I enjoyed the braised duck leg with carrots and smoked cod roe salad. The duck had a nice crispy skin and soft meat. The smoked cod roe salad was pleasantly surprising too, not overly dressed! I had read that Hereford served traditional British food. As an American, this stereotype means fish and chips, Shepard's pie and a possibility of bland food. This however, was none of these things. Upscale and and minimal, the menu was short and focused on game, fish and some, ah, other animal parts. We stuck with known meat items and were happy with the preparation of almost everything we ordered. We had salads and grilled asparagus to start. The asparagus was a particular highlight of the meal. I like asparagus quite a bit and this really pulled out every good flavor. The steak we had was also very good and came with a sauce, that, while enjoyed, we were not quite sure what it was. My cousin's fish came full skeleton-in, along with a plate for once it was removed. This made the fish somewhat difficult to eat, though the taste was lovely. The service was also good. The only other issue we had was that while we came for lunch, one of the items we had initially planned on ordering was already out. Note to other Americans- they do have tap water but you need to specify this is what you want. Bottled water seems to be the norm here. read more

Returning to London 5 years after living there, I felt a bit lost on the food front. Everything I knew that was good may or may not still be good... indeed, they may or may not still be there. My friend and I wanted British food so St. John first came to mind. But there are also so many other options to try...! I'm really glad we gave Hereford Road a go. Tucked on a quiet street in Notting Hill, this place was warm and cozy, a bit of a high end gastropub. As we set out for traditional British food, we decided to go all out. We got the FRIED CALF BRAIN, LAMB'S SWEETBREADS, POTTED CRAB, and DEVILED LAMB KIDNEYS. Everything was delicious. My favorite was the lamb kidneys. Every aspect of the dish was flavorful, including the veggies and the potatoes. If I could do it over again, I would cut out the potted crab so I could eat more lamb kidneys. The crab was good but didn't stand out as much as the others. Make reservations early to avoid eating a 9:30 pm dinner. It's also not the easiest place to get to, the closest tube stop being Bayswater. But it is definitely a gem off the beaten path. read more

As it was the eve of my all-important day of birth, I had some high expectations from HR, even going so far as to request a "nice table" on my OpenTable reservation form when I booked it a couple weeks prior. We walked in to discover a table tucked away on a raised portion of the restaurant (just before a staircase that led into a booth-heavy area one level below). The booths looked roomier and comfier than our tight table. When I asked the waiter if we could move down there, he said, politely "no, they're not available." (This is only worth mentioning because throughout the course of the evening, two of the booths were never touched/remained empty. We did end up discovering that our table was a pretty sweet spot because we could "see" nearly the entire restaurant from it. Not bad, but still.) My party of four ate very well (I'm uploading pics too). Whether it was fish, rabbit or something else, we all loved our meals. The only "eh" dish was the terrine. After St. John's and Arbutus' versions, I was disappointed in HR's terrine - just a bit bland and (worse) dry. But again, the rest of the meal - all of our meals - were quite divine. Our waiter (once he found out it was my bday eve) was a hoot and a holler and would often focus all of his attention to me w/ the just the right amount of sarcasm. I grew to love him, even after his refusal to give us the dang booth. He really won me over when he presented my apple cobbler with a candle in it. Cute! ... but he didn't sing. This place is brilliant, great food at a reasonable price in a classy setting. Great for a romantic night for two or dinner with friends. See if you can grab one of the cute booths along the wall across from the kitchen. We started with the spinach soup with snails. Having made spinach soup at home many times, I wondered why I never thought to put snails in it -- but that is why you go out to eat -- to be surprised and inspired. The earthy flavours of the snails and spinach were excellent together. I'd seen a BBC programme about "potted shrimp" earlier in the week, so when I saw potted crab on the menu, I had to try it. I don't know how to put this, but it was the most crab-y tasting crab I have had in a very long time. The wine list was reasonably priced by London standards -- most wines under 40 quid and main dishes under 15. Gluten-free notes: Nearly all of the menu items are naturally gluten free and they were happy to advise. read more

Hmmm tricky one the Hereford, on some points this was a knock-out restaurant, excellent relaxed service and interesting British food. The food is traditional British and I mean traditional. The menu when I went included pig's face (brawn) and oysters fresh from Essex. Now, I love my oysters and appreciate they can be a bit hit or miss, but I didn't feel great about 30 minutes or so after my half dozen. Added to that my colleague (who I will admit is a slightly gluttonous individual) who was rather ill on his way home on the tube. I don't put this down to bad oysters actually, but rather the fact that he had a rather unwise combination of brawn, oysters (this was just to start), followed by lamb, rice pudding and a cheese plate. That combination washed down with 3 glasses of wine is enough to make anyone vomit. But enough of that, I had the aforementioned oysters to start and faggots for main. Beautifully cooked and tasty. I finished with a sorbet to cleanse my palate and to settle my stomach - it either worked or I have a stomach of iron (probably the latter). Anyways, don't let my colleague's experience put you off trying this delicious slice of British cuisine. Great food, great prices (more like gastro pub than restaurant) - just be a little wary of the oysters, definitely not for the faint hearted. read more

While I appreciated the fact they did not seat us down in the main part of the restaurant because of all the big holiday lunches (this is an ongoing dilemna in my life), the view we had of the open kitchen was not what I wanted for a Friday lunch. The older of the two chefs was in a cranky mood and was yelling and screaming -- the stuff you expect to hear, but behind the doors of the restauarant. This was sort of off putting. The food was good - St. John like with very strong starters and moderate to mediocre mains. The desserts were nothing to write home about so we ordered coffees and then went off in search of something at Carluccio's in Westbourne Grove. Oh yeah, proximity to kitchen means that we kept the memory and scent of Hereford Road with us for the next few days. That was not a happy scent. read more

I live uber-close to this place and was aiming at taking my hungry bodily shell down to Alounak, but my friend and I passed by this place, thought it looked promising and decided that we'd be just like those carefree disenfranchised Shoreditch hipsters we so love to hate and have dinner without - oh Jesus- reservations here. The food was bland - it's hard to make things that are not usually bland taste bland, but this was indeed the case, and we tried four different things. Our appetizers ( duck livers and a cheesy concoction) were amateur hour, and his pheasant and my duck - both usually strong, gamey meats, were no more than slobs of game over undercooked ( severely undercooked, actually, more like pebbles on a beach undercooked) green peas and beans. Desserts was meh. Drinks were meh. I mean, no one had a Totes Vom moment or anything, and I honestly feel that the chef just had Mercury in his house or a bad Tinder date, cause this place has potential. Perhaps. I was just in London recently and a friend took me here. It's down the road from her place, and she kept telling me how good it was. Halfway through eating the Pork Belly, I had an overwhelming desire to give her a huge hug and a kiss. She's plenty cute, but that's not why... That Pork Belly was so good, it almost made cry. Everything I saw come out of the kitchen looked really great too. We had an adorable server who was super sweet and helpful walking me through the menu. Very 'NYC-ish' to me - trendy decor, good service and reasonably priced delicious food. Absolutely loved it! The menu changes daily and can be quite adventurous. We had lamb sweetbreads and calf brain to start and a beautiful pork belly and Barnsley lamb chop for mains. The mains were quite large so could have skipped the starters. Everything was delicious--- my chef husband even loved it which doesn't happen very often! Entrees ranged from £11 - £17 and starters from £5-£8. Ate here last Friday night for our anniversary dinner. Had 9:30pm reservations and when we arrived a table was waiting for us. We were seated across from the kitchen, which was great as we got to watch the chefs prepare the dishes and interact with them as well. The daily menu was varied and wonderful. We tried a range of appetizers and for dinner had the calf liver and rabbit stew. Both were incredible and very reasonably priced. The service was great and overall the dinner was fantastic for what seems like a very small, neighborhood restaurant. We'll definitely be coming back on our next trip to London would highly recommend Hereford Road to anyone with a curios palate who's willing to try new things. read more

After learning that Tom Pemberton is a co-owner of Hereford Road (i love St John's) I had to try it during my last visit of London. We were initially skeptical because upon arrival at 18:30, the place was completely empty. We started off with a chilled red wine, Grignolino D'Asti. It was almost like a rose wine, without much of a scent. Refreshing nonetheless. The starter of Duck livers with green beans and tarragon was great. The tarragon added a hint of an anise flavor which was not too overpowering. For mains, we ordered the venison and pork belly pie (meant to serve 2). The waitress initially heard us incorrectly and thought we ordered two venison dishes. When that arrived, I think it looked really good but we did want what we initially ordered so we had it sent back. The manager was really courteous about everything. Since we had to wait an extra 25 minutes, they comped our appetizer which was a nice gesture. read more

Another recommended restaurant from a friend, this one definitely did not disappoint. This was one of our first meals in London and we wanted to try a little of everything so we ordered 2 appetizers, 2 entrées, 2 desserts. The restaurant has the open kitchen concept as well as outdoor seating, which I am a fan of. The food itself was surprisingly good. For appetizers we ordered the Mussels and the sweetbreads, both delicious. The mussels were big, meaty, and full of flavor. It wasn't rubbery or overcooked. This was actually the first time Ive had sweetbreads and it was awesome. Served with parsley, capers, and a medley of other herbs that made the dish irresistible from me and and my wife. For the entree, I ordered the braised rabbit stew and the wifey ordered the pork dish. Mine was above average, hers was amazing. Although the rabbit was fall off the bone good, there werent many elements to the dish. The pork had the loin and pork belly with a crispy skin. A very simple dish but bursting with flavors. Three tables down from us, there was a party that got their plate before us and you could hear him foodgasm over his pork dish. Yes, my wife did the same. The desserts we had the Eton mess which was like a lot of whip cream and chunks of rhubarb, something you would definitely not see in the states. And I had the safe choice, the apple crumble. Both were good, mine was better. Staff is friendly, space was not cramped, and I would definitely recommend to anyone. read more

Been here once before but unfortunately couldn't get a table for dinner, next day I went back for lunch and I was one of the first in for lunch service! I chose a corner booth to sit in. Service was superb(also maybe because there went any customers yet) they have a simple menu which is great. I opted for the 2 course (£11.95) ordered a leek appetizer with a grilled mackerel. The presentation of these dishes are superb. See attached pics. The leek was great, I usually do not eat leek so it was new to me. There was a minced up egg on it which was excellent. For my main, the mackerel to my surprise a whole entire mackerel came! Good value! But it was hard for me to eat because of the little bones. A bit dry but it also has a side salad which pairs well with it. I would probably order something different next time. The service times were great I was in and out in 40 minutes. Treated myself to a latte too (£2.95). Well made, sugar cubes at the side which is much more classier than bagged sugar. ;) All in all, it was great and I would definitely come again. I heard their menus change quite a bit. And during lunch the set course lunches are a great deal. If you want a 3 course it is (£13.95) I believe. read more

In researching food options for this trip, it struck me as fascinating that some of the restaurants highlighting seasonal British food are simply named after their location. Hereford Road, Great Queen Street, etc. So it was on a Sunday evening that I found myself in this posh neighborhood, on the quite street that is Hereford Road. The restaurant is in a former butcher shop. A stack of rustic bread sat invitingly inside the huge plate glass window. Once inside, the open kitchen with gleaming white tiles said welcome like nothing else could. This is where it all happens. Opposite the kitchen is a wall-length banquette of semi-circular red leather seats with little round bistro tables. Am I at a milonga in Buenos Aires, waiting for the show to begin? The host led us down a few steps to the main dining room in the rear. There were giant red leather booths on one side, and a scattering of wood tables and chairs in the rest of the room. A humongous circular sky light dominated the middle of the room. At high noon, I cannot imagine anyone sitting underneath it like ants under a giant magnifying glass. The menu was a single sheet of paper, printed in utilitarian font, listing the day's bounty. We kicked off the evening with a bottle of Col Vetoraz Prosecco di Valdobbiadene. For starters, we had Chilled Pea & Lovage Soup, and Grilled Razor Clams, Red Onions, & Savory. The soup was a refreshing starter. Sweet creamy peas with hits of astringency from the lovage. The razor clam was my #1 favorite starter for this whole trip. They were gigantic, at least 8 inches (see pic on my profile). They were sweeter than the sweetest of squid, crab, and lobster combined. A faint smokiness from the grill, and punches of assertiveness from the red onion, herb, and heavily garlic-flavored oil. For our mains, Baked Brill, Cucumber, Kohlrabi, Brown Shrimps, and Guinea Fowl, Lentils, Sweet Corn, Foie Gras. Brill is like a turbot. In my opinion, more like a little stingray. Very tender mild flesh. Small brown shrimps seem to be de rigueur with any kind of fish preparation. The warm salad of cucumber pieces and julienned kohlrabi gave it a nice crunch. The guinea fowl was nicely roasted with crispy skin. For a split second I had a vision that I might have shot it myself earlier in the day. The ragout of lentil and corn was an interesting mix. The heartiness of lentils combined with the freshness of corn. Will definitely try this at home. For pudding, Eton Mess sounded beguiling enough. Fresh strawberries, meringue, clotted cream, all whipped together into a mess. Whatever food fight it was that gave birth to this dish, thank you boys! Why 4 stars? Utter simplicity, but not to the extreme. Very nice charming place. An ideal neighborhood restaurant. Now, how much does one of those white town houses go for? read more

The menu is very British with game animals and such... I had the 2-course set lunch which I guess is a good deal at £13. I say "I guess" because I didn't really like my food very much... Had the crispy pork (too dry?) and the braised rabbit (probably not their fault and I just don't like rabbit). I tried my sister's onglet though and that was good. Service was slow and we weren't lacking for anything in particular, but I just had the impression overall of it being a bit cold and neglectful. So it's okay, but unless price is the main concern, I would recommend Le Cafe Anglais instead which is just a few blocks away. read more

I am not a big meat eater, and having spent ten years in California, the land of salads, pork belly (and anything involving the kidneys, liver or brains of any animal) is a bit much. This is the restaurant we go to regularly as a family. This means it has to be excellent and the staff are very patient and considerate, as trying to please everyone in my family is a herculean task. Food is simple, british bistro, similar to St. John's. The bread is delicious, not a great place for vegetarians but the there is always something on the menu for them. Came here at 6pm on a Tues evening. The restaurant had just opened for the night and we were the only ones there for the first hour or so. From the outside the restaurant looks quite small but they have converted the back and made it a very trendy space that seats many. I loved the decor, there was no music playing but I can imagine the restaurant getting quite romantic on busy weekends. I ordered the ox heart to start and the pork belly for mains. My husband ordered the lamb sweetbread and pork belly also. We paired these with a bottle of Malbec (French equivalent) which I was very happy with. The knowledgeable waiter recommended the wine for us. I was a little hesitant ordering the ox heart but I was surprisingly delighted by the choice I made. I thought they over did the salt but apart from that the food was absolutely gorgeous! The pork belly came with a HUGE crackling. This was the main reason we came here and it was delicious. This restaurant has great value. We went here for lunch and just missed the express lunch (lamb shank, salad, glass of wine, coffee for £9.5). Instead me and my brother got the 3 course lunch (2 course 13.5; : course 15.5) Appetizer 1. Duck breast 5/5 Amazing! A must try. Probably the best thing we eat! 1. Fantastic value set lunches during the week and a menu that won't break the bank anyway, mean this is an incredibly neighbourhood-friendly bistrot. I love seeing unusual and/old fashioned herbs on the menu so was instantly drawn to the mussels with leek and savoury. They were well-seasoned and in a moreish buttered and wined up stock that had me using the soup spoon. The bread did not appear to be from St John Bread & Wine, however was crusty and good and perfect for mopping up juices that my spoon couldn't quite pick up. I can also recommend the onglet with chips. See now, this is great bistrot food. Thick, three-times cooked chips saw me eat the lot against my better judgement and the steak was perfectly cooked and tasty as that cut should be. An interesting and well-priced wine list is worth sampling from - there are some unusual wines in there so definitely ask to taste and to be guided. Can I eat there again tomorrow? read more

the food was good. The sticky date which another Yelp'er claimed to be excellent was not so good. Not terrible but it had very little dates and tasted strangely smokey. The service and environment was poor to unacceptable. The first ting I noticed was that the kitchen staff (Chef?) who work the grill (which is in plain sight) do not wear any sort of head covering. I find this odd. I guess in the UK it does not matter if hair or dead skin falls into your dishes. In addition to the lack of proper head attire, the head chef kept throwing his dirty pans into a metal bin on the floor which made this very annoying, very loud noise that echoed through the front seating area. I realise he is busy but when the staff give him looks of WTF are you doing you'd think he would stop. Nope! Maybe it is the norm in London, but all the staff (expect for the manager) were not friendly and borderline rude. If do end up going, sit downstairs. Having decided to eventually try a Sunday roast, I googled and found this place. Awesome. Great, not too big, with the most amazing circle window in the ceiling, not overly busy on Sunday. Attentive staff. We had wood pigeons and delicate pork both delightful. The veggies were beautifully cooked. Hot choc pudding with ice-creams made some of us smile. After a little bit of searching, we actually managed to find this restaurant: the sign isn't very obvious (or perhaps I'm just blind). Nevertheless it was definitely worth the visit. The food was good, but the dessert was definitely the main attraction. How I rejoiced when a St John alum brought the goods to my neck of the woods! And not just anyone - this is the former head chef. While not comparable to my love of St John (see my reviews for St John and St John Bread & Wine), I did find love here as well. The menu feels very St John - there's your requisite offal (sweetbreads, brains and cheeks), your fresh local veg (kale, artichoke, peas), your meaty mains (lamb, veal, chicken) and your traditional desserts (sticky date, chocolate and creme fraiche, cheese plate). I started with an exquisite smoked eel with horseradish dish that was the best I've ever had. A main of pork chop was tasty if a bit plain and my cheese plate was as good as any good British cheese plate. But I picked at my companions' food as well, and food envy kicked in for an amazing calves' liver and a melt-in-your-mouth cut of beef. I would maybe knock another half a star off if I could - huge skylight aside, something with the interior decor/atmosphere doesn't sit well with me. We liked Hereford Road but it was a bit too British for us. We did want to try what others have considered the best in British cuisine and are glad we did but probably won't be back. Our pork entree was tasty but also very fatty. My wife and I each had a pile of discarded pork debris on our plates by the end. This is probably the best restaurant with national kitchen that I recently had lunch in. They offer a set lunch menu with 2 or 3 courses from Monday to Friday which is both delicious and on a budget. Perhaps the thing that made me biggest impression was the long wine list with selected varieties and manufacturers to supplement the perfect taste of the food. Many of the dishes are not well crafted although mostly taste good and price points almost suggest that plates would be slightly more curated. my friend who lives in the hood recommended the spot. she'd hyped as a restaurant from a former member of st. john's. i was sold. we had a na early booking at 6:30 and the place was virtually dead, but 30 minutes later is was packed. we started with the lamb sweetbread, which my friend highly recommended. i had teh pork loin for my antree and i must say cooked to perfeciton. i never eat much of the pork fat because it's never tasty or satisfying to my waist line, but friends me likies the pork fat at hereford. savoury fatty goodness with the nice crunch of a perfect pork rind. mmmm mmmm good! i'll take those inches to my waistline, thank you very much. heck i even followed up with dessert and shared the poach pear with my pal. i'll be back for more eats next time i'm in town. simple, good food prepared spectacularly. read more

Came here early on a Thursday evening and the restaurant was ominously empty. However it filled up very quickly. I loved the quirky decor and the service was excellent. I had the leek vinaigrette which was an amazing dish, followed by the lamb rump, also delicious. Afterwards I had the bakewell tart; very good. The wine was very reasonably priced.
