I'm a fan! Funky Door offers great classes-- and tons of them-- with a wide variety of talented, knowledgable and motivational teachers. The owners (Ry and Carl) are onsite every day and it shows. The studio is very clean and well run. Ry and Carl pay careful attention to all the details in a way I've never seen matched at any other yoga studio. Under their ownership they have created a real community of dedicated students, teachers and staff. Parking is easy. Pricing is reasonable. Well dang. I really really wanted to like this place. But it seems more smoke and mirrors than anything. The instructor for the class was very harsh literally clapping her hands to assert herself in repeating harshly each little part of the pose and even making a comment about not being able to sit down. Excuse me ? You don't know anything about my health and what I may need. I lasted 20 min before I decided I deserved better than subjecting myself to this. While everyone else seemed like sheep following her commands... this is anything but what hot yoga is supposed to be. There was no awareness of breath instead each part of the class was commanded. When I brought this to the attention of the front desk Becky was very nice and understanding which is a normal, heathy response one showing empathy and compassion. Ry on the other hand became very defensive, lacked understanding, and wouldn't allow a refund. Only later, under a constrained very false, forced smile she offered for me to try her class . I thought about this for a moment. And then I turned inward, what yoga is supposed to be about. My whole body was tight and uneasy. There is a lot of narcissistic tendencies here. As a therapist myself, I can say this place is not therapeutic at all but actually quite harming and triggering in how blind people are to it read more

Tried my first class here on the recommendation of my housemate. I've been a regular at CorePower, Yoga to the People and Equinox before, so I've tried a few different yoga classes. Entering the lobby is an assault on the senses. I realised throughout my class that Funky Door is an anagram of Funky Odor, which might be a more accurate name. The smell in the lobby is of feet (or sweat? feet sweat?) which is sort of understandable, given that it's a hot yoga class. This is different to my experience at the other studios, which are heated (but perhaps not to as high a temperature as Funky Door) but do not obviously smell. The lobby is colourfully decorated, and the front desk staff were helpful (although it was a bit chaotic, turning up at the end of one class and just prior to the next). The beginner's deal of just under $30 for your first month (unlimited classes, mat rental and towels) is a decent deal by any means but this quickly becomes expensive afterwards - going to $160. This is not far off the $189 "black tag" membership at CorePower. The main difference is that Funky Door feels significantly less nice - the facilities are less modern, smells worse, and the locker rooms are much more crowded. Once in the studio itself, it was HOT. I made the mistake of wearing a t-shirt, but having committed to wearing it, I was determined to keep it on throughout. This was probably a mistake, I definitely felt light headed multiple times throughout the class and had to sit out a few poses to try and regain my composure. It also smelled, but this was somehow even worse than the lobby. The smell of feet had evolved to a vaguely biological cheese smell. This, coupled with the intense humidity and heat was almost suffocating at first. It took a while to get used to it but WOW it was such a relief to leave the studio at the end of the class. I saw a sign that they were having a new heating system installed that day, so maybe this exacerbated the fresh air situation. Finally, I remain unconvinced about the bikram yoga itself. This was my first class of that style - the previous classes have all been vinyasa. I've found them to be more engaging since you're always moving and you rarely have a chance to stop and check your Fitbit. In this class (which was also 90 minutes, versus the usual 60), I found myself glancing at my wrist periodically (perhaps subconsciously awaiting the cool, fresh air outside). The men's changing rooms are pretty rudimentary - with just two showers and very little space (we were there for the 6:30pm class, so perhaps one of their busier sessions). Somehow all of the services underfoot were damp despite looking dry, which also a little disconcerting. All in all, I suspect I won't be returning beyond the first month, but I might give it another couple of goes to try and give it a fair shot :). read more

TL;DR GREAT INSTRUCTORS & GREAT HOURS I've been coming to Funky Door for two years, and I still love them! The instructors are awesome & the staff are friendly. They have such an awesome space! From my experience, the 6pm classes are always packed, so go at the odd hours if you want some more space. They have classes all throughout the day, so if your schedule allows, try to go the 8pm or early morning classes to avoid the crowd. The locker room, showers, and restrooms are impeccably clean. I think they probably clean them in between every class. The studio does have a slight smell if you go in immediately after a class has ended. The new (some original) owners are pure magic and every single instructor is wonderful - it's extremely difficult to enter/leave the studio without a smile. This place has changed a lot. Many of the changes are good ones, however I am disappointed the owner will not honor a package I purchased under the previous owner - that were said not to expire - I had called a year ago and she said she would honor the unused classes if I would purchase an equal amount of new classes. I used to teach hot Pilates at Hella Yoga in Berkeley and I really didn't think there would be another cool studio in the east bay to work at or work out at. I'm so lucky I found funky door! I'll be teaching there , but I have been going as a student the past two months. So I feel I can leave this review as a student and teacher. It has All the vibes. For Inferno hot Pilates and yoga and mixed tapes the sound system is amazing, the energy and lights are the same as Hella yoga (owners Jeff and Lynn did the lights and everything at Hella yoga they brought it over to funky door with Ry and Carl) The room is spacious and has new floors! As for Bikram , each teacher is so unique , knows their Bikram ,kind and really just good people. I've taken all their classes and I'd say try em all. They even have a yoga and mixed tapes, yep, music and Bikram! I can't express the love enough for everyone at funky door , so I had to come on here and share. Love The Funky Door! The place is joyous and welcoming, full of happy dogs and happy people of all shapes and sizes. After showing proof of vaccination and receiving a lock and key for a locker, things are safely stored while taking class with one of the friendly and encouraging teachers. My favorites: Yoga and Mixtapes with Ryan and Hot Pilates with Carl. Both are strong proponents of the "hot" yoga/Pilates' health benefits, keeping a close eye on each class-member to make sure that all feel included and can build their strength and ability. I was not a "yoga person" before I found The Funky Door, but this is yoga I can really live with! I loved this studio when I was living in the area. It's a great place. I've read some of the negative reviews, and the complaints are actually more about Bikram Yoga than about Funky Door specifically. Let's run through a few: (1) "It smells": All Bikram studios smell vaguely like normal perspiring human bodies. All. Of. Them. This place is very clean. If there is a little extra stink in the hot room sometimes, it's only because Berkeley has a lot of people who don't like to use deodorant. That's not something the management can control. (2) "I don't like that they tell new students not to leave the room": This is one of the foundations of Bikram Yoga and not a Funky Door thing. They will tell you this at any Bikram studio. (3) "90 minutes is too long": All true Bikram Yoga classes are 90 minutes. (4) "I don't like that they tell you to try to only drink water between postures": see number 3. In short, if you don't like Bikram Yoga, you won't like this place. But if you DO like Bikram Yoga, Funky Door has all 90-minute classes, good instructors, a nice front desk staff, nearby parking, convenient keyfob cards for check-in, cute/cheerful decor, and a nice, cozy locker room. read more

This is not yoga. There is no effort to help students get into the correct alignment, there is very little focus on breathing and flexibility, and the whole hot thing is quite silly and stinky. Note: just because you sweat doesn't mean you are exercising. Just because you are doing "poses" doesn't mean you are doing yoga. If you want to get a workout, go on a run or join a gym. If you want to sweat in close proximity to other sweaty people, go to Funky Door. read more

This place is under new ownership since Covid. Their yelp review says they still honor prepaid memberships from the previous owner. When I showed up to check in, the owner Jeff shook his head and told me they were no longer honoring memberships from before Covid. I informed him that I had been to classes earlier in 2022 and my prepaid classes were honored then, and that this new policy shift seemed rather sudden. It felt like he was shaking me down for money there on the spot in my yoga pants and tank top. He told me he would honor my old classes IF I bought new classes from him as well. Due to my work schedule, I can't take many classes at the times they offer. If I signed up for 10 prepaid classes (the smallest amount) I don't know if I could even use them all up in the 3 month window that the new ownership apparently sticks to diligently, never mind using up my previous prepaid classes. Bottom line: I just don't appreciate this sort of wheeling and dealing. If your yelp review says you accept previous prepaid memberships, and if the desk staff accepted previous prepaid classes a few months ago, don't patronize me by shaking your head as you check me in and giving me some cliche about how business means making a profit. I know all that; I'm just going by what your yelp review says and what your staff said a few months ago. The whole thing felt like a shakedown. "Your prepaid classes are no longer valid. I'll let you use one of your prepaid classes to get in today, and if you buy a new prepaid membership from us now, I'll let you use the rest of your old prepaid classes." That seems like a pretty arbitrary way to play with my membership. It was a good yoga class, but unfortunately the feeling of attempted shakedown still lingers. Namaste. read more

I've been to a few bikram/hot yoga studios around the bay area and this one always leaves me disappointed. I first came here in 2012 and was turned off by the incredibly pungent smell inside the studio. They have carpet which I always found odd considering how much sweat collects on the floor. It's probably the cause for the smell since none of the other hot yoga studios I've been to have the same problem. I've recently returned since my friend had special 30 days passes that are scattered around town hoping it would have improved. They now have humidifiers which are nice to keep the atmosphere moist and it smelling less but the temperature has gone dramatically down. I used to start sweating profusely within a minute of being in the studio but now I will go 10 minutes without breaking a sweat. The staff is also incredibly accommodating and friendly! They have mats, towels, and locks for rent which is nice so you don't have to hose down your own mats after class each time. The classes are all 1.5 hours long which is too long in my opinion. Some of the poses tend to drag on for a long time but the instruction is good and clear. None of the teachers add much guidance or individual help which is unfortunate unless you are a beginner. I would give it a try though if you are looking for a studio and see if it matches your needs. read more

I used to live in San Francisco and gone to Funky Door Yoga in San Francisco for many years. But after I got married and moved to Oakland. My life has been busy. When I am ready to get back to Bikram yoga again, I have researched all hot yoga near me but I still couldn't find the one I liked until I found out there is "FUNKY DOOR YOGA in BERKELY" But when I read the reviews it was kind of mixed the reviews, some like it and some don't. However, I told myself I should give it a try! I came to FUNKY DOOR YOGA in BERKELY today, got here 30 minutes earlier before the class begin. So I can get the idea of this place and get ready for the class. The person at the counter today was so nice, she gave me the warm welcome and explained me everything and told me about the awesome deal for the first timers here. Plus, all the tips about using all Studio Amenities. Only $29 for an entire month of first-time yoga, with free mats and towels, included. Isn't awesome? I would be sad if I didn't come and tried out this place myself. Seriously, this place is awesome! Friendly, clean, safe and easy to find street parking (in the afternoon) TIPS: For first timers! 1. Don't eat at least 1-2 hours before coming to the class. 2. Bring Big cold water with you 3. Wear comfortable clothes, like you are going to get some sun on the beach. 4. My partner and I arrived late. We wanted to inquire about the next class. When we approached the counter we said hello to one of two women at the desk. One woman met our kindness with kindness, the other was extremely rude and cut us off before we could ask our question. Here's how the encounter played out. Us: Hello! One of the ladies: Good morning! The rude woman: If he's new you can't go in. We're both well aware of the policies and were put off by this woman's comment. My girlfriend attended class the other day (using a free month certificate she got from one of the instructors) and this same woman was combative about her using it. I wanted to like this place. As my girlfriend is a regular, I looked forward to our mutual monday night yoga together. As I am more of a gym rat, I was excited to try out the hot yoga at Funky Door. as soon as I entered the room, I was ASTONISHED AT THE STINK. think middle school boys locker room mixed with a bad 24 hour fitness mixed with rotten cheese and old mildewed socks. BAD SMELL! I was committed to staying and getting past the odiferous bombardment....and I did,...I stayed the whole 90 minutes.... at the end we did an open mouth breathing excercise and I LITERRALLY TASTED OLD SOCKS! like seriously this place has a bacterial/mold infection.....not good for deep breathing nor relaxation.... I felt compelled to go directly to the front desk. I told the manager that the teacher was great and that I wanted to enjoy the class but that the "odor was overwhelming and not healthy" I went on to say " I think you must be loosing ~10% of would-be clients strictly based on the smell." she said, "yes I hear you, we actually get that complaint a lot..you should know we steam clean the wall-to-wall carpet weekly" "ya its not working, cant you diffuse lemongrass or something?" I've been going to Funky Door since they first opened in 2004or so- but didn't start really coming regularly since 2009. I'm a lot more flexible in the heat and that's what attracted me to hot yoga. First-the smell. It's hot yoga-people will sweat-it's kept really clean for a hot yoga place-really cleanest in the Bay Area. Second-staff. I've only had a good experience with the staff. The teachers have been really helpful, too. Hot yoga is really hard at first; keep up with it and it does get easier. I hope they reopen soon when it's safe. read more

This studio is for real. I applaud them for Sticking to the original Bikram methods all these years. The room is always hot enough; The teachers follow the rules; The students are mostly respectful of the rules (ie no water breaks until party time):) The room never stinks; They are Flexible when needed (ie I don't get chastized when I have to leave five mins early on occasion), or when I leave to go to the bathroom between poses; The humidity level is good. Hello everyone! I just finished 30 days of unlimited yoga. The studio is pretty clean. Bathrooms are spacious with plenty of lockers. I was pleasantly surprised by the blow dryers! However the carpet in the practice room smells a tad. The instructors were very knowledgeable. Everything about this studio is pretty awesome, except the customer service. I don't know about you but after an amazing work out the last thing I want is a bad taste in my mouth on the way out. The staff is pretty rude. About half way through trial I started looking up reviews to see if anyone else had the same experience. I started looking up other studios even though I enjoyed practicing here. It was based on how I felt after dealing with people at the front counter. I believe her name is Tanisha. She works on the weekends. She's the worst. I watched her attitude with other people so I know it wasn't just me. She would be smiling and as soon as I would walk up to the counter the smile would immediately (I kid you not) turn into a scowl. When picking up your ID or keys she would say nothing. She never said hello back, and never said goodbye. After multiple customer service issues, I ended up calling in a complaint. I let Matt know what was going on. I kid you not he laughed and said it wasn't the first time he's heard about this but that he would talk to her. I explained that I wanted to join the automatic membership but that my customer service issues needed to be addressed. The next time I go in to practice the manager comes up to me. The manager is less than friendly but not necessarily rude. She asks me about the membership. Keep in mind for an automatic membership you have to pay for the first and last month. She tells me that I can prepay for the membership which is roughly $300. Also keep in mind it wasn't her I was speaking with about the membership on the phone. It was Matt who I was giving my customer service complaint to. She had obviously spoken with him but she did not address my complaint. She just wanted me to pay for the membership. All I can say is it was weird. It made me feel uncomfortable like I wasn't being taken seriously. Typically after an hour and half workout you feel good walking out of your gym/studio.. not here. I've been to several classes and they have pretty good classes but I won't be returning. The odor in this place is horrendous. From reading other reviews, it sounds like it's a common trend that people are commenting on. It's one of those things that there are so many yoga studios in the area and I can't look past the smell. I hope the owner can fix this. The carpet should really be torn out, I'm afraid to see whats under it..... smells like bad mold. My BF and I parked in the back and we walked into the building and the staff was so rude and told us that we couldn't walk through the space and had to walk around the building. So strange. I get it if it's policy but they can at least say this is why so next time walk around. I will say, Lea the instructor was pretty inconsiderate during one of the classes I took. I had my yoga mat near the door (everyone wants to be near it since it's cooler) and she comes into the room and asked me to move my yoga mat. I didn't know why so I did but soon realized that she put her yoga mat and a colleagues in my spot - this is SUPER RUDE customer service. ESPECIALLY if they are instructors at the facility. Also multiple people noticed that she kept turning the heat up and I want to say it was higher than it is supposed to be. At one point it was close to 112-115... anyways her demeanor was the final straw, not coming back and if anyone asks me about this location, I will tell them my honest opinion. HOT. SWEATY. SWELTERING TEMPERATURES. Is this Hell?!? Nope, just your average class at Funky Door. I haven't frequented any of the other sites for this yoga studio, but the one in Berkeley isn't too bad. The staff is friendly, and the instructors are very patient and helpful, some are more encouraging than others. I prefered going to the later evening classes as they tended not to be as crowded. The after work/before work crowd is big and can make for a smelly and crowded experience. If looking at other people bending over and sweating onto your yoga mat isnt your cup of tea, then I don't recommend it. But if you are looking for a challenge and a way to become more limber, I say try the 30 days for $29 trial and see how you feel. It is great during the winter months when outdoor activities are limited by the elements. The Bikram craze has been great, but dont over do it you can stretch out your ligaments too much and gain an overuse injury. read more

This place is where it's at!!!!! Ry, Jeff, Lynn, Andrea, Celeste...everyone who works here is a joy and they KNOW what they are doing. I love this studio because not only are the teachers kind and real, so are the clientele that go there. I've been going for about 2 months, and so many students have made me feel welcomed and like I belong. At first, you may think, "but the postures are the same EVERY DAMN TIME" (they've got hot pilates twice a week to shake it up!) or "it's too hot", or "I'm getting bored" BUT PLEASE TRUST ME, if done with regularity this style of yoga will change your life. I've learned I'm strong, that I can trust myself, and that the discomfort you breathe through in the practice just prepares you for all those uncomfortable life moments. It would be hard to describe how bad this place smells. Carpet. Carpet in a studio that is enclosed, where people sweat and place their feet down, class after class, week after week, month after month. It smells like old, sour, matted dogs. And you don't smell it in the front, only once you've paid and get inside the studio. read more

I visited recently while in town for the holidays. I went for a drop-in class on a weekday afternoon. Check in was smooth and the teacher (Linnea) greeted me and was very friendly. You are given a lock/key for a locker and some electrolytes (!!!) before being shown to the locker room. The changing room is large and comfortable. Everyone was friendly. The studio is very large. Warning - it stinks. I've been to multiple hot yoga studios, and this one takes the cake. Even before class started, the odor of unwashed dog, corn chips, and feet was overpowering. But, hey, it's good for you. I set up in the back and got ready for class. People keep to themselves here, likely since it's such a big studio. The teacher had a platform (helpful) and microphone/headset (also helpful, though somewhat distracting). My favorite thing is the little drawings above the front mirror. They let you know what the pose should look like and what's coming up in a fun and quirky way. This studio is HOT. I've never had to leave the room before, but after about 30 minutes, I started to feel nauseous and dizzy. I know better than to stick around (if leaving is embarrassing, fainting is ten times worse) and I stepped out for 5-10 minutes. The front desk staff and teacher were very sweet - Linnea put my water outside the door for me and was super non-judgey. I felt somewhat vindicated after I came back and two women left - taking their mats with them. The windows and doors were opened periodically, which was reassuring. I made it through the floor series and felt exhausted but amazing at the end. I would recommend this studio to intermediate/advanced Bikram practitioners or those who enjoy the convenience and anonymity of a large studio. I would go back, but it wasn't my favorite. read more

I have gone to this yoga studio for a few months and like most aspects of it. The room is large and clean, and checking in is fast and easy. The staff is very friendly, and the instructors always available to talk. You can sign up for mats and towels, which makes things a lot easier. The actual class is standard bikram yoga, although the instructor I usually go to, the french one, has dumped much of bikram's dialog that talks about health benefits that are demonstrably nonscientific gibberish, so I am happy about that. My thyroid and pancreas are fine without being squeezed. She is also the strictest one and makes people do the postures for the longest time, and without any props. I had a towel under my chin once and she told me I couldn't use my "little pillow". The negative points: I think that the room has a pungent odor, maybe mildew in the carpet. I prefer the hard flooring that is easier to clean and keep dry. I also have concerns about the heat and the ecological and environmental consequences of heating a room THAT hot when any real benefits of it are psychological. Id prefer it if it were 90 or so, which would be plenty comfortable for those that enjoy the heat without the wasted energy. I watch the dryers in the back room drying the laundry constantly and venting the hot, humid air out of the building and do not understand why it is not redirected into the studio to save energy. I would also lower the ceilings in the studio so there is a smaller volume of air to heat and so that the hot air doesnt end up 2 meters above people's heads. read more

Ok, I like this studio. The staff is kind and they have a great community of people. It's my first try in to Bikram yoga. I can tolerate the heat. I can live with the fact that it's 90 minutes. I can do (or attempt) the yoga poses. But I've tried it for less than a month and I won't continue. I can't handle the smell. Why carpet a Bikram Yoga studio? The smell is overpowering - like George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic level funk for the first 20-30 minutes until you go nose-blind. It's like the sweaty locker room smell amplified by 1000x. It's so distracting. I'm also left with the disquieting thought that they're not rolling through with a carpet cleaner in the 15 minute break between sessions. Even with the yoga mats and towels provided, I am essentially exercising in the remaining putrid sweat of others. I'm prone to skin issues and I'd hate to contract something or put other students at risk because of unhygienic carpet. Another practice I question is allowing late students to join a class. Classes are pretty packed in the evening. Late student comes in and jams himself in front of me. I spend the next 75 minutes with some dude's hot sweaty musty ass dangerously close to my face. It was disgusting and could have been prevented by not allowing late students to join sessions. It's a great studio and I want to say I love it - but the carpet really needs to be switched and late students not allowed in to classes. read more

Funky Door is back and better than ever! The carpet is gone, replaced with pressed rubber flooring that is really clean and supportive of poses off the mat. The room is large and airy, with plenty of natural light and doors and windows the teachers open when it gets a bit toasty. But it isn't super-hot usually. There are parts of the room that are hotter than others but on the whole, it is much more reasonable and comfortable and allows you to focus on yoga, not heat. And I love the 60 minute Bikram option MWF at noon and the hot pilates on the weekends and now starting a couple of days at 5:00 pm. They also have yoga and mixtapes and Beats, with the Bikram series set to music and limited narration. It's really one of the best, most authentic studios around and the new management, Ry, Lynn and Jeff, are doing an incredible job renewing a classic. Thank you Funky Door! read more
