Omg the breakfast was so delicious! The pancakes were huge, but super yummy! I can't remember exactly what the hubby's breakfast was called, so sorry, but we loved it as well and the portions are enormous! The coffee was nice and strong, we loved everything and the service, fabulous, fast and friendly.
On a recent trip to the Bay Area we had a chance to swing by the Monterey Peninsula on the way south and visit with a dear friend. This "young lady" and I have been great pals since 4th grade, and that was quite a while ago. Ahem! She's lived in Carmel since the early 80's and knows so many great places to go. She recommended From Scratch as a good spot to meet for breakfast. On a foggy morning, we parked on the exterior of The Barnyard and took a meandering path to find the restaurant. I had actually dined in that space many, many years ago. I don't even recall what it was called at that time. The From Scratch iteration is wonderful! It's cozy and charming on the inside. I didn't end up taking many pix inside as they were so consistently full of patrons that I didn't want to intrude on people's meals. They also have an outdoor patio area, which is kept warm by heaters, but my friend had scored a table inside near the fireplace, and that turned out to be a perfect place. The menu has all the breakfast favorites, but with their own little creative twists. It was hard to narrow down to a final choice of what to order. Service was excellent throughout, and our server had a just-right sense of humor. The portions are enormous!!! Dear Hubby and I could have easily split one plate and would have gone away completely full. If one is going to order whichever dish you choose, unless you haven't eaten for a week, I would plan that you'll be taking away leftovers. Their homemade sausage patties were superb with a subtle sweet taste that complimented the savory meat. Thick, fluffy French toast was so delicious with real maple syrup to drizzle on top. DH fully enjoyed his biscuits and gravy. I don't know how he ate as much as he did, but I did do most of the driving in the afternoon while he napped off that breakfast! It was so divine to visit with my sweet friend in such a lovely atmosphere while eating delicious food. What a wonderful start to the day! I can see this being a draw for locals and visitors alike.
Food Ordered the Triple D Sampler (biscuits and gravy, with eggs and a cup of brisket chili) - yum! I think the chili was my favorite part - flavorful and good texture. The gravy for the biscuits and gravy was spiced well. My husband got the cinnamon roll pancakes and a side of a bacon. He was pleased with his meal. Pancakes were huge! Our lattes were pleasant - good presentation and flavor. Service Our server was patient, friendly, and informative. Ambiance The restaurant had an elevated diner vibe, nothing felt dated. I saw that they had a homemade mole for their breakfast burritos. Would definitely come back to try that out.
While visiting Carmel for a single night before hitting the road to explore Big Sur, I was on the hunt for a breakfast that would be open early, casual vibes, and (of course) delicious! My Yelp search introduced From Scratch Restaurant which satisfied all of my requirements but seeing that they were featured on Triple D is what sealed the deal. So I found myself (and my husband) inside the cozy diner shortly after they opened at 8am. If I could give half stars, I would give my experience a 3.5. The waitress had a lovely personality and was a pro at upselling (not mad at it). I ordered a single Granola Pancake and added a side of bacon and a fried egg. Thanks to the server's recommendation, I chose fresh blueberries and fresh banana to be cooked right into my pancake. It was the best pancake I have ever had!! Light and fluffy, little pockets of fruit bursting in my mouth, and the crunchy granola baked into the top! The servings are generous, so I ended up sharing some of my pancake with my husband and took a couple pieces of thick bacon to-go. My vanilla latte was served beautifully in a clear stein-style mug. It was quite hot, so I ended up taking it to-go since I did not drink much of it during my meal. However, after leaving, I realized the latte was burnt. My husband confirmed his black coffee also tasted burnt but he just kept adding sugar to it until he could drink it. I wish we had said something during the meal, but sadly the bad coffee brought my stars from a 4 down to a 3.5. I would definitely return for the pancake! If you need a cozy and casual diner breakfast, From Scratch is a fair choice.
Wow been a year. Could not wait for our return. Cool morning with our dog. Seated quickly on patio. Host turned on heater which was welcoming. Great open area with great ambiance. Server Nick was quickly out to our table. Bloody Marys ordered and quickly delivered. Food again was overloaded crazy plate. So what's wrong with that. Again another awesome experience. Looking forward to next year.
We were in town for a fun staycation anniversary trip vibe and decided to stop by this restaurant for a hearty breakfast meal before we enjoyed the rest of our day. I ended up ordering a veggie omelette with potatoes and sourdough toast. The portions were very generous, the food was well seasoned, I just knew I was going to look forward to my leftovers later lol. When we sat down, we were immediately offered water and coffee. Our food came out with a reasonable time and all of the staff was very kind and welcoming. this is a busy breakfast and brunch spot, it seemed that everyone was enjoying their meal. We sat outside on the patio area to enjoy our meal and coffee & definitely will stop again next time we're in the area.
Well, second visit to Monterey in past six months and of course this meant a return visit to one of our favorite restaurants, From Scratch! First of all, we lucked out because we were seated quickly and got the same amazing waiter, John. He always makes sure that we love our meals, he is friendly and attentive, the perfect waiter! Our meals were just as good this time as last. This time my husband and I both had omelets but with different sides. Let me just say, the portions are huge and will keep you full all day! The bacon is the best I have ever tasted anywhere and the cheesy grits were a unique and delish side. The eggs were so fluffy! I just love this place and wish I could go here every week! Whenever we go to the coast, this is a tradition now: breakfast at From Scratch!! Yummmm-o
We stop at this "mall" a few times a year on our way to/home from Camping in Big Sur. Had no idea this breakfast/brunch gem was hidden away & would definitely stop here again. Don't come here if you are in a rush or want something fast! The positives: fantastic dark roast coffee (free refills), huge meal portions, great range of choices, excellent ingredients, everything made from scratch, and pricing was good value in out opinion. The challenges: long wait time (we visited on a Sunday 11:30/primetime) -we waited 45-60 minutes to be seated & took a bit for our food to arrive but appreciated the coffee & endless refills (be aware its 5.50 per person). I ordered the skillet with Eggs scrambled & choice of 3 items. I chose bacon, onions & topped with sliced avocado served over potatoes & i had the homemade cheese biscuit which was a wonderful complement served with homemade marmalade. And i requested a side of pico de gallo (tasted homemade) that made it perfect. My hubby had the wrap which is the burrito with 3 items -he chose bacon avocado & jalapeno) and had a side of potatoes. The burrito had a mole sauce on it that might have been better served on the side. His potatoes tasted overly salty. Would definitely come here again to try the eggs benedict, or French toast, or pancakes or hamburger---so many good things passed by our table. If you are not in a hurry and want a very filling brunch this is your place. And if you have to wait for a table, looked like you could order mimosas and bloody mary's in the store while you wait.
We came to From Scratch on our way back to LA. I was excited to find that this place featured on the Food Network. We ordered the French toast and the From scratch breakfast roll. We thought the food was over all ok, I did wish the breakfast roll wasn't covered in the sauce. The food felt average but solid. Fairly generous portions. The place was pretty busy but we got seated quickly.
This place was excellent! Recently visited after getting a recommendation from an employee at the hotel we were staying at. Located in a shopping center that is full of shops and eateries. It's located inside on the lower level. The service that we received was very friendly and we felt cared for by the staff. Most importantly the food was PHENOMENAL. The portions were large. The dishes were flavorful and the ingredients tasted fresh. I can't wait to go back and visit whenever I'm in the area.
My bf and I came early on a Sunday morning and it was busy!! We got lucky and got seats inside but it was definitely very crowded. The huge portions kept us satiated for hours after and we were made to feel right at home by the amazing service. We would definitely come back to try more of their menu the next time we're in town. Finding the restaurant is definitely a little bit confusing but such a cute area to explore. My bf ordered the corn beef hash with potatoes and cheese biscuit (3.5/5): We loved the fluffiness of the cheese biscuit and it went well with the jam provided. Potatoes were very well seasoned. while the corned beef hash was flavorful, it was also a bit dry which was disappointing. The potatoes included with the hash were very flavorful as well. Because of the beef hash being dry though he'd probably skip this next time. I ordered the Sausage benedict with fresh fruit (4/5): Creamy, saucy, and very delicious. The inclusion of mushrooms and onions in this Benedict added a nice texture and helped break up some of the heaviness from the dish. Loved that the English muffin used was soft and easy to cut into.
This was a pretty busy brunch spot even at 8AM! We were seated immediately but there were already a good amount of tables taken inside and outside. I got a breakfast skillet dish with chili, tomatoes, and mushrooms. The food was a little salty for my preference but otherwise, very delicious! The value is great! We shared 2 dishes between the 3 of us and we still had leftovers! This is a cosy brunch restaurant.

Went here on our last day in Monterey and it was AMAZING! The food was so yummy and tasted very flavorful. Our server was so kind and attentive and accommodated to my food allergies. I loved the vibes of the restaurant too! My bf and I checked out the gift shop and it was so cute! Would definitely recommend :) read more
When I think breakfast in Carmel, I think of From Scratch. I've been coming to From Scratch for so many years and it never disappoints. I always recommend it to friends and family that visit and they all leave pleasantly surprise and enjoying it. Their service is always spectacular and the food never disappoints. I'm a big fan of their huevos rancheros but they have a lot of other good food too. Plus dessert! Definitely worth the price. Prices are average. It's always a good time. They have indoor and outdoor seating for those nice mornings. Such a chill place to go to with a group, alone or even on a cute little date. :) I wish I had more pictures of the food but It's always to good, I just dig in and forget to snap. read more

We went to From Scratch on a saturday morning, we got there at about 9am and had no wait, but it quickly filled up after us. We sat outside next to a heater and felt great. We ordered the triple D platters it came with a cup of brisket chili, 2 eggs, biscuits and gravy, and a side. we chose fries. I ate the chili, i'm not a big chili dan but this was amazing. I wanted to go back the following day for it. I give it a 10/10! My boyfriend ate the rest of the plate, he rated it a 7/10. I liked the food but i felt like it needed more flavor or salt in the gravy and fry season particularly. I ordered the cinnamon roll pancakes, it was super good, tasted exactly how it sounds so if you're not into sweets don't get this. I enjoyed them so i'll give them an 7.5/10 definitely was full on half of one though. my boyfriend doesn't care for sweets for breakfast so he gave it a 6/10. I ordered a mimosa, and my boyfriend got a soda so our total came out $65. We would recommend this place, and will definitely be returning for the brisket chili! read more
I got the triple D sampler. You get the D, more D, and when you think you're done, more D! Actually, I don't really know what any of the three D's stand for... It's sausage, biscuits, gravy, eggs, chili and your choice of side. Doesn't sound like much but it's very filling. Many breakfast spots just cook up premade food and serve them to you. If you've been to one, you've been to them all. Those restaurants just plate their food differently. This place is different. The recipes are unique to this restaurant. The biscuits are homemade. The sausage is home made, and my side of fried cheese grits were also homemade! The gravy and chili was probably homemade too, hence the restaurant's name. The biscuits were light and fluffy, kind of like a buttery biscuit pancake hybrid. The sausage patties weren't overly salty like the ones you get in the stores. The cheese grits were a bit like cheesy corn muffin squares. Delicious breakfast spot! Original restaurants like this that are also delicious are hard to come by. You can't go wrong with brunch! The serving size is huge, the price point is right, and staffs are so nice! The weather was perfect as well, we decided to sit outside. We got the triple D (which they offered to split for us) and also banana walnut pancakes. Both were pretty good!! We couldn't finish our meal because the portion was huge and got a to go box for our pancake. Definitely worth it. Apparently everything from the kitchen is made out of scratch. Perfect spot for casual brunch. Everything here looks so good! We had a 25 minute wait on Sunday around 1 . Watching everyone's food come out was nice to see that everything on their menu seemed to look really good! Decided to get the skillet with mushrooms, sausage, avocado, and biscuit. Got the gravy on the side as well. It was so good and the portions are huge. The cinnamon French toast was pretty good and love that you can get a side of ham for some savory and sweet. The hollandaise sauce was very generous for eggs Benedict. Price point is really great too, especially for portions, taste, and area. I wouldn't come out of my way for it if I was out of town as there's nothing special or unique, just that it's a very good quality standard breakfast spot with a few cool items, but if I'm looking for something to eat in this area, I would definitely come back because I want to try more items on the menu! read more

This cute spot in Carmel is definitely worth waiting for. Despite driving over an hour and having to wait for 30-40mins for a table, this place was so worth it! The food portions are HUGE and the servers are amazing and very friendly. The environment is also dog friendly. If you've been to Carmel let me tell you it's fun trying to locate a place because the lack of signage, however this place didn't disappoint! Food was well seasoned, fast service, portions were HUGE and shareable, come hungry! read more
Guy Fieri Approved Diners, Drive-ins and Dives Season 21, Ep 3 Found this brunch spot when I was looking for things to do around the Carmel area. As a person who loves food/cooking shows, I was immediately drawn when I saw Guy Fieri's name. I didn't have any expectations prior to coming here but then I tried the brisket chili . It was soo delicious. I will definitely be coming back the next time I visit. I walked in and waited roughly 15-20 mins for a table. They have outdoor and indoor seating but I wanted to sit inside to see all the posters and decor they had of Guy Fieri. Super cozy brunch spot, highly recommend! Yet another dog friendly restaurant in the great town of Carmel! We came in at noon and were quoted a wait time of about 30 minutes. The wait ended up being only about 15 minutes or so. I started off with a Bloody Mary extra spicy which was made perfectly. It was savory and spicy and served with a celery stick and olives stuffed with pickled onions. 5/5 I ordered the Triple D with eggs scrambled. It was just as heavy and delicious as it sounds on the menu - biscuit topped with sausage patties and gravy with eggs and a side (I got country potatoes). It was definitely enough for two people to share. Our dog loved the scrambled eggs as well. Everything was very reasonably priced and good quality. My only complaint is that the staff all seemed sad / annoyed they had a shift. .. like everybody. Smiles were in scarce supply. Other than that, the entire visit was enjoyable. Yummy Certified? Definitely try this place for a good breakfast. ITS YUM! We went here for brunch on 31st December 2023 and there was a 20mins wait. I must say this place is a must visit. All the dishes we ordered were cooked to perfection and the pepper plant sauce was quite interesting too. From Blueberry pancakes to Biscuit gravy and omelette everything was just yummm. We absolutely loved this place and the portion size is good. 2 people can share a dish and you will be full. We also ordered Mocha, Cappuccino & cafe latte and the quantity was quite a lot. Absolutely loved this place. And would highly recommend this and would give this place 4.5/5. I will definitely visit this place again. read more
I was visiting from out of town for a wedding and was looking for a nice breakfast spot before hitting the beach. I found From Scratch and decided to check it out. It was located in a super cute little shopping plaza with some retail shopping and some restaurants. I went by myself and it was a 20 minute wait on a Sunday, not bad at all. There is outdoor and indoor seating. I sat inside. The service was wonderful! My waitress was super attentive and helpful. I wanted the scramble but ended up going with a breakfast burrito with sausage, bacon, & mushroom. It did not disappoint, it was delicious and filling. The potatoes in the side decent as well, better with a little ketchup and hot sauce. I also had a Mocha to go and it was super yummy. The people next to me dining ordered some delicious looking dishes as well. We ended sparking up a conversation as I over heard they were in town for Jerry Seinfeld. They also randomly had known the waitress as a long time friend for over 55 years! I even took a picture for them lol. It was so random and awesome. If I could rate this place a 20 out of 5 I would. It was absolutely perfect... The food: WOW just WOW. We ordered the biscuits and gravy, traditional eggs Benedict, cinnamon roll pancake, and corned beef and hash. Guys the eggs benny and corn beef blew my mind. That corned beef was out of this world it's definitely made in and house and full of flavor. Large portions, and a total bang for your buck. I also loved that they allowed me to half portions of the eggs Benny and biscuits and gravy so I didn't feel forced to order either or. The cinnamon roll pancake was perfection, a MASSIVE portion lol. Definitely share this! Or don't no judgement here! The biscuits and gravy...I'd say they were just alright..considering they were competing against the corned beef, pancake, and eggs benny id still consider them a strong contender. The service: 20/10 so sweet, so kind, so attentive. We have an amazing waiter (Wesley or Wesleyan sorry!) but had easily three other people check on us through our meal. Speed of service is outstanding. The place is so cute, so quaint AND super dog friendly. They even have a small menu for them . If you're in town to visit Carmel by the Sea we 1000% recommend making a stop here for breakfast/brunch. It's a must! read more

This place was highly recommended and didn't disappoint! We had vanilla lattes, the extreme biscuits and gravy, and the build your own scramble. The cheddar biscuits were fantastic and addicting! I kept going back for another bite even though I was full. My husband enjoyed his scramble and both were large portions. We sat outside since we had our dogs; they even gave a dog menu. Inside had a cozy vibe and a nice fireplace. Service was fast and friendly. read more

Wow- this place is AMAZING! 1-BEST buttermilk pancakes I've ever had! 2- Over easy eggs with biscuits and gravy plus a side of red potatoes. What a hearty, satisfying meal. 3- Egg white Big Sur omelet with side of sourdough and fresh tomatoes. Incredible. Servings were huge, prices are very reasonable, and most of all the food here is really delicious. Wonderful ambiance, located in a very cute shopping center! A must try! read more

From Scratch Restaurant Lovely little brunch spot hidden away in a little plaza. Friendly vibes with indoor and outdoor seating (plenty of heaters). Had a good feeling about this place once I sat down and am glad to report that it is a fantastic brunch spot! I got The Triple D Sampler Plate (19.95) which included: extreme sausage biscuits and gravy with 2 sunny side eggs, a side of your choice (cheesy grits) and house made brisket chili. I have never been a super big fan of chili but it wasn't too shabby here. The rest of the sampler plate was amazing though. The biscuits were so flavorful, drenched in that tasty gravy. Super super filling, I had trouble finishing the plate. The cheesy grits were amazing, just an explosion of cheese! Will be back next time I make another trek to Monterey read more

The best breakfast spot in Carmel! Whenever I'm in town, stopping by here is an absolute must. They have outdoor and indoor seating and I love the color and decor they use for the restaurant. The service is always fantastic, and the food really tasty. I usually make my own omelet and get the cinnamon roll pancakes. The veggies used for the omelet and the side of tomatoes are all so fresh. I came here once around Valentine's Day and they even had the cutest heart pancakes! read more
Im not a breakfast food person but since we left home early on a empty stomach I had to stop by this gem I was recommended by a friend. We were sat immediately on a Friday morning. Drinks came to the table like an act of magic super quickly. Now the food, the food the chili was so unique due to the beef chunks, the skillet had beef chorizo which was good in taste pretty much tasted like if it were pork. French toast was nicely coated with cinnamon and sugar and not dry. The club had this unique taste that I really loved. Definitely recommend!! read more

My family and I decided to try out another Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives recommendation. I went with the Triple D Sampler which includes the infamous biscuits and gravy with eggs cooked to your liking and the house made brisket chili. I thought that the star was going to be the biscuits and gravy, I was wrong!! That brisket chili will knock your socks right off! The brisket is so tender and delicious, you can just taste the hours of simmering deliciousness melting in your mouth!! The service was great as our waiter was very kind and checked in on us more than once. They also have a cute gift shop located right next to the restaurant. When my husband and kids went in to purchase something they were attended to by none other than the chef himself! I love the family feeling of this place! Don't sleep in the cinnamon roll pancakes either, you will not be disappointed! read more
Who doesn't love a meal made from scratch? This popular brunch spot is my companion's favorite so on our trip to Monterey I told him I wanted to come here! I felt like I was in a cozy cottage-core-like place while enjoying a hearty meal! The restaurant is truly hidden and located on the bottom floor of the shopping plaza, the outside reminds me of a place out of a fairy tale with bricks. The restaurant is somewhat spacious with plenty of tables for small groups inside and a beautiful patio in the front as well. We were seated inside and admired the California-themed decor. Service was friendly and it seemed like a lot of diners were regulars. The chefs messed up on my companion's order and once we brought it to their attention they made a new plate for him! I'm a sucker for all things egg, especially for brunch. I went for the Make Your Own Omelette with a Side of Fruit. I love how they let you design your own dish which is great for picky eaters like me! You're allowed four toppings and I chose: Turkey, Spinach, Avocado, and Yellow Onions. The omelette was perfect--savory, hearty, and slightly sweet. My side of toast wasn't anything special and the fruit that came along with it was okay but not fresh. Though I did love the hot sauce on the table which added a kick! My companion ordered the Corned Beef Hash & Eggs which is his favorite and he demolished it! If you're on the hunt for brunch in the Monterey area then I suggest From Scratch! The restaurant is located inside the Barnyard Shopping Center with plenty of free parking throughout. The restaurant is a bit hard to find on the bottom floor but it's a true gem! Service is superb, the food is delicious and Guy Fieri approved and the ambiance is casual and fun. I can see why this is one of my companion's favorites and I'd love to come back in the future! read more
I really enjoyed breakfast at From Scratch, despite the occasional visit from a bee or two. A very cute and cozy cafe tucked away in a nice shopping area with a cute farmer's market on certain days. I really wanted eggs Benedict and this hit the spot! Perfectly cooked eggs, nicely seasoned potatoes, a lovely hollandaise sauce. We also got their French toast since it was highly recommended - I thought it was fresh and tasty, but nothing to write home about. I've had more exciting French toast. The service was friendly and as frequent as we needed. There's also a cute little shop attached to the cafe with home goods and accessories that you can browse after the meal. We had a very nice time for a random Tuesday morning. Do recommend dropping in as you're on your way to other activities in the area! read more

Stop by to visit from scratch since I was in town for the weekend and had a good things about. It. Came to try it out. We only had to wait. About 20 minutes to be seated which wasn't bad. I had the triple D sampler loved the potatoes and eggs, but felt the sausage needed a little bit more flavor. The biscuits were really good. My partner had the B.L.A.T. With the brisket chili which was REALLY GOOD . Atmosphere was good and service was as well and portions were big!! read more
