My wife parked our car in front of this store and while doing so very gently tapped the car behind us. She then got out of the car and I started to unstrap our one-year-old daughter from her car seat. The owner of this store came out acting utterly horrified even though there was literally no damage done to the car behind us, and threatened my wife saying "you're lucky you have a baby in the car." To reiterate, we tapped the car behind us as literally every New Yorker does while parallel parking, no damage whatsoever was done to this car, we did nothing to provoke him at all, and he felt the need to come out and threaten my wife (while not wearing a mask). This store always makes me smile. It's like walking into an EDM party, but with shoes! They tend to have the utilitarian boots and shoes that I like (Frye, Blundstone, Dansko) and comfy but cool street shoes (Vans, Saucony). If you like boots that are made for walking, this is your place. The staff are young and friendly. They don't have the easiest customers in this neighborhood, but they're always smiling. The prices are comparable to what you'd find online, which is good for me because I often head over when I need something right away. It was December 26th and many stores that sell children's shoes were closed. Since we had a very specific need, I called a number of stores and explained what we were searching for. I talked to someone very nice at DNA on the telephone. She told me she thought they had one shoe that might work. We drove to the store.with optimism. My son explained our need to the clerk who met us in the store. She immediately told him they had nothing like that. I interjected that I had just talked to someone who said they had one shoe that might work. She told us to wait and turned to ask the person behind the checkout counter. Since the employee with knowledge was checking out a customer, we had to wait a short time. So I turned to the boot display at my side. To my delight there sat a pair of UGG boots in just the color I had been wanting. Never wanting to miss a sale opportunity, I asked the clerk if the UGG's would be going on sale. She said that they never knew when there would be sales and turned away. She never asked if I was interested in a particular boot or wanted to try on a pair, turning instead back to the person behind the checkout counter. I probably would have bought my coveted boots if she had offered to help. But the poor customer service dampened my enthusiasm for purchasing them at DNA. When checkout was free, she spoke to the person who obviously answered the phone when I called. Turning back to us, she pulled a shoe off the display. When we told her that it wouldn't work, she said that was all they had; and to try their other store because they had a larger inventory. She turned and was gone. I sat down on a bench and found the other store on Yelp. Their phone number was obtained from the Yelp page. It would have been much easier if she had provided the number. It was noisy in the store so we had a communication problem with the other store. We gave up our search, deciding to go the on-line route. read more

My issue is with their online store and it's probably not fair to apply that to their physical location but you know what? Screw you DNA Footwear because I am not a happy customer right now. Long story short - found my dream shoes in my size on their site, placed the order. Silence after a few days. I call - apparently my order's been cancelled because the coupon code used was no good (the site accepted it as valid by the way, no error prompts). She said they sent an e-mail but no, I checked, no e-mail. It would have been nice to get a call asking me if I still wanted the shoes without the discount, no??? So I re-ordered them on the phone. Next day I get an e-mail saying it's cancelled again because the merchandise is damaged and can't be sold. I was specifically told the previous day that the item was still available for purchase. Ugh! Get your shit together DNA Footwear, this is crappy. You shattered my shoe dreams and wasted my time, I could have given up on this particular shoe and found something else. But I am walking around with wet socks for days because I don't have a good snow boot. Up yours. Moral of the story: Don't order online from this company. read more

So aggravated. I bought a pair of boots from this store and the rubber lining started peeling off the leather after one week of light use. Called the store and brought them in, and was told that they would send them to their warehouse, and if they were found to be defective I would have the option to return them or have them repaired. I shopped around that week and found a much better pair of boots, so I asked for a refund for the defective pair. I was rudely refused, and they compared the peeling lining "to a pair of converse." What??? This is supposed to be a waterproof leather boot, not a canvas sneaker. Better yet, they've had the boots for over a week and I haven't been able to get ahold of them. You sold me a defective shoe and you won't let me return it?? Screw that. Never shopping here again. Give me that refund, STAT. read more

I want to know if you can sue a store for offensive customer service. Seriously. So a week ago, I walk into the store, where two very nice young ladies are working. They help me with a pair of Dansko's with a buckle so I can make them wider. Caveat: I have wide feet, and big feet. I buy expensive, well made shoes so that I don't hurt them and can trust the craftsmanship. Cut to: I purchase the expensive shoes, happily walk out of the store in them, only to have the line of stitching that holds the toe buckle on break 15 minutes later. I call the store. Nice young ladies tell me to bring them back, so I do. They don't have my size, but they have one size smaller. I decide to try those. Put them on. Extend the strap so they're wide and comfy. Walk out the store and poof! 18 blocks later, the new shoes break. I call the store, they say come back. They say that they will have a shoemaker repair them. Okay, so now I've spent over $100 on brand new shoes that need to be fixed. I call Dansko and complain to them about the craftsmanship, but it's already in process at DNA, so can't send them in. I resolve to wait for the repair. A week later, they call me (today) and say come in, the shoes are back from the shoemaker. I come in, put them on, walk 1 block (one, folks), and they break a 3rd time. This is obviously from the Dansko end that the tiny bit of webbing inside holding the stitching to the leather is perforating. I can see it, and so can the store manager. This is where it changes: the jacked up store manager, who is apparently the brother of the owner says he'll give me a store credit, but no refund. I say that the policy of the store should make exceptions when the expensive merchandise breaks within 15 minutes of purchase. To this he tells me that Dansko is a good company, and he's never heard of this before, so he thinks I AM TOO FAT TO WEAR THE SHOES. Excuse me????? I didn't realize that I was Godzilla, and my enormous feet are too large to be shod. I didn't realize that the buckle and strap contraption was merely decorative, as are the shoes themselves, only meant to be looked at or worn by fairies and butterflies. Fuck you, pal! He tells me that he's out for the other pair of shoes and the repair on the first pair (bullshit - it's a manufacturer's error, so Dansko would give him back the money), and that I should try on some Birkenstocks. I kept telling him that he wasn't listening, that I don't wear Birkenstocks, that I bought new merchandise that was faulty, and that they needed to credit my card. And he kept telling me that my feet were the problem, so he wouldn't do anything but give me a credit. I cannot fathom that this meathead would seriously think that shoes break by being worn for a block, nor that I would think his statements to me were in any way acceptable. I waffled between punching him in the face, crying, and calling the police for stealing. Instead I'm taking the shoes to a reputable shoemaker who will fix the error, and I'm trashing the guy's store here and anywhere else I can find outlet. They also own a store in Bensonhurst, Something Else on Fifth, and Something Else on Smith or Court or something. I suggest going in and trying on the smallest things, ripping and breaking them in the process. Oops - guess we're just too fat to wear your things. Fucker. read more

Bought gorgeous boots online. Didn't realize @ the time but as I'm in Canada and the company is in the US, I was not only charged for International UPS shipping & handling, but also another $50 for brokerage fees once they arrived at my place. Then after wearing them for less than 2 hours the rubber sole on BOTH boots peeled off partially. I contacted DNA who quickly contacted me back. I suggested I get the boots repaired & they foot the bill. They asked for me to get a few quotes, which I did. Once I took the boots in to a shoe repair place the man exclaimed that they were not well made and would need to re-sole them for about $50. He actually ripped off the sole completely right in front of me with little to no effort. Ok - fine whatever. DNA would only offer to reimburse me $25. Really? Is it really going to break the bank? I asked for an explanation of why this expense wouldn't fully be covered since 1. They obvs didn't inspect the product on it's way out the door 2. My time has been wasted 3. Circumstances like this are not outlined in any way in their return / exchange policies. 4. Selling shoddy product for a LOT of $$$. Fool me once.... ***More to this. Totally ripped off at this location! I've been looking to buy a pair of Red Wing boots for some time. Decided to get them at DNA because I like the idea of supporting local businesses. So I go in and find the boots I'm looking for in my size and buy them. When I get home, I notice a small hole in the leather uppers - not a huge deal, but these are expensive boots. No big deal, I'll take them back to exchange them. Sales rep acknowledges that they are messed up, but there are no pairs left in my size, and it's a closed stock item. They offered me store credit, but I came specifically for these boots - store credit won't cut it. I ask for a refund and am refused. I'm a little flustered at this point, so I leave. Come back two days later figuring I'll speak with a manager. Instead I'm met with the same rep who originally sold me the shoes. He's much less helpful than the other rep - he implies that I am a liar and says I probably damaged the boots myself. So now I'm out $300 and stuck with a flawed pair of boots. I went in today planning to buy one summer sale and one fall pair of shoes for myself and one pair of kids shoes for my daughter. -It took ages for anyone to offer to help me, and when they did they were obviously annoyed by my daughter. The sales lady made a point of fixing any displays my daughter had touched before listening to me. She said, 'Oh my Gooood.' While moving the shoes. I told her I would fix them for her, and she said not to. -I requested sizes in two pair for myself and one for my daughter and were told none of them were in stock. Shoes are sort of my thing. I mean, yeah...sort of cliche, but if you think so I'll just step on you with my high heels. And not if you like that sort of thing, either. Only if it'll be mean! Both pairs of brown boots from this past winter are beyond trashed by salt/snow (though I can't quite seem to part with them, does anyone repair this kind of thing? PLEASE HELP with suggestions!). Anyway, I popped into DNA and found the perfect small wedge heeled brown boots that I'd been pining over. Yes, they are a tad expensive at $129.99, but I wear boots ALL THE TIME. Until they literally fall apart, so...I splurged. IN reality, this isn't expensive for boots at all. IN fact they have a very extensive line of Frye boots and shoes that'll put that price tag to shame. I'm just giving you a relative outlook. Add in a pair of gold Haviana thins for bummin' around in ($18), and I left pretty happy with the state my feet would be in for the near term. Most of the negative reviews seem to be with their online store, so I'd avoid that. However, as someone just stopping in to their retail location on 5th Avenue, totally normal shoe shopping experience. Girl asks my size, brings me small socks to wear, rings me up, gives me 10 percent off discount for next time (maybe), and I'm on my way. They have a very, very excellent assortment of shoes, too. If I had been left to my own devices with someone else's money I could've done some great damage here. Luckily I stayed focused, and left with just 2 pairs of desired footwear. Every time I've been in here, they haven't had the size I need in any of the shoes I'm interested in. Perhaps it's just bad luck, but I'd also guess that a small stock has played a role in my problems at DNA. I did buy a pair of TOMS that I was happy with, but how can you go wrong with TOMS? The woman at the counter did try to convince me that I needed a different size, but after assuring her that my other six pairs of TOMS fit just fine, she put them in the bag with a sigh. Wow, so many negative reviews! I'm surprised, actually. Here's my story: After trying Zappos, every department store known to man, and very expensive little boutiques, I broke down and ordered some boots from a company in England that specializes in "calf-fit" boots (i.e. for gals that have bigger or skinnier than average calves. I have the latter - which by the way, may seem nice but is not a good thing). Anywho, I finally received these boots after about 4 weeks, and what do you know, they don't fit. I hiked my big feet/skinny calves over to DNA and walked out with one pair of boots that fit aforementioned calves, and a cool chunky pair of patent leather shoes. The girl that helped me was very nice - in fact, she picked the boots out for me and offered to punch another hole in the buckle on the side of the boots for free so that I could adjust the circumference farther. They put extra holes in the shoes too. I thought that the prices were reasonable - around $120 for the boots and $80 for the shoes. There were lots of shoes on sale, too. The store was packed with people when I went there, so I assume that other peeps like them too! The only criticism I have is that it was hella hot in there. Happy shoe shopping! read more

I'd walked past this place tons of times and maybe even gone in once or twice, but this time I was playing for seriously. Caveat: shoes here are expensive. Addendum: shoes on sale here are not so expensive. The sales girl was nice but definitely tried to push me towards very expensive (150-200$ price tag) shoes instead of the ones that I liked, which were on sale for $45. I pity the fool who comes between me and my shoes though, so I won, and she probably got less of a commission but that's just too bad. Once I'd selected my shoes, she abandoned me to sit in the back of the store for a good 15 minutes while she helped other customers instead of ringing me up. My buddy, who also found a pair of shoes (thank goodness, his old sneakers had holes in the soles!) seemed to have a better experience up until it was time to pay, when he was relegated to the back of the store to sit with me. I should have written this review ages ago... Rode my boyfriend's bike for the first time from Sunset Park to Park Slope to pick up a pair of TOMS before a trip to Europe, and I was completely petrified the entire ride. When I walked into DNA Footwear, two staff members asked if I was OK right away (I must have looked like an insane person) and immediately started joking with me after I told them of my not-so-harrowing, but truly terrifying first bike ride on the streets of New York. The saleswoman helped me choose the perfect pair of TOMS for my trip/my entire life, even suggesting I go for the pop of red rather than the boring black (such a better choice). When I got home and realized I had taken the incorrect size by mistake - my fault, not theirs - I went back in the next day and they exchanged them within nanoseconds. They are super speedy. Seriously. Definitely getting my next pair of TOMS there. And there will be a next pair. Soon. read more

We recently stayed in Park Slope while in town for a wedding. We had some down time the day of the wedding, so we stopped in and did some shopping. The staff was very knowledgeable and attentive. Three out of four of us ended up buying some shoes. What happened later in the day is the reason I felt the need to take the time to leave a review... One hour before the wedding, I realized that the shoes I had packed were both right-footed..the store I had purchased them from did not check the box before selling them to me. I practically ran down to DNA and explained my situation. They were SO helpful and understood my sense of urgency and moved swiftly to get me some shoes and get me on my way. Janice was very sympathetic and she actually helped calm my nerves. She even remembered me AND my shoe size from earlier in the day! This is a review for the 86th St. location in Bensonhurst. Lately, a typical interaction between me and a DNA staffer goes something like this: Snookalike: Hi. Can I help you find anything today? Me: No thanks, just browsing. S: OK, well my name is __ in case you need a size. Me: Ok, great, thanks. S: What exactly are you looking for? Me: Um, boots. Flat boots. S: These are awesome, we just got these in, they're soooooo hot! (pulls patent leather 5'' stiletto boot off shelf) Me: Oh, those are way too high. I walk a lot. S: How about these then? They're sooooo comfy! (4'' suede boot with some heinous rouching on the side) Me: Nah, not for me. I'll just keep looking, thanks. S: Sure. (a roll of the eyes) Juiced, gorilla manager walks over to oversee the situation and clearly is getting frustrated with me taking up space in his store if I'm not trying anything on. Note: I've bought three pairs of shoes here in the past six months, but only out of desperation. Us Bhurst residents don't have many choices when it comes to footwear shopping. I'm over it...they can take their attitudes, (non-existant) return policy, and hooker shoes and shove it. PS: Their solution to not having your size in stock is to stretch a smaller one. I have been buying shoes from DNA since I moved to Park Slope. I love to stop in and browse and see what they have whenever I have a chance. Last week my in-laws were visiting and wanted to buy my 1 year old son a pair of shoes. He´s pretty big for his age and a bit between sizes (def not walking yet) but he needed something instead of his soft baby shoes. My mother in law got him a pair she liked. The next day at home i realized the size she got him was not fitting and the shoe was having a hard time staying on. I wasn´t sure about DNA´s return policy but I went into talk to the manager, Malvina. AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE! She was kind, helpful, knowledgeable and so sweet with my son! She took a lot of time to help us find another shoe that fit and she and the other gentleman working took my son by the hands and walked him around the store in the new shoes she suggested. You can tell she takes pride in her work because she went the extra mile. I work in the service industry and all I can say is WAY TO GO with the customer service, DNA. DNA Footwear recently opened up in the space previously occupied by Beacon's Closet. They offer a nice selection of footwear for men and women, mostly trendy and very hipster-friendly. The prices on the sale items are great (the regular priced items are pretty typical), so I recommend heading right to the sale shelves for the best deals. The space is well-appointed and the staff are friendly and helpful. I like having such a nice shoe store so close and plan to head back often. read more

I have shopped here many times over the years and the inventory doesn't change a lot.You can always find Fryes, Docs, Vans, Converse etc. Return policy is strict. Bought a pair of Havanasbecause I was in a bind for Memorial Day weekend. Spent $30 and they hurt so much! On the other hand, they helped me out when I needed a pair of black shoes for my daughter's musical. The sales woman was so helpful and I sent her running up and down to the stock room looking for something in my daughter's size. I got a good deal on a pair of Doc Marten Mary Janes. I was shopping for shoes with my husband while nine months pregnant; the baby had dropped and everything. Naturally, I had to pee while I was there. I asked the cashier if I could use their bathroom, and he said no! I ordered shoes online & they emailed me that because the shipping and billing address didnt match I was supposed to call my bank, add my work address as a shipping address, then give them my bank's 800# so they could confirm everything. Um. I used a debit card and honestly could not be bothered. I've never had a business ask me to do something like that and I'm what you might call an early adopter of online shopping. I asked them to cancel my order if they were not going to ship it -and I sent this request using my WORK email address no less. About an hour later I received an order cancellation notice. I bought a pair of summer shoes here in May. Then we had a cold snap and I didn't get a chance to get them out of the box. When I finally did in early June I realized the size just wasn't going to work. Called the store about an exchange or return as they were still brand new. Was refused help or access to manager over phone because I was 5 days over the 30 day window. The shoes were still prominently displayed on the website, not out of season by any means. So I emailed their customer service email. 4 weeks later NO RESPONSE! AWFUL SERVICE. If you want good service in Park Slope walk over to Erics on 7th. The sales people were okay they were friendly for the most part but you can tell they can get an attitude quickly by the way they answer your questions.
