This is the first time I got a custom cake from Frost off of Popular in Memphis and it will be the last. Never have I paid so much money for a cake to look this elementary. My request was for it to look as close to the reference as possible and to even leave space in the middle of the cake so I can put candles in the middle and even that was missed. I am absolutely disappointed in how this cake turned out but now I understand why the cake had to be paid in full when I made the request because if I had known this is how the cake would turn out I would not have finished paying for it. This is also the first bakery I've been to where the payment had to be paid in full when the request was made. The others I've been to have been half payments, one when the request is made, and the second when I picked the cake up. A basic cake they make in store looks better than this custom one I paid almost 150 for. It doesn't even look close to what I asked for. I am so embarrassed to have to bring this to my sisters birthday party but I've paid too much to not bring it so I hope at the very least it tastes good. The cake designer who made my cake needs to either get help with decorating or needs to be considered to be replaced. Angry, embarrassed, shocked, disappointed are all too weak to describe how pissed off I am that I went to this bakery to get a cake I had requested for two weeks in advance for the birthday. We met with the Wedding and Special Events Coordinator and she offered us a tasting of their vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate mini cupcakes and she reviewed the basic options and pricing structure. We found the consultation organized and very informative. However, when she mentioned that they start wedding cakes a few days in advance of the wedding day and freeze them, I knew that I wouldn't be using them. We were looking for a fresh cake for the day. We have had Frost cupcakes and loved them in the past. In fact, my sister had their cupcakes at one of her wedding receptions. So I ended up doing the same thing, getting the mini cupcakes for a small reception that we had and I used another company for my cake for the main reception. We recently ordered ten dozen mini cupcakes and they were so moist and delicious. The flavors at Frost really pop and I love that they use real strawberries. Everyone commented on how moist and rich the cake was. It's good to note that you should leave the cake out for at least 2-3 hours after being refrigerated so it gets the right consistency, otherwise it will be a little hard to slice. I thought is was something in between preventing me from cutting through so I cut it a different way to see and noticed I was cutting a COLD CAKE. It was also a VERY VERY DENSE cake. All of my guest stated the cake was cold but frosting was good and would take their crumbled slices home to thaw out. I knew I was going to make a visit to Frost today. I went in and asked to speak to the manager her name was Marika. I told her about my complaint and told her that I don't just purchase cake's because of how they're designed but also by the taste and texture. She informed me that I was supposed to serve my custom cake 4-6 hours later. I informed her that I was well aware of the instructions of the cakes that come out that freezer box and that the cashiers also inform customers when to serve those cakes, however, I had a custom cake and if I had not already known from previous custom orders that I have purchased that there is a difference between the freezer box cakes and custom cakes then I would have not be speaking with her today. I placed my order over a month ago, my pick up date was on the date of my event, the store opens at 11 on Sundays and my event started at 2pm and it was a kids 3hr event so was I suppose to tell the kids to come back in 3 more hours to get some cake??? My daughter didn't even want any of her birthday cake cause she said it was too hard. My husband loves cake. Now on to our review of our two slices of cakes we had purchased. It does leave a funny aftertaste. Red Velvet Cake: it was a moist cake with a cream cheese frosting. The red velvet is not as pronounced as I would have imagined. The cream cheese frosting was nothing magical. We had an issue trying to eat it because it kept crumbling off our fork. I think is was a deep color red because of the food coloring. Lemon cake: the host said it was made with real lemon juice and zest but I can't really taste the lemon in it. The cake was moist but again, crumbled off my fork, making it messy to eat. I would have liked a more lemon flavor profile. It's a cream cheese frosting as well, with lemon flavor. Buttercream would be a better choice in my opinion but I don't own a cupcake shop, I just find places to eat at when I travel :-) Probably would try the cupcake next time. read more
