We wanted a good brunch on the first full day of our trip to Monterey and San Francisco, knowing that we would have a full day of hiking after. From Scratch is in a quaint and inviting shopping center, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Very busy on a Sunday, great energy. The service was awesome while we waited and browsed their attached gift shop. I give it 4/5 stars because the restaurant is comfortable, the service is great and so is the value. The portions are huge with fair pricing. The food itself I would classify as 3/5. The pancakes are very good and the biscuits and gravy excellent. The skillet I thought was disappointing as the different parts didn't go well together and the portion of potatoes was too large. The eggs are pretty good too, quite fluffy for those who prefer it that way. The chili, which is something that they say is one of their specialties, I thought was terrible. Tasted like something out of a can with some cheap cheese on top. All in all, if you want classic breakfast food with big portions, go here. Just avoid the chili.

I came here for brunch and it was very busy. We waited for 15-20 minutes, but walked around the boutiques nearby. This place was jam packed but we heard great things about the food. We were seated, but the table was a little small for our food. We ordered a coffee and our food. The food came out within 10-15 minutes. The portions were very good and the food was hot. I liked my omelette and my bf got the Benedict. I also learned tha Guy Fieri featured this spot on his show. The service was great, but because it was loud and crowded, it was was hard to hear across the table. The food was definitely delicious and I would be back when I visit.

Food was fantastic and service was friendly. Sat outside on a beautiful sunny day. The place was packed so get ready to wait. The wait was really fast tho. Food was delicious and hot. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs. They give big portions and the corned beef is fresh and cooked to perfection. I enjoy a little crisp on the beef. My partner ordered the huevos rancheros. He devoured the whole dish and enjoyed every flavor. We love to bring our dog with us on our many adventures and this place is very dog friendly. They have a doggie menu and ordered scrambled eggs. Our dog loved them. They give big portions so we were able to take some home. Great place. I'd come back again

Best pancakes I've ever had! We stopped in Carmel during a recent Highway 1 trip and stumbled upon this gem while looking for a brunch spot. My husband and I shared the Triple D Sampler and banana walnut pancakes, along with a latte. Everything was delicious, and there was so much food! The chili was especially flavorful, with tender brisket, and the pancakes were incredible. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather. There was a short wait, but my kids had fun browsing the shop while we waited, and they even found a few reasonably priced activity items for the road. Great food, friendly atmosphere, and definitely a must-visit when in the area!

We had an incredible experience at this pet friendly restaurant! Not only that, but our Frenchie whose name is Bubbles got to meet a server also nicknamed Bubbles. Picture attached. We had the corn beef and hash. It had amazing flavor with huge chunks of corn beef. It was absolutely delicious. We also had a bowl of their chili brisket. Fantastic flavor, and lots of chunky brisket. I did have them heat it up prior to being delivery. I like all my liquid meals, extra hot. Just a personal preference. It was still delivered lukewarm. If there was one thing I would say, because this place was incredible from the servers to the food and to the fact that they allow pets. It would be to the young lady that cleaned and straightened tables and her RBF. You're working at an incredible restaurant, with incredible food, in an incredible town. SMILE!! Enjoy your surroundings and all the people around you. Life is short and a smile won't hurt you. AND it will bring smiles to all of the people around you. You're beautiful.

We stuffed ourselves here but loved every bit of it. My husband ordered biscuits and gravy, with eggs and potatoes and a side of chili! I ordered eggs, potatoes and potatoes and we shared the churros/ cinnamon pancake! We still talk about that pancake- it was just right on the cinnamon and sugar. Service was super friendly and attentive. We did arrive right when they opened, good thing because quickly this place had a wait list! Plan accordingly and enjoy your service and meal!

Really tasty breakfast spot in Carmel that definitely gets busy, so expect a wait during peak times. The food was worth it though, and everything tasted fresh and homemade like the name suggests. Loved the little store attached to the restaurant too. It was fun to browse after eating. The surrounding shopping area is also really nice to walk around and explore. A highlight for my daughter was the Mickey Mouse pancake! Overall a solid stop if you're visiting Carmel and looking for a good breakfast or brunch spot.

We visited because this restaurant was on Diner's Drive ins and Dives, so we had to get the Triple D plate! The portions are huge and so delicious. There's a variety of sides for each dish too. My favorite was the fried grits ; it might be my favorite breakfast side ever! The bowl of chili on the triple D plate was also massive. We also had the French toast which was a nice balance of sweetness with all the savory foods. There was 45 min wait when we got there on a Sunday afternoon, but we just walked around the plaza and got a coffee while we waited. Theres tons of outdoor seating, and very dog friendly. Would definitely return!

Corned beef hash

Very big portion. Good brunch spot and very popular on a weekend. Tasty but would be nice if the house potatoes were crispier. Corned beef hash had a good amount of corned beef but a bit dry.

On a recent trip to the Bay Area we had a chance to swing by the Monterey Peninsula on the way south and visit with a dear friend. This "young lady" and I have been great pals since 4th grade, and that was quite a while ago. Ahem! She's lived in Carmel since the early 80's and knows so many great places to go. She recommended From Scratch as a good spot to meet for breakfast. On a foggy morning, we parked on the exterior of The Barnyard and took a meandering path to find the restaurant. I had actually dined in that space many, many years ago. I don't even recall what it was called at that time. The From Scratch iteration is wonderful! It's cozy and charming on the inside. I didn't end up taking many pix inside as they were so consistently full of patrons that I didn't want to intrude on people's meals. They also have an outdoor patio area, which is kept warm by heaters, but my friend had scored a table inside near the fireplace, and that turned out to be a perfect place. The menu has all the breakfast favorites, but with their own little creative twists. It was hard to narrow down to a final choice of what to order. Service was excellent throughout, and our server had a just-right sense of humor. The portions are enormous!!! Dear Hubby and I could have easily split one plate and would have gone away completely full. If one is going to order whichever dish you choose, unless you haven't eaten for a week, I would plan that you'll be taking away leftovers. Their homemade sausage patties were superb with a subtle sweet taste that complimented the savory meat. Thick, fluffy French toast was so delicious with real maple syrup to drizzle on top. DH fully enjoyed his biscuits and gravy. I don't know how he ate as much as he did, but I did do most of the driving in the afternoon while he napped off that breakfast! It was so divine to visit with my sweet friend in such a lovely atmosphere while eating delicious food. What a wonderful start to the day! I can see this being a draw for locals and visitors alike.

Woah! This was seriously one of the best breakfasts I've had in a while! The portions are HUGE, so definitely come hungry! I don't usually love chili, but theirs was SO good and honestly a must-try! The location is pretty tight, which I wasn't the biggest fan of, but the service was quick and the staff were super friendly!

Wow, what a delicious and fun breakfast spot! We came in on a Thursday around 11:30 am and were able to be immediately seated. It was quite busy outside, but we found a nice spot in the shade. Once we started to order, a lot of the people started to leave and there was only a couple other parties outside. For once I was hungry AND actually able to order while thinking about portion sizes. Normally my eyes are more hungry than my stomach! I had one banana walnut pancake and still couldn't finish it. My partner ordered the breakfast skillet with chorizo, mushrooms, and avocado. Both were exceptionally delicious, and the skillet especially with their homemade bottled pepper sauce. It's available to purchase but they ran out when we were visiting. The pancake had bananas or walnuts in every bite, if not both. The maple syrup was also heated up so it made for a very pleasant experience. I'm normally a savory breakfast gal, but this called to me, and I'm so glad I went with it. And the skillet wasn't that spicy but packed tons of flavor. I could taste some smoke paprika, garlic powder, and a pleasant amount of salt and pepper. We enjoyed our time here, and since the business was slowing down, we were able to chat with our waiter and get some ideas for local spots to try. 10/10, we will be back again! :) Thank you so much!

Omg the breakfast was so delicious! The pancakes were huge, but super yummy! I can't remember exactly what the hubby's breakfast was called, so sorry, but we loved it as well and the portions are enormous! The coffee was nice and strong, we loved everything and the service, fabulous, fast and friendly.

I really hope whoever represents Mr. Eastwood and The Mission reads this and addresses it appropriately. We didn't have reservations, we had read the reviews and knew the food was good. We got there in the middle of the week, it was busy. We were greeted by one of the hostesses, super nice and were told the wait was 45 minutes. No problem, the bar was open and we sat to grab a few drinks. The bar staff, AWESOME and funny. This is when we met the lady of the house, the woman who I would describe as the lead hostesses. 5-5, skinny, sharp facial features, very pale and the attitude to match. She greeted several people who just walked in ( we had been waiting 20 minutes already), local patrons. She immediately ORDERED the front wait staff to sit 2 parties of 4, they got moved to the front of the line. She did not make contact with us, the simple people, she actually smirked when she looked in our direction. This is when I noticed the shift in attitude from the wait staff. Prior to her arrival, they were happily working smiling and joking with each other. She walked in and it's like Cruella had arrived . She disappeared back in the food preparation area and came back out and again, she took 2 parties ahead of us and seated them personally. They did not have reservations ( I overheard the conversation) . We didn't mind the wait, it was the attitude. When we finally were seated, the staff was " Johnny on the spot" with thier service and attitude. The food, off the hook. I had steak, done just right, buttery. She had fish cooked to perfection. When the waiter heard we were celebrating our anniversary, they brought a nice dessert, free. I watched in interest Cruella maneuver around the restaurant , I watched how the staff reacted around her and how she treated guests. Mission Ranch, if you are losing employees regularly, this person might be the cause of that. I don't want to play the race card but I will say this, those of us that were not a " Billy" or a " Buffy" were treated differently.

However, it wasn't memorable enough for me to order again. Vanilla Cardamom Latte -- $7.50 The cardamom was SUPER strong, and I felt like it overpowered everything else. The description mentioned rich espresso and creamy vanilla, but both were definitely lacking. Velvet Noir -- $7.50 This tasted as described: dark chocolate and cherry espresso. It was not overwhelmingly sweet. Service deserves a shoutout! Despite my mixed feelings about the drinks, the service was AMAZING! The cashier was super friendly and even made a special pup treat for my dog, which I genuinely appreciated. My dog absolutely loved it! As an avid coffee drinker, I'm not sure I'd personally consider this one of the "best coffee shops" based on the drinks alone. I was hoping for stronger espresso flavors, especially given the recognition and price point. That said, the customer service and dog-friendly atmosphere were fantastic! I didn't get a chance to rent a bike this time, but I'd definitely stop by again on my next visit to Carmel. Maybe I'll have better luck with a different drink next time!
