Best sushi in Monterey! Service was PHENOMENAL. Portions of fish are extremely generous! The salmon skin maki is a MUST. I would easily return again. Also very affordable!!!

We were a party of 10 with one dog. We wait a bit for seat in the patio, it was a nice day and sunny. They service was amazing, we were able to split in 4 bills, which no many restaurants do that. The food tho!!! Was incredible! We come from LA where the sushi's are tiny. Everything was great portions and Fresh! Highly recommend the sashimi! Thank you to our servers!

Sun Sushi satisfied our sushi cravings! We had a doggie with us so we sat outside. They have heaters for those cold nights! The service is friendly and fast. The food comes out quick as well! Our rolls were good but nothing special. The toro was also fresh but not an amazing cut. Still, we enjoyed our food and would return to try other rolls another time.

Excellent quality sushi, extremely quick service. We also had THE BEST HAMACHI CARPACCIO EVER!!!!! Wish I had taken a photo. This is the place to come for sushi when you're in Monterey. Next level quality. Highly recommend!!

Our sushi and hand rolls on a boat platter.

During a getaway weekend my wife and I visited here in Monterey. Interestingly a wine tasting place in Carmel highly recommended this place for dinner since we were staying in Monterey. When we arrived at about 6pm Saturday street parking was easy. For those not used to summers in Carmel/Monterey always being a jacket or hoodie. We got sat immediately and enjoyed our food and experience. It was quite crowded with a nice vibe. My wife ordered her custom specialty roll to include Ebi while I ordered specialty salmon roll and Salmon hand rolls.

Had heard that this was the place to get the best sushi in town. Service was friendly and we were seated right away at our choice of tables in this small but quaint restaurant. Got a sake and beer to share and two rolls to start. Can't deny loving our two rolls being served on a little sushi boat. Decided to get one more roll. Saw on some reviews that the Lion King was a good option. TBH, we didn't love it. But they were kind enough to put the sauce on the side for us. I think the worst part was just before the final roll was delivered to our table, the restaurant became overwhelmed with the chemical smell of a cleaning product. It was super off putting and we couldn't wait to depart. A somewhat unfortunate way to end our first visit...may be the last.

Good sushi. Good service. They were really crowded when we got there and we thought we might not be able to get a seat, but the wait staff was really nice and was able to find us something. The sushi came in these cool little boats -- I've never seen them before and they felt very unique to them. It seemed to be a well-frequented place, and everyone seemed happy there. Nice atmosphere, holiday vibe. My family enjoyed their meal.

16 pcs Sashimi and three Tekka Maki

9/10 Amazing sushi, fresh and enjoyable from start to finish. Starting with the sashimi, which was incredibly fresh and delicious. Every piece was well-prepared, with clean, precise cuts that really stood out. The Tekka maki rolls were also fresh and flavorful; however, some of the cuts weren't as precise, causing a few pieces to unravel. Still very good overall. Service was fast and efficient despite how busy the restaurant was. The seating is on the smaller side, with tables fairly close together, but it was still comfortable.

This is a good sushi spot, and everything that we ordered was good in terms of flavor. We ended up ordering 3 rolls and it was about enough for 2 decently hungry people. Service was great; even though the restaurant was fairly busy and a bit crowded, we were always able to get someone's attention. I will say, don't come expecting anything exceptionally fresh (even though it is located right by the sea) -- this is a pretty standard place. The taste is about equivalent to what you can find farther inland.

Waiters and other staff were very friendly and helpful! It was very comfortable and the decor and temperature was perfect. We got seated without delay around 530pm and glad we did as people had to wait after that. They do have a nice outdoor area with outdoor heaters and a fire table - to wait or to eat outside. Food was great, but Eel was slimy which we didn't know was regular or not. Went with 7 other people (party of 8).

Dragon roll, xxx, tempura

We had the pleasure to eat here last night and the food was great all around. We came during the last hour and we didn't think we were going to make it but they accommodated us. We had the beef udon, gyoza, special rolls: xxx, dragon. And shrimp tempura. Everything came on time and overall we wish we could've brought this back home because this is going to be tough to beat. Nice little spot across from the aquarium

Thickest pieces of sashimi I've ever had in a chirashi sushi.

Ask the Community - Züm Sushi

This restaurant hasn't been on Doordash for weeks and I used to order from them all the time. It seems like they're closed almost every day now. New year less sushi? What's going on?

They did some interior mods for a few weeks and announced they were closed. They are now open again

Are there gluten free specified options on menu?

Is the patio open for dining? Hoping I can bring my dog.

The inside and patio are open for dining. Call or go by to verify their dog policy.

Is the restaurant dog friendly?

It is not dog friendly. No outside dining. Indoor dining only in an old house converted to a restaurant.

We got the Nura Sampler which had 6 nigiri pieces of huge slabs of Tuna, Yellowfin, and Salmon and 4 sashimi. The serving size was solid and it came with seaweed and cucumber salad. We also got a Lady In Red roll which was delicious. The copper tables are an interesting touch and service was great. Because it was late and there were only 3 tables, our food came out fast and we were in and out in 40 mins. Our only comments are: 1. The menu doesn't do the food justice because there are no pictures so it's hard to see what may be interesting to customers. Highly recommend updating the menu with photos. 2. We ordered house wine and they don't give a menu for alcohol. We were surprised by the $17/glass cost of a plain house cab.

The texture of the tuna was decadent and it went so well with the scallop and sauces! I chopped it up into smaller pieces just to savor it! Highly recommend! I ended with the beef teriyaki, no teriyaki sauce. I asked for rare beef and they delivered which is hard to do with such thinly sliced pieces! I am impressed! Love the house salad with it! I asked for that out first. Only suggestion is to ask for a delay if you want more pacing because the entree came quickly. The salad dressing is plentiful and flavorful, light and creamy! The ingredients all feel of high quality and the dishes are unique, and fun! The ambience of the restaurant itself is that of a bar, with dimmer lighting, but without overtly loud music, making it great for a casual hangout or date! If you want to come just for drinks, they have an extensive drink menu, including designated dates and times for happy hour (tiki hour?) with a special menu with small appetizers to enjoy with your drink. During my last visit, I ordered the jerk pork plate which came with pulled spicy pork, coconut rice, a gingery cole slaw, fried sweet plantains (perfect contrast to the spicy pork), and a small piece of a Johny cake (imagine a corncake that is a little crispy). We also ordered the coconut shrimp rolls to share and wish we would have ordered a second plate! These were filled with small pieces of shrimp, wrapped in a crunchy (but not very oily) shell, and topped with shredded coconut. They were served alongside a sweet and sour pineapple sauce (delicious, but honestly the rolls tasted great even without the sauce). My dad ordered fish of the day (he chose Mahi mahi) encrusted in macadamias and loved it! It is nice that they offer options that feel more like a sit-down restaurant than strict "bar food." I hope to return to try more things on their menu! Maybe even for a little Friday night fun drink!

The MAJOR issue is their rolls are MUCH small than expected, like mini rolls. So we ordered thinking based on the pictures and prices that we would get a normal size roll that just happened to be very expensive, and the cashier/sushi maker never chimed in to inform us it wouldn't be enough for four people. What came out were mini rolls. And everything is takeout because there's no inside seating. Once we sat down to eat, there wasn't enough for us to actually feel satisfied with what we were eating, so we had to buy food somewhere else anyway. IF you choose to eat here, order more sushi than you would expect because once you get to wherever you're going, there is no chance to get a second portion: here in lies the reason this place has a 3.5 star rating. If I'd known there was only takeout sushi at this location, we would not have eaten here because the user experience of this place is abysmal even though the food is pretty good and the cashier/waiter was cordial enough.

The purée was sweet but not overly sweet and balanced out the matcha. I'm not a matcha snob so I can't tell you if it's high quality but I loved the color and it tasted rich. My only complaints are that the matcha was a bit bitter and this drink was $10. They charge $1 for soy or almond milk substitution so keep that in mind if you don't drink cow milk! Overall, I think it taste great but I feel like it should be around the $7-8 range instead of $10-11. This is definitely a touristy area so I was expecting higher prices.
