Went down with some trade in and to check this place out. Based off of the FB Marketplace ads it looked like it has potential. The store has some cool stuff but way over priced. If you can get reception in this place, do yourself a favor and price check these items before purchase. I happened to spot a Silent Hill 2 on PS2 and commented to the guy at the counter that it should be in the glass case. When I looked at it, it was around $100 or so. Which is fairish. I took a few days and talked myself into to getting it. When I went back, the following weekend, the price changed to $150. Wow. I put it back on the shelf and wandered around in astonishment. Some people don't want to make a sale. They did give me $18 in store credit for High School Musical 3, which I thought was odd. He also took some left over trade he rejected the first time around as well so at least they're consistent on that front. Last but not least, be aware they stamp their games, for "warranty" purposes. I mean the actual disc or cartridge. So if you are collecting be cautious that not only are you paying a premium on the game, but they are also defacing it with a stamp. read more

The owner "Darrel" is extremely rude and unprofessional. Charged $75 for a game port repair for a Nintendo switch, upon picking up it was not tested properly and was still showing error code for game port. The gentleman "promised" it was working and it had warranty, if I had any issues I could bring it back. I was back the next day, didnt get a call back until a week later, saying console couldn't be fixed because of a bent frame. How was this missed? Misdiagnosed, and over charged. Then I was told it would be an additional $150 to complete the repair. Do the math. I was then disrespected by being told a complete lie about the device being tested, they refuse to accept the fact that all of this is done in a rush and not in a professional manner. The reviews are completely accurate of this place. It should be closed down immediately. Stay away from businesses with no customer service or simple communication skills. Live nearby and thought I'd support local business. Big sign at register advertises they take AMEX. The cashier says "even though it says that... We don't". Okay. They're not as skilled as they say they are. They're half fast with the repairs that costed me $60 for them to damage it even more than what is was. They damaged my mother board to an Scuf Elite Xbox controller and made it seem like it was just old, used and couldn't be fixed. Not a bad place to find older games or system components for a decent price! But, the shelving system could use some organization. It got old digging through majority of sports games scattered all over the place. And that was nearly the only thing in stock, unfortunately. I understand business- but was told one single person came in to buy out every copy of every sought game... multiple times... circumstances like that, it may be better to implement a policy? The rest of your customers become severely disappointed & don't want to bother coming back to try again knowing one person comes in on the frequent to hoard everything possible. :/ Yes, again, I understand business... but think of it from a consumer point of view. Frustrating. Sometimes empathy is better than money. While I did manage to find a game or two I was not seeking, but took interest in adding to my collection, I was left wondering if they even test these used games before putting them on the shelf? At first, none of the games I purchased would load. (Including marked up ones behind the counter.) After several tries, some began to work. But one is just completely shot- I honestly don't think it was tested upon consignment or whatnot. Because I have other original owned games that work perfectly fine in my system, otherwise I would not be so quick to narrow it down. Please make sure games are properly tested more than just turning the game on! I could not get one to load past the start screen after loading. The best part about this visit was learning of other services they offer besides buying/trading or resale of gaming products- mainly repair! I was shown an example of what they offer as far as knowledge (the employee helping me was AWESOME at knowledge of just about everything before I had a chance to even think of or ask about the topic!) and pointed me towards what had not even come mind but were great recommendations! And really, the customer service at this store cannot be beat as far as being personable, patient, kind & also pleasant conversation of some facts, tips & just general small talk in relation to the subject matter. I will be a repeat customer. I just suggest a bit more scrutiny in testing older games, and maybe implementing a policy for number of copies sold to one transaction/person. The store is well organized, there is a good mix of games from all systems. They even sell arcade cabinets and fix games systems. The two negative comments I have is the Emplyee are not too friendly when you speak to them and I always felt like they were staring at me while walking around. Lastly, the prices on some games are in the very high end for sure. I would guess they are charging like 20% more what's it's worth. But that a hard guess on my part. One of the Best Shops for Retro-Gaming Out There! Alright so I probably would not have checked this place out, if my Sega Saturn didn't die. See although GameSmash is Retro Gaming store, they also do repairs and offer reproduction cases for N64, SNES, Atari Jaguar, etc. So when I realised my Saturn was not working, I tried to find a place to repair it, GameSmash was super upfront and willing to repair it. I was told over the phone that it was likely the Laser Assembly and that it would be $60 bucks for the repair. Which is a great price considering how much a new Sega Saturn would be. The man that owns GameSmash was very knowledgable about every game console under the sun. The clientele was also super friendly and eager to discuss retro consoles. My Sega Saturn was repaired literally the same day too, and I picked it up the next day and was delighted to find it fully functional, for the same $60 I was initially quoted. The game selection and prices were also really decent, nothing seemed overly marked up and the selection was pretty decent, however new titles come in everyday; regardless I was impressed. Its also I feel important to note, that SmashGame sells reproduction plastic clamshell cases, for most cartridge game consoles. These can be found on eBay too but GamesSmash sells them for a much better price. They also sell certain Retro to HDMI adapters. For instance they offer a SNES to HDMI adapter, as well as Genesis to HDMI adapter, and several others. I just feel that with TVs moving away from older inputs such as Composite and Component, that a store selling these adapter is an important find. This place was a gem, and I am super glad I now have another game store I can visit every so often. Definitely check them out if you are in the area, or need some repairs. read more

Took my nintendo switch here because it would only show a blue screen. They said it would be $25 to check out and $150 if they can fix it. They said we had to pay cash. When we picked it up they said they only charged it enough for them to see that it worked and charged us $150. We charged it over night and it is still not working. Went in to get a PlayStation 2 slim console repaired (a console that I play often, mind you) with which all I needed was the top flap to be tightened or replaced as it was a bit warped and wasn't closing all the way to be able to read the disc (which I've just always had books on top of it to keep it closed). Walked in there and after one look could already notice that the place was filthy and there were a bunch of arcades labeled "do not touch" on them (couldn't tell if they're broken or just sold and being ready to get picked up...Not quite desert sky but alright). Whatever, though, it's a game shop, not a restaurant. The cashier at the counter was cool, he took it, plugged it in and turned it on to see if it was working, and then told me to wait for a call to pick it up. Standard procedure. I get a call the next morning explaining that my console was filled with cockroaches and that it started smoking when the technician turned it on. Rudeness of the technician aside, he told me that the roaches were already in there when I brought it in, which is a lie. I don't even have roaches in my house, and if I had to pick between the upstairs room of my clean house (on a shelf in between/beside 4 other consoles that all work) and their dirty, ground level, mid-strip mall store as to which one had the roaches that got into my ps2, I would easily pick theirs. They offered no charge (obviously) and to come pick it up (half an hour drive for me) but regardless, now I'm going to have to pay over a hundred bucks to get another ps2. There's not really much I can say because there's not much I can prove, but you know, let me add to the stack of reviews I should've read before that say that these guys can eat it. read more

I don't know where to start this review. I have a PS4 that has a HDMI connection issue- a pretty common thing for PS4s. It does turn on and once plugged into the TV the connection keeps being lost and reconnected which probably means that the HDMI connector is just faulty. I called them and asked it to be replaced which they said can be done. I live about an hour away. After leaving my console there for couple days I received a call that said it is done and was quoted a repair price for a "Software issue". I must say immediately I was a little skeptical but chose to trust them since they are the experts in the field. I drove there again and back. Once home tried to plug my console in and had the same issue with it- nothing was "fixed". I called the store and explained that the issue wasn't fixed and I asked for HDMI change which obviously wasn't done. The person on the phone told me that the technician will come in an hour so I can drive back and get it fixed. I just asked to have my money back but because they make everybody to pay cash my only option was to drive back and get it. Once I explained that the drive is VERY long the gentleman said "I don't know what you want me to do. A person drove from Texas today to get his console fixed. Also me and my boss both live up north so we drive far too" which I might say is a questionable customer service. I would like to say that he seemed like a decent man in person but it seems like these past two weeks have really taken a toll on him- having to run a curbside service by himself. Honestly, at this point I don't feel like driving anymore because even though I am not driving from Texas it is still a long trip. I also do not have the confidence that this time would be somehow different and magically my console was repaired. I normally would not throw 50$ away like that but I probably already burned that much in gas driving back and forth. So... I would NOT recommend the service to anyone. Maybe if you are lucky and everything goes according to the plan you will get away with an OK job and a working console. However, if something goes wrong an overworked and neurotic employee will explain to you how your problems are not that big and you should honestly just get a life. read more

Honestly, I'm not sure what to say about my first time at Game Smash. There is definitely some cool stuff in here, and I am a collector across multiple consoles, so I'm always on the hunt. With that said, make sure you check inside all your purchased games to make sure the discs are there, never thought I'd ever have to do that?! Bought a collector edition of Fable, supposed to be a double disc set, yet they only put one disc in there? Collectors edition of Madden didn't contain the actual collectors disc, just the generic disc. I had to turn my car around and bring receipt, just for them to say they didn't have the Madden collector disc it was "supposed" to come with, so basically screw you, as if they thought I didn't know what disc it came with before buying it, let's just slop something together for a quick sale, I guess it is what it is. If you buy a cheeseburger and it didn't come with cheese, oh well you still got the burger, right? Now usually if a game store doesn't have the right corresponding disc to a game, they usually say something "before" you purchase, or there will be a label on the game case saying something specific is missing. If I wasn't in a hurry to get dinner, I would've asked for a refund. I "was" going to come back and drop a nice chunk of change on a pretty rare CIB game, even with it being overpriced, anyone who knows me knows I spend and support the mom and pop retro stores, not the corporations (got nothing against you GameStop, but it's the mom and pop retro stores that need the money). But if this Game Smash place can't even put the right discs in their games and even acknowledge the fact, it's the little facts like these that can annoy a collector, and I'll be taking my business elsewhere. If you guys want a legit retro game store in the valley, also a bonus with friendly and knowledgeable employees, check out Fall Out Games, they are great, and they have multiple locations. We had an issue with our kids' Xbox One not being able to connect the headset. We tried online forums AND MICROSOFT support. Microsoft support assured me over and over they wanted to help me resolve the issue only to get frustrated and hang up on me. Maybe it was her first day on telephone support. I needed my Xbox 360 repaired as it would no longer read any dvd's and, after searching around I discovered that Fix & Play had excellent reviews. So, even though I live in Tempe, I had it dropped off by my brother as he left town headed west to Cali. A few days later they called and said it was ready to be picked up which was a wonderful surprise! Several days later on Sunday I called to confirm that they were open and my Xbox was ready to which associate Tony replied that it was ready and to pick it up by 6pm. I take the 45 minutes drive out to Avondale from Tempe and guess what, it's still broken! The dvd tray will not open and initially I was instructed that I'd have to come back!! "Who called you and when did they call?" Tony, the gentlemen working the counter asked me. "I'm not sure, but they called me on Wednesday telling me that it was fixed," I responded. "Well, did he say it was ready?" Incredulously, Tony asked. "Yes," I replied,"That's why I'm here!" This conversation really happened!!! After speaking firmly that I wasn't driving out twice, Tony contacted the repairmen/owner and they instructed me that his car was broken and he'd try to repair it by closing! Really?!?! I'm not sure why all the great reviews but my initial look is that this store is barely surviving, run by employees who have no idea about customer service, etc. Needless to say, I won't ever return to this joint again... and I'd advice anyone to ensure that when contacted to inform you that you repair is ready... ask them to really check that it is in fact, ready! read more

I had been a consistent customer for game smash for about the last year. Their prices had always been on the high side, but you sometimes trade that for convenience. Also, you tend to wait a long time in the line to check out because they typically only have one attendant. My recent experience was not the greatest. I picked out six games to purchase, but after waiting 20 minutes in line, and an additional 20 minutes for the attendant to look up the games. He discovers they do not have three of the games that I picked out from the shelves. While I'm waiting, they had random boxes of stuff on their counters. One marked 25 cents each, so I picked out several Gameboy cases and dust sleaves to add to my purchase. When I get rung up, the attendant indicates the total will be $77. So, I was startled because I had 23 items from the 25-cent box, one game that was $2.99, another that was $9.99, and another labeled $19.99. The total should have been around $33 plus tax. Through discussion I was getting charged $1 for the 25 cent items, and $35 for the $19.99 item. They corrected the 25 cent items but said that they forgot to change the sticker on the $19.99 item. So, they did not want to honor their labeled price, but charged more at the counter. This price was already inflated as the item traditionally goes for $15 on Ebay & via price charting. I was not going to pay $20 more for the item, so I indicated that I will just purchase the two remaining games. If they are not wanting to honor their labeled prices on their items and marks up at register - I'm afraid this will be my last visit there. read more

We made an agreement for a trade on an arcade machine and then when we got there (even though condition of the bottom was made clear) they changed the deal and wouldn't 'trade' but give us credit.
