I came here last week with some friends and family. I had the Caterpillar roll as well as the chicken hibachi dinner. Let me tell you this. The food was quite delicious, but that's not all. This is the best Japanese Restautant currently open in Salinas. The sushi is excellent, with rice that is seasoned properly - not too heavily. We had maguro sushi to start. The fish was sliced correctly, was not stringy as is often the problem with some of the other local sushi places (though Shogun is just as good for sushi). My tonkatsu was perfect. The tonkatsu sauce was unique and tasty. The salad dressing was quite unusual, but we enjoyed it. They served tea that was tepid, but replaced it with much hotter tea on request. The prices are a little on the high side, but the portions are large. The servers and other personnel are mainly Chinese and do not speak Japanese. Great sushi, friendly service. The grill looks fun, but we were in the mood for sushi. Had two specialty rolls. One had no rice, very fresh. The other combined my favorite flavors-- shrimp, eel, avocado, cucumber. Great house salads too! I will definitely return! Easy to find right off freeway too! read more

We do enjoy Benihanas and Saporros in Monterey, but this hibachi place being in Salinas is much more convenient and we thought it worth a try. We ordered 2 combination dinners of steak and chicken and chicken and shrimp along with sushi rolls. The soup came out which was a mushroom soup that we did not enjoy. We do like the traditional miso soup, but this was not offered, at least not in this combination, and the soup literally tasted like hot water with mushrooms. The sushi rolls came out first and were quite tasty. We ordered the Godzilla roll, and the kamikaze roll which were very good. We enjoy spicy and crunchy rolls and these 2 did fit the bill. My family made quick work of the rolls and we were looking forward to the main course after such a delicious appetizer. When it arrived the rice was a bit clumpy, and the chicken was a bit too dry for my taste. The steak was adequate, but the flavor was bland and not quite as savory as the other two places I had mentioned previously. The service was great, and our server Annie was very pleasant and attentive. Overall it was a good experience, and we will return, as they have only been open a month and I am sure they will improve. read more

Although the chef was great. The service was disappointing. We sat down at 730PM and the chef did not start cooking until 845PM. To compensate for the extremely long wait they gave us a small bowl of edamame. Not the best experience and I probably will not return although the location is convenient. Really, really enjoyed myself. We sat on the hibachi side where we had the most entertaining chef. Not only was the food delicious, but the shots of sake from a squeeze bottle was fun. For the children, he squirted soda. One little boy was very shy, but at the end he was enjoying himself as much as the other 2 kids. Plus, the wait staff were very visible and helpful. This one is a keeper! Friendly, attentive service, amazing menu & food. We had a maguro (tuna) sushi appetizer--the tuna was fresh & sweet & melted in our mouths. (You pay by the piece here, not by the pair, but it was so worth it.) Hubby had the tonkatsu (pork cutlet), which he raved about. It was tender, not oily, and beautifully seasoned. I had the tendon (bowl of rice with shrimp & veggie tempuras). The tempuras were heavenly & the huge bowl of rice was seasoned exquisitely. The quality of rice was amazing. We've had Japanese food in Hawaii, the San Francisco Bay area, and in Tokyo. This restaurant is right up there. I predict it'll give the rest of the restaurants (& not only Japanese restaurants) in Salinas a run for their money. They know what they're doing. It was $40 for 2, and we didn't have alcohol. Finally it has opened. Japanese cuisine which offers you a choice to eat on dining room side or hibachi side. If you want to be entertained while dining the hibachi side is where you should go. I chose dining room because Japanese food is one of my favorite foods and I frequently visit different Japanese restaurants. The food was good portion size small but satisfying. I wasn't sure what to expect initially as the location has had frequent restaurant changes. I was pleasantly surprised with the renovation. You knew you were in a Japanese restaurant. It's split up into tables and booths for the sushi and menu dining and then the other section is the Benihana type slice and dice show. Grams and I sat at the former in a nice booth. Service was pleasant and explained things well. We both got lunch combos which was the slice and dice along with some basic sushi for me. I have to admit I was a little disappointed I felt the meal was basically a Chinese dish, especially with all the fried rice you get. The quality felt a little Panda Express, nothing wrong with grabbing some quick Panda at times but at a sit down place I expect more. Grams was not pleased but going to a Japanese restaurant is an adventure for her. The simple tuna sushi roll was fine. I'm not sure I'd go back again but if friends asked I'd just have sushi as I've heard good things about the sushi in general. read more

Went one time for dinner with two other adults; at the hibachi style meal. Very good food and presentation. Decided we thought the value was fair however there is a lot of sodium in their offerings. Second time for dinner was about three weeks later, and we sat in the main dining room. Spouse & I ordered two simple meals. Mine which was chicken and vegetables was shocking - frozen peas and carrots heated through with chopped chicken pieces and bottled teriyaki sauce. For a lot more than it would cost to make at home. I spoke to the Chinese hostess - we had chatted with her the first time at length and also one day just stopping by the bar to check in out and view the sake list. She said it was the owner's wife waiting on us; that unless you order the hibachi vegetables that's what they give you. I told her for the Salinas Valley where we grow the nation's veggies this will never do. Have since learned that this Japanese style place has mostly Chinese employees (suspected that day one) and Korean owners like most Asian restaurants. Well I might come back sometime for a special event in the hibachi dining room but otherwise I'll stick to Chinese food so I know what I am getting or drive to Seaside for real Thai food and northern parts of southeast Asia vegetables - not those from a grocery store. read more

Interesting and unique sushi rolls here. Had "The Hulk" and it was like nothing I've had before. Shrimp tempura with lobster salad inside and seaweed salad on the outside, and a touch of wasabi sauce. Not overpowering on the wasabi, which was nice because I'm normally not a fan of it. The service was fine and the chef was nice but the food was terrible! I was so shocked when my bill was 180 dollars for 3 kids and 3 adults. What a total ripoff. I wouldn't mind paying that much of the food was good, but it was all one note. Everything just tasted like soy-sauce and nothing else. The flavor was so bland except for the soy sauce. Had Hibachi dinner for two tonight. Great fun and wonderful, delicious food. Staff excellent-polite, friendly. Everything delicious from soup to salad to ice cream dessert. This restaurant rocks! Would love to go back anytime especially for birthday since they offer free Tempura ice cream for Bday. read more

Ate there tonight with my husband. Had Scallop and Steak hibachi. Steak was so tender, scallops were great also. We got soup,salad, and our meal with noodles, fried rice, fresh veggies, ice cream. Service was great, restaurant was clean. Will be returning for sure. read more

Wonderful, wonderful sushi! We had the Kamikaze roll and Transformer roll, and they were both amazingly good. We sat at the sushi bar and the chef served us their house salad, a tasty shredded dish that was absolutely delicious. There may be a little language barrier when you order, but it seems that they are trying to provide the best service possible. Came in for my husband's bday for dinner. Food was pretty tasty, we found it better than Benihana's in Monterey! He got the emperor and I had the chicken and steak hibachi. The service from making the reservation to finishing eating (they sang happy birthday and gave us a printed pic of the group,) was great! The bday dessert maybe bc I'm pregnant not sure, but it was pretty good, it tastes like funnel cake and chocolate ice cream Also I must acknowledge that when I called bc we were arriving late, they were really nice abt it and wait it for us. I'll definitely come again but the reason I'm not giving it a 5 is bc our chef had a lil dry humor towards me when I got suddenly scared abt the fire while cooking and I reacted by moving my chair back. I am pregnant so sudden loud noises and heat can throw me off a bit...he said, "You should have stayed home." I laughed it off but I didn't think that was nice. I had eaten here twice in the past and the food and service were good but not great. We decided to try the Hibachi room and that was a BIG mistake. The chef set off the fire control sprinklers with his flaming onion and water was spraying on the oily grills causing smoke & oily steam to go everywhere. There was no evacuation plan or any help from the staff, just people standing around wondering what to do. My wife slipped and fell on the oily water on the floor as we went to the other half of the restaurant. It took an hour to get our meal and the food was of poorly prepared and some was cold. We did watch the fire department and health department inspecting the fire area while waiting. They expected me to pay full price for this experience and three rounds of talking to the manager only got a 25% discount. Way to treat your customers. I will NOT be returning nor recommending Fujiyama to anyone if this is how they treat their customers. read more
