Cowboy Coffee Truck in Independence, California.
    Gary G.

Jeff is the best and showed my wife and I much hospitality and happiness to find good people on the road traveling through the East Sierrs of California. Recommend this stop as a must for some human refreshment.

My wife and I stop by Cowboy Coffee everytime we drive through Independence ... great coffee, awesome service, and peaceful ambiance. Don't miss it !!!

Perfect spot to stop for caffeine. Lovely man who owns and operates the coffee shop. There is some seating, but no restroom if that is your main reason to stop.

Must stop on the way to mammoth. Great coffee and the vibe is just right! Nice spot and convo

    Hot vanilla latte

I believe I was his first customer of the day! I was very impressed with the coffee. Very hot, perfect for this cold weather. My vanilla latte was definitely better than what I would've got a chain coffee spot. Will stop again when on my way to Mammoth.

This is my 2nd time at cowboy coffee! Came last year on our way to Tom's place and again coming back from Mammoth. Such an amazing gem of a spot. You can tell the owner really provided. quality coffee and conversation. Super nice and will definitely be back. We got about 5 drinks total and they were fantastic. Thank you!

delicious coffee and soda - and Jeff the owner was so nice and friendly ! definitely worth the stop

Very nice man that runs this coffee stop! Cool area tucked into the trees in a quiet neighborhood in Independence. A nice stop for a caffeine dose before continuing on the 395!

Anyone not giving Cowboy Coffee 5 starts is out of their minds. This is the type of small business that we need more of. Beautiful setting, kind service, private ownership. Called ahead to make sure that the business was open early on a Sunday morning. Quickly answered and assured us he was! If you're passing through, skip Starsucks and make a stop here. You'll be very happy you did!

Pleasant seating outside under big shade trees with views of the mountains

I recently tried Cowboy coffee and it was a delightful experience. He opens early which it was a plus, especially around this area.

The ones tucked away on a street corner or…read morehidden along a U.S. highway, where you hesitate for a moment before deciding whether to stop? Then you give them a chance and end up completely blown away. Glenn's Taqueria is definitely one of those places for me. About 4-5 years ago, I was driving from Reno, Nevada, to Los Angeles via US-395. Since there aren't many places to stop along that route, we pulled over at Glenn's food truck because it had a large shoulder area where we could park safely. We ordered a few tacos, and they were so good that I immediately ordered burritos to take with me. Later that night, after eating those burritos, my only regret was not ordering a few more. Ever since then, I've looked forward to driving this route again just so I could stop here. Today, as I left Reno heading toward Los Angeles, I already knew Glenn's Taqueria would be one of my stops. As soon as I pulled over, five other cars arrived as well, and the place suddenly got very busy. Despite the rush, Glenn handled everything quickly and efficiently. I ordered beef and chicken tacos to eat on the spot, along with beef and chicken burritos for later that night and the next morning. Just like I remembered, everything was delicious. I can't wait to come back again. This place absolutely deserves 5 stars, and I'm not surprised to see that nearly 100 other people felt the same way.

There are stretches of Highway 395 that seem to run through the very soul of California--wind-swept…read morevalleys, snow-capped sierras, and forgotten gas stations with faded signage and stories to match. I've driven this road more times than I can count--always in a hurry to reach June Lake, Mammoth, or somewhere that sounds like a destination. And each time, I pass the same towns, the same reservations, the same hand-painted signs, barely noticed as they blur past my window. But today... today was different. Somewhere near Fort Independence, the kind of place most maps barely nod to, a sign caught my eye: "Indian Tacos." Nothing fancy. Just those two words, painted with purpose. As a member of a tribe myself, I pulled over. Not just out of curiosity, but a sense of kinship--and hunger. Mostly hunger. The setup? A weathered travel trailer, charming in its honesty, not trying to be something it's not. I approached with an open heart and a growling stomach. A kind man greeted me with a smile and said the words that every road-weary traveler longs to hear: "I make the fry bread fresh." What followed was nothing short of a spiritual experience. The Indian Taco was a masterpiece: pillowy-soft fry bread that could bring a tear to your eye, topped with perfectly seasoned meat, crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and fresh salsa that tasted like it had been made that very morning--because it probably was. I told my friends. They grimaced. "You ate what from where?" they asked, horrified at the idea of eating from a rundown trailer on the side of a reservation road. But that's the difference between us. Some people need Michelin stars to validate a meal. I just need fresh fry bread and someone who knows what they're doing. Kumazaa Nobi, tucked away on the Fort Independence Indian Reservation, isn't a stop--it's a discovery. A reminder that the most unforgettable meals don't come with white tablecloths or curated playlists. They come with heart, heritage, and a good dose of adventure. Next time you're on 395, don't blink. Don't rush. Stop. Eat. Say thank you. You'll be better for it.

My friend and I both ordered summer roll (pork and lettuce wrapped in rice paper) and spring rolls (shrimp and lettuce wrapped in rice paper) at $12 for 4 rolls. The Vietnamese owner lady was very nice and let us order them as a mixture of 2 spring rolls and 2 summer rolls as one order. Freshly made to order. They look and taste very "home made", also on the smaller side compared to what I'm used to (lots of Vietnamese restaurants near where I live), and these rolls do not come with rice noodles as many others I'm used to. All that aside, we took our very first bite a few hours later and my friend immediately felt stands of hard thin strings in her mouth, and spitting out SEVERAL STRANDS of short hair, which is not the same color as her own long hair. Shocking. Very shocking. My rolls were just fine with no foreign substances, however the more we eat the more we are getting grossed out from the encounter...she didn't finish eating that roll with hair in it and continue to eat 2 out of the 3 rolls left and so did I, since we were both very hungry and it was our only food option during the long journey, but the whole time we were getting more and more grossed out and none of us ate the 4th last roll in our order. Payment: She accepts credit card or Venmo, but any other form of payment besides cash would be an extra dollar of up charge. Instead of paying $13 for a $12 item, we decided to scramble for cash to pay her. Location: One of three food trucks located in a dirt road parking lot with active large and live mosquitoes flying around attacking us while we order food and dine. A Mexican taco truck each to the left and right side of this Vietnamese food truck. Other: This lady owner says she's had her business here for 5 years now. Had wanted to try several items on the menu but already made a purchase with the taco truck to its right. Perhaps it's a good thing, because the sanitary and hygiene issue here is questionable. I hope she starts to wear a hair net when she preps food. I mean, I understand we all shred hair daily and she must of been working hard to chop the veggies and hand roll each spring roll...but we really don't need that evidence in the form of strands of hair in our food...

The banh mi was definitely the better option. I do recommend this place either way if you're craving Vietnamese :)
