Fu Yuan is a small hole-in-the wall stand located right by the main st. Subway. If you come earlier, things should be pretty fast. However, when I came on a Sunday around 10:30AM, I ended up waiting around ~30 mins. The service is decently fast, there are just SO many people waiting in line. The most popular one seems to be the curry fish balls. Personally prefer the shrimp, but if you see the orders it seems the curry fish balls is a favorite, so perhaps try ordering that your first time here! If you order shrimp or beef, since it is not a usual order, it takes a bit longer because they need to make it fresh. I did not like the beef cheung fun because the beef tasted very dry and there isn't much beef either. At that point, you may as well order plain cheung fun. I do admit that this place can be a bit intimidating if you do not speak the language. I do not speak Cantonese and was very overwhelmed by the old ladies yelling and cutting. I didn't really know what was going on. However, if you just bear with it and make it to the front of the line you can just point to the thing on the menu and they should understand. The rice noodle was super silky and cooked just right as it wasn't mushy or stuck together. They have lots of small eats for a cheap price. I wasn't amazed by the fish ball and rice noodle but it was decent for $3. The store is quite small, but just big enough for you to enter and place your order. They fill the bottom with rice noodles which tasted super fresh and it was still hot, then scooped curry fish balls on top which tasted super homey. This tiny storefront next to flushing bakery is run by the married couple who have the rice roll cart on Grand Street in chinatown. The prices are slightly more than the cart prices starting at $2.50 which is still pretty cheap but they have more additions than the regular fish ball rice noodle. They have have beef stew rice noodle which you can get in small medium or large and also a pork rib rice noodle. And besides the regular fish balls they also have curry flavor for the same price. All the noodles are made fresh in their steam drawer where they pour the rice batter and scraped out and formed into tasty rolls. Dont forget to ask for all the sauces like oyster, soy, peanut and sriracha. Their made to order rice rolls can have fillings like chicken corn, ham egg, ground pork or beef or you can go the traditional route of dried shrimp just a slightly added shrimpy umami flavor. You can add corn or egg to any of these rolls for .50 cents extra. They have a more extensive menu of rice noodles with pork or beef stew and also congees with mashed pumpkin, seafood or pork flavors and you can also pick up some tea eggs here as well. While there is something special about watching your rice rolls be made from scratch like at Joe's Steam Rice Roll, at Fu Yuan the plain rolls are already made in another room in the back and the protein and sauces are added when you order in front of you. Being a fake Cantonese (aka living in canton for a huge portion in my life but still don't know how to speak Cantonese), I found the food here made me feel like home. Food here were super cheap and yummy. My friend and I ordered a small cheung fun with an additional egg and veggie and a rice noodle roll with curry fish ball. They made the cheung fun using the "dresser" (that's how we call it back in China). The rice roll was thin and the sauce can penetrate inside the rice roll so that it was not doughy at all. The curry fish ball with rice roll was also very authentic. Fish balls were chewy and it had the fish flavor. I think the sauce contained sesame, peanut, soy sauce and some chilies. It went very well with the rice noodle roll since the roll itself did not have any flavor. It probably contains a shit ton of calories but whatever, it made me happy and made me feel like home :) Since it was our first time coming to flushing, my friend and I wanted to try a variety of restaurants and these were the only two things we ordered. Pretty good place for beef (or whatever you like) rice noodles: especially when I live near Wong Kwong Hop in Elmhurst that makes rice noodles by the tons every day). The rice noodle is made fresh so you have to wait and the place is crazy small! Only maybe 4 customers can squish into the place and place their order so go on an off time. On weekends the line is long. I tried one of their Chinese joong with peanuts ($2.50 and it is big and they also have mung bean too) and it was pretty good but it has salty egg yolk inside which some people dislike. Literally just a door and 4 ft into the store is the counter and the cooks. I tried the rice roll with fish balls, congee with pork and preserved eggs, and beef rice roll. The beef rice roll was not the way Im used to from dim sum. It was scattered bits of beef and not in 3 clean segments. This was just average. The congee lacked some salt, it looked like they make plain congee and just mix in the ingredients after the fact. So the flavor is not infused into the porridge. The main star is the rice roll with fishball. Or as most know it as the yu dan chern fun! The rice noodle drowned in oyster sauce and peanut sauce. It is absolute heaven and Fu Yuan pulls it off just how I remembered it as a child. Note: this is flushing, so likely someone will try to skip the line and shout their order. It was good but once again I have an issue with them wearing gloves and still touching money. The gloves are not to protect their hands.... but it's Flushing, so it is what it is. Another issue I have, although a minor one, is that I don't speak Chinese fluently, so depending on who's serving, they don't ask if you want all the sauces.
