Double bacon cheeseburger. Look how big it is! Must have!
    Jonathon Q.

Any time, ANY TIME, you're at the Whitney portal, you need to visit. Not only can you get unique souvenirs after completing your Whitney hike, the food here is really good. I was really impressed with their portion size and French fries. Some of the best French fries I've ever had. This isn't the post 20 mile hike hunger talking either. I ordered the double bacon cheeseburger and couldn't even finish it. I'm used to "bulking season" eating and I still couldn't finish it. Also, the store owners/staff are all very helpful and friendly. Ask Doug at the store about mountain conditions or stories. He used to be a surveyor and has summited Whitney 200+ times because that's just what his job was back in the day. Now he runs the shop and kitchen and helps anyone who has a question or needs some wisdom. Even if you're not hungry, stop by and say hello to them!

This Yelp listing is for the Whitney Portal Store located at the Mount Whitney trailhead (versus the listing for the hotel & hostel located in downtown Lone Pine). This store/restaurant is a fantastic place to start or end your hike into the Whitney Zone. They have a breakfast and lunch/dinner menu available (I hope there will be more veggie options in the future..) and seating mostly outside to enjoy your meal. The store is filled with all sorts of things needed for hiking/backpacking/climbing so if you forgot something this is the place to stop before embarking on your adventure. They also sell books/maps of the area and Mt Whitney memorabilia (t-shirts, hats, etc.). There are also laundry services offered here. It's nice to have this store so perfectly located at the trailhead, saving a drive back to town.

I wanted to buy more but the lady behind the counter had an attitude and I was not sure why. I'm sure she wasn't aware of her demeanor but it was very unwelcoming and condescending. She also couldn't answer any of the questions I had about the crystals. I wanted to know what the stone my worry stones were made out of but she was unsure. I had a few other questions too but she had no answers to any of them. I also did not like how she spoke badly of the workers in the Alabama Hills Cafe. That left a bad impression on me. I also paid two visits to this shop hoping she was just having a bad day but both days were the same. I appreciated their set-up to keep people 6 feet apart. There were also signs on the door stating to use hand sanitizer and to wear a mask. Overall, I probably wouldn't return due to the customer service. However, their products are reasonably priced. Pay a visit if you're in the area and don't care for good customer service. Their shop is clean.

(This was around the time of the whole covid thing.) I noticed that the man working behind the counter was not wearing a mask, and the store was completely empty, not a soul in the store. So, since the guy working there didn't seem concerned about wearing a mask, and the store was completely empty of other customers, we did not put on our masks either. Well, a little while later, this crabby lady that works there walked up to me and my wife and somewhat angrily asked us to put on our masks, even though the store was completely empty and she was at least 15 feet away from us. So, we put on our masks right away. Then, I just tried to nicely explain to her why we didn't have our masks on, telling her that when we walked in we saw a guy working at the cash register not wearing one so we assumed it wasn't a big deal. Then she YELLED "he is the owner!, and "you assumed?!". Then she yelled "can I help you?!, can I help you?!" . Then she started hovering over my wife as if to make sure she wasn't stealing anything. I'm sure this crabby old wench is driving customers away. She has no business working in a retail environment dealing with customers with a horrible attitude like that. We were about to stock up on a bunch of souvenirs, but walked out after we were treated like such crap for no good reason. There are several other little mom and pop shops across the street that sell much of the same things this place does, and for less money. This place is overpriced too! Go to one of those places instead, the staff are much nicer too.

They carry detailed maps and souvenirs for purchase, and there are rangers on site who are available to answer any questions that you may have in regards to trails and weather conditions. I stopped here before attempting to hike from Whitney Portal to Lone Pine Lake. The rangers let me know that there would be too much snow and that a snow storm was brewing in Whitney Portal and that they didn't advise anyone to hike there at that time. They encouraged me to explore the Alabama Hills instead which I happily ended up doing. I was very grateful that stopped there first because it would have been scary to get stuck in the snow and/or snow storm up in Whitney Portal. You can also acquire Mount Whitney and hiking permits here. There are restrooms on site but they weren't open at the time that I was there, so they had portable restrooms right outside. There's a few small exhibits that you can check out as well if you have time. The rangers were very helpful and I will definitely stop by again during a different time of the year before heading to Whitney Portal.

The visitor center was a welcome respite with working and open restrooms (clean!), and the visitor center in full swing. In this center, there is a desk with topographical maps and a park ranger available to answer questions. I had a few and the ranger patiently and fully answered every question I had...once again proving why National Park staff are the best! There is a really nice but small gift show (I'm thinking it is run by the conservancy, but I didn't really pay attention. Lovely mugs, stuffed animals (called stuffies if you're Gen A), socks, beanie hats, earrings and many books. Beyond the desk and gift show, there's a wonderful space to watch educational videos and learn more about the area, and a hands-on museum for kids of all ages to teach you about the history and nature of the area. My child loved the brass statues of animals, and made me pet every single one before we left. Make sure you head all the way to the back--there's an activity room that has an amazing mural. Take your time and see how many animals you can spot--pika, yellow bellied marmot, mountain lion, black bear, woodpecker, rattlesnake, frog, ringtail and so many more...that you may see when you are out exploring the park. There is more than enough parking....well for today anyways. I've been here in the summer when parking is hard to find. Across the way, there's the official park gift shop, a restaurant (fairly newly refurbished but closed for the winter), a post office, and a general store with basic camping supplies, food, snacks, and a few other items. If you are entering the Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Park from Hwy 180, or if you've driven up from the southern part of this tri-park system, this is a really good place to stretch your legs, learn a little, stock up on supplies, and grab a snack. 5 stars!
