Double bacon cheeseburger. Look how big it is! Must have!
    Jonathon Q.

Any time, ANY TIME, you're at the Whitney portal, you need to visit. Not only can you get unique souvenirs after completing your Whitney hike, the food here is really good. I was really impressed with their portion size and French fries. Some of the best French fries I've ever had. This isn't the post 20 mile hike hunger talking either. I ordered the double bacon cheeseburger and couldn't even finish it. I'm used to "bulking season" eating and I still couldn't finish it. Also, the store owners/staff are all very helpful and friendly. Ask Doug at the store about mountain conditions or stories. He used to be a surveyor and has summited Whitney 200+ times because that's just what his job was back in the day. Now he runs the shop and kitchen and helps anyone who has a question or needs some wisdom. Even if you're not hungry, stop by and say hello to them!

This Yelp listing is for the Whitney Portal Store located at the Mount Whitney trailhead (versus the listing for the hotel & hostel located in downtown Lone Pine). This store/restaurant is a fantastic place to start or end your hike into the Whitney Zone. They have a breakfast and lunch/dinner menu available (I hope there will be more veggie options in the future..) and seating mostly outside to enjoy your meal. The store is filled with all sorts of things needed for hiking/backpacking/climbing so if you forgot something this is the place to stop before embarking on your adventure. They also sell books/maps of the area and Mt Whitney memorabilia (t-shirts, hats, etc.). There are also laundry services offered here. It's nice to have this store so perfectly located at the trailhead, saving a drive back to town.

The Rock/Rock Hound business has gotten tougher over the decades. When gasoline was 25 cents a gallon, camping the way for families to stay outdoors, a lingering interest in wealth from stone and support for science from kindergarten to graduate school, it was fun and cool to search remote areas for interesting stones, have a rock/geology club and shows for selling the raw and processed finds. LPR&G surfed the trends. You will still find bins of polished stones for excited children. I wanted to buy more but the lady behind the counter had an attitude and I was not sure why. I'm sure she wasn't aware of her demeanor but it was very unwelcoming and condescending. She also couldn't answer any of the questions I had about the crystals. I wanted to know what the stone my worry stones were made out of but she was unsure. I had a few other questions too but she had no answers to any of them. I also did not like how she spoke badly of the workers in the Alabama Hills Cafe. That left a bad impression on me. I also paid two visits to this shop hoping she was just having a bad day but both days were the same. I appreciated their set-up to keep people 6 feet apart. There were also signs on the door stating to use hand sanitizer and to wear a mask. Overall, I probably wouldn't return due to the customer service. However, their products are reasonably priced. Pay a visit if you're in the area and don't care for good customer service. Their shop is clean.

These go all the way north to Mono Lake, east to Death Valley, and other fascinating areas. There's a giant 3D map of the dramatic mountain ranges and valleys, that puts everything into much clearer context. There's a staffed information desk, and a well-stocked gift shop with all manner of National Park and nature gear. I was able to pick up a Mt Whitney edition from my favorite brand of outdoor-proof maps! My favorite part is the huge viewing alcove on the west end of the building. It frames Mt Whitney and the other stunning peaks in the area, and illustrates which peak is which, to get your bearings. It's a wonderful spot to sit indoors out of the heat (my visit was at the end of June) but still enjoy a beautiful view of the the Eastern Sierras. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I even got good local lunch advice. The grounds include lovely trees and fields, large and clean restrooms, and a native plant interpretive garden. If you're in the area and are curious to learn more about the stunning scenery all around you, this visitor center is definitely worth a stop.

The visitor center was a welcome respite with working and open restrooms (clean!), and the visitor center in full swing. In this center, there is a desk with topographical maps and a park ranger available to answer questions. I had a few and the ranger patiently and fully answered every question I had...once again proving why National Park staff are the best! There is a really nice but small gift show (I'm thinking it is run by the conservancy, but I didn't really pay attention. Lovely mugs, stuffed animals (called stuffies if you're Gen A), socks, beanie hats, earrings and many books. Beyond the desk and gift show, there's a wonderful space to watch educational videos and learn more about the area, and a hands-on museum for kids of all ages to teach you about the history and nature of the area. My child loved the brass statues of animals, and made me pet every single one before we left. Make sure you head all the way to the back--there's an activity room that has an amazing mural. Take your time and see how many animals you can spot--pika, yellow bellied marmot, mountain lion, black bear, woodpecker, rattlesnake, frog, ringtail and so many more...that you may see when you are out exploring the park. There is more than enough parking....well for today anyways. I've been here in the summer when parking is hard to find. Across the way, there's the official park gift shop, a restaurant (fairly newly refurbished but closed for the winter), a post office, and a general store with basic camping supplies, food, snacks, and a few other items. If you are entering the Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Park from Hwy 180, or if you've driven up from the southern part of this tri-park system, this is a really good place to stretch your legs, learn a little, stock up on supplies, and grab a snack. 5 stars!
