The essence of yoga is felt immediately upon entering the WARM (that's right - took 2 layers off-yay) room at 6:40a for Mysore on Friday. By "essence", I mean - there is no front desk staff (no front desk at all) - simply take off shoes, put down your mat, write your name on a small piece of paper (no questionnaire, no legalese, nothing to read or sign), stow your stuff on a hanging hook (or put on bench), put your payment down on the small piece of paper (no one collects money or asks you about money - crazy!) and start your practice within 2 min of walking into the room. There is NO talking. When I arrived, I was the 7th person in the room (and the teacher, Ayelet, was doing her own practice). Thanks to Yelp, I knew Ayelet would be busy with her own practice till 7:30a, so I did my own thing (sun salutes, warrior 1 & 2, triangle, awkward, parsvo, half moon, twisting half moon). Other students trickled in after me. Highest number of students in the room around 10. Observations of other students are as follows: 1. they all looked strong & in good shape - I had the most body fat in the room; 2. they were all focused on their own practice - competitive vibe absent; 3. they were all doing their own practice - same sequence, but starting at different times and working on different things - I saw a guy in his 60's do sleeping yogi pose. Ayelet finished her practice then began correcting & adjusting students. Eventually, she walked over to me, very quietly introduced herself and spoke briefly about Sri K. Pattabhi Jois- whose picture is against the wall, his 6 series, etc. She stated that initially, repetition is more important than form - learning the sequence of poses is key for beginners. She didn't ask, but I told her about my issues and how I needed to modify some poses (like standing with my feet apart for Tadasana). She was cool with it. There was a couple who came in after me - the woman was clearly a longtime practitioner and the guy was a beginner with some yoga experience (like me), so Ayelet taught the two of us together. There was a 3rd beginner (a young woman) but she dropped out after learning the first set (Surya Namaskar A & B). We learned some fundamental positions (2 more sets). After each set, Ayelet asked me if I wanted to stop or keep going. She gave me excellent adjustments. At the end of the 3rd set, she taught us the finishing sequence and then we did savasana. Biggest challenge: Breathing. I began by standing and breathing. Ayelet listened to me and then asked me to make the inhale and exhale sound exactly the same. she also put her hand on my back so I could become accustomed to inhaling into my back and also my side ribs and maintaining a straight spine while exhaling (and pulling my abdomen in while keeping air in my back and side ribs). 2nd biggest challenge: Repetition. Ayelet will go through a set (say pulling on toes (Padangustasana) & stepping on hands (Pada Hastasana), then triangle, then reverse triangle) 2 times with me and then say, do this 5-6 more times. Seemed like I ended up doing some sets 10-12 times while waiting for her to come over (she gives each student individual attention). I was TEMPTED to do my own thing (do other poses) BUT felt like it would be disrespectful to do so. Ayelet has a direct, brisk manner and is watchful. From her today, I learned I needed to watch my arm to make sure it was directly over my shoulder in extended side angle pose (Utthita Parsvakonasana). Also need to keep my floating ribs in during Trikonasana. Overall, I had a very positive first experience with Mysore at Berkeley Yoga Center. In order to do Mysore, Ayelet's requirement is minimum 3x per week attendance in order to learn the sequence. Otherwise, she suggested doing classes. I will say this, after my Mysore session ended at 8:55a, I felt the need to do a complete yoga class (more than 10 poses), so went to a 90 min anusara class. There is a kitchen and another room (presumably bathroom?) in the studio. Floor is clean. Punch in *9642 in the keypad beside the street gate, climb up 3 flights of stairs to studio C. Parking: easy at 6:35a. First Friday street cleaning on the studio side of Bonar.

I general, I like Green Yogi and have gone to several yoga classes here over the years. The…read moreinstructors have been lovely and over-all very positive experience with the studio and the classes I have taken. However, I would strongly advise AGAINST attending their T-groups. I will explain why: These are not lead by licenses therapists, however are intended for interpersonal problems to insure. That feels problematic in itself. Additionally, because the facilitators are not licenses therapists, there are no ethical code they legally need to abide by. What became worse was when it was revealed that the facilitator, Nasiem, turned out to be roommates and friends with one of the participants in the group. So, when there became an interpersonal issue between me and her friend/rommate, Nasiem was not a neutral party. I did reach out to Nasiem to discuss my concerns and she had the opportunity to respond to me but but I never head back from her. Because of this, I did not return to group. I feel comfortable calling out this situation and this facilitator in particular because I gave her the opportunity to connect with me and for whatever reason she did not. Would highly advise against the T-groups. Please reach out to me if you would like more information on my experience. I am happy to share.

Let the heat and constant movement of your body during the hot pilates, bikram or buti, lower your anxiety and release the fury here! I like the new take on disco colors inside with R rated music! It gets me to be how I want to be, let loose, and leave all the problems that goes on outside of my yoga mat! It's like I'll deal with it later, but first, yoga for my soul please! Hot, move, sweat and repeat! Listen to pump up music and get your workout going! Let's get it working! Yes! ...And instead of namaste, they end with thank you! Epiphany from Hella - If your mind keeps moving, treat your body just as well and let it keep pace to your mind. Balance is key. Thank you!

Located close to Bart, UC Berkeley, you can easily get here using public transportation. The instructors keep the class motivated while challenging us. I always leave feeling better than I showed up because I know I got a great workout. Today's class was 90's themed and they always have a bumpin' playlist. It was easy to squat and hit each rep with the beat. Make sure to show up 15 minutes early to check in, grab a cubby, set up your mat and towel, and grab the appropriate weights and bands. I bring a fitness mat, a hand towel, water, and a hot yoga/Pilates towel made of microfiber. It's perfect for the heated room because trust me you will SWEAT. They don't offer wipes to clean your mat after, only for their weights. I like the studio, lots of disco lights and music. They keep the studio dark, so I always feel comfortable, no one is looking at you. It's a judge free zone! I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a challenging

I attended Jessica's classes every Sunday for over 2 years (I waited over 6 months to obtain a coveted Sunday spot). I've been a nurse for over 30 years and suffered from chronic neck, shoulder and mid back pain. Jessica helped me to keep my mid spine open using the ROPES and my chronic pain is much less intense. ANA TOOK OVER IN JULY 2019. She studied under Jessica for 9 years and completed many IYENGAR yoga workshops! Ana adds more standing poses to open the spine along with restorative yoga. ANA'S SIDE OPENINGS HAVE BEEN THE MOST HELPFUL TO ME SINCE JULY 2019. Also, the flow from pose to pose of Ana's class is very relaxing. I highly recommend ANA FRENES AT THE TREE OF LIFE YOGA STUDIO!!!

Jess is a wonderful teacher and she really takes time to know her students/clients. She also goes around the room and modifies poses depending on how advanced of a student you are. I started off with the Beginner Series, which was a great intro to yoga. I've tried all the scheduled classes and my favorites are the rope, Iyengar and vinyasa. TIPS - parking across the street in a lot (look for the yellow Tree of Life Yoga Clients signs) - buzz to be let into the building; studio is all the way to the back and up the gray wooden stairs - get the 10 class pass for $140...worth it! Each class is 1.5 hours and there's usually no more than 8-10 per class. I've been in some classes where there were under 5 people - if you want to get in a rope class, reserve a month in advance (seriously) If you're even thinking about trying this place, DO IT. I promise you won't regret it!

With classes running every hour, each day targeting different muscle groups or training styles, I never have to overthink my workout routine--I just show up, 4 to 6 days a week, and let the rhythm carry me. These hybrid Pilates classes are reformer-inspired but go beyond the traditional format, incorporating cardio and conditioning in a way that feels both efficient and empowering. The programming is smart, the flow is intentional, and the results are real--I feel stronger, more grounded, and I've been sleeping better than I have in months. Now for the real shoutout: Vanessa, or V Dog as she's listed on the schedule, is a force of nature. Her classes are masterfully led, with a level of attention to detail that makes you feel seen, supported, and challenged. She's clearly experienced and deeply knowledgeable--not just about movement, but about how to guide a room full of diverse bodies through safe, effective, and transformative exercise. Vanessa always cues spring settings before each move, offers modifications to scale up or down, and walks the room to ensure everyone's form is on point. Her safety reminders aren't just helpful--they're part of a larger ethic of care. She teaches with precision, but also with warmth and humor, making even the toughest sequences feel like communal choreography. Yes, the classes move fast. Yes, you'll sweat. But you'll also leave feeling like you've earned something. The energy is high, the community is focused, and the instructors--especially Vanessa--treat every class like a ceremony of strength. BodyRok Berkeley isn't just a workout studio--it's a rhythm I've folded into my week, a place where movement becomes medicine, and where instructors like V Dog turn technique into testimony.
