Very big portion. Good brunch spot and very popular on a weekend. Tasty but would be nice if the house potatoes were crispier. Corned beef hash had a good amount of corned beef but a bit dry.
Really tasty breakfast spot in Carmel that definitely gets busy, so expect a wait during peak times. The food was worth it though, and everything tasted fresh and homemade like the name suggests. Loved the little store attached to the restaurant too. It was fun to browse after eating. The surrounding shopping area is also really nice to walk around and explore. A highlight for my daughter was the Mickey Mouse pancake! Overall a solid stop if you're visiting Carmel and looking for a good breakfast or brunch spot.
Wow, what a delicious and fun breakfast spot! We came in on a Thursday around 11:30 am and were able to be immediately seated. It was quite busy outside, but we found a nice spot in the shade. Once we started to order, a lot of the people started to leave and there was only a couple other parties outside. For once I was hungry AND actually able to order while thinking about portion sizes. Normally my eyes are more hungry than my stomach! I had one banana walnut pancake and still couldn't finish it. My partner ordered the breakfast skillet with chorizo, mushrooms, and avocado. Both were exceptionally delicious, and the skillet especially with their homemade bottled pepper sauce. It's available to purchase but they ran out when we were visiting. The pancake had bananas or walnuts in every bite, if not both. The maple syrup was also heated up so it made for a very pleasant experience. I'm normally a savory breakfast gal, but this called to me, and I'm so glad I went with it. And the skillet wasn't that spicy but packed tons of flavor. I could taste some smoke paprika, garlic powder, and a pleasant amount of salt and pepper. We enjoyed our time here, and since the business was slowing down, we were able to chat with our waiter and get some ideas for local spots to try. 10/10, we will be back again! :) Thank you so much!
On a recent trip to the Bay Area we had a chance to swing by the Monterey Peninsula on the way south and visit with a dear friend. This "young lady" and I have been great pals since 4th grade, and that was quite a while ago. Ahem! She's lived in Carmel since the early 80's and knows so many great places to go. She recommended From Scratch as a good spot to meet for breakfast. On a foggy morning, we parked on the exterior of The Barnyard and took a meandering path to find the restaurant. I had actually dined in that space many, many years ago. I don't even recall what it was called at that time. The From Scratch iteration is wonderful! It's cozy and charming on the inside. I didn't end up taking many pix inside as they were so consistently full of patrons that I didn't want to intrude on people's meals. They also have an outdoor patio area, which is kept warm by heaters, but my friend had scored a table inside near the fireplace, and that turned out to be a perfect place. The menu has all the breakfast favorites, but with their own little creative twists. It was hard to narrow down to a final choice of what to order. Service was excellent throughout, and our server had a just-right sense of humor. The portions are enormous!!! Dear Hubby and I could have easily split one plate and would have gone away completely full. If one is going to order whichever dish you choose, unless you haven't eaten for a week, I would plan that you'll be taking away leftovers. Their homemade sausage patties were superb with a subtle sweet taste that complimented the savory meat. Thick, fluffy French toast was so delicious with real maple syrup to drizzle on top. DH fully enjoyed his biscuits and gravy. I don't know how he ate as much as he did, but I did do most of the driving in the afternoon while he napped off that breakfast! It was so divine to visit with my sweet friend in such a lovely atmosphere while eating delicious food. What a wonderful start to the day! I can see this being a draw for locals and visitors alike.

Omg the breakfast was so delicious! The pancakes were huge, but super yummy! I can't remember exactly what the hubby's breakfast was called, so sorry, but we loved it as well and the portions are enormous! The coffee was nice and strong, we loved everything and the service, fabulous, fast and friendly.
Food Ordered the Triple D Sampler (biscuits and gravy, with eggs and a cup of brisket chili) - yum! I think the chili was my favorite part - flavorful and good texture. The gravy for the biscuits and gravy was spiced well. My husband got the cinnamon roll pancakes and a side of a bacon. He was pleased with his meal. Pancakes were huge! Our lattes were pleasant - good presentation and flavor. Service Our server was patient, friendly, and informative. Ambiance The restaurant had an elevated diner vibe, nothing felt dated. I saw that they had a homemade mole for their breakfast burritos. Would definitely come back to try that out.
While visiting Carmel for a single night before hitting the road to explore Big Sur, I was on the hunt for a breakfast that would be open early, casual vibes, and (of course) delicious! My Yelp search introduced From Scratch Restaurant which satisfied all of my requirements but seeing that they were featured on Triple D is what sealed the deal. So I found myself (and my husband) inside the cozy diner shortly after they opened at 8am. If I could give half stars, I would give my experience a 3.5. The waitress had a lovely personality and was a pro at upselling (not mad at it). I ordered a single Granola Pancake and added a side of bacon and a fried egg. Thanks to the server's recommendation, I chose fresh blueberries and fresh banana to be cooked right into my pancake. It was the best pancake I have ever had!! Light and fluffy, little pockets of fruit bursting in my mouth, and the crunchy granola baked into the top! The servings are generous, so I ended up sharing some of my pancake with my husband and took a couple pieces of thick bacon to-go. My vanilla latte was served beautifully in a clear stein-style mug. It was quite hot, so I ended up taking it to-go since I did not drink much of it during my meal. However, after leaving, I realized the latte was burnt. My husband confirmed his black coffee also tasted burnt but he just kept adding sugar to it until he could drink it. I wish we had said something during the meal, but sadly the bad coffee brought my stars from a 4 down to a 3.5. I would definitely return for the pancake! If you need a cozy and casual diner breakfast, From Scratch is a fair choice.
Wow been a year. Could not wait for our return. Cool morning with our dog. Seated quickly on patio. Host turned on heater which was welcoming. Great open area with great ambiance. Server Nick was quickly out to our table. Bloody Marys ordered and quickly delivered. Food again was overloaded crazy plate. So what's wrong with that. Again another awesome experience. Looking forward to next year.
Great breakfast food, pancakes and corned beef hash and eggs Benedict were all solid and well priced/portioned. I eat a lot and I was full. The cheesy grits are very unique as they fry them, was something fun I'd never tried in this style. Outdoor patio is pretty and they have heating lamps on cooler days. Servers were very nice and attentive and food came out fast even though it seemed to be a full house.
My wife found this gem. It sits below the complex and packed. We don't wait long at all as the place runs like a well oiled machine. The breakfast skillet was delicious and OJ was fresh. Plenty of portions and easy to navigate. Great place for breakfast. I will be back. Try it folks, you won't be disappointed. I want to try their pancakes next time.
We were in town for a fun staycation anniversary trip vibe and decided to stop by this restaurant for a hearty breakfast meal before we enjoyed the rest of our day. I ended up ordering a veggie omelette with potatoes and sourdough toast. The portions were very generous, the food was well seasoned, I just knew I was going to look forward to my leftovers later lol. When we sat down, we were immediately offered water and coffee. Our food came out with a reasonable time and all of the staff was very kind and welcoming. this is a busy breakfast and brunch spot, it seemed that everyone was enjoying their meal. We sat outside on the patio area to enjoy our meal and coffee & definitely will stop again next time we're in the area.
Well, second visit to Monterey in past six months and of course this meant a return visit to one of our favorite restaurants, From Scratch! First of all, we lucked out because we were seated quickly and got the same amazing waiter, John. He always makes sure that we love our meals, he is friendly and attentive, the perfect waiter! Our meals were just as good this time as last. This time my husband and I both had omelets but with different sides. Let me just say, the portions are huge and will keep you full all day! The bacon is the best I have ever tasted anywhere and the cheesy grits were a unique and delish side. The eggs were so fluffy! I just love this place and wish I could go here every week! Whenever we go to the coast, this is a tradition now: breakfast at From Scratch!! Yummmm-o

We got there first thing in the morning. It wasn't busy and had the coziest vibes. We got a table right next to a fireplace and it was heavenly to sip on coffee with the warm fire. My husband and I both ordered scrambles and were not disappointed. SO tasty and so much food. Highly recommend and will be coming back to eat soon. read more
First breakfast in Carmel, we must be at From Scratch. Wife had a half omelette that she enjoyed. I had a side order of biscuit and gravy along with a bowl of brisket chili. Had a nice Bloody Mary to go with it. Service is always great. My good was good but didn't knock my socks off me. 3/5. read more

The food was so delicious. Every single dish was served perfectly. The service was very timely as we went almost towards the end of closing hours. We sat outside and the weather was perfect. It's hidden on the lower level of a strip mall and towards the rear side, so a bit difficult to find. But once you locate it you will keep coming back again. It's a bit far from San Jose, but the food is so good that it's almost worth the drive and while you are at it, enjoy Carmel-by-the-sea. read more
Came on a Sunday and there can be a bit of a wait but there is a cute gift shop to walk around and the area itself is very cute! The cinnamon roll pancake is amazing, I can't recommend it enough. It has a bit of a caramelizes crunchy texture on top and the pancake itself is also very fluffy. The eggs Benedict was also great! My only thing is that one egg was a bit overdone while the other was more under but it was delicious. They have indoor and outdoor seating :) read more

Service was done nicely and quickly! Our server was clearly very experienced and checked on us often, drinks were quick as well as we had mango and guava mimosas. Pancakes were yummy! Probably wouldn't get the huevos rancheros again though! nothing special unfortunately, but it's good simple food:) will definitely come again into this fun and welcoming place. read more

My boyfriend and I were visiting Monterey and we were looking forward to eat here. When we arrived, the ambiance was nice. We were told it would be a 20 minute wait which we did not mind. However, after we were seated and situated in the outdoor patio area, we began to browse the menu. We waited an additional 10-15 minutes before our waiter checked in on us. Our assigned waiter was an older white woman who appears to be in her late 50s. Shortly after, a white older couple sat at the table beside my partner and I. The waiter glanced at us and proceeded to take the couple's entire order ranging from drinks to their meal. We did not want to draw attention to it as we initially thought it was a mistake. She checked in with us after and began taking our orders to drink. We continued to sharing, adding that we were ready to add our food order and mid sentence she walked away to attend to a second couple who was also white, sitting further down our left to take their entire order as well. My boyfriend made an attempt to say "Excuse me" and she made a hang gesture and mumbled under her breath. She never took our order. My boyfriend and I, in the moment, felt disrespected and felt discriminated against. We understand the demand of running a business but this employee single handedly caused distress during our visit. We want to highlight John as well as the other incredibly lovely employees who enhanced our experience and who emulate that kind hearted people still exist. John made our visit feel so memorable and the other employees were so friendly, it really made up for the discrimination we had felt. The food was delicious and overall, I want to wish John, the manager and the rest of the team an infinite thank you for keeping customer service and kindness at the forefront of what you all do. read more

Our favorite place in Carmel for breakfast. Love the doggies menu. Doggie eggs looked like 3 eggs. So yummy. Gave doggie a water bowl. Have heat lamp outside which is nice. An absolute must visit when in the area. I always have the eggs Benedict. But everything looks good. They have an extensive menu of breakfast items, sandwiches and more. The Canadian bacon on the traditional Benedict was truly ham. Not Canadian bacon, but a delicious slice of ham. Still absolutely delicious and I cleaned my plate. Service impeccable. My friends and I sat there for a while visiting and I never felt rushed. A huge line and crowded. But a family vibe. And of course, Guy Fieri, from Diners, drive ins and dives, visited here, making it famous. Come here. Do yourself a favor. SYOY! read more
We went here because of the reviews and because it was on the way to Point Lobos. There was plenty of parking on a Saturday around 11am. When we got to the restaurant we had to wait about 15 minutes. Once we got seated, our waiter took our drink order right away and got our drinks in less than ten minutes. My screwdriver did taste light. Once our waiter took our food order, our food came out in less than fifteen minutes. My son's quesadilla was good and cheesy. My French toast felt dry and I added a lot of syrup to take some of the dryness away. My husband's Benedict needed more flavor and one of the eggs was not poached right. Not sure if we would go back and order other food, but it was disappointing. read more

We had an amazing time! Every employee we interacted with was genuinely so kind. It was chilly outside, but it felt perfect because of the outdoor heaters. The brisket was the perfect texture and tasted so good with the breakfast skillet. Finding fresh biscuits is so hard nowadays, but I love how even the biscuits were so fresh. Definitely would be returning next time I'm in Carmel for brunch! read more

I think people are eating memories when they come here. It's a diner with subpar diner food. Plus.. the portions are so huge that a ton of food is wasted. The only palatable thing I had was a pancake. Latte - bitter and gross Corned beef and hash- overcooked and a spice that turned my stomach. Husbands coffee - bitter Eggs Benedict - my husband liked it but it's definitely a 2 person dish. Truly, save your money. Go somewhere else. I added 1 star because the service was good. read more

From Scratch is a charming restaurant in the Barnyard Shopping Village in Carmel. Ownership has changed hands since the 1970's, though they've remained a local favorite for years and years. Their claim to fame is being featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives in 2015. It was an episode that included Robert Irvine alongside Guy Fieri. In the world of DDD establishments, this one left a little to be desired on the food side of things. However, it was still a nice experience! In my eyes, they're doing three things right here: 1) Massive portions. Talk about feeding an army. I guarantee most people can't finish their meals at a place like this. No one goes home hungry and they'll have to wheelbarrow you out of the restaurant! 2) They have plenty of seating, including a wonderful courtyard with lots of tables. They're even pet-friendly. On a nice morning, I can see everyone wanting to snag a table outside. 3) Service was extremely friendly and prompt. Servers checked in with us, refilled coffees, and asked how our meals were. I love shouting out great service, and they definitely deserved it here. THE ORDER: From Scratch Breakfast Roll, aka a breakfast burrito. Smothered in house made mole and tomatillo sauce, loaded with eggs, stuffed with toppings of my choosing, and served with potatoes. Did it look promising? Oh yes. Unfortunately the entire dish was incredibly underseasoned. I was really expecting more oomph from the sauces, but to be honest I didn't get much flavor from either. My wife pretty much said the same about her breakfast skillet. I've been to plenty of DDD endorsed joints over the years, and though an adorable little spot in Carmel, we weren't too impressed with the food. I contemplated between a 3 or 4 star for this review, because the service was really great and the bang for your buck is appreciated. But if you're in town for a limited amount of time, I wouldn't put this place to your must-do restaurants. No shade, but I'd recommend waiting in line at the bakery a few hundred feet away instead. read more

This place was BUSY. We were staying at the Carmel Mission Inn, a short walk over. We came around 11am and waited around an hour to get seated. Our table for 2 was right by the entrance at the booths, very tight space I would not recommend for anyone with a big built. I'm average size and it was very tight to go between the tables into the booth. Our server was very nice. We ordered the traditional eggs Benedict with a mimosa (guava and mango). Everything was great, the potatoes were seasoned so well and probably my favorite! Portions were also very big, definitely had leftovers. If you go during a busy time, there's a lot to walk/look at around the plaza while you wait for your table. read more

From Scratch is our go to breakfast and brunch when staying in Monterey. It's worth the drive. The passing is easy. The Barnyard, in general, is a very pretty shopping area in Carmel. Follow the signs to From Scratch. Once you're close the smell of good food will lead you to the entrance. We love the build your own breakfast burritos...delicious! The coffee is good and the service is very prompt. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Definitely recommended! read more

We came around lunchtime Tuesday, no wait for us. Hands down the best breakfast skillets we have ever had. Husband added all meat to his, and I did more of a Florentine style. First time I've had red potatoes made as homestyle, and it was so perfectly cooked. Coffee was good, service excellent, and we didn't leave smelling like a diner (which is a big plus when you're headed to other places after). This place lived up to its reputation. If you don't live here, I would highly recommend putting this place on your list of restaurants to visit on your Carmel trip. read more

Solid brunch spot when you're visiting the area nestled in quiet shopping center. We got the Triple D sampler and the build your own breakfast burrito. The cup of chili the sampler came with was good but not the best chili I've ever had. It also came lukewarm but they gladly warmed it up when we asked. The gravy on the biscuits was phenomenal and the cheese grits were a fun take (fried into squares). The breakfast burrito was good but again, not amazing. I would also advise to skip the sour cream addition because it made it a little too "soupy" inside. The potatoes were great! The service here is excellent; everyone is super friendly and helpful. I recommend coming here if you're looking for a hearty, American breakfast! read more
I got the cinnamon french toast and my friend got the huevos rancheros with veggie sausage. For some reason, a lot of restaurants don't have very good or even decent french toast; it's usually dry and burnt. The french toast here was soft and delicious! I could taste the cinnamon and it's definitely one of the better french toasts I've had. I would say it's more of a dense french toast than a soggy or light french toast, if you prefer that type of french toast. My friend enjoyed her huevos rancheros. The portions here are huge! Our waitress was prompt and attentive. The only thing is that the inside of the restaurant smelled a little weird. I'm not sure if it's the cleaner they use, but we initially sat inside and had to ask to move outdoors because the smell was too strong for both of us. read more

First off I am very sorry that that happened to you. Typically SUR is not open at the same time we are. So that we actually share - they use our tables outside at night sometimes. There is a picnic table on the back grassy area that is common…
