We're seated and the waiter notices we have beverages from the bar. A few folks in our party need a refill. We mention we're looking forward to wings and he alerts us that it's going to be awhile...well over an hour. Ok, that seemed oddly excessive but, it is what it is, and so we immediately place an order for wings and a few drinks. The waiter disappears for about 15 minutes then returns to take our food order. In unison, the group asks if he placed the wings order. "Uhm...I thought you were waiting". He realizes his mistake and literally runs to go put the order in.
Realizing that it was going to be a while before eating, the group processes what appetizers to get...mozzarella sticks, fries and nachos. Now, the appetizers took a surprising long time to show, which the group questions the waiter on. In response he informs us that the fries and mozzarella sticks are actually fried in the same frier as the backordered wings.
...uhm...ooookaaaaaayy. At this point, I'm starting to realize that there may be a management issue impacting the situation we've found ourselves in.
The fries and sticks show after we had been at the table one hour. The fries were good. However, half of the sticks didn't have ANY cheese inside...just tubes of breading...delicious!
I thought to myself that, since they're commingling everything in the same frier, maybe the cheese would show up stuck to our wings!
Strangely, despite their not requiring the use of the one grossly overused frier, the nachos came out even later! The plot was clearly thickening at Gabriel's.
While we're waiting on the illusive Buffalo wings, a nearby table finishes their meal. They leave and the table is cleaned. Another party is seated and they place their order.
While all of us in our party are starving (and aging) the other table's wing order is filled! They dig into the delicious wings with fervor! The clock continues to tick and I'm wondering if the place is going to close before our wings show up. After what seemed to be another hour later, they do!
Now, I signal the waiter over and simply shrug my shoulders pointing to the table in the process of leaving and ask why?
The waiter then states that "because our wing order was large, others were served first".
...At this point, you could have knocked me over with a feather. Ok, on what planet does THAT make sense? It strikes me that orders should be processed IN ORDER RECEIVED. Otherwise, a "big order" could potentially be delayed for hours as "smaller ones" come in...hmm, I guess that's what happened to us!!!
Now the normal human tendency is to try to explain odd events in order for them to make sense...and believe me when I tell you this was one odd event. So our group turned to mulling possible explanations as to why this was occurring. Aha! It's that, for some strange reason, we must have been perceived as Patriot's fans rather than the Bill's fans that we are. It has to be!
To be clear, the only aspect of this that's on the waiter is not getting the wings order in when he was asked to.
The redemption is that we were all enjoying our time with one another and it was fun night. I'd give our group a five-star rating...but that's not the point of Yelp...so it doesn't influence the rating here...this place simply seems poorly run.
I'd also offer that our crew is very low key and chill, so I was apparently the only person that this absurdity was getting to. Maybe it's that everyone at the table has been through this poutine before...I mean "routine."
"But it's a Buffalo institution!"...ok, ok...it's a Buffalo institution that needs better management!
Now, I'm not questioning the positive reviews, because they ARE accurate. IF you have the right sized party, at the right time, this place is great!
I can only offer that they need more friers. Or, if that's simply not possible, then focus on the wings, and eliminate most/all other fried items from the menu, reducing the backlog.
...in hind site, maybe the burger would have been the way to go. But, then again, maybe the burgers are fried. read more
