We stopped in the Frosty Chalet on our way up to Lake Tahoe. We wanted a place we could get a burger, and we were so happy with this place! The burgers are cooked to order, fries are seasoned with some kind of magic, and they have shakes and malts. There is a really nice park right across the street, and the restaurant offered us a disposable tablecloth so we could take our food and eat at the picnics tables in the park. It looked like the restaurant also had some tables, but they were closed due to the current COVID indoor dining restrictions. So I've been here more than once and less than 10 times recently. I enjoy making this stop in Lone Pine, since they have the best root beer freezes and French fries in the county. It's a throwback to the road stop greasy spoon. The hamburgers are OK. The grilled cheese sandwich is greasy but good. There are only two drawbacks. Once you place your order, pay attention to when they call your number. Stay near the pickup window. Also, be sure to carry cash because they don't have a credit/debit card machine. read more

This is a fabulous, little place. Our party had a corn dog, hamburgers, onion rings and fries. Everything was incredibly fresh and favorable. The prices were very reasonable and everyone was super friendly. For dessert we had a chocolate dipped cone, a peanut butter dipped cone, a root beer float and a hot fudge sundae. While I am well aware of the memories and emotions associated with this place: families on vacation, road tripping, beautiful eastern Sierra destinations, I have to say that none of the food that we have tried is even a little bit enjoyable. This place is super overpriced, the staff is not friendly at all. Hey- I get it. Tourists are annoying if you're a local- I also deal with tourists further up the road. This is a cool little spot located across a park in Lone Pine. They have a lot of ice cream options, which I think they're known for but I got the cheeseburger and fries and my boyfriend got the burger boat which is their gluten-free option. I would give my burger a 3-star. Wasn't the greatest, the burger patty was super thin and the fries were good but over seasoned. My boyfriend said the burger boat was okay as well. This little shanty is quite perfectly the halfway point between the Antelope Valley and Mammoth Lakes which means it is the idea pit stop. I've definitely been having bad luck lately. I was excited to try Frosty Chalet recently while on a drive to Mammoth Lakes for a camping trip. Rather than go to a fast-food chain, I wanted to support a local business that been around for a long time. The menu includes a chicken basket which unfortunately they didn't have available the day I was there. Instead I opted for a cheeseburger and fries. I took my order across the street and ate at a table in the park. I took a bite of my burger and looked down -- and there was A HAIR in it. I also noticed the meat wasn't cooked thoroughly and the inside was very pink and rare-looking. I was even more appalled that the meat patty wasn't even thick so I'm not sure they even grilled it for an appropriate amount of time for it to be cooked through. Yikes. More disturbing was the fact that the man grilling the food didn't have long hair so I'm not sure how it ended up in my food... All in all, disappointing meal and sadly I probably would have been better of dining at Carl's Jr across the street. For the past 30 years, I've stopped here every time I pass through Lone Pine which is about twice a year. It's not out of this world but they make a great hand-dipped soft serve. I had a malt this last time through it was a decent. Lone Pine isn't the "cool spot" on the run up 395, so just saying the words "Frosty Chalet" brings back chilly memories and good times. We stopped by on our way to camp In Big Pine for our 10 year anniversary and was excited to see this burger is open again for the season. My hubby and I both had the double cheeseburger and boy were they delicious. Seasoned perfectly with all the toppings... I love crinkle fries especially with season salt and this place scored on that front. Hubby got onion rings which were yummy, even though I prefer mine cooked crispier... I sent three young teenage girls inside here today. They all came out saying how incredibly rude the older lady was to them. The youngest said she asked for a 'chocolate malt please' and the lady said to her 'that sucks'. They said she was rude to everyone, but the younger employees working in the back were nice. They said she was yelling at the employees too as well as being rude to customers. I gave them a $20.00 bill for whatever ice cream they wanted to get. For years this was the place to stop in Lone Pine it was so much better than any fast food places there. We used to always stop there every time we were in the area. The burgers were thick, juicy and very tasty. The fries were the best, the seasoning was different than any other seasoning I've ever tasted, they were the best, then they closed, which I could never understand because they were always busy. Fast forward to earlier this year, every time I went up that way I noticed that they were working on the place and couldn't wait until they opened back up hoping it would be the same as it used to be. Recently on the way back from a day of fishing we stopped for a late lunch/early dinner. Upon walking in we noticed that the same decor seemed to be on the walls, that's a good thing. The prices were a little on the high end but I remembered the food being worth the price. Then I talked to the cashier and was very pleased to hear that it was the original owners kids that reopened it, WOO HOO! I ordered the same items that I used to order years back, a cheeseburger and fries and patiently waited in anticipation to once again enjoy the meal. That's the end of the good things I have to say about it. The burger was not as thick and juicy as they used to be. I believe they used to be hand made with fresh beef, at least they tasted like it. I was so surprised that the burger was a small, flat, frozen, no better than McDonald's type burger. Onto the fries, they used to be very thick and tasty, once again I believe they were homemade, not anymore. They were basic frozen crinkle cut fries. I do however have to say that the seasoning salt was as good as it used to be, very tasty but I still was not impressed. Would I go there again, very doubtful, unless they go back to the way it used to be. Not sure what all the hype is about. Normally when passing through pine pine we stop at the Pizza Factory, but after a few days backpacking the wilderness we just wanted a great burger and fries. Maybe I caught Frosty's on an off day, but we waited 35 minutes for a couple of double cheese burgers and fries. The fries were great, the burgers were so-so thin, flimsy meat that was overlooked, and the buns were nothing special. If you're looking for a good burger in Lone Pine, this would not be my first choice. I think next time we're sticking with the Pizza Factory. read more

For a small little "shack", this little place packs a punch!! Quick burgers and ice cream stop on way home from Mammoth. Kids grabbed Cheeseburgers and Onion Rings. Hubby and I got "lettuce wrap" burgers (sans buns). After the meal, we all had ice cream to go on the road with us. Not gourmet, but tasty and the perfect end to our Labor Day weekend vacation. I had seen a few reviews on this place and so we stopped in for lunch today while going through Lone Pine. I was dissappointed because for the price its not very good for what you get. Have cash only they don't take anything else. Burgers are small, and have no flavor. They used processed cheese in the burger and grilled cheese, yuck. Meat patti was super thin. Fries were okay, but the gentleman taking orders didnt seem overly friendly. The lady giving the food orders was rude and snatched the number tag rudely from my husbands hand. It could be cleaner, this place could be good, it has potential but I don't ever plan on stopping back in sorry. Its a small town and you'd think you'd want customers coming back when in the area. But they dont seem to care. Simple ice cream cones were a bit pricey and I think its those cheap swirl mixes. So if you decide to go in hope your happy because I wasn't. read more

I have eaten at the frosty several times now and have purposely waited to review them because some of the negative reviews! I don't like to review a business on the first visit I don't feel it is fair to the customers or the business. I have always had quick friendly service at each visit. The employees from young to old have been quite helpful with questions and chatty each time I have initiated conversation. Something you don't usually see in this type of business any more. (It really reminds me of a old school small town business) The menu has a nice variety of items to choose from, not to many or to few. I haven't had everything on the menu but the items Ive tried have been good to outstanding! The Cheese burgers are definitely my favorite!!! Ive seen so many other fast food chains show photos of the food and when you get the real thing its not even close to what the picture looks like. These burgers look fresh and as attractive as a magazine ad (Lol) Other customers have recommended to me to try the double cheese burgers but I personally like singles, Better balance of flavors so I end up buying 2 cheeseburgers opposed to a double. The thought of ordering 6 crosses my mind every time I order, there just so damn good! Occasionally I will add a hot fudge sunday to my order. I like the fact they are not some skimpy little water cooler cup with ice cream in it, you get what you pay for! The fries have been awesome every time I have ordered. They are crisp hot and the seasoning makes them very addictive! The one thing that really surprised me the most was how clean the kitchen and dining area is. I work in a industry where I am exposed to dozens of commercial kitchens and the Frosty Chalet hands down without a doubt has the cleanest kitchen I have ever seen!!! You can see through the window on the side of the building where they make your food. It appears to be a old building but it has a sparkle like its brand new and just came out of a box! Ive eaten at the other burger places from time to time and after eating here a person would have to be nuts to want anything else! Pretty gosh darned good. Shakes are tasty but not super flavorful (banana kind of tasted like vanilla....). Onion rings and fries both are awesome. Burgers are good and reasonably priced. No gluten free options other than just putting it on top of shredded lettuce (not really a hand-held option like In-n-Out style). But flavors in the burger: good!
