Food first, thoughts after... Went recently for their $55 date night. Overall so fun and a great experience. The girlie who sat us and took care of us was so cute and so considerate. She moved two tables together so we can sit together. The vibes were casual and bright. The tea was delicious and so aesthetically pleasing. The food was good. The pesto chicken pasta was a little bland and watery but overall good experience!

Great place. Service was great and so was the coffee & food. Nice place to hang out and do some work.

Shrimp + Grits
Hosai W.

I stopped by Frothy Monkey in Birmingham after hearing good things about their shrimp and grits. I went in the early afternoon, around 2:30-2:40 PM, and ordered the shrimp and grits along with a Hugo Spritz. They didn't have the full Hugo Spritz mix available, so I was served what tasted like just Prosecco instead. It was fine, the service was okay. The shrimp and grits themselves were good overall. The dish comes with blackened shrimp and andouille sausage. I don't eat sausage, so I skipped that part, but the shrimp were flavorful and well-cooked. My main critique is that the dish was very oily--more oil than I personally prefer--which took away a bit from the experience. Would I go back again? I'm not completely sure, but I'm glad I tried it. Overall, it was a good experience, just not one that fully won me over.

Lovey experience in downtown Bham! My friend and I both got the iced green tea and it was *astounding* with oatmilk. Loved the chips and salsa more than the sandwich, but would get it again. Service was a little long winded at first, another client was waiting for their check for over 15-20 minutes until it was brought to them, but after that period it picked up. Creative backdrops, walls, jewelry box bathroom and beautiful outdoor area complete with overhead heaters for cooler months!

Biscuit Board ( so good)

A couple of friends and me came here for Sunday brunch. It was busy so there was about a 40 min wait. This wasn't a horrible wait and actually went by pretty fast. The hostess guy got us seated in a comfortable corner table. The inside of this spot is really cool and very inviting. There's also bar seating and even outdoor patio seating in the rear. Very nice. We received good service but there were some points where it was kind of slow. No biggie. My friends ordered omelets , one friend had a chicken dish and I had the smash burger. The food was fresh and well prepared. My burger could have used more salt; I still enjoyed. My friends ordered coffee drinks to which they liked too. I had 2 mimosas .. they were cool. We enjoyed ourselves at Frothy Monkey annnnd will return back for more!

We came here two years ago and my ladies wanted to return so we did. I got the breakfast plate again and it was nice. I originally ordered the coconut coffee mix but I really didn't iike it as it had shredded coconut so I ended up ordering a hot cocoa. That was fine. The breakfast plate was enough for two servings. We just only had 1 sausage. Service was ok. And we were sat next together to window.

The BE Hive Bowl with Quinoa & Black Bean Burger instead of the Suasuage Pattie

As I'm vegan I decided to review their brunch menu prior to going. I got The Be Hive Bowl. I was very disappointed in this option. To be fair they were out of the vegan sausage Pattie so I subbed for the quinoa patty. But still the vegetables were not very good, the cheese and uncooked kale felt out of place. Thankfully the service made up for the meal. The staff was very polite and removed the item from my bill although I offered to pay for it! If I wasn't vegan they'd get a higher rating from me. The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere. I had a lot of faith in this meal - Frothy Monkey seems to be the only restaurant in downtown Birmingham with dedicated vegan options for brunch so please for the sake of the vegan community step it up! Update: The staff allowed me to try the Breakfast crumble which is a vegan breakfast pastry. It saved the day. Superior service!

Royale Sandwich

I've probably been to Frothy Monkey a dozen times--both in Birmingham and Nashville--and it's consistently just okay. The menu is diverse, which makes it a decent option for groups since there's something for everyone. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was disappointing. I ordered the Royale sandwich, and it was pretty pitiful (see photo). I probably won't be back anytime soon.

Smash Burger

I was a little disappointed in this place because people kept suggesting that we try it. We went on a Sunday before It was crowded. Quite a few empty tables at the time we dined in. The service was extremely slow. We didn't get our coffee until the meals came out some time later and we ordered a biscuit board, but that also never came out. We tried the salmon sandwich, the smash burger, and the broadbend omelette. The salmon sandwich as a sandwich was not good but i thought the salmon piece on the sandwich was outstanding but as far as a sandwich, I thought the bread was not good for the sandwich same went for the Smashburger. The bread used did not suit the Smashburger. The broadbend omelette though tasty was seriously lacking in filling. Maybe it was an off day or off shift, either way didn't live up to the hype.

Yelp! Amazing breakfast. We had a sisters sleepover and walked around from the Airbnb to Frothey Monkey. We were seated at the window. It's early, but everyone is ready to serve. We decide on drinks. I got the Turtle Latte, Roxy got a fancy fire pot Chai and Jenny got the fancy Rosemary honey latte all hot. They all taste Amazing. We excited! We are a party of 4. Roxy got the Broadbent Omelette. Jenny got the black bean burger with side salad. Joni got the Royale with multi grain chops and salsa! I got the Farm Breakfast. Everything so good. This stuff here fresh and good. Y'all already know , when I'm happy, I'll be back.

perfectly pleasant Havana latte
Timothy B.

Recently enjoyed a Havana latte and a royale sandwich. Reasonable price and quality food, sub par and apathetic service

Latte

The food was good but definitely pricey. Annoying that they had a LGBTQ flag hanging but don't even have an American flag. I guess it's good that they can have a restaurant in the best country in the world so they can promote whatever they want.

Is their patio dog friendly?

If I am wanting to have a larger party, would I be able to put the outside tables together, like a party of 14?

Hello Madalynn, we would be happy to serve your group! Give us a call at (205) 974-3600, and we will be sure to make a note about your party size and time to expect you so we can move the tables for you. Hope to see you soon!

What's it like during the day? Can you work from there or is it more dining focused?

Hey there! We have areas that are suited for working that have plenty of plugs, just let the host know when you arrive if that is what you are looking for. Some times of day are busier than others so seating availability will vary based on that.

This place is my type of vibe!…read more Trattoria ZaZa has been on my list of places to stop at for several years. Parking often deters me but after attending the Italian Festival earlier that day, we had a craving for pizza. I ordered the combo that includes 2 slices of the day with salad. Since I wasn't overly hungry, I offered him one of my slices and he added another slice to the order. We paid and were given a number to place on our selected table. Jazzy music played in the background while we waited on our order to be brought to the table. The natural lighting, while beautiful, made it a little warm in the building. One of the waitresses propped the door open that leads to the restrooms (which are in the hallway near the elevators) in order for cooler air to make its way in. That wasn't a deal breaker, but do be aware of that on warmer days. Our food came out after a short wait. I kept my 3 cheese slice, and gave him the pepperoni one. The cheeses were very rich and the salad, while simple without the frills, was perfectly sized and drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette that was just the right amount. While I enjoyed my meal very much and the ambiance, he wasn't overly impressed with his. He didn't want the fresh herbs on his slices and knocked all of them off, lol. He's a simple guy with simple taste. This is definitely a place I will be revisiting with one of my girlfriends and not him next time as he didn't appreciate what ZaZA had to offer. Everyone we encountered was helpful and courteous. Our food, including drinks, was around $28, which was not bad for a cute, eclectic spot downtown. If you haven't been, make sure to try them out soon. Just don't wait as long as I did to visit!

Where to start? Went on a weekend, place was packed. The…read moreBad: 1. SLOW. Waited in a line inside of 4 people in front of me. There was someone at the podium at the end who i thought was a server. Was not. After a 15 minute wait (why did it take that long?), we got to the podium person. And found out they were there to take our order, not seat us. Can only assume the 15 min delay was because people were trying to figure out what to order. No signage anywhere saying, please have what you want ready while you wait in line. 2. No menus, anywhere. Yes they can be printed and people in line could take one and figure out what they want. Yes, the menu could be put on the wall behind the server in large lettering. But no, they make you scan a QR code on the wall and view the menu on your phone, so that's inconvenient and a bit obtuse. 3. When we finally place an order for pizza, was told that, "they dont serve pizzas on the weekend, but we could order their "brunch pizzas", instead. Which on the counter, was small anemic cut slices of thick bready pizzas on the cutting board/table. Those each were $8.50 according to the menu. Figure the math of 2 small slices of pizza per person for 2 people vs just ordering a large pizza. But they don't serve pizza during brunch- Trattoria literally has the word "Pizza" in their last name- twice actually- yet you have to order a nearly $9 slice of pizza sitting out on a table for who knows how long, and of the flavor of their choice, not yours. It was flat out insulting to go to a pizza based establishment and be told they won't serve whole pizzas. We left and went to Uptown to a pizzaria there, and had a really good whole pizza, salad, dessert, and drinks, and all for half the price then if we had gone to Trattoria. Wanted to give this place a chance for years, but did not work out the way i had expected it to.

But I'm sorry the food? (In my case shrimp and grits) was NOT GOOD. And don't get me wrong, it wasn't a horrible flavor, but the flavors it did have were terrible. First the grits are not smooth at all. Like they aren't super course but they definitely could have been cooked down more. And they had little seasoning. And that's being generous. Then the "creole" sauce on top? Can we ask the audience what they consider creole? Because that was just pure tomato sauce. Like straight out a can, had to be. No way someone cooked that sauce from scratch or even with creole seasonings or typical additives I'm sorry I just refuse to believe it. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST... 5 shrimp??? You can't be serious. I could understand 5 shrimp if they're the huge jumbo ones but these are smedium at best. Like I feel BAMBOOZLED because no way I paid 24$ for 5 shrimp and maybe 1.5 cups of grits. But imma be honest I'm not surprised the food wasn't that good. Any place that puts on the bottom "we can't refund for food you don't like" that should tell you everything you need to know.
