If I could give this place 2.5 stars, I might, just because the first and second time I went there I had a decent experience. The food wasn't bad, not too much to complain about. Nothing special but not terrible.
However, the last time I went (yesterday) was a different story. I like the environment of the place; it kind of feels like an upscale hunting cabin or something. I do not like the environment of the area we were seated in. The host sat us in the front, which is a couple steps below the main floor. At first, I thought it was great because we got to sit down there by ourselves so it was nice and quiet. After sitting there for ten minutes I changed my mind. I don't know why they seat people there. It looks unfinished, as the ceiling is falling apart, dirty, and DRIPS WATER! It was dripping onto a ledge above the fireplace (which was a little too close to our table) and tiny drops were splashing onto the place mat where my boyfriend was sitting. I wanted to say something to our waitress so we could move, but my boyfriend insisted that it was fine and it wasn't bothering him. The rest of the restaurant is pretty nice, so I'm not sure what was up with that front room but they should really fix that or not seat people there, especially when the rest of the place is empty. So that was that.
Our waitress was super friendly and seemed interested in serving us at first. As time went on, she seemed to be in a hurry the whole time, rushing around as if the place was packed (it wasn't). She hardly had time to ask us how our meal was.
So we ordered. I got the Garden Vegetable Medley, with chicken which was $3 extra. It was listed as: seasonal vegetables in a garlic wine sauce, finished with a basil pesto atop pasta. I asked our waitress what the vegetables were and she stated, "I think it's mostly broccoli and carrots." I wasn't too sure about this, but I took the chance anyway. My boyfriend ordered Chicken & Portobella, boneless chicken breast topped with a grilled portobella mushroom and baked crumbled bleu cheese.
I had a salad with mine, and he had the New England Clam Chowder, which he said was very good. I realized after our waitress left that she never asked me for my salad dressing, so I assumed they just had a house dressing. I'm not sure what dressings they have, but all I got was what looked and tasted like classic store bought Italian dressing, which I am fine with but it would have been nice to have options. Standard salad, pretty decent, a lot of croutons. As we were finishing these up, our waitress came back and said to my boyfriend, "they're just about done with your food, but what kind of potato did you want? They have baked, french fries.. etc." He ordered the baked potato with butter.
About ten minutes later, our food came. I should also mention they have a great house brew, which is a brown ale. It tastes nutty and delicious. But anyway, the food. Since our waitress was in such a hurry, she spilled a little bit of the sauce from my dish onto my dress as she was placing it on the table. A quick "sorry" was all I got but whatever. I won't be too picky since it was only a small amount.
My boyfriends food looked and tasted great. The vegetables he got were cooked in what I think was garlic and pepper and they were awesome. He didn't get the butter for the potato that he asked for, but claimed that he probably wouldn't have used it anyway. We let our waitress get off really easy.
My dish, however was not very good. There was so much sauce that it was hard to eat without splashing myself. It was more of a giant soup. The white wine sauce tasted like it wasn't cooked long enough or flavored enough, or something. And there was way too much of it. There was no sign of the basil pesto. Some parts of the chicken were good but some parts tasted burnt. The "mostly broccoli and carrots" was actually zucchini, broccoli, and a lot of onions. No sign of carrots. The vegetables were okay if I could get most of the sauce off, but they were nothing special. I ate my boyfriends broccoli instead because he doesn't like broccoli, and I loved them. It did come with four triangles of garlic bread, which were very good but they were a little soggy from the sauce. So maybe I just got a bad dish, and maybe the current cook didn't know how to make it. Either way, it was nothing special.
I took the majority of my food home, in hopes that I could make it taste a little better at home. I haven't tried yet, so we'll see.
I'm probably not going to go back to Gabriel's Gate anytime soon. There are a hundred way better restaurants in Buffalo, but this one seems to be good for some things and not good for others.
But whatever you decide to do, avoid sitting in the front or you might get splashed. read more
