My family and I visited Roy's on the Friday before Father's Day for a party of 10. One of our dad's favorite restaurants is Roy's so we wanted to go here to celebrate Father's Day with him. However, our visit fell short due to the service (or lack thereof) by our waiter. On multiple occasions, we had to ask the busboy to send our waiter over because we were either out of soda, to take our appetizer order, or to find out where our drinks were at once we placed the order. When asking how much longer for our drinks, we were told by our waiter 'I put the order in. It should probably be ready now.' He was not friendly and was not what I expected at all of a Pebble Beach restaurant. We come somewhat often as we only live 30 minutes down the road so this visit definitely fell short. With our tip already being included in the final price, I feel as though the effort from our waiter was as if his service to our table didn't really matter as he was getting his tip either way. The restaurant was not very busy either so it just seemed like a lack of effort. I would like to recognize the busboy as he was extremely attentive and always made sure to clear our table timely. I feel as though he would make a better waiter than the individual we had. The food was subpar for a restaurant of this caliber. My bento box with butterfish came out cold. My mom & sister-in-law ordered the bento box with salmon and both mentioned how there was a lack of flavor. Located in Spanish Bay at Pebble Beach, the views are incredible. You're looking out over the golf course with the ocean just beyond, and it feels upscale and peaceful. If you time it right, you can even catch the bagpiper at 5:30pm. I've been to other Roy's locations and always order the miso butterfish. This time, it was still good, but slightly off compared to what I'm used to. It had a faint fishiness that usually isn't there, so while I still enjoyed it, it didn't quite hit that usual top tier standard. We also ordered pasta for my son, which he devoured, and a steak that was solid and well prepared. Overall, the food was good, but not necessarily the highlight. The real standout was dessert. The chocolate lava cake was an absolute slam dunk. Just a heads up, it takes about 20 minutes to prepare, so ordering it midway through your meal is the move. Totally worth it. Service was excellent. Our waiter was polite and thoughtful, especially recommending we order the lava cake early, which saved us a long wait at the end. Parking is easy with plenty of self parking available, and after your meal you can walk around or head into 17 Mile Drive, which makes the whole outing feel like more than just dinner. One tip: try to get a reservation on the earlier side and request a window seat if possible. Long on my bookmark list, this restaurant is the only to my knowledge that's still owned by its founder that's on the mainland. Booking a Sunday brunch reservation in mid-September, we arrived a little early so we walked the back of the resort towards the beach and enjoyed the sights and sounds. When we returned and checked in at the hostess stand, we were seated at a long table past the hostess stand and near the window facing the beach. As we studied the menus, we saw a mix of our favorites from their flagship restaurant on Oahu as well as several different menu items. First time stopping by Roy's and was pleasantly surprised. The food was rich and full of flavor. The vegetarian and vegan options were satisfying, which is often not the case at other establishments. The desserts were also very nice and did not taste "too sweet." The service was wonderful. I cannot remember the server's name, but he was attentive and talkative. Not sure why they had such a bad review rating but we didn't stay overnight. We walked in with a Roy's reservation. There were at least 6 bell boys standing at the entrance greeting guests. The lobby was clean, airy and neat and facing the ocean with a great view. We saw that the glass window side seating were full and asked if we could seat at the lobby outdoor at the firepits. The restaurant told us that the lobby would gladly took care of us and cancelled our reservation without any charges. We had a good time drinking wine and eating chicken wings while seated at the firepit. The staff lit it up when it was cloudy and foggy. The red blend carafes was good and was only $54. The chicken wings were delicious! Freshly fried and very crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside. There's a free water station and the staff checked on us. We had a nice walk towards the shoreline when the sky cleared up a bit as the view of the pebble beach golf course was splendid. Parking was generous for self parking but that day was a struggle to find an empty slot. No fault of Roy's! Lastly, weather permitting indoor and outdoor (with heating) seating is available. The in restraint ambiance is nice, like Flemings Steakhouse, exclusive but very social. As a result, if you are seeking a quiet and intimate dinner then Roy's is not the answer. The menu selection is great but it is dwarfed by their wine menu selection. I feel confident that if price is not object, than whatever you wine preference might be, they most likely have multiple options for you.
