The reviews say it gets VERY busy, so we got up early and got on the waitlist. By the time we got there, it was our turn, so we sat immediately. The interior was nicely laid out. We got a nice-sized booth for all of us. Our server got us coffee and water. The menu is large, so it took some time to decide and order. By the time we ordered, the place was pretty full. Our order took about 15 minutes to come, but it was worth the wait. The photos will describe what we ordered. Everything was perfectly prepared. The food was wonderful. The service was wonderful. The cost was reasonable as well. I wish we had discovered Rise N Shine earlier. We certainly will be back on our next visit.

Rise N Shine has such cute decor! I love the entrance and the overall aesthetic. The restaurant uses a QR code menu just FYI. There's also a parking lot which seemed like it would get full quickly if on a busier day. Our waitress was Karen (?) and she was very sweet. We ordered the Hot Honey Chicken and waffles (without gravy cause they ran out) and the Basic "B" with an extra side of hash brows. The chicken and waffles was pretty tasty! The waffles were light and airy and the chicken was moist with a nice crunch. I'm not sure how the gravy would've affected the texture but it was definitely delicious without it. The Basic B was standard, the bacon was apple smoked and thick. The pancakes were yummy, they came with a cinnamon butter which was perfect for the pancakes. And the hash browns were nice and crispy. Overall I really enjoyed trying this place out as it has been on my list! I will definitely come back again!

We ordered the loaded nachos, chicken parm sandwich, and the sweet sassy molassey sandwich, chocolate mint milkshake and a green tea. The half order of loaded nachos was generous in size and toppings! It was filling without being heavy. All of the ingredients were fresh. Probably one of my top loaded nachos ever. The chicken parm sandwich was also amazing! If I didn't know this was a vegan restaurant, I would not have known that the chicken was not meat. It had the texture of perfectly cooked chicken. The stretch bread was soft, the marinara was warm and perfectly seasoned. 10/10 sandwich. The sweet sassy molassey was also quite good! Very bright, filled with vegetables and deliciously seasoned tofu. Finally, the milkshake! I would have never guessed it was vegan. It was creamy, minty, and chocolatey - like drinking thin mints! I read up on the menu and discovered they offered lamb chops which is one of my absolute favourites. A taste of home for me! Friendly and efficient staff welcomed us and showed us to our table. So far so good. Very nice young woman looked after us. My wife ordered the rigatoni and I had the chops. She loved her rigatoni so much she's finishing it off 2 days later and still loving it. Sadly my dish was a bit of a disappointment. My two large chops were extremely fatty. It's the kind you simply can't cut through on a slippery plate. Trying to separate what little meat there was from the fat was impossible so I had to give up and bring it home to a cutting board and an extremely sharp knife. I haven't tried to eat it yet but it looks as fatty as the first. Both had been totally covered by a condiment that I think should have been served in a separate container to allow the diner to regulate the amount desired. The base was a pilf which made trying to cut the chops even more difficult because every time the meat or the knife slipped, the table was showered with grains....all a bit slapstick....! As I previously said, my wife loved her meal and the previous visit was epic so I hate to criticise but I'm just trying to be honest and fair. I think $45 for a couple of very fatty chops with not much meat and smothered in a vinaigrette you might not like is a bit cheeky... In different circumstances I would have sent it back. Oh well, you live and learn...

So, second night into the Comic Con weekend in Syracuse I convinced my gang to try Funk 'n Waffles. A different place had been recommended by a friend, which had also appeared on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-in's and Dives (DDD), however that was a little more than we were in the mood for, sorry Pastabilities, maybe next time. Let me preface this that parking in Syracuse can prove to be taxing, and costly. There was a street festival (not within sight, but within ear shot) that caused us to pay a $10.00 parking lot fee in order to eat there. This in a city that seemed to be utterly empty on a Saturday night, do they roll up the sidewalks here on Friday and lay them back down on Monday morning? Onto the food, before arriving I did call ahead to see if we would need to make reservations, or reserve a table and was advised by the kind person answering the phone, that they had plenty of seating. It did sound a little loud in the background, but I figured it's Saturday, it's busy. Upon arrival, I realized the noise came from their adjacent dinning room, that had a very loud live act performing. We grabbed menus from the counter and went outside so we could review and choose. Grabbed menus and went outside, yes you heard that right. There is no wait service here, it is an order, get a pager, pick up your order, and carry it back to your own table :( place. Needless to say, we looked over the menu, and I was set on getting their chicken and waffles as it was featured on DDD, and I had only had it once previously somewhere else. My friend Carol, chose the same, Robert got the Jive Turkey (Stuffing waffle topped w/smoked turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and gravy along with a pulled pork and mozzarella sandwich and Christina chose their half portion chicken and waffle. Carol and I also opted for their adult milk shakes, a creamsicle and I choose their Irish Cream Milkshake. It took about 15-20 minutes for our food to be prepared and our pager to go off, which was funny, because the pager had a warning "Pagers will not go off outside the restaurant", thankfully we did as we couldn't hear ourselves think inside. We approached the counter, and the orders were to the left, however the counter person wasn't really helpful letting us know who's was who's, what the syrups were on the counter, or which shake was which without being asked. There were wrapped utensils sitting on a tray, but we were never advised they were ours, pity, the service is lacking, especially being when you check out via CC you are automatically given the opportunity to tip the waitstaff at the point of sale. I am sorry, I am usually an excellent tipper, however this part of the experience was like being asked to tip your cashier at McDonald's. The food, okay, thankfully the food made up the lack luster customer service. The waffle was tasty, the chicken (fingers) were a little on the dark side, but they were very moist and juicy. I had used some regular syrup on the waffles alone, and then poured the provided sriracha maple syrup on top of the chicken and the waffles, and it really had great flavor. The Irish Cream Milkshake was tasty, even if it was a bit strong, but no complaints here. Our other guests fell the same way about the waffles, even the Jive turkey with the stuffing waffle that seemed odd at first, but delicious once tried. The only real complaint about the food, is the pulled pork and mozzarella sandwich could have used more mozzarella cheese. The only other issue with Funk 'n Waffles was the atmosphere, they do advise that on Saturday nights they have live music, however it was at a decidable level that made it unbearable to stay inside, and it was a little chilly outdoors. Also, with outdoors comes outdoor patrons, or those who are wandering the streets of Syracuse. We we accosted for spare change, had to listen to some guy describe the intimate sexual encounters he had with his female friend, and any and I mean ANY form of smoke that was in the air. Would there be a next trip, sure, but only when there is no music playing, we can eat indoors, and I can avoid a frivolous unwarranted tip. read more

I've been to Funk'n Waffles a handful of time and each time I am a little less in love. The first time was so cool but the magic kind of wears off once you start actually diving into the food. The actual waffles are decently priced but just OK. The niche here is that the have all sorts of cool combinations for their waffles... but the ingredients aren't anything crazy. For example I got...whatever the thanksgiving plate is (turkey, gravy, potatoes, etc) but the turkey is processed, thinly sliced meet and the gravy certainly isn't anything special. The meal is absolutely serviceable and not BAD by any means... but it could be SO much better if they used real turkey breast instead of the gross, thinly sliced lunch meat. I'm going with 4 stars because the dessert waffles are almost all near perfect. And when I think of a waffle that's what I think of anyway... Sweet more so than savory. Also the live music is really cool and I appreciate the gigs they support. Worth checking out, worth trying, probably stick to sweet and stay away from the savory waffles. read more

I'm really disappointed with my recent to-go order. My waffle was actually very good this time, but the breakfast potatoes were extremely frustrating. I paid $4.99 and the container wasn't even a quarter full. This isn't the first time this has happened, and it's discouraging to keep overpaying for such a tiny portion. I really do enjoy ordering from here, but I don't know if I can continue doing so if this keeps happening. I hope the issue is addressed. read more

I ordered the Boosty Brunch (half) from Funk 'n Waffles through Uber Eats, and unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. For $14.99, the portion size was surprisingly small -- more like a snack than a meal. While the sandwich itself was decent, with the waffle, egg, and cheese combination, it lacked the creativity and substance I expected at this price point. The value just wasn't there, and I left feeling disappointed. read more
