Toronto-Paddington 9am-9pm. With a room at the Paddington Hilton we ventured out for a bite to eat. A perfect late evening dinner was had at The Frontline Club. Crispy duck salad with chili and lime was perfection, baked aubergine with Cote de Rhône, courgette fries in the side. You can't do this route better! Apparently very well known for fish & chips in the area around Paddington Station. And deservedly so, they were excellent. Service (at least the night we were there) was a bit lacking. Our waitress wasn't very helpful, not friendly and we had to flag her down when we needed something because she didn't seem to care about checking on us. I recently dined here last week and I am a fan! It's a romantic and classic restaurant. It has booth seating along the walls. Their decor is very classic with historic portraits lining their walls. The lighting is dimmed. The size of the restaurant is enough to seat about 30 to 40 patrons. I came with a huge group and we got to choose from a special menu. Three course meal for £25. They served us bread with butter before we ordered. I ordered: Appetizer: Minted Pea Soup & Ham Hock Croquettes Main Course: Roast Chicken with Garlic Mash & Chanterelles Dessert: Raspberry & White Chocolate Pudding with White Chocolate Ice Cream Drink: Appletini The soup came out very hot and I had to wait for it to cool a bit before eating. It was served in a very antique-like container. The soup was served with three ham hock croquettes . In an American's mind, these look like miniature croissants with ham inside or pigs in a blanket. The main course was my favorite part of the meal! The chicken was so succulent and it made it easy for me to cut into bit sized pieces. The brown and light sauce that was served with it accompanied it very well. The garlic mash was amazing. The only part of this dish that I did not eat was the chanterelles because I have never seen anything like it. I believe it is a type of vegetable. The dessert was okay. I was more excited about the ice cream than the pudding. I'm not a big fan of raspberry. I was expecting pudding, but it was actually more like a muffin stuffed with raspberries. This "muffin" was drizzled with white chocolate sauce served with vanilla ice cream. My appletini was superb. I loved it and wanted to order more. The Appletini was not part of the three course meal deal, but it just cost £7.50. Overall, if I'm ever in the area again, I would definitely visit it again. Frontline is a great place for the best of independant journalism. They hold talks & screenings. The audience can participate in discussions and debates too. There is also a really nice restaurant there serving British type cuisine. The great thing is that you don't need to be a journalist or even be in the industry - it's open to the public - who are interested in such topics. Prices are reasonable too (around £10 for a screening). Worth checking out if this is your thing! read more

Headline: a bit of British Foodie Heaven Location: less than a half mile from Paddington station, so sorry if I seem a little raving on this place. It's good - really good. The walls are adorned with photographs that are iconic - the tiananmen square photo showing a guy standing in front of tanks; st Paul's cathedral during the London bombings; and others. It's a history of journalistic photography. White table cloths and a nice quiet interior give this place class. The food was great as well. The chef sources from their own farm daily! And the stuff you can't get on a farm tastes equally fresh. I'm starved of seafood, so I opted for the special grilled skate with mashed potatoes, which was well prepared (although I did not like the excess of bones). The mashed potatoes were silky and buttery. For dessert, try the warm pistachio pudding with dark chocolate sauce and ice cream - simply divine. If you happen to be staying in this part of town, make a point of going here. read more

Went here on a busy Friday night. Tucked away from the Main Street very close to paddington this is a very nice yet affordable place for great food. Started with the chicken on potatoes. Not expecting much but the flavors exploded in my mouth. By far the best chicken I have had. The dessert of bread pudding was flavorful as well. Will have to come back soon. read more

If you're interested in the cutting edge of journalism, the Frontline Club is a good place to add to your diary. It was set up by reporters and cameramen in memory of journalists who died in action. You don't have to have seen the world's conflict zones to get on the mailing list of media-focused talks and debates, however. Most events cost £10 (but are free to members) but there tend to be free film screenings on Sunday afternoons. There's a great bar - lots of wood - with interesting memorabilia along the walls. The restaurant downstairs offers a discount to members. This is a cool place, handily close to Paddington Station. read more

Very reasonably priced regular menu, with some of the best food I've had in London. The early bird dining specials are extremely cheap for the quality and quantity of food, but be aware that you need to vacate your table by seven. I found that a bit unusual, as generally as long as you're seated before seven you're included in the early bird specials. The wine selection is decent, and prices are also average. The service is good. The flavors are tasty, health and farm-fresh, and the desserts are really good. Excellent quality meats, that are apparently all small farm raised. This is one of the few places I loom forward to trying again on my next London trip. read more

We really enjoyed our lunch here. My wife had the mushroom risotto which she just loved. I had the Hereford rib steak which was perfectly cooked. Service was good, but not 100% perfect. Not a big deal, still a 5 star experience. Great cup of coffee here too. read more

A pleasant, buzzy venue - great, knowledgeable, and attentive staff. I'm not wholly convinced about the claimed journalistic credentials; Paddington is a long way from Fleet Street, and a career broadsheet journalist of my acquaintance ( 40 years in the biz) claimed never to have heard of it. Don't let that put you off, however - artifice aside, this is comfortably one of the best places to eat should you find yourself in this end of town, journo or no. read more

This is one of those restaurants that I've passed by a million and one times but have never even thought to go into nor try out. I'm in a running group in London that runs literally right by this restaurant every Saturday morning. So, when a visiting friend from college and his wife were coming into town and staying in the neighborhood, they decided to choose to reserve a table at Frontline. The decor is simple, but a little dated, but the service was good, attentive and the staff really knowledgable. I was a little late for dinner, because I had to bike from Old Street to here, but had to run right to the restrooms downstairs to freshen up (and check out the facilities before I checked out the food). Anyway, we start with a bit of bread and some cocktails. The bread was not warm nor cold, and not quite toasted, which left a slight distaste in my opinion. The cocktails were well made, but nothing to write home about. I ordered the hanger steak with black pepper sauce and a cauliflower puree along with a green salad on the side. The hanger steak was cooked to perfection, but the pepper sauce a little runny and not spicy enough. However, the cauliflower puree made up for the loss of flavor with the steak. The green side salad was green, but really otherwise, rather blah for a top rated restaurant touting modern British cuisine. I think a place like this used to be at the top end of the ever-improving modern British cuisine revolution, where the quality was amazing in comparison to what used to be around the area and what used to be called British cuisine. However, a growing number of restaurants have very quickly surpassed this in quality, price and innovation. I'd say if you were to be in the general vicinity, I'd take a short walk across Edgware Road to Vinoteca for a wider range of wines, better steak and sauce and a much more innovative salad selection. 3.5* (and sadly rounded down because I really couldn't justify 4*). I'd come back to Frontline if I had friends who were staying in the area and couldn't / didn't want to venture across the great schism that is Edgware Road. read more

Great find near work, just annoyed I didn't go sooner. The dishes were simple and delicious, with most of the vegetables and meat direct from their farm. We (2) had 2 courses for £15, great bottle of wine and it came to £55 with service. The room is interesting, with photos from important times in history. I understand that some of the money from the restaurant goes towards, Frontline Charitable Trust, set up to promote independent journalism and provide training in the safety and health of journalists and other media workers in areas of conflict. I can't remember the last time I ate Brawn! That combined with pickled marrow, and followed by fish pie and curly kale was a real surprise in an area like Paddington, just as the reviewer above said! Lovely photographs on the walls, huge windows and enormous lampshades, a very friendly waiter (in a nice way) and a good looking menu. The Brawn was £6.00 the fish pie £15.00 and the half bottle of red £9.00. I was given a 12.5% service charge on top, which seems the norm these days, but I didn't quibble. read more

The joke here is that three of us went to dinner, but my daughter wasn't hungry and didn't order. Result: she had 2nd best meal; my fish and chips were very good (with mashed peas) but my wife's risotto was inedible. Just awful. Waiter asked if there was something wrong with it, and she said it was mushy and tasteless --- and he nodded. Also the IPA beef is more like a weak lager. Wait staff unfriendly, but it is a cool venue. read more

We went here for dinner and had a very enjoyable experience. The inside has a very relaxing atmosphere and even though there was quite a few people still seemed very private with many tables for 2. The service was very good from the time we walked in till we departed. Very good staff! The food was excellent . We had Seared scallops, pea purée & crispy bacon & the tiger prawn starters. For our mains we had Roast rump of lamb, sorrel pearl barley & pickled fennel and Slow cooked feather blade of beef, artichoke & crushed new potatoes. All was very good and they had a great wine list! Definitely a spot I would return! read more

Paddington is not exactly where you would think that you can find a great place to go have lunch or dinner until you discover The Frontline Club. It is a very unusual restaurant, being both a restaurant open to everyone and a journalists' club (more precisely an "independent" journalist network) with lots of great frontline reporters' pictures on the wall. It has a New Yorkisk/Tribeca feel to it with brick walls and big windows. The prices for this mainly traditionnal British food are quite reasonnable and the wine list is really good (and affordable as the mark-up on wine seems lower than usual). And finally this is a great place for a Sunday roast (all kinds of roasts available). definitely worth trying, with a different vibe and somehow exotic. read more

This is a very nice find near Paddington Station. We decided to try this place for dinner. We did not have a reservation but were able to be seated immediately (though whoever say is seemed perturbed we didn't make a reservation ahead of time). The decor is simple and clean. The seating is a little crowded like so many other places in this city. The food was great. The scallops we ordered were cooked and seasoned perfectly, the lamb (two different cuts) was cooked perfectly and seasoned well with attractive plating. I asked the server to pair a wine with my dish and she was eager to help and pored well. The portions are quite small though (especially for the price). I've eaten at many high end restaurants with smaller portions and higher prices, but somehow this one didn't seem quite worth the markup. Don't get me wrong, It was definitely good but maybe a few dollars over what it should have been. Regardless we enjoyed our meal and left with relatively prompt and friendly service. read more

Elegant, warm welcome, terrific negroni, less than fresh bread and butter. Olive plate simple green olive no oil, no pit no variety. They do their own sparkling water, which I find nice, however large bottle too much for 1 person. I chose to order food in courses and glad I did. I ordered the crispy duck salad. I was planning on ordering the the vegetable Wellington, followed by dessert and espresso, but after being served the salad decided to wander to another choice of restaurant. The crispy duck was underwhelming. The duck was not crispy and there was a very small amount of it. I'm guessing about 50 grams of duck. Good flavor in the vegetable and lime, but what I found peculiar is that the chef chose for the duck to "hide" under the vegetables. I had to search for it and when I did I came up short. Staff was accommodating, barkeep well trained, food fell a bit short. If the title of the dish is duck and the chef has duck in the main entree section of the menu, then please give the guest a nice amount of duck for £11. Maybe a bit less vegetable, but it really did make this guest wander off into the night for dinner. I don't wish to give less than 3 stars in hopes not to have a negative impact, but wanted to share my experience. read more

The Frontline Club restaurant (usually but not always open to the public) serves impeccably prepared British classics with some international flavours. The prices are average for London, but the high quality of the food makes it more worth it than most places. It also has an impressive wine list. read more

A bit rough, on the whole. Noisy but quite interesting place, nasty part of town. Notably good and cheap wine list. But the food ... plentiful but boring and in a couple of cases poor. Great starter of shredded pork and black pudding and leaves in a mayonaissey dressing. Dry old steak and those annoying chips which, in proclaiming that they are cut from a potato rather than emptied out form a freezer bag, are TOO chunky. In fact they're saute potatoes done in a deep fryer. Not very nice spring greens. Extremely poor puddings, overpriced and minuscule. So all in all, hit and miss. Best place around, but that's not saying much. read more

£68 per person for a micro starter (£12), micro main (£19) and dessert with 2 bottle of wine for 6 people. The "main" was composed by 2 tiny pieces of lamb, nothing special. If you like to go to a restaurant to eat, this is not the place for you. The food quality does not not justify such a high price. And I keep ask myself why pretentious restaurants like this should serve such a small portions. Is there any intrinsic reason? read more

I must have eaten at this place a dozen times. My most recent visit was just a few days back and even though I turned up at 10pm on a Tuesday night, I was served an excellent lamb rump. One of the few places where I have never been disappointed by a course. The menu is always diverse and makes picking very tricky, but fear not, you can pretty much guarantee great food, a healthy portion and excellent value for money. This is a must for anyone staying near Paddington station. read more

A special place. The food is terrific, but it also has a unique buzz because of its associated club of photo journalists and folks intensely interested in foreign affairs. I am not a vegetarian, but the Vegetable Wellington was good enough to make even a carnivore reconsider. Plenty of meat dishes on the menu, but I was intrigued by this one. My husband had a crumbled pork chop, which turned out to be a variation on breaded pork cutlets. Also very good. They were full on a Tuesday night, so probably good to make reservations--it's small but beautifully decorated. Excellent service! read more

Great find near Paddington Station and the local Hilton hotels. Small, with awesome service, really welcoming staff and good food. I didn't have any trouble walking in at 8:30pm on a Sat night and getting a table. The Steak tartare was great, but with too many raw onions. I am not recommending the prawn and soft shell crab tempura, because the shrimp were diced (to make the look like more) and there were just two really tiny tempura crab legs on top. well don't go to this restaurant expecting to get the cheaper early evening and late night menu (also advertised on their website as pre- and post- event menus) We went to an event and when we requested the menu at 9.30 we were told it was off. Given that we'd already sat down and had pre-dinner drinks, we were then forced to eat of the significantly more expensive menu. The food was lovely but I was not at all impressed with this rip-off attitude. If things are not available for that menu (as they claimed to be the case) then they need to provide alternatives, not assume that diners will simply cough up for the more expensive menu. At the very least (we'd booked the table for 9.30) advise the diners when they book, especially since it's still being advertised on their website. read more
