Cream of the crop vintage Levi's in the back section (redlines, big E's)

On a recent visit to NYC, I was on a mission to look for vintage men's Levi's. I figured that out of all the places in the world, there must be at least one shop that truly specializes in them, to the point of matching my level of nerdiness of analyzing the cut, age, country of manufacture, etc of each pair. After visiting a few other vintage and thrift stores around the city, I found my mecca at Front General Store. While I would have to pore through every pair at other shops to maybe find one diamond in the rough, it seemed that just about every pair of Levi's they had were high quality made in USA, with even some deadstock pairs of orange tabs in the mix. The main stacks of denim are toward the back portion of the main area of the store. Their level of curation and organization (mixed up some by customers, but otherwise organized by cut and very clearly marked with sizes) does not come cheap as you can expect to pay $100+ for a pair.. you might be able to find similar pairs for half that elsewhere, but you'd really have to search through a lot to find them. The small area in the very very back of the store is where the top gems are though. On one of the racks is the best denim they have, a mixture of redlines and even some big E's. You MIGHT get lucky running across a pair like these elsewhere, but the experience of being able to look through an entire group of them together is nearly museum-like. This is definitely a destination shop worth the trek!

If you're looking for a bargain this isn't the spot. While not necessarily overpriced they exclusively curate high quality offerings, and I throughly appreciate it. Beautiful items for the kitchen (the unglazed plates and bowls were stunning), very cool miscellaneous items, and a variety of stylish and prototypically Brooklyn clothes. Absolutely worth stopping in!

ATMOSPHERE Aurgh! Too cute. I'm in love with all the ceramic-wares. Each item is such an art piece. All the small gifts too, such great designs. In the back, has some clothing.

The coolest store! They have a lot of nice clothing, ceramics, accessories, glasses, denim, etc. Scored a very warm pair of wool gloves and knitted cap, and not at too bad of a price either. The selection exudes high quality and fashion. No complaints about the staff, they were polite and chill.

    Lol what...

Cool shop, but the prices are absolutely insane. (Sigh, Brooklyn). They had vintage graphic sweatshirts for over $50 (one Packers sweatshirt was over $200!) and this old used Hanes t-shirt was $38. Their non-clothing items were great and fairly priced, but if you are looking for the style of clothes they carry, just go to a Goodwill or Salvation Army Store...

Great gem of a store in Dumbo. Wide selection of wares from around the globe, like leather Bohemia slippers from Morocco in an array of colors. Beautiful jewelry including 14k gold necklaces, notebooks, art supplies, clothing. Just go visit!

A nice vintage store in DUMBO that I had the chance to stop by today. I do not know why but "Levi's" brand was all over the store, mostly shorts. So the clothing lost my attention fast however they have nice bandanas, 100% cotton and prices are between $6-$25. They also have many glasses. Vintage African glass beads are $20. They have pins, key chain, some hand made toys. I would recommend the store for unique gifts.

Super cute vintage store with a good selection of customized terrariums

Random strolling in the Dumbo hood n was pleasantly surprised by this cute little gem! Easy to shop, well organized, friendly staff, good selections of vintage and new and mostly of all very well priced! Will definitely come back for more! Ps. Some of my favorites were the vintage sunglasses/ glasses along with the small leather goods selection.

Out-of-this world amazing vintage Americana and workwear. I can only wish they had a bigger selection of women's items.

I am new to formal headwear, and my father suggested that I go here for a proper fitting and customization. I was excited about it! It felt like a next step in my adulthood as I grow into a middle-aged vibe. I took my 12-year-old son to show him the difference in quality between a mass retailer and a bespoke, local, small business retail experience. I splurged +1k on 3 new hats. I love them, but the service was nothing like it used to be, as I understand it. This is where I would give it a much lower rating if it weren't such a great little spot. 2 Stars: The two young women working were not very knowledgeable, seemed quite apathetic, and essentially left me to my own devices to sort fit, shape, etc. out. They answered questions about care adequately and showed me several hats that I asked to see, but in a detached way. In short, it was a very disappointing experience and not bespoke at all. My father was mystified when I told him about it. I don't generally leave reviews, good or bad, unless things go too far. But after reading through the low reviews, often from long-term loyal customers who lament experiences similar to mine and the recent change in ownership, I am bothered by the defensiveness in the owner's replies. Many of them say [the milliner has resigned due to health, and therefore we no longer offer shaping or repair services] or [come in for a chat to correct your misinformation]. WHAT?! That is how you respond? On a public forum? Marketing yourself as a luxury shop but responding like a cranky clerk? Why not hire a new milliner? Or train a new one? Find a way to outsource it in the meantime. But telling decades-long high-paying customers to do it themselves at home over a kettle...what are you talking about? Should I learn to tailor and do dry cleaning in my bathtub, too? Turns out, the problem is top-down. The new owner has clearly wrecked this place and doesn't seem to care; it's all about her. Another NYC institution bites the dust. All of that said, it's a unique place. One of the last vestiges. Go there.

I ordered a brand new Stetson Saxon in Graphite, but they sent me an old stock in Charcoal instead. The hat also did not come with a Stetson hat box but in a Bencraft hat box. When asked, Bencraft insisted that the colors are similar (they are not), and that their box is better than Stetson's because Bencraft's has a handle (I prefer Stetson's box which has on its side a paper label with hat info). I called the store several times to ask for a replacement, but nothing has been done. They also did not return calls/texts despite their promises to do so. Many calls were also not answered and went straight to voicemail. Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed in Bencraft Hatters for their lack of intent to make things right and I will be buying my hats elsewhere from now on.

A few weeks later, I walked by again and there was no hat class in progress. I popped in just to see what EVH is all about, as I love super niche businesses like this. I walked in and the owner was helping out a few other people, so I just perused around for a second. I had my airpods in with no music playing, hiding in plain sight. I heard the owners AWESOME British accent and thought to myself "wow it's really a vibe in here." At this exact moment, I spotted a hat that really caught my eye. It was a hat that had a mix matched denim pattern that could be paired with almost any outfit. I had a vision of me buying this hat and it becoming an integral part of my personality. "Oh, there goes the guy with the cool hat walking up 1st ave" onlookers would say as they walked by, jealous of my cool new hat. Cute girls would come up to me at the Wayland and or Ding-a-Ling saying "Oh my god, I love your hat!" ... "You haven't been to East Village Hats!??!?!?!" I would respond to them with a cheeky, endearing smile. However, when I picked up the hat it was like $130 and that's just out of my price range for a hat at this moment. Also, I have an extremely large head so the hat was probably a pipe dream all along. A man could dream can't he...?
