The person taking our order was very rude and not welcoming at all. After we had ordered all of our food, we were asked if we would like to leave a tip, which we did. We later found out that gratuity had already been added beforehand "for a big group," even though there were only six of us. Because we were unaware that gratuity had already been included, we ended up leaving two tips totaling $48. This was very frustrating, but we decided to move on and enjoy our meal. Unfortunately, it then took almost 45 minutes for our food to arrive, and when it did, the order was incorrect. When we tried to explain to the staff that the food was wrong, they were not helpful and were initially unwilling to fix the issue. They brought the same incorrect food back, and we had to explain multiple times that the burger was not the one my sister had ordered. Eventually, they told us it was "only missing one ingredient." At that point, my sister was exhausted and anxious from having to explain the issue so many times, so she ultimately just ate the incorrect food. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience, especially because we were on vacation and had been looking forward to visiting. The poor customer service, unexpected gratuity, long wait, and incorrect food made the experience even more frustrating

A5 Wagyu Smash Burgers? Sign me up everyday of the week!…read more We were staying in the West Side of the island, and saw this place pop up on Yelp and knew I had to give it a try. I went all in and went with the 3x3 which in hindsight was way more than I needed. The meat is rich which means a single or 2x2 is all you need. The crisp on the smash was perfection and the bun was pillowy soft. The sauce complimented everything well. My only regret was not asking if they had Serrano peppers before I ordered bc that would've added a whole other level to an already amazing burger. $30 well spent. If you just look at the menu, you might have sticker shock, but they are using A5 meat for the burgers which is why its higher priced. Compare it to most food in the area, everything is overpriced bc it's touristy, at least at Swagyu you get a quality tasting meal. Worth every dime in my opinion. They have locations in San Diego as well, and all I could think of is how much money I'd spend if they had a spot up in the Bay. Smash burgers done right is so hard to find, if they had one in the Bay I'd be a regular here for sure.

A Maui Tradition for Over 30 Years…read more We've been coming to Hula Grill every time we visit Maui for over 30 years, and it's become a tradition we wouldn't want to miss. The view is always spectacular, the fish is consistently fresh, and their Mai Tais are still among the best on the island! We dined in the main restaurant on October 7, and overall, the service was pretty good and the food was decent, although not quite as memorable as it was 20 years ago. Unfortunately, the restaurant has become increasingly crowded over the years, which is understandable given its popularity as a tourist destination. One disappointing experience was dining in the bar area, where there's sand on the floor. During our visit last year, the area was filled with flies, which was pretty disgusting. Needless to say, we won't be dining in that section again. We've found the main restaurant to be a much better experience. Despite a few disappointments, Hula Grill remains a Maui classic for us. You can't beat the oceanfront setting, fresh fish, and excellent Mai Tais. We'll likely continue to visit on future trips, but we do hope the food and overall experience can recapture some of the magic we remember from years past.

First time in Maui, first meal after arriving. I'd tried the Hula Grill in Waikiki and thought the…read morefood was good, not wow, but this was a choice made by others in our small group, so I just went along because of the excellent location by the Whalers Village shopping center on one side, and the beach and ocean views on the other. Unfortunately, we were a bit delayed by our flight and hotel check in that we got here a bit late, after the sun had already set.....sadly, we missed that. The place was absolutely packed!.....but we had reservations, checked in, and waited about 10 minutes after our reservation time, and was then given a pretty decent table inside vs an outdoor table closer to the beach. Service was nice, friendly, and helpful.....so no complaints about that. As for the food....whilst walking to our table, we saw servers carrying trays of yummy looking fish and chips and tacos, but later found out that they were serving diners at the bar area, so these items were not available in the more "formal" Hula Grill restaurant section....bummer. Anyway, it was getting a bit late for us on California time, so we all chose to eat light...I orderd the Chilled Seafood Platter, and others in the group ordered the Grilled Fish, Roasted beets, Wok Charred Iwamoto Noodles, Seafood Poststickers, and ended everything with a huge slice of their signature Hula Pie. My Seafood Platter was served chilled with Kiawe charred sashimi grade ahi, a couple of small lobster tails, grileld and chilled jumbo shrimp cocktail, and some sides of kimchi, and wasabi. Yes, everything was very fresh and delicious, but I truly expected the portion to be much bigger, considering it's called a "Platter." Was a bit disappointed as others at our table wanted to try some of my seafood, but I had to say NO as I would be left with close to nothing to eat had I shared it. The other issue we all had was with the Lobster, Shrimp, and Scallop Potstickers. It came with a measly 5 small and flat pieces with so little stuffing that you couldn't even taste the seafood inside....even if you had put the whole thing in your mouth at once. It just need much more stuffing.....or what's the point? Whilst walking to the mens room, I walked by the kitchen and saw several plates of other dishes being put out for servers to serve to the diners......yea, the portion sizes of everything were so tiny!!! This is not something I really expected from such a restaurant......yea, the quiality may be quite good, but you'd never fill up on any of these entrees. It was a pretty good experience here, but it was more about the setting than the food.

We went during happy hour (2:30 - 5pm) where their hand crafted cocktails were $4 off. Prior to this, I haven't had a Mai Tai before so was unsure how they should taste but the Monkeypod version contained honey-lilikoi foam which made them bright, inviting, and iconic. Well everyone in the family loved these. They were simply delicious. From their happy hour food menu (appetizers were half off except anything containing seafood), the Roasted Chicken Wings were a hit with my sons. The Poke Tacos which were beautifully presented were fresh and tasty. One order comes with 3 so we ordered an extra taco which turned out to be the right move as they are on the small side. And I wanted to point out since the Tacos contained seafood, it was not eligible for the discount. Pizzas were priced at $16 (except for the Bourgeois) so we opted for the Margherita and Kahlua Pork and Pineapple. The latter was our family favorite. The pork was tender and flavorful which contrasted nicely with the sweet pineapple. We did order the Fish and chips from their regular menu. Mahi mahi was the fish of the day and it was good, but nothing exceptional. The fish came out nice and hot but the temperature of the fries were not so was a little disappointed. We ended our meal with the Banana Cream Pie. We all agreed that it was hands down the best Banana cream pie that we have had. The bananas were so fresh and flavorful, so much umami. The restaurant was open/airy and the view was amazing. Our server was friendly and the service went without a hitch. We will definitely be back.

Didn't make reservations and waited about 15 minutes for a table both times. On the first visit, we sat at the bar and ordered beer, house cut dries, and both the kalua pork & pineapple pizza and the mushroom & truffle oil pizza. Since it was happy hour, the food was all 50% off -- definitely a bargain, and the kalua pork & pineapple pizza was still excellent and the best dish. I was disappointed that nearly than half the draft beers are out, limiting the variety, but I was able to enjoy the only hazy IPAs available and the only witbier available (I forget the name of both). Sitting at the bar was fine, nothing very special about it -- and bar service was also just fine. One the second visit, we were sat at a table and ordered a beer and and both the kalua pork & pineapple pizza as well as the moroccan spiced lamb sausage. Again, both were 50% off -- a bargain, and the kalua pork & pineapple pizza was still excellent and the best dish. Similar to the prior trip, not many draft beers were available -- so I just had the IPA again. Table service was also fine, server was friendly and attentive. I 100% recommend coming to Monkeypod for happy hour (and only happy hour), I know I will be looking forward to going back for the kalua pork & pineapple pizza on my next trip to Maui!

The location is amazing, right on the water, and the establishment is rather small. We were sat at the bar, and I really enjoyed having the ocean view all around. Bar service was fine. However the food and drinks are "meh" at best. We went during "happy hour," and the menu is limited. The only item I found unique and interested was the ube hot bread -- definitely worth trying; I haven't seen ube at many other places. I found the seared ahi bruschetta to be a bit meager and found the coconut shrimp to completely miss the mark (tommy's is definitely the place to get this item). I also wasn't impressed with the makai tai (mai tai). So while I'm glad business are returning to Lahaina and I loved the views -- sadly the food and drinks didn't do it for me. Perhaps worth trying for dinner, but something tells me not. Furthermore there are definitely many better places to go to for happy hour (such as Monkeypod).

We spent every breakfast during the week at Ulu Kitchen since it was on property, wait times weren't too long (or bad at all), food was great, and they had good service. Server was nice and setting on the beach was also good. Since we came specifically for happy hour, we only ordered a few of the happy hour items (they have 7 items total available). I found the grilled tako escargot to be phenomenal, one of the top dishes I had during my trip. I also found the rosemary french fries to be great. Given the tako escargot was only $10 and the fries only $5; I found this to be an incredible meal. However the oysters on the half shell were a complete rip-off. For happy hour it's $25 (instead of the normal $31) -- not much of a discount and they only serve 5 tiny little oysters; very unimpressive and a rip-off. I'll come back again next time I'm in Maui for happy hour to do the tako escargot and the fries, not sure if I'd order anything else. Perhaps I might consider trying lunch or dinner.
