With the onset of the pandemic, Mountain Yoga was the bright side of such crazy times. I started doing classes onine with the studio and have revived my yoga practice becasue of it. I take 4-5 classes per week at Mountian Yoga. The teachers are very experienced. My favorite is Dr. Baxter Bell as I have arthritis and Baxter has the perfect active but safe practice for me. Baxter also incorporates mudras and pranayama into the practice. I went to Mexico with Baxter last year and had a blast! I also do the sound meditation with Ann, the owner of the studio. It is a perfect meditation for me as it incorporates breath and chanting. The community is lovely with great people. There are many special events, too. Namaste to Mountain Yoga! read more

Mountain Yoga is my go to yoga studio. The instructors are all superb. MY provides a nice variety of classes. I have enjoyed the workshops that provide a deep dive into a specific pose. This is a very small studio with great teachers and i am glad to have great yoga in my neighborhood. Doing some research i found out that Mountain Yoga has some of the best teachers in the Bay area: Baxter Bell and Richard Rosen. i've been to Bethany's class on Saturdays, it can get busy, however is the perfect way to start your weekend, she has bright energy and is always paying attention to each individual and their practice.. I also enjoy Sara & Anya's classes, Anja would give you plenty of choices for your practice depending on how you feel or what are you capable of. My favorite class is wednesday night with Richard Rosen, the attention to detail that he gives to each asana is what i look for on my yoga practice, more than a work out. He is indeed a great asset to the Studio. . read more

I tried the one month special and was able to make it to a few classes. I enjoyed my classes with Ann a lot!!! She's a great instructor and provided really good specific tips about how poses should feel and small ways to change your form. She also did a good job giving me physical support and adjustments to my form as she walked around. She seems to change up the poses in her sessions, so it was a good opportunity to learn new things from someone so knowledgable and eloquent about yoga. Everyone is very friendly and its awesome they provide all the materials you need, including a mat. However, after trying this studio out, I will be returning to my old studio because I want to get back to doing hot yoga. This place is great for all levels, however I prefer a more rigorous work out through my practice (and not everyone does! so this place could be the right fit for you). I will also note I went to a Friday morning session and it was a bit chatty (as prompted by the instructor). Those in the class mentioned it was a tight nit community and I think they appreciated it, however I prefer more silence and serene yoga so I can get into a flow. read more

Love Anja's Gentle Flow and Restorative classes! I took a two week leave of absence from my job due to chronic hip pain that just kept getting more and more severe. During those two weeks I attended Anja's classes without fail. All are mid-day and the majority of the other yogis are over 65. Which, i think, just shows how attuned Anja is to each yogi's medical issues and how well she assists the individual in adapting the post to meet their needs. I found her suggestions nothing but helpful. Sara worked the desk while I was there and was very helpful and welcoming. After two weeks of almost daily gentle and restorative yoga, i returned to work virtually pain free and in much better spirits. read more

Our daughter and her husband have been going here for a number of months, and have been raving about it. During our recent visit to Oakland, they were more than happy to treat us to a session of 'mindful yoga.' It is easy to see why they love this place! On the Sunday that we went the class was being led by Domonick Wegesin - He greeted us warmly, and then asked each of us about any needs or concerns - physical or other - that we might have, and he addressed each individually. As a newcomer to yoga, I never felt that I was going to be asked to do anything to overstretch (and possibly injure) myself - and never was made to feel less for it. The studio was peaceful and comfortable, with a very pleasant Peruvian music drifting through the windows from the live performers across the street. As a bonus, the farmer's market was just wrapping up as we got out, so we got to enjoy fresh fruit after the wonderful session. If we lived in the Bay Area, I would gladly become a regular here! read more

I love this studio, there are so many wonderful instructors. I appreciate Ann Dyer's expertise and Mindi Marcus' teaching styles. Mindi's classes are more vigorous flows, I get a bit of exercise out of it. There are lots of Hatha style classes, I enjoy the stretching and the meditative state I get out of those classes. read more

I still remember when I first heard that Mountain Yoga opening, about seven years or more ago: I was so excited to find a yoga studio in my neighborhood, I was vibrating. And the years were rewarding: classes that started as early as 7:30 am and were available as late as 7:30 at night in a serene, window-lined studio; an interesting group of teachers to choose from, and a parking lot five minutes walk away. Situated in the heart of Montclair Village at the foot of the central hills, Mountain Yoga afforded me options for after-class tea and coffee. It felt like such a community asset, and I was a major booster of the studio. Then ownership changed, and I fell away from regular attendance. My regular favorite teachers moved on, my fitness focus changed ... who knows what happened. But recently, I returned to Mountain Yoga, and I still think this studio is a major asset to the Montclair community. The new owner has imprinted the studio with her own style while maintaining its serenity. I opened my mind to a new favorite teacher, and noticed that many of the same faces surround me in class. Others see an asset, as well. I recommend checking out Mountain Yoga. There are classes for beginners, classes for seasoned yogis, and massage options I've yet to check out. There is more public parking than people acknowledged in prior posts: you can prepay for up to 2 hours, and if you're in a 7:30 class, that's getting 3 hours out of the meter. Pass your meter script on if you get out before the time expires. Or use the parking lot. It isn't nearly as far as you'd think. read more

This is a very small studio in the Montclair section of Oakland. I came here for an Intro to Yoga 4-week workshop with Raven, whom I think is the best yoga instructor ever (or at least way better than the other 4 yoga instructors I've experienced). The format was great, a gentle introduction to all of the basics, explaining things and allowing time for questions. Raven is very supportive, encouraging, instructive, knowledgeable. I came back to this studio for one of her regular classes, which was also great -- it was a small class with very varied levels, and she was able to handle the differing levels pretty well. The studio itself is a bit difficult. First, Antioch Ct is a winding street that seems to be in different places, so the studio is hard to find the first time. I'd focus on finding a parking space in Montclair and then walking. When you enter the front door, you're not positive you're in the right place and have to go upstairs. Then, when I walked into the place, it was very overwhelming -- a tiny entry space filled with people, and seemingly no one in charge. There is a tiny room to the left where you put your shoes and coat and things, but there is a small doorway and it's hard to get in and out when it's busy. There is a computer at the counter so you can sign in, but someone needs to show you what to do your first time. There doesn't appear to be a bathroom; you have to ask for (or take) the key and then go out of the room to the hallway. The studio space itself is quite small, so even a medium-sized class would be cramped. You can't really bring stuff in with you; there's a small shelf for your wallet or any small thing you don't want to leave in the other room. Raven was nice and always made sure to watch the door and then lock it when everyone had arrived. The studio does have a nice intimate feel, you can feel cozy in the little studio. read more

I recently had a wonderful massage here, courtesy of a Living Social deal. I told the therapist about my specific issues - bad arthritis in my knees, ankles and hands, and he spent a lot of time doing stretches and focusing on my problem areas. It was probably one of the best massages//body work sessions I have ever had. The studio is nice and serene with a side sitting room and a large room for classes. A peaceful setting, but a little marred by the street sounds outside. Next time I'll probably ask the therapist to turn up the soothing music a bit, which should cut out the street sounds. This is a small studio in a nice sunny location. Many of Oakland's best-known, best-loved yoga teachers have classes here, including several from Piedmont Yoga, so it's a great way to get instruction from them in a more intimate environment. That said, this is a great beginners' place, too with a lot of personal attention. (That's a good thing! Don't be shy!) I took my first classes from the Studio Director, Ann Dyer, and I never felt embarrassed or uncomfortable, though I had ample opportunity. Ann also has a unique vision for moving the studio beyond just classes and into the art & culture of yoga generally. Definitely check out their calendar for all the events and workshops they bring in. On a practical basis, you should plan to arrive and leave in your class clothes. There is not a lot of space for changing. Mountain Yoga also offers massage, ayurveda and acupuncture. read more

Did not love this place. When you are paying $16 for a yoga class it kinda sucks having to drive around the neighborhood a bunch of times and then pay a whopping $4 on top of the yoga class for parking as there is only one tiny street withing a half mile of the studio with free parking, which of course is always full of cars. The classes are self check in style with a computer, which is hard to figure out the first few times you go to class. The classes I went to were average. The studio entry is nice with a small common area in front. Bathrooms are in the hall and you need to get a key (also weird when it is your first time and you have to ask all of this). The class and front room are separated by a curtain so any people talking outside of the class can be heard. Classes are all held in the same tiny room. I did like how the yoga room was bright and had lots of natural light. Also loved their hardwood floors. With parking expect to pay about $15-$20 per class. There are many studios around and I would say this one is all around average. read more

I feel great! Ann Dyer's yoga class was like a full body massage. Never too difficult, just long slow gentle stretches with intuitive explanation of what needs to go where. Not once did I think, "Gawd when will this end?" but rather, "I hope this goes on forever". I am totally hooked! read more

This is a great studio! Very clean, great equipment and the instructors are fantastic. Bethany's class (Tues and Thurs night) is a really good workout - for all levels. There is always a mixture of expertise in the classes, and she is very helpful to the advanced and beginners! Anja is a little more gentle but again offers a lot of help and is very flexible with routines in order to appeal to all levels. I highly recommend taking Lynn Ursic's Hatha 1-3 and Yoga for Strength Conditioning. Lynn is a passionate yogi which is reflective in the focus, clarity of instruction and care that she brings to each class. The environment that's created allows me to drop deeply into my practice. I really enjoyed my early morning class with Antonia today and intend to make it a regular habit. She's not only knowledgeable about how to practice yogasanas safely and at a variety of levels, but she also has knowledge of ayurveda that she brings to the class from time to time. She knows real yoga is not about showing off, but rather about the micromovements inside each person's unique structure. The class was fun and engaging while still being focused, rigorous but simple. The practice space is warm but not overly heated, clean and bright but still cozy. The fresh morning air we let in halfway through the class was divine! I was also really glad there was not incense burning during class as that makes it hard for me to take in prana properly - really fine quality incense is expensive to purchase and not frequently used, in my experience. Mountain Yoga is a friendly community yoga studio. I have been a student of Lynn Ursic's for two years and I wanted to make sure others know how amazing she is. In the past two years I have seen my body become much stronger. When I started my knees were hurting but after a couple of months, the pain started to go away due to the strength building in my thighs. Another surprising thing is that my shoulders and neck are back instead of forward now and when I see a reflection of myself I'm surprised at how much different I look. Lynn has a solid knowledge of the body and focuses on proper alignment in the postures and how to do them safely. She incorporates mental and spiritual work into the practice as well. Everyday, I have a sense of center and calm that has grown out of my practice with Lynn. read more

I am loving Lynn Ursic's classes at this studio. Lynn is great at explaining the anatomical science behind the moves and emphasizing the process as opposed to just achieving the positions. Her focus on strengthening and alignment has made a real difference in my posture. She is helpful at addressing whatever your personal health issues are (for me it's a bad shoulder) in a gentle yet challenging way. read more

I here the have a restorative class that I would like to try next. Definitely going back when I'm on the east bay. Mountain Yoga was taken over a few years ago by yoga teacher and vocal artistAnn Dyer. The space was always sweet: light, bright and airy and they had some wonderful teachers, but Ann added other dimensions, transforming it into a kind of yoga arts center with guest teachers and inspirational artists visiting on a regular basis. Ann herself is a renowned jazz vocalist who spent the last ten years immersed in studying the yoga of sound. She's a terrific teacher of yoga asana (the traditional postures of yoga) and chanting. I have been fortunate enough to participate in her recent performances as part of the Vak Choir at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Asian Art Museum. Ann is a senior level instructor who also teaches in the teacher-training program at the Piedmont Yoga Studio. Other instructors from that faculty who teach at Mountain Yoga include Baxter Bell M.D. and the yoga scholar Richard Rosen (both excellent teachers). M-Yoga offers a 4-week intro series on Monday evenings for beginners. Anja Borgstrom, Sara Kenward and Mary Pafford all teach a gentle style of yoga. Lilia Roman teaches a wonderful, balanced practice that includes aspects of the 'Urban Zen' approach. For those looking for a more active, rigorous practice, Katie Knox and Bethany Hobbs are terrific. My favorite recent addition to the M-Yoga schedule has been the 7:45-8:45 am Vinyasa flow class with Elyse Hochstadt. I find the early morning hour flow is the best way to start my day: it helps me align breath and body, focus my mind and move the energy fluidly through my body. First off: I am not someone who settles. When something doesn't work... I move on! That being said, I've attended numerous yoga studios and met numerous yoga teachers over the past decade or so, and I have finally found my match at Mountain Yoga. I initially took classes with Antonia Fokken (super lovely), but when she moved on, I fell in love with the woman taking over her classes - Bethany Hobbs! I think yoga teachers are as different as yoga students, so what works for me may not work for you, but I have never enjoyed yoga as much as I have during a class with Bethany. Her classes always have a bit of a theme, as well as time to "center" in the beginning, then movement and breath, breath, breath, and of course, relaxing time at the end. I always feel challenged in her class, but never pressured, regardless of the kind of day my body is having (because some days I can do tree pose, and some days I really just can't!). People can get hurt pushing themselves during yoga, and Bethany makes an effort to give options for poses (for different experience levels and for people with injuries) and reminds us to take breaks as needed (and she truly means it!). I've had teachers who've told me to listen to my body during class, but then encouraged me to push a pose beyond my limit (and then gave me a look when I took a child's pose instead). Bethany is a gentle soul and you can feel that when she teaches. The mood of her classes is always bright and calm, happy and warm. I honestly can't recommend her enough, except her classes are pretty full already, so for selfish reasons, I will stop my review now... Oh, in other news, I really like the studio itself. They recently had a "makeover" and upgraded several aspects, including the bathrooms, which is always nice. I've also gotten a few massages there (including a prenatal massage) and I feel like they're a good value compared to the typical spa massage. I think it helps when you feel like the people working at the studio are good people and enjoy what they do. Then you can really enjoy your time there too. Yay Mountain Yoga! read more

I love Mountain Yoga! I have been going to at least one class a week for the last several years. Lately I've been going to either Lilia's class on Monday or Wednesday mornings, or Patty's Sunday class. Lilia's class is the perfect combination of relaxing and challenging. She has a beautiful spirit and infuses the class with her positive energy. Patty's class is always a treat as well. She shares her knowledge of anatomy and the many facets of yoga, and organizes classes based on themes making great use of props and partner work. I am in my late 40s and appreciate that the other students and teachers are mostly middle-aged as well. It doesn't feel at all competitive, and the emphasis is always on doing what feels right for each person. It's a very warm, friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend it! read more

I have been doing yoga off and on for years and Mountain Yoga is the best experience I've had thus far. My classes were taught by Bethany. She is the warmest, sweetest, most nurturing teacher I've had. It was important for me to find a teacher who is supportive and caring and who sees teaching as a calling and not just a job. I have not found it easy to put complete trust in a teacher. Bethany fits all these requirements. It does not matter where you are in your practice you will love it there. I recommend anyone who wants a beautiful experience to give Mountain Yoga and Bethany a try. read more

I've been a student of Ann Dyer's at Mountain Yoga for three or four years. I was delighted when she decided to buy the studio. Since she took over a year ago, Mountain Yoga has been evolving from a decent yoga studio to a mini-cultural center in Montclair Village. Ann brings deep experience, ever-questing intelligence, and understanding to her yoga instruction and all the workshops and events she is bringing to the studio. Her asana instruction is patient, sensitive, informed, and deep. She is steeped in the history, culture, spirituality and meaning of yoga and asana, but she always presents the teachings in a friendly, accessible and understandable way. The caliber of teachers at Mountain Yoga has been steadily improving. Ann brings in nationally known instructors for workshops and series. She recently has expanded the meditation teachings at the studio. Her physical practice of asana is inspiring. She's also a fantastically talented and dedicated student of classical Indian vocal technique, and teaches singing and chanting. Is there a character limit for these reviews?? I guess I just can't say enough good things about Ann and Mountain Yoga. It's such a blessing to have Ann and the wonderful Mountain Yoga teachers, practitioners, and community in my neighborhood. I'd recommend classes here to anyone who wants top level instruction and also to become part of a friendly, warm community of dedicated yoga students. read more

This rating is an average. First I'll rate Ann Dyer. I give her one star. She runs a nice studio of her own creating with many offerings that people enjoy. But, Ann herself tends to be self-righteous and can be downright nasty when things aren't the way she wants them. She's one of those "I want to help people feel good MY WAY" type of people. It's weird how some people at Mountain Yoga suck up to her "feel good vibes" which don't always feel so good. 3-5 stars for other teachers there. Very nice and dedicated folks. Space is a little on the small side and it can get crowded for some of the more popular teachers. read more

i just got out of a massage with charles. it was an experience! the best feeling massage i've ever had. all of his moves have clear intention and he's very attentive. i am not usually up for stretching, but today's massage makes stretching seem like a necessary element. just to add, i usually prefer female masseuses, but i felt completely comfortable with charles. read more
