I came here with my bf via class pass. Before we came we read all the reviews on class pass and all the comments mentioned a smell. I thought people were just overreacting and decided to give this place a try. We took an evening class and got there about 10 minutes earlier and we did a quick check in. The front desk staff wasn't very nice or welcoming. They didn't really tell us what was where, or anything. We entered the room and man it was pretty warm. Given that it was hot yoga we were prepared. The first thing we noticed was the smell. It wasn't pleasant and smelled like humidity or a moldy scent. The class was 1.5 hours and my bf left half way as he couldn't deal with the scent and heat. Personally I don't quite understand why there's carpet. I've been to Corepower yoga and they have hardwood floor which eliminates the humid scent and also easier for cleaning. Personally I don't know how sanitary it is to have carpet for the room. I think most comments mention the smell and the sanitation of the carpet. It is quite scary to picture what is under the carpet. The decor in the location is quite unique. When you first walk in, there's a mannequin, and colored string lights along. I personally enjoy the decor a lot, which I think makes the studio quite unique. The instructor stands on a stage to teach instead of walking around to ensure people are doing the right poses. It seemed a bit weird since she was on an elevated stage with a headset and speaking over the microphone. We found parking very quickly however before a certain time, you have to pay for parking. Overall the staff isn't great, class was okay, but we can't get over the scent to go back. They have a quite large locker room and restroom. One bathroom stall and one shower, but plenty of changing space. read more

When I first walked into Funky Door Yoga for a Bikram60 class on a cold and ugly January (2023) afternoon, I wasn't fully aware of what I was getting myself into. It's not that I was new to Bikram, but 3 out of the 4 times that I've tried, it ended poorly for me and discouraged me from doing it again. But this time, it was different. I saw more positives than the negatives. I was safe. I was being observed by a professional. I wasn't going to get sick. I wasn't pressured into doing something I didn't want to do. I could work at my own pace and level. Despite the 100+ degree heat, it was comfortable. It was... pleasant, for once. And since then, I have been funky ever since. Attending classes 2-3x a week, sometimes 4-5x a week. Taking all classes whenever I can, from Ry's Hot Pilates to Jeff's Ivengar to Lynn's Bikram... whenever I had time to make the drive to Berkeley from Castro Valley, I'd take advantage of it and come to Funky Door. It has really helped me heal through my sudden personal leave from work and improved my general physical and mental health as well. Would highly recommend. Bring a friend, too! read more

FDY is awesome. I've been coming for 6 months. I love this place for their floors. This place doesn't have the mildew smell from carpeted studios, because the entire floor of both yoga and Pilates studios is a yoga mat material. In addition the locker room just got a new carpet. It's perfect for this . The music is great here. Their teachers are excellent and Pilates classes are always challenging. It's worth the price and has a good accommodating class schedule. read more

The pilates is more like a pilates plus cardio with strobe lights and dance music. --Picture a dance club vibe to do all the exercises you hate but should probably do anyways: push ups, sit ups, burpees, supermans, etc. It's always challenging and wild horses couldn't keep me away. read more

Love Funky Door! I have been coming to funky door for about 8 months now and I love it here. To start off, it's beginner friendly and the instructors and staff are very welcoming especially when it's your first time and your a little nervous maybe not sure what your getting yourself into. Each instructor has their own style of teaching which is awesome and keeps classes fun and different! Man I love this studio so much. The employees are incredible, the knowledge is deep, and the vibes are immaculate. I have been a big fan of Funky Door since I began going a year ago. If you aren't into heated yoga this probably won't be your jam, but if you are looking for a place to sweat in the bay, get your bootie onto your mat. Most commonly I take classes with Alison and Ry, but I also have enjoyed classes with Carl, Lynn, Estafan, and Marsha. One of the things that is so nice about Bikram yoga is that it's always the same sequence regardless of who is teaching it, so you get to tap into the subtle differences of what part of the body to activate and after a consistent practice the challenging aspects of the practice changes to something more personal and meditative. I love this studio and I've consistently practiced in New York, Seattle, and the Bay. Thank you guys so much for creating such a lovely and nice space to stretch out into. read more

Have been a consistent member of FD for over a year now and enjoying the membership. I usually attend hot pilates--room is very hot, lessons are challenging, and the music is my favorite part ! I have a hard time working out on my own so these group classes keep me motivated. Classes can get pretty crowded so go early or attend a morning class. (Bring your own water as well) read more

I have been coming to Funky Door Yoga since 2012 and while it has always been an amazing studio, the new ownership (Lynn, Ry, Carl, Jeff) have taken this place back to one of if not the best hot yoga and pilates studios in the world. I have been to studios in Tokyo, Amsterdam, Rome, London, Vancouver BC, Key West, New Orleans, Ann Arbor, Portland, Albuquerque, Santa Clarita, and Las Vegas and nothing really even compares. I would say the studio in Amsterdam was second but it still isn't even close. I loved working out here when I lived in Berkeley! Especially the hot Pilates classes with Ry. The vibes are fab!! The music has a great beat and everyone in the class really feels in sync. I saw on the other reviews about cleanliness but honestly I just showered at home after class and there were no issues with that! One thing is the cancellation policy I moved and before moving I told the front desk that I needed to cancel my membership. They only allow cancellation notice via email, rather than in person which is def very different from other work out studios. It's on me for emailing late, but I did get charged for an extra month that I wasn't going to class. This is not a dig, just a warning/reminder for current go-ers to be on top of it! I'm only remaining private by using my parent's email account, not my direct contact one in hopes of feeling safe after posting this review. I want to feel comfortable writing and posting this honest, and factual review. I will never forgot what had happened to me on the month of June 2023. I was a member of Funky door yoga for many years, I had zero issues with the previous owners, and spent over 3k + total in membership fees, and for many months I never even attended to any classes but still payed the monthly fees. For many years, I rarely stayed for savasana in any of the classes due to the women's locker being usually overcrowded. The women's locker room, only having 3 shower rooms, and it's challenging to even to make space for yourself to change your clothes after when you shower. Most of the time there is line waiting for the showers for the ladies locker room, and no space to change. It can feel like a chaos in the ladies locker room. The reason for me posting this review is honestly to young women like me, I would beware of taking Jeff R. (Owner) classes. I attended his class only twice in the year of 2023 I remember the first class, I have taken in year of 2023. I didn't enjoyed the class and I remember Jeff R. even mention beginning of the class 'if this is the first time you have taken my class, chances are you won't return back.' He was right I didn't not want to return back to his class.' Sadly, not knowing that day of the month of June 2023 it was Jeff R teaching that class that day. I rarely and try avoid taking his classes because of how rigid it felt by how he lead the class, and if you look at my check times it's a day I rarely attend any classes that time and day. It was just day, that time and day fitted my schedule. The second class I took of him, it really made me decide to cancel my membership. It was when I attended his class on June 2023 during my experience in Jeff class it left me thinking that his behavior towards me was very condescending, discriminating, and even assaultive. I did not give him any permission to touch me, nor in anyway expected him to stop me, and grab me by my arm while I was planning to leave the class. On the month of June 2023 when I attended one of Jeff. R's classes. I decided not to stay in Savanna as usual for many years. I was already standing up and getting ready to take off. Jeff R. stopped me and grabbed my arm or asked me 'Where are you going? You came to my class late and are now leaving early, stay until the end of class!' I was startled and stayed. This was very awkward and I cannot forget the reaction of people in class. My thoughts during end of that day while I was in resting ending pose was why was I a target ? I wasn't even in a yoga pose, I was standing up with my yoga mat getting ready to leave approaching, facing the door and unexpectedly Jeff R to stop me from behind and grab my left arm instructing me to stay to end of class. I seen instructors and even owners that are instructors taking the same classes with me left earlier than me before. As well as I seen many other members in class only showing up and staying 30 mins of class and leave. Plus, in fact when I check in at the reception desk, I will kindly ask if I'm still allowed in class, or if I'm too late or not. The front reception will make the decision before I can fully even enter in and if I'm even allowed inside to enter the class. Most of time, the front reception person will say, "not worry I still have plenty of time they haven't even gotten to the certain pose." I canceled my membership and decided never to return mainly due the experience I had with Jeff R. The cancellation process is a headache, stressful, and expect to pay another month even if you cancel beginning or mid month. Sadly, as much as I enjoyed taking the other instructor classes, and the regular instructors classes I been going for years. I still didn't think it was worth it to remain membership, because of Jeff R behavior has left me triggering negative memories of that day, so I must cancel membership, and I feel the need to post this review and not remain silent and speak up about the truth and why I really cancel. It's none of his business if I choose to leave the class early and never been an issue with other instructors and past instructors, and fact that the Women's restroom only has 3 showers, and usually crowded and no space to get out when it's time for you to want to change or get out to the door. how do you expect us to leave in a timely manner and usually there is a long wait for the women showers after class is over. Ending with Maya Angelou quotes- "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." read more

Pros: I found the studio more tuned towards workout than meditation. I loved the Pialtes classes. They are kind of a party. Particularly, one of the teachers danced to the tune I don't like the high temperature The Bikram yoga is the most miserable physical activity in my view. They do it better than other studios. But still I cannot give 5 star to an studio that offers Bikram Yoga. Not to mention the scandals. They have showers. read more

I hate to gush, but I gotta say: I'm really loving this hot yoga studio! I moved to Berkeley during Covid and couldn't wait for this awesome looking studio to re-open. It's under new owners and a new team and it's a delightful practice! Apparently, the new owners are the original founders of the practice. They sold the place and opened a few new studios, but have now re-connected and reopened "the mothership". The studio has a strong community, which is a great sign. I've met tons of people who practiced here with the original owners, and returned when they came back. The studio is full of unique color and character with fun hand drawn cartoony paintings of people doing yoga. It brings some levity, while a yoga practice can sometimes be too serious. The full Bikram series is illustrated at the top of the studio, which is a great reference- you know where you are in the class, and get tips on proper form. The studio is not affiliated with the- um, "tainted" Bikram organization (I was a little concerned). The founders of the place are a couple, and the main instructor team include some strong, kick-ass women! The main instructors, Ry and Andrea are both great. Finally, a lot of reviews mention an odor. The studio just re-opened after 18 months, and there's no smell whatsoever. Okay, gush finished. This place is THE BOMB! Here's why: 1. Safety: You are required to show proof of vaccination. You are required to wear a mask during the class. I really loved how some of the instructors were supportive of taking care of your body first rather than insisting you push yourself into the pose. 2. Classes: They have more classes than just the Bikram hot 26; they also have hot pilates, Bikyasa, and a fun hour-long Bikram mixtapes class with the amazing DJ and yogi Ry Toast. 3. The management: Lynn Whitlow https://www.lynnwhitlow.com/old-homeand Jeff Renfrow were the original owners of the studio. They are master yoga teachers and leaders in the field. They own Yoga Hell in Petaluma as well. 4. The teachers: They are phenomenal. I have taken classes with Linnea, Jeff, Lynn, Ry, Andrea and recommend them highly. 5. The pricing: A 10 class card is only 200 which makes each class only 20.00. They also offer both live-streamed classes from their Petaluma location alongside their in-person Berkeley classes. You can also sign up for on-demand yoga and live-stream only via their Yoga Hell website if you can only attend virtually. 6. The vibe: This place has massive good vibes. While I still see some old-timers (I attended this studio under the old management for 10 years) I see lots of new folks too. I love the diversity this place attracts. From the fun art on the wall created by Ken Renfro, the warm greeting at the front desk, the cute little white dog who hangs in the lobby, this place feels welcoming. I've been practicing bikram for 8 years and enjoy visiting other studios when I travel as well. I knew I'd be commuting daily to the east bay helping a friend for a week with their radiation treatment with an early morning drop off and later afternoon pickups. With a 6 hour wait I looked into bikram studios and found Funky Door in Berkeley. I had heard of the studio in SF and knew they were bikram veterans. My experience was wonderful. The studio is located very close very centrally on a popular street near restaurants and shops. I was pleasantly surprised to see how easy and abundant parking was (I'm used to the horrible parking in SF). The studio is colorful, vibrant and cheerful with the decor and music and the staff was welcoming, friendly and professional. I'd love to give a shout out to Zoe who greeted me at the front desk - she's absolutely lovely. To give context, I'd been in tears just prior to going to the studio leaving my friend in the hospital, and her warm, welcoming smile and demeanor was such a source of comfort and really meant so much to me. She was so helpful and such a beautiful ray of sunshine - she really created a wonderful experience for me and the perfect front facing ambassador for the studio. Regarding the studio, you can tell a lot of thought has been put into the layout and design. The studio is beautiful, spacious and well maintained. The flooring was clean and conveniently non slip :) I also appreciated how clean the mirrors were since the studio I go to in SF is always full of dripping sweat stains :( I also loved the cheerful bikram pose caricatures which are painted on the walls The front has cute little shoe cubbies which I appreciate since you do have to worry about walking around barefoot like other studios and the hallway has well organized bins with accessories. The women's locker room was really clean and had all the amenities needed including 3 showers, benches, hooks and lockers (for convenience you can just leave an ID and they can give you a lock). The instructor was skilled and I liked the podium format for the instructor. The heating system is great and there are beautiful large windows which look into the lobby. At the end of the class, it was so nice how the instructor closed the curtains to create a nice ambiance and I appreciated how they provide small towels if needed. You can tell they prioritize cleanliness and at the end of class they bring in a small cart well stocked with spray bottles either cleaner and towels which was very thoughtful. Overall it's a wonderful studio and wish it was located in my neighborhood since I'd become a member in a heartbeat. I'd like to express my appreciation again to Zoe for being human sunshine - you really lifted my spirits and made my day! Thank you! read more

I've been going to Funky Door pretty regularly since it re-opened in 2021, and it's been a fantastic part of my life regardless of ups-and-downs with work, kids, family, etc. The studio offers Bikram-style (26/2) yoga, hot Pilates, and some creative classes like yoga & mixtapes. I've mostly just done the Bikram classes. The owners have invested a ton into improving the space over the last couple of years and really seem to be into it for the long term. The instructors are super-welcoming, knowledgeable, and helpful, and strike a wonderful balance between supporting you wherever you're at and gently pushing you to improve. There's also an excellent community vibe. Also, Funky Door offers multiple classes a day at various times, so people can come practice regardless of their work/life schedule. I was recently traveling around the country and scoping out Bikram studios and this is SO RARE and amazingly helpful. The facilities are really solid too. After the studio re-opened in 2021, the owners upgraded the heating/humidifying system, which is now top-notch and super-reliable, and installed this amazing flooring that is textured and easy to clean. There's also now a semi-outdoor room dedicated to Pilates. read more
