This yoga/Pilates studio is so fun! I love the high-energy instructors, the creatively curated space, the heat, and the excellent music. The studio is also well ventilated, which is a huge plus for me. The women's bathroom smells amazing and includes lockers, showers, and a makeup area, which makes the whole experience feel extra thoughtful and comfortable. I've been practicing here (yoga and pilates) for four weeks and really enjoy it. Ry is an exceptional human being, with deep empathy and perception. She holds the room to a standard of excellence and also makes space for the experience of a beginner. If you are new to the studio, I echo the advice on the website, to eat lightly beforehand and hydrate afterwards. Funky Door has great teachers, total consistency with classes starting in time, comfy changing room (and great soap in the showers, BTW), fun atmosphere, friendly staff, convenient lockers and locks, and they just have all the thinks figured out! It's a sanctuary from the rest of the world, in my opinion, and a great place to have a healthy practice. read more

Great studio! Classes can get really full so I recommend coming early. One of the only or maybe only hot yoga studios in Berkeley I could find. I do wish they had a few more class options though. They offer Bikram/Hot Pilates everyday and I would love to see more hot yoga vinyasa flow classes. They have yin yoga and yoga with a twist but these classes aren't offered everyday. I love hot flowy classes so would love to see this in the future. I take the hot Pilates class often and it is a fun class but it's not yoga. read more

This review is long overdue. I started going to Funky Door Berkeley in November 2024 on the 1-month Early Morning Yoga and Hot Pilates Classes Groupon and have been going / addicted ever since. It is a wonderful place to experience Bikram Yoga and I absolutely love love love the Hot Pilates classes. Oh, and I can't leave out Yin - if you know you know! The overall experience is pleasant: from the welcoming front desk staff, the enthusiastic instructors, the spacious front room, to the club like environment in the back room, to the cleanliness in the women's locker room, Funky Door Berkeley is just a phenomenal time! Good classes and no judgement-- everyone is welcome here! I'm always more motivated to move if I can do it to music (as opposed to classes where music is just in the background), and the piltes classes here + the ocssional "yoga & mixtapes" class here is the best I've been able to find -- although I do wish there was even more of a "move to the beat" aspect -- some of the pilates classes have a disjointed selection of music with really varied bpms or too fast bpms that make it impossible to move to the rhythm of the music. But I find I'm pretty alone in this particular quirk -- it's not something anybody else really seems to mind ! I do prefer the classes in the dark with the cool lights and the music because, vibes--but the regular yoga classes in the silence and the daylight here are quite good too. read more

This is how I train for trail running, elevation and heat adaptation, and functional strength. It's the best gym I could ever ask for. I started coming to Funky Door in June to complete my practice hours for my bikram yoga training. Zoe welcomed me with open arms! Her friendly and welcoming attitude definitely made my first day at the studio a great time. After coming here for a few months now I've noticed that the yoga and pilates instructors support each other by taking each other's classes. There is a big support system within the instructors at the studio which makes the students experience even better. The community of students at the studio is also amazing. Everyone is such a vibe! If you want a pilates/yoga studio that means BUSINESS then funky door studio is perfect for you. i've been coming to the Berkeley location for a few years now I want to say since 2022 and this is the most consistent studio that I've found in the East Bay Area. Recently, I was trying to weigh out my options to see if I should come back or try another studio, but what will always bring me back is the consistency, the variation of classes, multiple classes a day, early morning and late evenings for those with a busy schedule, such as myself. I can only think of maybe one other studio in the East Bay area before San Francisco that offers hot Pilates, which was very important to me. Not many places offer hot Pilates every single day at least. every single instructor here is very kind and encouraging so are the students in the class as well. It's a great community. Overall the front staff is always amazing, so are the instructors.. I give this place a 10 out of 10. The only thing I wish I could change would be the three month notice to end your membership, but that's about it. read more

Bottom line: Funky Door feels unsanitary/dirty, and management can be rude. The silver lining is the great teachers. If you've practiced Bikram anywhere else, Funky Door as a studio is going to be disappointing. I debated writing this review but felt that my experience has been so negative and so different from other yoga studios that it seemed important to share. When I moved to Berkeley, I picked my apartment building to be close to Funky Door because I was so excited to join the community. Over the course of two years, Funky Door management took that excitement and turned it into me feeling unwelcome and unsafe. I have been practicing regularly (1-2 times per week) at Funky Door Berkeley for two years. I've practiced Bikram for almost 20 years and have been a regular student and/or a work-study at 6 different studios in that time, so I have a good basis for comparing experiences. I'll start by saying that most of the teachers at Funky Door are wonderful - particularly Estevan, Ish, Alison, Trey, Lisa, and Chris - and many of the students are kind. That is where the positives end. Most studios that originated as Bikram are peaceful, quiet, and meditative. Funky Door constantly plays loud music (pop, rock, lots of high tempo/lyrics, last time it was Dua Lipa) in the lobby and I can often hear it inside the hot room, especially because the teachers open the windows right into...you guessed it...the lobby. You also hear dogs barking during almost every afternoon class. They also allow those dogs (I've seen at least 7 different dogs over 2 years) to hang out for hours in the studio, and I have seen them get into the hot room on multiple occasions (picture attached) - including once where I opened my eyes from final savasana to see a dog licking my water bottle. They run around on the carpet and in the locker rooms where we are required (and I mean required) to walk barefoot. It makes the whole studio feel unsanitary to me. I've never been in another studio where I actively worried about having bare feet (which we then touch with our hands during the practice....). I've tried to wear my indoor flip flops in the hallway and the women's locker room where the dogs spend all their time and have been aggressively scolded by Lynn and Ry. On that note, the toughest part for me is the management. Lynn and Ry instantly became rude and combative with me when their front-desk staff made a mistake with a credit card charge (not the first time either - they also charged me in once for someone else's water/mat purchase and I let it go because I figured, hey, mistakes happen). All I did was call the studio to ask for clarification about a second unexpected charge that I received from Funky Door, and I suddenly found myself on the phone with Lynn, who all but explicitly said that I'm a liar. The staff member who had made the original mistake that resulted in the charge lied to Lynn and Ry to cover up her mistake, although she later apologized to me in private. Lynn and Ry seem aggressive and dismissive of students' emotional safety, and never acknowledged their part in the issue to me in person, even though I saw both of them at least twice after the incident. I tried to go back for a few weeks and was so uncomfortable that I won't ever visit Funky Door again. All that to say, some of the teachers are great, but this is the worst Bikram studio I've attended in the last twenty years. read more

A daily dose of the hot room is essential to my training! A year and a half in, the great instructors and studio are helping me turn a big ship. I've been (slowly but surely) up-leveling my strength and wellness. Regular bikram and hot pilates have helped me get stronger, more flexible and train for the hardest days on my bike. June 2025 will be my 10th (and final) AIDS Lifecycle riding 545 miles from SF to LA and my FD practice is as key to endurance cycling as time in the saddle. I've been going to Funky Door 4-6 times per week for almost a year now and I'm looking forward to continuing for many more years! All of the teachers are truly great. The management does an amazing job of training newer teachers and giving them the opportunity to perfect their teaching. Every employee is very friendly and welcoming, unlike many other workout studios I've tried. I also find that the membership is very affordable compared to other studios. I have no complaints! Only tips: arrive early if you need to find parking as it's a busy area; make sure you hydrate before, during, and after class; and prepare to get sweaty - I normally use their showers at least for a quick rinse after class so I don't get my car sweaty! read more
