I am so sad to see that Frosty chalet is permanently closed. It is a stop that I look so forward to on my yearly trip from Palm Springs to Spanish Springs Nevada to visit family. Not just for the food which was delicious but the staff and owner always made myself and my dog feel very welcomed. The owner was so kind... On my way back one year I realize that I was going to arrive 20 minutes after they closed... When I called to verify the hours, the owner said don't worry, honey. I will prepare your order and stay until you get here safely. What the what???! You just don't find businesses like that anymore that go the extra step to make a difference. Nice place to take a breather from the road. If you have a dog, head across to park and run ROVER in the grassy dog park. Dog park offers water and two fenced areas for small & larger dogs. I've driven past the Frosty Chalet on several road trips to the mountains and decided this time, I'm going to stop by to try something sweet. I was craving it. Decided on a banana milk shake $5.99, portion size was good for the price, flavor was a tad artificial as there wasn't real bananas in it (but that's okay), ice cream was thick. This is kind of a tough rating for me. It's good in that the food comes out in a reasonable timeframe, the burgers and fries are fresh made, and if you're doing soft server that's even faster. The outdoor seating is a few good quality metal picnic tables, a majority of them under awnings/shade, and parking is sufficient. The minuses are, they're cash only, and the food honestly is nothing special. So as pleasant as it is to support a local restaurant it's also hard for me to say I would make this a regular stop up and down this stretch of US-395. read more

Outside dining area and ordering area was clean. They had hand sanitizer and staff was wearing masks. Prices are a little high for 2 basic burgers, 1 with cheese and onion rings. $20.20. No drinks. Burgers needed seasoning for sure. Onion rings were delicious and hot. Not terrible but nothing more than basic. The service is friendly(ish?), the workers almost looked like they were gossiping when we walked in. We weren't greeted right away they all just kind of stared. We ordered a cheeseburger, fries and chocolate shake. Pretty basic, not that tasteful or juicy. You could just go across the street to Carls for a better burger. The shake saved the review. After all it seems why a lot of people go there. $5 for a cone is steep to me when you can goto Mcds 2 min down the road. We stop here whenever we are going to Mammoth or Tahoe. This time was absolutely awful! I understand food prices have increased everywhere. However, I was a little surprised to pay almost 50.00 for 3 cheeseburgers , 1 fries 1 small soda and 1 bottle of water. The burgers tasted disgusting. We threw 2 away. The fries had to much seasoning salt. Afterwards, we decided to get ice creams. I wanted a butterscotch sundae (on their menu) only to be told, they have caramel instead. Even though it's not the same, I was happy to order that. Also ordered a large milkshake. So by now we have spent close to 60.00 total. I asked the older man that was taking our order if I could purchase a small 2oz of sprinkles for my granddaughter. She doesn't like ice cream. I offered to pay any amount he chose. He said NO ABSOLUTELY NOT. He then said it's our policy to not sell sprinkles. I said ok I'll buy a vanilla ice cream cone, with sprinkles on the side!!! He said NO that cannot be done. My granddaughter was listening and was getting sad by this point. I told him " I'll pay you $10.00 for a little 2 oz cup of sprinkles, please for her"! The man told me " if I sell you sprinkles we will run out and have none left for other customers ".... I told him I'm not asking for 25 POUNDS, but a tiny little 2 oz ketchup container of sprinkles. He stood his ground and said NO!!!! It's our policy to not put sprinkles on the side. That man needs to get out of helping customers. His attitude was very mean spirited. His attitude when i asked what was on a cheeseburger was just nasty. He rolled his eyes and proceeded to tell me. (I should have cancelled my order right then) To sum it up- spending $60.00 on subpar food then looked at me and my young granddaughter and wouldn't sell us a few darn sprinkles!! The sundae was great but I took a few bites and threw it away as I felt bad enjoying my treat while she had nothing. That man ruined a fun place to stop and eat. The park outside to enjoy the food or ice cream is something we have always looked forward to stopping at. Not anymore. Frosty has the appearance of an old style woody architecture with a grassy area and picnic benches available for mild weather. Lots of parking is available behind the building and along the front. Prices reflect the cost for a glimpse and taste of hamburgers from days gone by. Slightly higher than you'd expect at today's fast food joints. Double cheeseburgers go down easily after a long drive. Order a side of fries to top it all off. It feels good to walk about take in some fresh air, stretch your legs, and enjoy a flavorful chocolate malt. We were on a fishing trip and noticed this place when we were getting gasoline, as a fan of hometown businesses we had to give it a try. As you can see from the pictures everything looked great, the ice cream was as good as any chain restaurant and the service was with a smile. The music being played was cool (70's) and the help was swaying to the tunes...lol! You can sit inside or outside so take your pick, parking was convenient and there were plenty of spaces. **FYI** THIS IS A SEASONAL BUSINESS OPEN MAY THRU OCTOBER. *CASH ONLY* This is our absolute favorite stop along HWY 395. My husband will drive all the way from Boise just to eat their burgers. The old fashioned frost top vibes are still strong and the staff is always friendly. I grew up coming here as a little kid... my parents used it as motivation to behave on long road trips if we wanted to eat at the Frosty. It was sold for a time period but it is now back in the hands of the original owner from my childhood and just how I remembered it, if not better. This is a perfect place to stop and stretch your legs! They also have THE CLEANEST bathrooms you will find on this route. There is a nice grass area with picnic tables to eat at or about 4-5 small tables with chairs inside if you need to cool off in the A/C. Be prepared, there is always a line but the service is quick and wait times aren't too long (totally worth the wait). We've tried nearly everything on the menu but our go to favorite is the cheeseburger (my husband gets a double) with the AMAZING crinkle fries and a milkshake (I like both chocolate & strawberry but my daughter goes for a vanilla malt). We usually eat here more than once per trip and my second meal I usually get the chicken strips with fries. It was my favorite as a picky kid and I still enjoy it over a cheeseburger some days. If you're into dipped ice cream cones this is a MUST... they have both chocolate and peanut butter dipped. I've read some of the reviews complaining about pricing but in my opinion its worth EVERY PENNY for the ambience, cleanliness and quality of food and service. Great pitstop for some solid burgers and soft serve ice cream if you're traveling between LA and Mammoth! My wife and I got exactly those on our way up to our friend's wedding and they hit the spot. Fresh buns and 4 oz patties with the usual lettuce, onions tomato and sauce. Both the hamburger and cheeseburger with a little under $6 each. We liked their malts then so when we were back in the area and saw they were open, we had to stop by again. On our way home from Mammoth in the 105 degree weather in a no a/c vehicle... you bet we couldn't wait to stop by here. You can't miss this little red shack on the side of the road. Major small town vibes. You walk in and there's two windows you can order from and a separate one for pick up. There are about 4 little round tables with chairs for seating inside. Additional bench seating outside but there is A/C inside! We ordered a chocolate malt, a strawberry malt, and a double cheeseburger - which came to about $20. A little too pricey for what your typical roadside burger joint would charge. The malts were good, the strawberry one had actually bits of real strawberry. The burger was okay. The workers were friendly. Service was fast. Probably saved us from the heat. I'd stop here again when in the area - just wish it wasn't as expensive. read more

My family just wanted cheeseburgers and this was right down the road from our hotel. The food was delicious. I think the burger buns were brioche because my husband finished it all and he always leaves the bread behind at any burger joint. My kids loved their ice cream cones and strawberry milkshake. Awesome pitstop on your way back from exploring the Eastern Sierras. We stopped here to pick up a well-deserved milkshake after a backpacking trip. Frosty Chalet has a small parking lot but plenty of street parking. They are cash only so dig under your car seats for change. They offer a wide variety of milkshakes with the option to have them malted (definitely say yes). My favorite was the chocolate malted milkshake. They were under $10 per shake and super filling. You could probably split one if you both want the same flavor. If I happen to pass through this area again, I'll definitely make a pitstop at Frosty Chalet. read more

We stopped here while travelling through this cute town. It was a bit pricey - $15 for 2 ice creams and a shake. The kids loved the ice creams. The shake was okay, but I ordered a normal strawberry shake and got a malt instead. I'm not a fan of malts, so that was a disappointment. Our group has been stopping here for over 20 years and look forward for the treat on our way home from spending the weekend outdoors. It's always been a treat we look forward to but unfortunately not any more. Prices have shot up and the food has taken a down turn. One in our group loves burgers, orders them almost exclusively, but was disappointed in the burgers here. I had the chocolate shake and it was unfortunately flavorless. Another in our group said the same. We don't know what happened but the quality isn't there anymore and the prices are way high for what you get. The few times I've driven by, I've been wanting to come here! I actually thought they only served ice cream! It was closing time when we got inside, just in time! The lady informed us that only ice cream was available. The inside is like sitting in an air-conditioned sunroom/patio. It might seat around 15-20 people? There is additional seating outside. I thought they served up multiple flavors of ice cream scoops. Wrong. I believe they have vanilla ice cream for their banana splits. They have a soft-serve machine with chocolate, vanilla, and swirl. We got soft-serve ice cream. I got a swirl ice cream with a peanut butter dip. It was good, but since it was still hot out, it began to melt faster than I could eat it!! They do serve up an array of cooked foods like burgers, dogs, fries, onion rings and more! If you decide to stop for a meal + ice cream, this is a good option!
