If you're looking for some pretty dope vegan or vegetarian options and a cup of Joe, Frothy Monkey is the place to be! I wasn't too keen on vegan food as a primary diet, but I love vegetables as much as meat proteins. That said, I was in the mood for a burger and a coffee... Frothy Monkey delivered with a Quinoa & Black Bean burger, and the Rosemary Honey Latte. The burger texture wasn't bad at all, and the flavor was noticeably good to be honest. And that vegan garlic mozzarella is legit! Normally, I'm a plain, black coffee connoisseur but I saw Rosemary and wanted to gamble, and it wins! As I sat and watched the 2nd Ave N traffic breeze by, my palate was being pampered. If I ever find myself in a position where meat protein must be removed from my diet, I know that I have options and can get creative. I love the vibe here, too. Very eclectic, almost boho-ish. The staff was very friendly and gave some great recommendations as well. Oh, and you can order the BE Hive breakfast bowl well after breakfast if your vegan palate is in the mood for some breakfast. Deleted my original review a while ago because I thought it may have been too mean. RE: 1 star, "my iced latte tasted like lukewarm Walmart chocolate milk and instant coffee." I should say, on that same visit, the staff were all very nice to us and even let us pray in a corner of the restaurant. I do also love that they are open late since most coffee shops close in the afternoon. Went back again to study and was pleasantly surprised with the visit at first. The space is warm and cozy, the staff is very nice. There are outlets all throughout the place and a solid WiFi connection. All was going well until halfway through my golden latte I spot a hair leisurely floating atop. Mind you- very certain it couldn't have been mine (see: hijab. lol.) Great place on the Eastside of downtown Birmingham, right off of I65 / US31 / I20 if you are driving through. There was a line & wait for dine in Brunch but I got in & out for my Cafe Mocha & Palmetto Cheese & Country Ham sandwich in 10 mins! What a great setting. Old brick walls, eclectic art and simple design. Formed to function, definitely! Food was really good, authentic and grounded, simple but classic. A the Mocha was chocolatey & filling! I should have gotten two! Highly recommend but only been here once on a softball weekend! Will be back next time staying here, or going through! read more

I actually love this place as a cafe. But the happy hour on this Friday night was awful. I got the Cottanera Barbazzale Etna Rosso wine and got the glass you see in the picture below. I asked the waiter when he brought it to me if that was a full pour of wine, and as he was walking away he turns back with a scowl and shakes his head -- and continues walking. I can't say enough good things about this business. I was recommended to check this place out when I was hunting for queer-friendly businesses in the area. There was a huge progressive Pride flag hanging and some of the staff was visibly queer, which made me feel safe and welcome. I didn't plan on drinking that early but the espresso martini sounded too good to pass on and I was right, it did not disappoint. I had two of them and a salad with salmon, which was the perfect serving. The bar tender and staff were also helpful in recommending other queer venues to check out in the area. The food was so good that I came back twice and my friends went every day of our 5-day trip. read more

I have been anticipating the arrival of this coffee shop since they announced they'd be taking over the former Urban Standard location (I unfortunately never had a chance to experience Urban Standard, but maybe it's a good thing bc I probably would be sad to miss it based on other people's reviews). The long and short of it is this: -coffee was delicious, I don't like the fact that they upcharged $1.25 for oat milk (I think typically it's like 50-60c for milk alternative so that's ridiculous, especially when it's not listed anywhere that there is an upcharge). -pastrami sandwich was sad. Our server did warn us that they ran out of the bun, but this was a very skimpy pastrami sandwich. It was equivalent to ~2 slices of bacon -service was good. I just had higher expectations for this place, and I also thought it was going to be a 24-h coffee shop? But maybe I was thinking about someplace else. I probably will stick to only coffee though for future visits. $42 for 2 sandwiches and a coffee just seems ridiculous. read more

We went this morning excited to try this new addition to Birmingham, and we ordered the oat milk cappuccino and Havana latte (cinnamon, star anise, vanilla). We went in expecting a coffee shop but now believe that Frothy Monkey is trying to be a brunch spot that happens to serve coffee on the side. The latte and cappuccino were both a bit too heavy on the foam, and the cappuccino was really just a 12oz latte. The space and staff were welcoming though, and I look forward to trying their brunch items next time and will update this review. read more

I have a 3 because the service set this place back. There wasn't many people when I got there but still took almost 25 minutes before anyone came to us. The waitress never filled our water glasses, forgot my friend's butter for her bagel so she just ate a naked bagel. Wait staff was nice when they appeared so I'll give them that. The place is cute and has a cozy vibe. My French toast was delicious. Since my friend never got her butter for her bagel, she took some bites off my plate. The menu options are creative and I've always liked what I ordered. The space itself is very cool with brick walls and lots of seating. I've found that even during peak periods the wait isn't terribly long. The service varies and is consistently better when they're not busy but it's a great place for a meal with a really good cocktail. read more

We were visiting family here in Alabama and staying in downtown Birmingham. We had brunch here this early afternoon and it was a great pick. We were greeted by a super warm/friendly lady named Mak. She even checked on us later to make sure we were enjoying our food. There was a 25 min wait but they had a bar inside so we decided to get a drink while we waited. I was served by Kyle and I ordered the margarita. Kyle was friendly and seemed to enjoy his job. The wait didn't take all 25 mins and we were seated. I ordered the omelette and it was delicious. They let me modify it just a tad bit without any concerns. Inside, the restaurant is an open floor plan with lots of light. It's got a farm/fresh/modern look. It was very clean and all the employees there seemed to be in good spirits. Everyone was smiling which is less common these days. The only reason I didn't give it a five star was our waiter. He seemed to be the only one who didn't seem happy. To be fair, he may have been new. He wasn't rude, just not friendly or attentive like the rest of the staff seemed to be. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and looking forward to going back before we leave Alabama. read more

I have been wanting to try this place ever since Birmingham got a location, and they did not disappoint! I came here to have brunch with my friend Joy this past weekend. I noticed we have been getting so many cute Nashville based places, and I say keep them coming! I knew by the name of this place I wanted to try some sort of an iced coffee drink and get some good food too. They have such a cute indoor and outdoor seating area. Coming here Sunday at brunch, there was a 30 minute wait which the host told me if I chose to sit at the bar, I may be served faster so I opted for that and was glad I did. The bartender/barista that took care of us was super nice and it was fun to talk to her. I tried the espresso martini. It was so delicious, I could have had five of those honestly! To eat, I had the Royale sandwich that is served with a side of chips and salsa. Their were so many tasty looking menu options. Lots of brunch items, sandwiches, and salads. My team and I were out for a working lunch and enjoyed our food. We had a very unfortunate moment where one of the managers - McKenzie - yelled (at full volume) at a patron who appeared to be homeless. I asked the patron's name and I think they said "Rose." As soon as Rose walked in, McKenzie yelled at Rose to leave and that all she could get was ice water. At no point was Rose aggressive or hostile - which is what made the situation so surprising. Rose had simply walked in calmly and quietly to the counter to place an order when she was met by McKenzie's yelling. It felt like McKenzie wanted to shame this person for just being there. I intervened on Rose's behalf and asked Aaron (our waiter) to please add anything Rose wanted to our bill. At that point, McKenzie walked away. I stayed at the counter and spoke with Rose to ask what she would like and all she wanted was a Coca Cola and a chocolate chip cookie. My company and I were struck by how easily it could have been for McKenzie to speak one on one with Rose and found out what she needed instead of yelling at her the moment she walked in. Even if Frothy Monkey couldn't offer more than ice water, talking one on one with respect and empathy could have yielded the intended result. It was pretty disheartening! The homeless community in Birmingham is growing due to increased rent and many other factors and instead of treating this person like another human, McKenzie treated her like she was disposable. Aaron and B - two other managers - came to our table on separate occasions to apologize for the way McKenzie treated Rose. At no point did McKenzie herself apologize. While the apology was appreciated, our team couldn't shake how chilling and disheartening it was to witness a member of Frothy Monkey's team treat one of our homeless neighbors in such a demeaning way. While we hope to be back - we also hope that the staff is trained on how to treat everyone with kindness, empathy, and respect even when reinforcing boundaries or expectations. read more

I could not recommend this place enough. For starters the staff is incredible and talk to you like you are friends. They give suggestions on the menu and overall, the best group I have seen at a restaurant. The set up of the restaurant is close, but still very roomy with beautiful earthy decorations and a live plant at each table. I ordered the shrimp and grits with an espresso martini. The food was a large portion and was very delicious and same with the martini. The grits were not thick or gritty and had a perfect consistency. The only thing is that you will most likely have to wait for a table, but it is worth the wait and the wait is never long, maybe 10-20 minutes each time. read more
