I have been going to funky murphy's for a while now, the food is usually okay and the prices are very reasonable. However, today i ordered steak tips with fries, and my partner order a blackened shrimp salad. There was no seasoning in the steak tip and they tasted boiled. The fries were not fresh, they tasted like they were warmed in the microwave. My partner got a Caesar salad with crotons and soaked in ranched dressing and a few shrimps thrown on top. The service here is horrible. Went on a Monday evening (not busy at all) with my family from NYC and my 10 month old daughter. I asked for a seat by the window and was refused a table in the front of the restaurant because "it's basically the bar area and kids aren't allowed to be in here." I wasn't even told this nicely, I got major attitude as if I should've known that. We then were placed in the back of the restaurant (literally next to the kitchen). It was so dark and quiet back there I was actually insulted to be seated there. Our server was rude and never once checked on us or asked if everything was alright. Fast forward to one drink later, we asked for the bill and left. As we leave the back of the restaurant, walking towards the front, "bar area", what do we see?? Not a good night Have been to Funky's many times. Went in for a meal on Friday night and our waitress hardly looked at us, brought the appetizer and the meal within 5 minutes of each other and never came back. I had to ask a different waiter for the bill after 40 minutes of no-one checking on our area. Some college kids actually got up and sat at the bar for better service. The staff at this restaurant are unfortunately very racist and I've witnessed waitstaff treat people of color differently. Their whole demeanor is different when not serving white people. They turn rude and sassy. Particularly the manager Gina O'toole and the waitress Catie Horgenshea. They are very friendly to white people, and turn rude, cold, and inattentive to people of color. They act like any request is a major inconvenience. They never refill water so if you get spicy wings, bring a water bottle. (But then they'll kick you out and accuse you of bringing alcohol in it even if it's sealed) I've witnessed them kick out or berate friends numerous times for silly, made up reasons. I was a bit disappointed with this place. My friend and I went for a quick appetizer and a couple of drinks. I ordered a margarita which cost $12 and she ordered a piña colota $8, they tasted okay. The nachos tasted really good but the calamari was overdone and had no taste. It was my first time going to Funky Murphys and it will be the last. Our server was misguided, judgmental, and condescending. It was an early, not at all busy, Friday evening that a friend of mine, and I went to this restaurant. Our server came to our table and didn't bother to introduce herself or properly greet us. I asked for a bottle of still water to which she replied: "We have Saratoga, and we only sell carbonated bottled water". I then said that I don't drink carbonated water, and also told her I didn't want tap water. I further said, "It's ok, I have a bottle of water in my car, when I leave, I can drink it then". The server clearly wasn't listening and she told me that the patrons aren't allowed to bring bottled beverages in the restaurant. My thought was, it's a bottle of water, Is the restaurant that desperate to charge patrons for water? If the food is good, it doesn't have to focus on selling Saratoga water, now does it. At this point, I was not happy and didn't order any food. My friend decided she would still order food after the uncomfortable exchange between the server and me. She ordered buffalo chicken wings and nachos. My friend called the server and told her the wings didn't taste right; and that she had ordered it many times and it didn't taste right. The nachos were clearly overdone and my friend told her it was overdone. The server's response was: " Well, I'm not taking them off the check". My friend paid the check and left the full plate of nachos and wings on the table. Prior to leaving, we asked to speak to a manager, but there was not one available. I will never go back. read more

We came to Funky Murphy's to watch the Liverpool match (11:30 start) and we were greeted by the bartender and invited to sit anywhere. She immediately put on the pre-game show and we ordered beverages. The Guinness was well-poured and delicious. Coffee was just ok but it's coffee. Clam chowder was excellent and we ordered the Combo Platter to munch on when the ggame started. PS they have the game on all the TVs and the audio running through the sound system!! We had ordered extra chicken tenders instead of jalapeño poppers and had asked for them plain. They inadvertently tossed all the tenders in Buffalo sauce but our server noticed right away and ordered some extra plain ones. Jen was super attentive and it was a great place to watch the match. We ordered the wedge salad, Cuban panini and Uptown Club panini. All were excellent. We will be back!! read more

Got here around 7pm on a Monday night and it was pretty empty, which is to be expected. Given that, we sat at the front of the restaurant, near the open mic night. The live music was really great, and was a nice treat as we didn't expect it. We ordered the Monday night special, which is a drink plus 10 cent wings (come in a minimum of 5) and 10 cent tacos (come in a minimum of 4). The guac we got as a side for the tacos was the most expensive part of our meal. The bbq wings were amazing, but the tacos were not that great and I wouldn't recommend them. We also ordered margaritas, which were okay. I definitely would come here again on a Monday night for wings, a drink, and the live music, but may not necessarily come another night. read more

The perennial summer special that I am craving once again is the steamers all you can eat for $17.00. Definitely worth it. Worcester local here. Used to come to this place for years. I get off my flight and decide to have a beer here before I head back to my apartment. They denied service because I had a backpack. Great spot to grab a cold beer and a bite after work or in the evening. the front of the bar is open during nice weather for an added ambiance. They get very busy in the evenings but the service is decent and the food has always been fantastic. My wife absolutely loves this place and tells everyone we know about it, telling them to check it out. Our favorite is their Calamari appetizer, it is lightly battered and fried without being greasy or rubbery like so many places that pour it out of a freezer bag into the fryer and then serve it with cold marinara. Also, the topping of fresh garlic with olive oil and hot peppers is something we have not found in any other place. While everything on the menu has been served to perfection on all of my visits I have a hard time passing the Seafood Scampi, again another unique prepared dish that I have been unable to find elsewhere in my travels. Bland food. I got steak tacos that consisted of few small steak strips, plain raw cabbage, and bland tomato chunks in three soft flour taco shells. Missing were the black beans and chipotle Mayo, plus no hot sauce. Raw white cabbage does not count as "slaw" just because it's shredded. Bland. As. F. Service was fast and courteous. We were kicked out because we smelt like pot I am a medical patient and it is legal in mass and we had no pot on us. Worst part It's a resturaunt and the security guard is chewing tabacco(gross). I've been around Worcester my whole life, always loved Funkys. Just one thing that rubbed me wrong tonight was not getting let in because of having joggers on. It's understandable as I run nightclubs in boston and dress codes matter. So I appreciate a local hub like Funkys upping there standards. What bothered me was both the door men said I could come in if I paid them $500. I normally will always tip security as well as my waitress or bartenders but for them not to accommodate someone because of joggers while 6-10 people walked out in jerseys, shorts, and joggers in the middle of July it was extremely disrespectful. Been in hospitality for 15 years, in Boston. Never in my life have I seen unprofessional security and management to let that happen. I don't come in to often but when I do I have a good time and run into home town friends. A word of advice don't treat people like the way I was. At the end of the day they are your guest. I spend money and always take care of my wait staff. I was wearing nothing different than the crowd in there and that's why I'm writing this. I wish nothing but the best for everyone there but y'all need to justify the mix of crowd in your area. You are on shrewsbury st Worcester. Not downtown boston. Good Food, Good specials. Good Drinks. Unfortunately, I tried to plan an event here and they were supposed to call me back and never did. I even came here in person and spoke to them. So The Compass it is. Anyway, they do have good food, but were not very organized or helpful with the event planning. Went here from word of mouth about the Thursday special, which is all you can eat steamers for $16.95. Clams were gritty, but served hot and taste wasn't bad. We figured, for that price they were a lower grade. The service was really great, and the wait for the clams was minimal. We did look at the menu, and it did seem interesting. Right as we walked in, a man interrupted our hostess to ask for mine and my friends IDs... whatever... little weird to have to be 21 to get a salad. After checking our IDs he told us we had to leave because he "thought" my friends was fake... or maybe she was 16 when the photo was taken and now we're both in our 20s??? Horrible experience. My niece, a beautiful young woman, went to Funky's for a fun night with her friends, and what started out as a great time ended in unadulterated viciousness! While having dinner and drinks, she got a phone call and had to go outside to take it (we all know how loud that place is). Upon trying to re-enter (there was a line), the bouncer wouldn't let her back in. She showed him the stamp on her hand and said that she had already been inside and the hateful/vicious/rotten bouncer told her, "YOU ARE SO UGLY, I WOULD'VE REMEMBERED YOU!" and wouldn't let her re-enter! People, the tongue is a muscle that wields the most damage. If Funky's can hire crap like that to work for them, then it's NOT a place any of us should go, let alone give them our hard-earned dollars. I implore you to think twice before going in, there are way too many other "hot spots" on Shrewsbury St. that employ decent human beings! There is absolutely no way we need to allow this behavior. Despite loving the fun name of this place, it's really just a run down pub. The food is usually sub-par. It smells like beer has soaked through the floor boards. After 10 minutes had passed by our friend and his wife were not allowed in because he had an essence of marijuana which is LEGAL in Massachusetts. We came here on a a weekend I FINALLY had off from the hospital I work at--I just wanted some good drinks, some Keno and relaxation. We arrived at 4pm and it was not busy whatsoever. Our initial server/bartender was OK, we waiting an average 5 minutes for drink refills. Then, apparently, shift changed sound 515-545 ish and it went downhill. We were seated up against the bar top so it was obvious when we would like a drink refill. The new servers could have cared less, as they chatted and laughed with each other. When we did get a refill (we are super pleasant) we said "thank you" and got a reply of "YUP" with an attitude. In real time as I wrote this my boyfriend is going on 7 MINUTES waiting on a beer refill. We'll try again some other time.....if we can't find another place. I had gone with my girlfriend on the the Red Sox opening day to the bad. I'll start off with the experience started off good. We had a few drinks. We had a female bartender, and she was great. She had asked us if we would be interested in ordering some food. So we had ordered a couple burgers. She had mentioned in 10 minutes they would be having 10 cent wings. We had decided to order 20 wings. Shortly after our order the "wings" came out. But to our surprise the were full sized drum sticks. Kinda did t want that much chicken! So we had a few and then our burgers had come out. The bartender had switched to a male bar tender who was kinda rude. We had ordered a couple more drinks and finished up the game. After we had received the bill, we had asked for a togo box for the remainder of the chicken to take home. He rudely "No way. We don't allow people to take the chicken home". We had informed him our original bartender never told us that and that we never saw anything about that. Plus we had ordered wings and not drum sticks. There was a lot of chicken left over. I said to him that the bar had falsely advertised wings and I had gotten drum sticks. If I had know. That I wouldn't have even placed the order. He still refused to let us take the chicken. Not only did they nail the order dead on, food was just as good as if we sat down there and ate. Lettuce wraps, baked haddock, shepherd's pie, Irish nachos, mini burgers all excellent. I went here once shortly after moving to worcester from metro-Detroit. The burger was great & it was nice to eat outside. So a friend came to visit from Michigan and I decided to return, we were turned away because my shirt didn't have sleeves on a 90°+ day. Haven't been back since. The owner seems to be quite a dick, I've heard a lot of other complaints about this place after living here for a while. The burger was good, but nothing that special.
