I stopped in for a quick lunch before going to a movie at the Balboa Theater and my group of 3 was able to get seated right away on a Sunday around noon. We ordered a few items to share: - Spicy thinly sliced pig ear: the pig ear was the perfect texture, and it was flavorful but wasn't spicy at all. The Chinese name has red oil in it, but my plate didn't have any chili oil residue on it (maybe they forgot?). - Chives pancake: I liked how thin this was, though the English name is a bit misleading. It's more like a chives pocket, rather than a pancake like a scallion pancake. The pancake was pan fried golden but not super crispy. - Boiled Napa cabbage and pork dumplings: these were pretty good but nothing to write home about. I wish the skin had a bit more QQ texture. - Pork xiao long bao: I'm very picky about my xlb and unfortunately this one wasn't it for me. I wish the soup was more flavorful, and the skin was thick but somehow still broke apart too easily. Service was fine - they were quick to serve food and otherwise left us alone unless we flagged them down (just the way I like it). I know dumplings are their specialty, but I ended up liking their appetizers better. It's cool that they sell their own frozen dumplings though, for those who like them. New favorite dumpling spot in SF! Everything we tried was SO GOOD. We got beef noodle soup with rice noodles, which was incredibly flavorful and had two different cuts of tender beef. Normally I'm not a huge soup person but this was soo delicious and I couldn't stop eating it. Would 100% order again! We tried two types of dumplings (one pan fried and one boiled) and both were amazing. Good filling to skin ratio, and the pan fried ones had great flavor from the oil. The fillings were also unique and both yummy in their own way. The beef pancake was great (4 is a lot) but probably wouldn't order again (I'd try the chive one next time). The chicken wings were the only thing that I thought were just ok (the five spice seasoning was too strong for me) but my boyfriend loved them. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu!! Such a little gem in the neighborhood. Sure, lots of places have XLB but you can taste the love and quality in each bite. Our favorite dumplings were the boiled pork and cabbage and the beef and onion. The wrappers you can tell are homemade and just the right thickness that envelop little juicy flavorful nuggets of meat filling. It's a treat and very filling. My first time to this dumping restaurant. I was impressed that that hand made all the dumplings on site . You can watch them through a window and there are to go boxes of dumplings for sale . We bought two boxes of shrimp , chive and egg dumplings. You can order the dumplings in soup ( my favorite) , pan fry dumplings or steamed dumplings and eat in dipping sauce . We tried a few dumplings ( mushrooms chicken , beef , shrimps in chives with egg ) . They all tasted excellent! We ordered the beef pancake ( round shape pan fried ) that was a disappointment. Very much wanted to love this place, but I found a few things to nitpick about. 1. I just can't get over how they use those little foil cups for the XLB. The XLBs tend to get stuck and rip apart - well they did so that was a bummer. 2. I did enjoy the pot stickers though. They were very well made.. and the level of frying was pretty uniform too. I think they're known for their boil dumplings, so we didn't get, we got the same dumplings pan seared and the flavour was good, but not incredible. The highlight was the beef pancake, a crispy outer shell which was filled with a soft beef mixture. That had a great balance of textures and really let the flavour of the wrapper shine through. The location was clean and you could watch several women preparing the dumplings. We ordered a tofu/cucumber salad which was tasty but overly salted. We tried a dumpling soup dish and potstickers. The portions were reasonable in size, and the dough was fresh tasting. The fillings were small. Service was prompt and professional. So good! They have many different combinations of dumpling fillings. We went with the three treasures, and the mushroom & chicken filling, one with soup and one without, they were both so good. The soup that it comes with is filled with seaweed, and a light savory broth. I highly suggest adding vinegar to the broth to bring out the flavor even more. What a lovely, humble little spot. 4 of us showed up around 730pm Saturday 10/4 after hardly strictly and there was already a line out the door. We were lucky and got sat in about 35 mins, the owner and staff did a great job dealing with the crowd of hungry folks that all really wanted to eat! This place must be mom and pop which made the vibes really great. We ordered a lot of food and although they may not have the variety of types of dumplings as some of the more well known spots, the quality was incredible. 4.5 Yelp Stars*** Stopped by here for lunch with my family today! Right when we got inside around noon, it was quite empty and quiet. Within 20mins, it was full house (so crazy!). Guess we got lucky to secure a table right away. The service here was excellent! The waitress noticed my husband and I strolling our babies in and seated us at the corner so we had more space to put our double stroller. She even pulled down the blinds for our comfort since it was very sunny. Then, she grabbed a high chair for our toddler and came back to us a few minutes later to see if we wanted to order a drink first as we settled down to look at the menu. Very attentive and quick! Since my husband was craving dumplings, we ordered the boiled mushroom and fish dumplings, napa cabbage and pork dumplings, xiao loong bao, and two cold dishes: one potato salad and the other dried bean curd salad. All the items were very light but in a good way! The boiled dumplings were quite tasty! I preferred the napa cabbage and pork one over the mushroom and fish one because it had more flavor and sweetness in the broth. However, both were very settling on the stomach and body, especially on a cold day! The dumpling skin was so fresh, better than most dumpling spots in the city! Tasted like they just wrapped it! Our two year old toddler literally half a full plate of the 14 pieces of dumplings by himself in two settings. He loved them! We were surprised at how much he ate because he became very picky with dumplings lately. The xiao loong bao was only okay in comparison to other dumpling spots. It definitely needed more flavor in my opinion but still good. They did not serve it very hot but warm compared to other dumpling restaurants, so I was able to pop the dumpling in my mouth without biting a hole on top for the soup. Both cold dishes were very enjoyable! Their potato salad dish had a nice tangy and spicy kick but our favorite spot for that would be at Tasty Place in Millbrae. Their dried bean curd salad comes with cucumber, carrots, and what tasted like sesame oil with a bit of vinegar. It was quite refreshing! Prices for dumplings were not cheap, but they gave much more in quantity compared to other dumpling restaurants. In addition, they also made their dough fresh and there was a window stand for customers to watch. That was delightful! Overall, great place that I would recommend. When I saw that I love Fuwa Dumpling, I mean it very literally - I often find myself daydreaming about how delicious their dumplings are and wondering when I'll be visiting them again. Fuwa Dumpling, true to their name, offers a variety of dumpling dishes with a plethora of fillings and prepared in a number of cooking styles. In addition to their dumplings, they also offer a number of appetizers as well as a fan-favorite beef noodle soup. Just about everything is made fresh and prepared in-house, they even have a little station at the back of the restaurant where you can see their employees expertly crafting the delicious dumplings that they serve (a la Din Tai Fung style). From the outside the storefront is quite unassuming, but once you step inside the restaurant you're greeted with a clean interior with plenty of seating to sit multiple parties during a dinnertime rush. Service is impeccable as the staff is quick to take your order and just as quick to serve the dumplings straight to your table hot and fresh. Speaking of the dumplings, patrons can chose from the traditional boiled dumplings, along with a pan-fried option, and xiao long bao too. As I mentioned earlier they have a wide variety of fillings from the traditional napa cabbage and pork, to more modern fillings such as their chicken and corn one. For my first visit at Fuwa Dumpling, I decided to stick to the tried and true combinations ordering their Napa Cabbage & Pork Dumpling, the Pan Fried Onion & Beef Dumpling, and the Pork Xiao Long Bao. From ordering to dining was about 10-15 minutes (if not less), which in the grand scheme of the meal is practically no time at all! The food was served piping hot and ready to be enjoyed. As I mentioned just about everything is made in house and you can really tell based on the quality. The dumpling skins are thick, chewy, and absolutely delicious, and when paired with their flavorful fillings it's a bite to die for. Personally, the xiao long bao wasn't as big of a hit for me (which makes some sense given that Fuwa Dumpling's special is their dumplings, and although xiao long bao could be considered a dumpling it's still quite a bit different), and I would probably pass on it in the future. A nice team oversees this spot, but my food experience was "just okay" despite the glowing write ups and delicious looking photos I saw before heading here. It's a schlep out to Fuwa in the outer Avenues & a mixed experience: the cucumber salad was a solid, simple rendition, delicious garlicky with macerated cucumbers, while the chive pancake was crunchy and quite plain, despite an addition of chili oil, soy sauce and vinegar. The service experience was positive and attentive, with tea being refilled and many smiles. A very clean, fast food sit down dining room. Three stars for food, rounding up to four when including service.
