I went here to buy a ps4 controller for my little brother and the owner sold me a faulty product. The buttons were sticking and obviously heavily used. I brought it back to get a refund as I was told I was able to return it. The owner was completely rude and immediately became irritated at the fact I tried to return it (this was within 10 minutes of buying the controller). Go elsewhere if you don't want to be yelled at and told never to come back to his store for trying to return a faulty controller. I used to come to game portal a few years ago when it was in the Burbank Town Center but now they have moved into the mall. Not a big jump in location but the place is still as jam packed with merchandise as it used to be. I go in every now and then when I'm in the area. I met and spoke with the owner Matt when I was looking for a first party ps3 controller and the price he offered for it seemed steep and when I asked him to negotiate the pricing he was open to negotiate slightly, he even compared similar pricing online and he adjusted the pricing in order for me to get a better price. Very cool vintage video game haven for old school games and some console systems and/or accessories... you are able to sell old equipment here and if the condition is reasonable maybe even make a pretty penny. The lighting is usually pretty dim unfortunately but the service is quit the opposite most people stop in for a quick browse, but I've made one purchase here in the past hassle free... and while there is a GameStop on the lower lever/1st floor GP has better prices and mostly games and systems as far back as atari... not so many modern games on the top floor but plenty of nostalgia all around. read more

I trusted the good reviews and wanted to give this place a chance some time ago. I brought in a dozen of games I wanted to sell, several of them brand new and still in their original factory seal. Cashier was some emo dude who looked like he's not seen the sunlight since birth. I told him from the get go that several of the games were from Europe and made sure to specify which ones were as he was going through them. He mentioned that he would not be able to give me as much for them, which sounded fair. We are in the US after all, even though I made sure all these games had english language and were region-free. He proceeded to spend an excruciating amount of time checking them all one by one on his computer (not sure if it was some internal system or just eBay rates). Seriously, close to 30 minutes if not more. I thought, well, it's taking a while but it might be worth it if I get a decent offer. He offered me $45. For a dozen games, half of which were still factory sealed. And we're not talking shovelware here, one of them was a factory sealed original PS3 Demon's Souls game. It's listed for at least 100 EURO on eBay as I write this review. I could ship it myself to Europe and still make more than what this store was offering me for this *plus* eleven other games (one of them was Street Fighter x Tekken for Vita, like new, which sells for over $30 right now, another one was Vanquish PS3 with its hologram sleeve which also goes for $30, I could keep going on) But that's not the worst part. When I told the guy I would not be accepting his (downright insulting) offer, he decided he would not return the games to me unless I gave him $10 for all the trouble he went through. I took the games back and walked away. Never setting foot in this store again. read more

I came here looking to sell two games and I knew it wasn't going to be worth hundreds of dollars but I was looking to just make a reasonable deal. While the deal would've been reasonable the price was too low for what I was willing to part with both games. That is not something I blame the store for or the employee/owner. I did not get their name but here's why they get 1 Star. The employee mansplained to me consistently while I was there. I have no problem being corrected when I'm wrong but most of the time I was interrupted before finishing my point which he would then explain to me what I was going to say. I know retro game stores don't always make loads of money but it's something you do out of passion. Which is what I was complementing the owner/employee on and he immediately told me the store doesn't make much. It only got worse from there. After I was done and about to leave he said, "you don't have to be rude." That's when I called him out on it and he continued with his "you don't have to be rude." Used to be a very good video game store if you came a couple of years back. Every time I enter it always looks like they aren't finished moving into their shop. Owner isn't very friendly, seems anti social, and doesn't seem to want to really sell games to anyone. Came in a couple of months back and brought in a huge GameCube lot to sell which included a lot of expensive games and accessories. I tell the owner that I would like cash for these games and he tells me that cash value would be less which is reasonable for any game store to do, so I look around the store while I wait and there isn't much that looked interesting to buy and when I asked about prices for games they are more overpriced than what you would find on eBay or other game stores. So owner then tells me he can do $35 cash on everything I brought in. I politely decline and take my GameCube stuff back. The items I brought included mostly the mario games, GameCube Component Cable, GameCube Broadband Adapter, and the GameBoy Player as well. Really disappointed with this shop, I don't know how they are still able to pay the rent for the shop and how they are making any sales this way. I do still go to this store from time to time just to browse but it always looks like they are still moving in and not putting in any effort to get more inventory. I'd highly recommend to take your money to eBay or Game Tower in San Fernando for a better shopping experience. read more

Glad to see this place is still around with all the changes to the Burbank Mall. The space is much smaller than the last location I remember, but the quality and randomness of items remains the same. If you are looking for a certain item and are not local to Burbank, I would recommend calling ahead of time since their selection can be very limited at times. I should also add that they tend to carry a random mix of Japanese & PAL titles. The staff members are still friendly as always and though the selection is small, the store still pays out the most for trades compared to the other local store and GameStop. read more

The Burbank mall hasn't had much luck with the little mom and pop game stores. Aside from GameStop, I think there were two other game stores and now there's a third one with Game Portal (literally located across from GameStop). Let me make it clear that this place does NOT carry any games from after 2006. No PS3/PS4/X360/X1/Wii/Wii-U at all. Everything prior such as retro systems up to the Nintendo GameCube are represented here. That being said, this place has a nice, albeit very small collection of retro games. Let me recap with some Pros and Cons: PROS: --NOSTALGIA. Definitely a whiff of old school games permeates thru the air when you walk in. --PRICE. The retro game prices are on par with those from Game Dude. Some might be too high and some are just right. As for the last-gen games, those can be dirt cheap (like Madden 1999) or way too questionable ($40 for Resident Evil 2), so it's a mixed bag. That being said, they have a Buy 1, get 1 for half off offer. --SERVICE. The guy behind the counter is helpful and can answer most of your questions. CONS: --SIZE. Much smaller than a normal GameStop. Doesn't take more than 30 seconds to end up perusing the whole store. --SELECTION. The store carries a very small selection of titles for various retro system and last-gen consoles. Unfortunately, because of that, you most likely won't find the more cooler stuff (though they do have a few of them behind the counter). Don't walk in here expecting to find a PS2 copy of Marvel Vs Capcom 2. Well, I can't say this place is a good alternative to GameStop but if you've got a hankering for some retro stuff, perhaps you might find something here that'll make it worth your while. Great selection, terrible service. This would be my first time in Game Portal since the GameStop closed down. When I showed up I was greeted with a wide variety of great games; such as a loose Chrono Trigger for the SNES, a few N64 consoles, and Japanese Imports. All of these games looked fantastic and I was super stoked to buy some; however there was one major thing that threw me off and discouraged me from buying anything. The owner of the store felt extremely pushy. From the moment you enter the store, you're greeted with your standard "Welcome to ___" script, but it felt like every five minutes (sometimes less), this man would ask me "do you need any help?" or "are you looking for something?", even when I tell him that I was just browsing. So already that started to dissuade me from purchasing anything, and I wasn't able to pay with a credit/debit card either. I later learned that after leaving the store, the owner actually talked behind my back; using strong language and even pointing his middle finger in my direction. If you ask me, this isn't how anyone should act to customers (firm buyers or even potentials) when working any type of job. In addition to those kinds of behaviors, I learned from a friend of mine who shops there fairly frequently that he once tried to purchase something from Game Portal, to which he paid in full. According to this person, it took over an entire year for them to get their item in hand; once again proving to have terrible customer service. I was also able to find out that the owner doesn't actually pay his employees, so he basically has them doing free labor. I could go into more detail, but if you're in the California area looking for video games to buy, I would strongly suggest going to other places such as GameStop or Game Realms and not wasting your time with Game Portal. read more

Just ask the employee about a game and tell him if you could take a look at it before you buy it and you'll see why I'm giving this store a 1 star rating and I feel like 1 is still too much. Garbage place with garbage employees. Avoid this a place!!! Also, they don't have the prices for any of their stuff. One of the best stores in the Burbank area! On par with customer service compared with Game Realms which is great! Their selection is smaller but they carry strategy guides which many have discontinued holding (even used) but the games that are available do change quite frequently so always give a stop to check out what they have in stock! read more

My xbox had the red ring of doom. I was told by the guys at Game Portal that it should be an easy fix for them. I payed them 60 dollars to repair it, took them a week longer than expected to get the job done. Then after bringing the console home, even though the red ring was gone, the console still did not work: it would shut off randomly whenever I would begin to play a game. I brought it back to the guys at the shop within the warranty period. I left it there for another week (they told me it would take a day or two to assess the problems). When I came back to get it they told me there were no issues with it, and that they hooked it in and it worked perfectly, claiming that my issue was undoubtedly the power supply. Now, after purchasing two different power supplies, my xbox continues to shut down. And now as it turns out my repair warranty with Game Portal has expired. I am 90 dollars in the hole and my xbox is still broken. Thanks for taking my money guys. I am never stepping foot in this place again and am going to suggest that nobody else does either. Either they have no idea what they are doing , or they flat out lied to me and took my money. read more

The owner offers really good prices and has a welcoming atmosphere in the store. The employees are tenacious to assist you or answer any questions you have. I have a good time by just hanging out at the store itself. This is a place that is good for getting games for a good price and the owner know his stuff on another level with videogames. I'm going to be honest, like straight off the bad, not the best video game store in Los Angeles. I think they most certainly have the ability to become one of the best, but it just doesn't feel inviting, and you'll spend more time looking than buying. Variety is very scarce. Do they have great games? Yeah, but I bought them all. I found a boxed copy of Kid Icarus on GameBoy and they had a sale going on. I spent 10 minutes trying to find a second game, and I ended up finding F-Zero GX. It's not that they don't have games, but it's hidden in all the other games that no one really care about. As well, the prices Are bad, they're actually pretty good, but I don't care about that one Sega Sports game. As well, the atmosphere is just not there. There's a whole depressing feel from how everything is lined up as if it was GameStop. There literally a boxed Billy and Mandy GBA game on the floor, and I just don't care. I really like this store, and maybe I was just at the wrong time or the wrong day, but literally if they moved a couple things around, separated the shovel-ware, and maybe did something like play video game music in the store, it would be a little more inviting and pleasant. Is it a good store? Yeah, but other than what I bought, nothing was truly memorable. read more

In a time when Gamestop practically rules the game-selling market, you'd think the few remaining stores like Game Portal would at least try to adapt. Unfortunately they haven't at all. Actually, they've regressed. A lot of the reviews on here are obviously planters/friends of the people who work at Game Portal and I'd question whether or not they've even been inside before. Firstly, the prices are TERRIBLY EXPENSIVE and grossly OVER-PRICED. Now, I'm not the biggest supporter of Gamestop, but at least there's some logic to their pricing. I found a NEW game at Gamestop for $8.99--that was NEW. I checked for the same game at Game Portal and it was literally $18.99 used. USED. This is consistent with EVERY title, regardless of system. Certain games are bargain-bin fodder and can be found (once again) brand new and sealed for $5. However, these same games are double, triple and even quadruple the price USED at Game Portal. It's unbelievable and shows that no one working here has even the smallest grasp of understanding on the gaming market or trends. Secondly, the selection is severely limited... Unless you enjoy playing poorly reviewed/received games. Thirdly, the young staff just doesn't know how to talk or interact with customers beyond saying "Hello". It would also be a good idea to not blast rap throughout the store in which every verse is an obscenity laced threat. Maybe play music that coincides with what you're selling? read more

Went in to see about either fixing or replacing my game controller for my PS3. I met up with Arthur and he could not have been any more courteous and professional. Arthur is the man! :-) Within 5 to 10 minutes he took a look inside of my game controller and fixed the problem free of charge. Among that he had all types of current and classic home video games including on old Intellivision and Atari 2600 from the 1980s. Since I try and support local businesses as much as possible, so I decided to hit up Game portal instead of Game Stop. This place rocks. The selection is great (even a decent amount of old Nintendo games...no Contra though, sadly), probably because they buy and sell used games in addition to new. Also, the guys are completely awesome. The dude I spoke with didn't try and upsell me at all, and he even had jokes. When I was deciding between two different modes and clumsily dropped one, he said, "All right, I guess you're getting that one." And I did, because it sounded like a veiled threat. But I'm happy with my new headset, and happy with the price (better than I've seen elsewhere). When I'm done lowering the self-esteem of children around the world, I'll probably head back in to Game portal; apparently they also fix systems, and my Nintendo could use a tune-up. I can't get Punch Out to work, and Super Macho Man was getting mouthy last time we went at it.Overall Amazing place for Retro Game and all Old Games read more

So I am a big fan of supporting local businesses just like this one, but unfortunately to say this place Will not be one of them. I randomly went in there after seeing a movie at the theatre the other day to ask about fixing my old backwards compatible PlayStation 3 game console since they are a video game store. They said yes then started to quote a price for the repair. I was totally caught off guard on how expensive and overpriced they were. I had called around a couple months back to other places and had a rough estimate of how much it would cost to fix my broken PS3, but this place was ATLEAST $30 MORE!!! RIDICULOUS.... Take ur business elsewhere. (Also.. While I was there, some guy came in with some simple issue with his iPhone and they worker had no clue how to fix it...
