We chose this place since it was close to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and we wanted a hearty, affordable, no-frills place after our morning hike. It's a 7 minute drive away, a 5 minute wait during the week for brunch, and it was exactly what we were looking for! We all ordered our choice of breakfast (from hearty, meaty, to vegetarian) and everyone seemed happy with their choices. I'd go back for their chili and their guava mimosa (which was recommended by our server). They give big portions so two of us had to-go boxes. Holy moly! We got recommended this place by someone who works in Carmel, and she was RIGHT!! Literally now one of my favorite breakfast places. I had the weekend special - peach cobbler french toast- and my fiancé had the breakfast burrito; some of the most amazing food i've ever had. They have really cute seating outside as well, a cute gift shop, and so much on the menu. We liked the location and service was actually really quick considering the crowd and the "from scratch" method. However, I ordered a cafe mocha and got a mug of hot chocolate. I don't like food waste so I just asked the server to bring me a shot of espresso to make it more like a mocha. Later I ordered my eggs over medium, and the server repeated our order verbatim so I know he didn't give it to the kitchen wrong. However, they came with super liquid yolks (over easy), definitely not over medium. Again, I told the server but did not want it taken back and remade (although they offered).. because I cannot stand food waste. I'd rather eat the wrong eggs. So they did say they told the kitchen. Stop by to visit from scratch since I was in town for the weekend and had a good things about. It. Came to try it out. We only had to wait. About 20 minutes to be seated which wasn't bad. I had the triple D sampler loved the potatoes and eggs, but felt the sausage needed a little bit more flavor. The biscuits were really good. My partner had the B.L.A.T. My sister wanted to check out this spot since she saw it on DDD. There was ongoing construction in the front of the complex, but we used Google maps and was able to walk through and find it in the back area. It was busy when we visited, even during the work week, but there is an affiliated shop next door so we browsed and had the kiddos look at the toys there to pass time until we were seated. We got a nice corner spot along the back wall with a bench. Service was friendly despite how busy they were. I ordered the skillet with the brisket chili, mushrooms, and tomatoes, topped with an over easy egg. I also got the biscuit. It's a huge serving, so I took the remaining half home. The chili was a weird combo with skillet and added too much liquid to the dish, so I would order it as a side instead next time if I wanted it again (tbh I would probably choose a different protein or veg). I really enjoyed their homemade biscuit, which comes with a mini serving of jam that they prepackage and include on the plate. I noticed that my sister got the strawberry jam but I got the apricot, and I wish they had asked for our preference. This may likely be because of the large number of customers they had at the time, but I also noticed that my egg was slightly overcooked (maybe more over medium than over easy) and my garnish was missing from my order while others had theirs. From Scratch is DELICIOUS!! Everything on the menu looks amazing and the portions are large. The ambiance is very nice and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Shout out to Waylon who was able to make a simple modification to my fruit cup and is passionate about working here as well as very knowledgeable on the history of this restaurant and had great suggestions for those visiting from out of town! Unfortunately had a subpar brunch here, expecting more since this place had hype. The service was great, the fire is nice inside, but my meal was not great sadly. I didn't think you could mess up huevos rancheros, but it had almost no flavor. It's my favorite dish, so I've had many versions at different restaurants. I don't understand why it has chips since it has corn tortillas (it's not chilaquiles), so it's too filling on the carbs, and not enough eggs or avocado (only a small piece). The beans didn't seem to have any spices or flavor. They forgot the ranchero sauce, so I thought it would add flavor when they brought it after on the side, but it was very bland. I did not get the house-made ground beef for an extra charge, which would probably add flavor. Seems like the best thing to order here is pancakes from looking at other people's meals, but there are no gluten-free options for me. The food was so delicious. Every single dish was served perfectly. The service was very timely as we went almost towards the end of closing hours. We sat outside and the weather was perfect. It's hidden on the lower level of a strip mall and towards the rear side, so a bit difficult to find. But once you locate it you will keep coming back again. Came on a Sunday and there can be a bit of a wait but there is a cute gift shop to walk around and the area itself is very cute! The cinnamon roll pancake is amazing, I can't recommend it enough. It has a bit of a caramelizes crunchy texture on top and the pancake itself is also very fluffy. The eggs Benedict was also great! I am definitely not a Guy Fieri fan, but that is how we found this place. We have stayed nearby many times, so it was a "hey, I know that place" moment. First it is in a lovely shopping center. I like a little more citrus and cayenne, but tbh, they nailed it. My wife started with a Bloody Mary. Said it was good, but preferred something with more tomato. From Scratch is a charming restaurant in the Barnyard Shopping Village in Carmel. Ownership has changed hands since the 1970's, though they've remained a local favorite for years and years. Their claim to fame is being featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives in 2015. It was an episode that included Robert Irvine alongside Guy Fieri. In the world of DDD establishments, this one left a little to be desired on the food side of things. However, it was still a nice experience! In my eyes, they're doing three things right here: 1) Massive portions. Talk about feeding an army. I guarantee most people can't finish their meals at a place like this. No one goes home hungry and they'll have to wheelbarrow you out of the restaurant! 2) They have plenty of seating, including a wonderful courtyard with lots of tables. They're even pet-friendly. On a nice morning, I can see everyone wanting to snag a table outside. 3) Service was extremely friendly and prompt. Servers checked in with us, refilled coffees, and asked how our meals were. I love shouting out great service, and they definitely deserved it here. THE ORDER: From Scratch Breakfast Roll, aka a breakfast burrito. Smothered in house made mole and tomatillo sauce, loaded with eggs, stuffed with toppings of my choosing, and served with potatoes. Did it look promising? Oh yes. Unfortunately the entire dish was incredibly underseasoned. I was really expecting more oomph from the sauces, but to be honest I didn't get much flavor from either. My wife pretty much said the same about her breakfast skillet. I've been to plenty of DDD endorsed joints over the years, and though an adorable little spot in Carmel, we weren't too impressed with the food. I contemplated between a 3 or 4 star for this review, because the service was really great and the bang for your buck is appreciated. But if you're in town for a limited amount of time, I wouldn't put this place to your must-do restaurants. The Canadian bacon on the traditional Benedict was truly ham. Not Canadian bacon, but a delicious slice of ham. Still absolutely delicious and I cleaned my plate. Service impeccable. We went here because of the reviews and because it was on the way to Point Lobos. There was plenty of parking on a Saturday around 11am. When we got to the restaurant we had to wait about 15 minutes. Once we got seated, our waiter took our drink order right away and got our drinks in less than ten minutes. My screwdriver did taste light. Once our waiter took our food order, our food came out in less than fifteen minutes. My son's quesadilla was good and cheesy. My French toast felt dry and I added a lot of syrup to take some of the dryness away. My husband's Benedict needed more flavor and one of the eggs was not poached right. I know Guy would br livid if he seen what we saw here. First off, we were told 30 minutes we waited an hour, which was hard on us since we are not young chickedees anymore, and we had to stand the whole time waiting, but thought...this food will be worth It... She set the table, looked around but never saw me watching her, and put that fork at the end of the table on the napking with the rest of the silverware for someone to use. Disgusting!! Then, as much as I love dogs, & was happy to see dogs are very welcome, dog hair was floating around the air as we ate outside, and it was landing on our food as well as on us. At first we didn't notice it, but as the sun shifted, the lighting showed so many dog hairs floating in the air, and landing in our plates, we were grossed plum out! I would have given this place 5 stars if they hadn't seated us where there was no waitress assigned. After waiting a while and everyone else getting served around us , I walked over to the hostess and asked who our server was. She said let me check and walked away. I went back to my table, not trying to make a scene and finally a waiter came and took our order. Shortly after we were served these amazing cinnamon roll pancakes and Monterey omelettes. This place was BUSY. We were staying at the Carmel Mission Inn, a short walk over. We came around 11am and waited around an hour to get seated. Our table for 2 was right by the entrance at the booths, very tight space I would not recommend for anyone with a big built. I'm average size and it was very tight to go between the tables into the booth. Our server was very nice. We ordered the traditional eggs Benedict with a mimosa (guava and mango). Everything was great, the potatoes were seasoned so well and probably my favorite! Portions were also very big, definitely had leftovers. The cup of chili the sampler came with was good but not the best chili I've ever had. It also came lukewarm but they gladly warmed it up when we asked. The gravy on the biscuits was phenomenal and the cheese grits were a fun take (fried into squares). The breakfast burrito was good but again, not amazing.
