portion size. Dessert was the "tiramisu." As a dessert, it was fine. As tiramisu, I was disappointed. It was different enough from what I think most people would expect when ordering tiramisu that I wish it had been described differently on the menu. If I hadn't gone into it expecting tiramisu, I probably would have enjoyed it more for what it was. Service was friendly, but the overall pacing was quite slow. Our drinks took a long time, the bread service came at an odd point in the meal, and I happened to ask the table next to us how long they had been waiting to be greeted by their server and they said nearly 15 minutes. That said, this was literally their first Friday open, so I'm willing to chalk a lot of that up to opening-weekend growing pains rather than judge them too harshly for it. The real test will be whether those issues are still there a few months from now. I liked the atmosphere. It's a cool space and they managed to do a lot with a relatively modest decor. It feels modern and energetic without trying too hard, although I could see the dining room getting fairly loud when completely full. One practical tip for anyone unfamiliar with the area: there is parking behind the restaurant. Don't assume you're limited to finding a spot along Sutton. If Gamlin's had been open for a year and this were the finished product, I'm not sure I'd be rushing back. But judging a restaurant during its first few days is a little unfair. There are already some genuinely strong pieces here, particularly the cocktails, gnocchi and halibut. The kitchen clearly has potential, and most of my criticisms are things that can be fixed. We'll give them some time to settle in and plan to come back in about six months. I'm interested to see what Gamlin's Maplewood becomes once they hit their stride.

The focaccia bread was the best I've ever had.

We sat in the patio and water and fresh hot 2 kinds of bread were placed on the table. Our server, Connor, is so knowledgeable and pleasant. He was patient with us and his wine suggestion was spot on. Great sense of humor and he worked all the patio tables. The food choices were amazing and exceeded expectations. Pricing was comparable with what we expected. The lobster bisque was thick, hot and very filling. There was ample pieces of lobster as well. My wife shared that her pasta was not hard or dry or rubbery but tasted freshly made. Connor shared that the prep starts every morning with homemade pasta. The traditional toasted ravioli were just that, toasted and tasty and the CG shrimp seemed so much more than an appetizer. Meals could be had with just those. I was very satisfied it ordered lasagna anyway. I just had them pack it to go as I was comfortably full. I know there are a lot of choices on the Hill but I assure you this one stands out. We started with the toasted ravioli, and it may have been the best I've ever had. Crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Our party of four was thrilled with every entrée. I ordered a veal dish with a side of pasta, and it was absolutely outstanding. Everyone else ordered pasta dishes, and there was plenty of "oohing" and "ahhing" at the table with every bite. The portions are huge, so we're all looking forward to enjoying the leftovers. Service was friendly from start to finish. We also stopped at the bar before dinner, and unfortunately that was the biggest letdown of the evening. The presentation and flavor of our cocktails were surprisingly disappointing--they looked and tasted more like drinks from a budget hotel bar than from one of The Hill's iconic restaurants. Thankfully, the incredible meal more than made up for the cocktails. With so many outstanding Italian restaurants on The Hill, we've been fortunate to try many of them, and Cunetto House of Pasta has firmly earned a spot in our personal Top 3.
