Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, but I was underwhelmed with Gabriel's Gate and I'm disappointed because it's been on my list of places to try for a long time now. Came in around 8:45 on a Sunday night and wanted to find a spot for two at the bar but there were no seats available so we were escorted to a booth by the hostess. The lighting is pretty dark inside with dark accents, seems more like a place I would want to come dine at on a cold winters night instead of a beautiful summer evening. I was so surprised when I checked out the beer list, I convinced myself that the list on the table had to be just their bottled beers and that there would be a separate list for their crafts on tap or something! Turns out they did have more on tap but they were even more boring than their bottle offerings. Not one local brewery. Gabriel's Gate had their own beer on tap, a brown ale, but I was hesitant to try it so we just went with blue light. Our server was super kind and friendly and is the sole reason why we might check out this place again at a later date. We ordered a bowl of french onion soup to start. I ordered the chicken portabello dinner, which came with a choice of soup or a salad. You couldn't choose the french onion soup as your soup choice and their soup of the day was a tomato basil so I went with a salad. The salad came out with the french onion soup and was your standard, iceberg lettuce with red onion, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. The balsamic dressing wasn't anything special. The french onion soup was the best part of the entire meal. I would absolutely come back for that at a later date. The cheese was so delicious and the broth was perfect. The chicken portabello said it came with a soup or a salad but then when I ordered it, I was asked what kind of starch I wanted; my only options were rice pilaf or french fries, so I went with the fries. The food came out pretty quickly, we weren't there long, so that aspect was good. The chicken portabello was disappointing, primarily because the vegetables and rice pilaf were loaded with butter and salt and it killed the dish for me. The chicken had sliced portabello on top which was then finished with melted crumbly bleu cheese. The bleu cheese alone was salty, it didn't need to be paired with additional salt from everything else on the plate. You think you're choosing a healthy route with the grilled chicken and vegetables, but it's not all that healthy. Like I said, maybe I ordered the wrong thing, maybe this wasn't the right dish to get here. My boyfriend got the Edward Street sandwich which was grilled chicken breast, spinach, crumbly bleu cheese and came with chips and a pickle. He thought it was good, I didn't like it. I thought it had a strange charred taste that didn't allow any of the flavors from the sandwich come through. He also got a single order of wings, cajun, which was a dry rub and they were not good. Perhaps it was because it was a dry rub, but still, they weren't anything special. Like I said, I could see myself coming back here because the service was good and the french onion soup was delicious. I would probably stick to a burger next time though, or come to brunch, word on the street is they do a decent brunch. read more
