Omg the breakfast was so delicious! The pancakes were huge, but super yummy! I can't remember exactly what the hubby's breakfast was called, so sorry, but we loved it as well and the portions are enormous! The coffee was nice and strong, we loved everything and the service, fabulous, fast and friendly.
On a recent trip to the Bay Area we had a chance to swing by the Monterey Peninsula on the way south and visit with a dear friend. This "young lady" and I have been great pals since 4th grade, and that was quite a while ago. Ahem! She's lived in Carmel since the early 80's and knows so many great places to go. She recommended From Scratch as a good spot to meet for breakfast. On a foggy morning, we parked on the exterior of The Barnyard and took a meandering path to find the restaurant. I had actually dined in that space many, many years ago. I don't even recall what it was called at that time. The From Scratch iteration is wonderful! It's cozy and charming on the inside. I didn't end up taking many pix inside as they were so consistently full of patrons that I didn't want to intrude on people's meals. They also have an outdoor patio area, which is kept warm by heaters, but my friend had scored a table inside near the fireplace, and that turned out to be a perfect place. The menu has all the breakfast favorites, but with their own little creative twists. It was hard to narrow down to a final choice of what to order. Service was excellent throughout, and our server had a just-right sense of humor. The portions are enormous!!! Dear Hubby and I could have easily split one plate and would have gone away completely full. If one is going to order whichever dish you choose, unless you haven't eaten for a week, I would plan that you'll be taking away leftovers. Their homemade sausage patties were superb with a subtle sweet taste that complimented the savory meat. Thick, fluffy French toast was so delicious with real maple syrup to drizzle on top. DH fully enjoyed his biscuits and gravy. I don't know how he ate as much as he did, but I did do most of the driving in the afternoon while he napped off that breakfast! It was so divine to visit with my sweet friend in such a lovely atmosphere while eating delicious food. What a wonderful start to the day! I can see this being a draw for locals and visitors alike.
Food Ordered the Triple D Sampler (biscuits and gravy, with eggs and a cup of brisket chili) - yum! I think the chili was my favorite part - flavorful and good texture. The gravy for the biscuits and gravy was spiced well. My husband got the cinnamon roll pancakes and a side of a bacon. He was pleased with his meal. Pancakes were huge! Our lattes were pleasant - good presentation and flavor. Service Our server was patient, friendly, and informative. Ambiance The restaurant had an elevated diner vibe, nothing felt dated. I saw that they had a homemade mole for their breakfast burritos. Would definitely come back to try that out.
While visiting Carmel for a single night before hitting the road to explore Big Sur, I was on the hunt for a breakfast that would be open early, casual vibes, and (of course) delicious! My Yelp search introduced From Scratch Restaurant which satisfied all of my requirements but seeing that they were featured on Triple D is what sealed the deal. So I found myself (and my husband) inside the cozy diner shortly after they opened at 8am. If I could give half stars, I would give my experience a 3.5. The waitress had a lovely personality and was a pro at upselling (not mad at it). I ordered a single Granola Pancake and added a side of bacon and a fried egg. Thanks to the server's recommendation, I chose fresh blueberries and fresh banana to be cooked right into my pancake. It was the best pancake I have ever had!! Light and fluffy, little pockets of fruit bursting in my mouth, and the crunchy granola baked into the top! The servings are generous, so I ended up sharing some of my pancake with my husband and took a couple pieces of thick bacon to-go. My vanilla latte was served beautifully in a clear stein-style mug. It was quite hot, so I ended up taking it to-go since I did not drink much of it during my meal. However, after leaving, I realized the latte was burnt. My husband confirmed his black coffee also tasted burnt but he just kept adding sugar to it until he could drink it. I wish we had said something during the meal, but sadly the bad coffee brought my stars from a 4 down to a 3.5. I would definitely return for the pancake! If you need a cozy and casual diner breakfast, From Scratch is a fair choice.
Wow been a year. Could not wait for our return. Cool morning with our dog. Seated quickly on patio. Host turned on heater which was welcoming. Great open area with great ambiance. Server Nick was quickly out to our table. Bloody Marys ordered and quickly delivered. Food again was overloaded crazy plate. So what's wrong with that. Again another awesome experience. Looking forward to next year.
We were in town for a fun staycation anniversary trip vibe and decided to stop by this restaurant for a hearty breakfast meal before we enjoyed the rest of our day. I ended up ordering a veggie omelette with potatoes and sourdough toast. The portions were very generous, the food was well seasoned, I just knew I was going to look forward to my leftovers later lol. When we sat down, we were immediately offered water and coffee. Our food came out with a reasonable time and all of the staff was very kind and welcoming. this is a busy breakfast and brunch spot, it seemed that everyone was enjoying their meal. We sat outside on the patio area to enjoy our meal and coffee & definitely will stop again next time we're in the area.
Well, second visit to Monterey in past six months and of course this meant a return visit to one of our favorite restaurants, From Scratch! First of all, we lucked out because we were seated quickly and got the same amazing waiter, John. He always makes sure that we love our meals, he is friendly and attentive, the perfect waiter! Our meals were just as good this time as last. This time my husband and I both had omelets but with different sides. Let me just say, the portions are huge and will keep you full all day! The bacon is the best I have ever tasted anywhere and the cheesy grits were a unique and delish side. The eggs were so fluffy! I just love this place and wish I could go here every week! Whenever we go to the coast, this is a tradition now: breakfast at From Scratch!! Yummmm-o
We stop at this "mall" a few times a year on our way to/home from Camping in Big Sur. Had no idea this breakfast/brunch gem was hidden away & would definitely stop here again. Don't come here if you are in a rush or want something fast! The positives: fantastic dark roast coffee (free refills), huge meal portions, great range of choices, excellent ingredients, everything made from scratch, and pricing was good value in out opinion. The challenges: long wait time (we visited on a Sunday 11:30/primetime) -we waited 45-60 minutes to be seated & took a bit for our food to arrive but appreciated the coffee & endless refills (be aware its 5.50 per person). I ordered the skillet with Eggs scrambled & choice of 3 items. I chose bacon, onions & topped with sliced avocado served over potatoes & i had the homemade cheese biscuit which was a wonderful complement served with homemade marmalade. And i requested a side of pico de gallo (tasted homemade) that made it perfect. My hubby had the wrap which is the burrito with 3 items -he chose bacon avocado & jalapeno) and had a side of potatoes. The burrito had a mole sauce on it that might have been better served on the side. His potatoes tasted overly salty. Would definitely come here again to try the eggs benedict, or French toast, or pancakes or hamburger---so many good things passed by our table. If you are not in a hurry and want a very filling brunch this is your place. And if you have to wait for a table, looked like you could order mimosas and bloody mary's in the store while you wait.
We came to From Scratch on our way back to LA. I was excited to find that this place featured on the Food Network. We ordered the French toast and the From scratch breakfast roll. We thought the food was over all ok, I did wish the breakfast roll wasn't covered in the sauce. The food felt average but solid. Fairly generous portions. The place was pretty busy but we got seated quickly.
This place was excellent! Recently visited after getting a recommendation from an employee at the hotel we were staying at. Located in a shopping center that is full of shops and eateries. It's located inside on the lower level. The service that we received was very friendly and we felt cared for by the staff. Most importantly the food was PHENOMENAL. The portions were large. The dishes were flavorful and the ingredients tasted fresh. I can't wait to go back and visit whenever I'm in the area.
My bf and I came early on a Sunday morning and it was busy!! We got lucky and got seats inside but it was definitely very crowded. The huge portions kept us satiated for hours after and we were made to feel right at home by the amazing service. We would definitely come back to try more of their menu the next time we're in town. Finding the restaurant is definitely a little bit confusing but such a cute area to explore. My bf ordered the corn beef hash with potatoes and cheese biscuit (3.5/5): We loved the fluffiness of the cheese biscuit and it went well with the jam provided. Potatoes were very well seasoned. while the corned beef hash was flavorful, it was also a bit dry which was disappointing. The potatoes included with the hash were very flavorful as well. Because of the beef hash being dry though he'd probably skip this next time. I ordered the Sausage benedict with fresh fruit (4/5): Creamy, saucy, and very delicious. The inclusion of mushrooms and onions in this Benedict added a nice texture and helped break up some of the heaviness from the dish. Loved that the English muffin used was soft and easy to cut into.
This was a pretty busy brunch spot even at 8AM! We were seated immediately but there were already a good amount of tables taken inside and outside. I got a breakfast skillet dish with chili, tomatoes, and mushrooms. The food was a little salty for my preference but otherwise, very delicious! The value is great! We shared 2 dishes between the 3 of us and we still had leftovers! This is a cosy brunch restaurant.

We had an amazing time! Every employee we interacted with was genuinely so kind. It was chilly outside, but it felt perfect because of the outdoor heaters. The brisket was the perfect texture and tasted so good with the breakfast skillet. Finding fresh biscuits is so hard nowadays, but I love how even the biscuits were so fresh. Definitely would be returning next time I'm in Carmel for brunch! read more

Came here early Saturday morning with a group of friends and was seated right away with no wait time. The restaurant provided indoor and outdoor seating. The food was delicious. My friends enjoyed their meals. I had ordered the cinnamon roll pancake and the carmel omelette. The pancake was crispy tasting the cinnamon per bite. Couldn't finish the pancake and saved it for two days, pancake had its texture if you toast it for a few minutes. The omelette was really good paired with the fruit cup. Overall it was a good relaxing sit back vibe at this breakfast spot. Will be back when I'm in Carmel again. read more

My boyfriend and I were visiting Monterey and we were looking forward to eat here. When we arrived, the ambiance was nice. We were told it would be a 20 minute wait which we did not mind. However, after we were seated and situated in the outdoor patio area, we began to browse the menu. We waited an additional 10-15 minutes before our waiter checked in on us. Our assigned waiter was an older white woman who appears to be in her late 50s. Shortly after, a white older couple sat at the table beside my partner and I. The waiter glanced at us and proceeded to take the couple's entire order ranging from drinks to their meal. We did not want to draw attention to it as we initially thought it was a mistake. She checked in with us after and began taking our orders to drink. We continued to sharing, adding that we were ready to add our food order and mid sentence she walked away to attend to a second couple who was also white, sitting further down our left to take their entire order as well. My boyfriend made an attempt to say "Excuse me" and she made a hang gesture and mumbled under her breath. She never took our order. My boyfriend and I, in the moment, felt disrespected and felt discriminated against. We understand the demand of running a business but this employee single handedly caused distress during our visit. We want to highlight John as well as the other incredibly lovely employees who enhanced our experience and who emulate that kind hearted people still exist. John made our visit feel so memorable and the other employees were so friendly, it really made up for the discrimination we had felt. The food was delicious and overall, I want to wish John, the manager and the rest of the team an infinite thank you for keeping customer service and kindness at the forefront of what you all do. read more
gravy was delicious. very flavorful and tasted delicious. the potatoes and the meat inside the gravy were decent, wasn't the biggest fan. the pancake was good but nothing special. the fruits tastes great. service was nice. it was very crowded and busy in the morning. we waited around 20-30 minutes. inside is a bit tight but has lots of seating. overall, gravy is worth coming back for again! read more

We got there first thing in the morning. It wasn't busy and had the coziest vibes. We got a table right next to a fireplace and it was heavenly to sip on coffee with the warm fire. My husband and I both ordered scrambles and were not disappointed. SO tasty and so much food. Highly recommend and will be coming back to eat soon. read more

This place was a little hard to find for my first time visiting Carmel, but it was a cute little spot. They had indoor and outdoor seating and I did see cute dogs in outdoor seating! They had a little giftshop while you wait to be seated. I was pleasantly surprised by how much avocado came on my omelette. It was not mindblowingly amazing but it was solid and I was stuffed. The sides were okay and didn't really stand out to me, but again, not bad. read more

The service is pretty quick, as we were still ordering and they had already brought drinks out to our table. The cinnamon roll pancake was an absolute must as well as their home style potato. Came here on a Monday afternoon in late December 2024 via car. There was plenty of free parking in the plaza. They welcomed dogs and seated us under a heat lamp on the patio. I didn't have to make reservations and there wasn't a wait when I went. Their food was great and so was their service. It was everything you'd expect from a cafe. They even had a dog-friendly menu! I ordered the eggs for my dog. They make it with 2 eggs and my dog loved it. I also ordered the hot cocoa and the Veggie Eggs Benedict with fruit. Everything was yummy and fresh. That hollandaise sauce was perfect! They actually have me the Eggs Benedict with sausage but I wasn't mad about it. I'd highly recommend this place. The staff was friendly and attentive. read more

This place has some of the best brunch I've ever had. The portions are HUGE! The omelette was soft and packed with toppings. I loved the potatoes and ended up getting so full I couldn't even touch the bread. I ordered a side of the sausage links, and they were full of flavor! I loved my experience here and would definitely come back again whenever I'm visiting Carmel. The inside is very homey and feels like a cabin almost. It has a warm and inviting atmosphere. There is also an outdoor patio section if you wanted to enjoy your food outside! The service was awesome. Our server talked to us for a couple minutes about how plans for the day and gave us advice. I love creating conversation and having human interactions with servers, so that was a sweet memory. Highly recommend this place! (expect to wait if you're coming on a weekend though!) read more

Service was very good and our waitress was attentive. We arrived at 9:44 AM (time was circled on our receipt, implying tables only have 1 hour exactly to eat and pay) and about 5 minutes later there were 10-12 people in line. It's worth it to come early. We both ordered biscuits and gravy which were definitely a letdown. The bread was not really a biscuit and the gravy arrived lukewarm at best. Guy Fieri wouldn't be impressed with the biscuits we received and neither were we. What made up for the lackluster biscuits was the cinnamon roll pancake and the house made brisket chili. We would most definitely come back just for these dishes. The restaurant is somewhat hard to find but is in a really cool plaza filled with flowers. read more

Cute spot in Carmel - It's definitely a place to come for breakfast without the kids! We ordered the French toast, biscuits and gravy, and omelette. Drinks we ordered the guava mimosa, mango mimosa, and coffee. Biscuits and gravy were okay (not my absolute favorite) but the potatoes and omelette were fire! Our drinks were also SO good! read more

We chose this place since it was close to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and we wanted a hearty, affordable, no-frills place after our morning hike. It's a 7 minute drive away, a 5 minute wait during the week for brunch, and it was exactly what we were looking for! We all ordered our choice of breakfast (from hearty, meaty, to vegetarian) and everyone seemed happy with their choices. I'd go back for their chili and their guava mimosa (which was recommended by our server). They give big portions so two of us had to-go boxes. Highly recommend if you're looking for breakfast diner food and nothing fancy. (Go to the shops by Ocean Ave area if you're looking for more upscale dining). read more

First breakfast in Carmel, we must be at From Scratch. Wife had a half omelette that she enjoyed. I had a side order of biscuit and gravy along with a bowl of brisket chili. Came on a Sunday and there can be a bit of a wait but there is a cute gift shop to walk around and the area itself is very cute! The cinnamon roll pancake is amazing, I can't recommend it enough. It has a bit of a caramelizes crunchy texture on top and the pancake itself is also very fluffy. The eggs Benedict was also great! My only thing is that one egg was a bit overdone while the other was more under but it was delicious. They have indoor and outdoor seating :) read more

The food was so delicious. Every single dish was served perfectly. The service was very timely as we went almost towards the end of closing hours. We sat outside and the weather was perfect. It's hidden on the lower level of a strip mall and towards the rear side, so a bit difficult to find. But once you locate it you will keep coming back again. It's a bit far from San Jose, but the food is so good that it's almost worth the drive and while you are at it, enjoy Carmel-by-the-sea. read more

Service was done nicely and quickly! Our server was clearly very experienced and checked on us often, drinks were quick as well as we had mango and guava mimosas. Pancakes were yummy! Probably wouldn't get the huevos rancheros again though! nothing special unfortunately, but it's good simple food:) will definitely come again into this fun and welcoming place. read more

An absolute must visit when in the area. I always have the eggs Benedict. But everything looks good. They have an extensive menu of breakfast items, sandwiches and more. The Canadian bacon on the traditional Benedict was truly ham. Not Canadian bacon, but a delicious slice of ham. Still absolutely delicious and I cleaned my plate. Service impeccable. My friends and I sat there for a while visiting and I never felt rushed. A huge line and crowded. But a family vibe. And of course, Guy Fieri, from Diners, drive ins and dives, visited here, making it famous. Come here. Do yourself a favor. SYOY! read more
We went here because of the reviews and because it was on the way to Point Lobos. There was plenty of parking on a Saturday around 11am. When we got to the restaurant we had to wait about 15 minutes. Once we got seated, our waiter took our drink order right away and got our drinks in less than ten minutes. My screwdriver did taste light. Once our waiter took our food order, our food came out in less than fifteen minutes. My son's quesadilla was good and cheesy. My French toast felt dry and I added a lot of syrup to take some of the dryness away. My husband's Benedict needed more flavor and one of the eggs was not poached right. Not sure if we would go back and order other food, but it was disappointing. read more

Our favorite place in Carmel for breakfast. Love the doggies menu. Doggie eggs looked like 3 eggs. So yummy. Gave doggie a water bowl. Have heat lamp outside which is nice. This place was BUSY. We were staying at the Carmel Mission Inn, a short walk over. We came around 11am and waited around an hour to get seated. Our table for 2 was right by the entrance at the booths, very tight space I would not recommend for anyone with a big built. I'm average size and it was very tight to go between the tables into the booth. Our server was very nice. We ordered the traditional eggs Benedict with a mimosa (guava and mango). Everything was great, the potatoes were seasoned so well and probably my favorite! Portions were also very big, definitely had leftovers. If you go during a busy time, there's a lot to walk/look at around the plaza while you wait for your table. read more
