We finally got to go to From Scratch and it was amazing! The food was really good and they have such great costumer service. The host Danika was such a wonderful hostess and Martin, our server, made sure we had everything we wanted. They both went above and beyond to make sure our experience was a good one. On a recent, subsequent visit this restaurant, which in the past I gave 5 stars, based on several visits, has gone downhill, sadly. After a very long wait for the food to arrive, the bacon I asked for to be crispy was fatty and limp, and my husband's eggs Benedict had a hard cooked egg and it didn't have much flavor. Two tables near us had food items deducted from their bills, one because the French toast was soggy and not cooked. In all fairness to the Chef, it looked like the restaurant got hit all at once, but a good establishment should plan for that on a Saturday morning. My favorite breakfast place in Carmel. The portions are huge half the time me and my husband split it. They have the best Traditional Eggs Benedict according to my husband. I love the veggie eggs Benedict and they let us do half and half which I think is awesome. The also have a great huevos rancheros and pretty much everything else we have had here is awesome. Those are just my two favs. They have fresh preserves to put on your toast and I have never had a bad experience. Ordered an omelette (onion, swiss, beef chirizo, mushroom & spinach) but got green onion instead of regular onions. It an ok omelette though. I really liked the crunchy potatoes that came with it. I tried some of the huevos rancheros and boy, was that good! It was already cold when I got to it but it was so much better than my omelette! I hear the coffee here is ok/decent here. I ordered the eggs benedict. Egg was cooked solid. Ham under egg was good but I prefer Canadian bacon. I wouldn't order again. Disappointed. Other person with me had side of biscuit and gravy with fruit. Very good size portion with good flavor, but other breakfast places have got it beat. Do not go here if ur in a rush. Should have been a 1-star. Went this morning, waited 30-minutes (we were told only a 15-minute wait) and we were still waiting until we complained about the wait. We ordered right away but it took more than 35 minutes to get our food. Only had 10minutes to eat because my daughter had to be somewhere, we didn't appreciate having to eat in a hurry. The food portions seemed much smaller than in the past; are the serving sizes smaller so they dont have to raise prices?? Not sure if I would go back right away until I hear about better service and portion size! read more

Hands down the BEST breakfast on the peninsula. Definitely not generic diner food; every dish has its own twist and is uniquely delicious. Place is nestled in shopping complex, and was a little hard to find. It was a little after 10am on a Sat and were surprised to be seated immediately. A nice man came to get our drink order (he was not our waiter). We waited about 20 mins before we asked the gentlemen who brought our drinks if he knew who our waiter was as they still had not come by. He apologized and made an inquiry to a waiter about who would be taking our order. At this point our assigned waiter, I believe his name was John(?), came to take our order. He made no apology or make any reference to excuse his delay. He very dryly took our order. An order that took 35 mins to get. I ordered eggs Benedict and my sister ordered the Sausage Biscuit & Gravy. My EB came with red potatoes, which were luke warm. One of the toast for the EB was burnt (making it too difficult to cut) while the other was half toasted. My sister's order came with grits which were also a bit cold. The hot sauce at table (their own brand available for sale) was near empty and I placed out to have it refilled with no avail. Our table was in the center and we were constantly bumped into by staff jolting our drinks, again with no apology. Restrooms were filthy. Floor appeared as though it had never been cleaned. It was dirty and the grime within the grout was disgusting. Place is over-rated and the quality and service (lack of) received is not worthy. read more

Best biscuits and sausage gravy I've ever had! I went at peak time on Sunday and waited maybe 4 minutes. Great restaurant!

Heard great reviews, so we took a chance for breakfast. Stood at the door for a few minutes, then walked in before anyone acknowledged us. Finally, caught someone's attention and seated near the middle, by the fireplace. Waited quite a while for menus, then a little longer for water, then more to order. They were fairly busy, but as we had plenty of time to spectate, others were getting greeted, served, etc. Even noting some "regulars" that had showed up and given much priority and immediate attention like a long-lost family member. Our server, Gerard was really blowing us off, even as we attempted to get his attention multiple times. Hard to even flag others down to ask for water, silverware, coffee... Even getting the bill, after asking a couple times, was a spell before it finally arrived. We had activities planned that morning, but ended up spending over an hour, which forced us to eat quite fast. On a positive, the food was pretty good. Egg skillet and banana/granola pancakes (which were absolutely huge!) Because we had to eat so fast, I could only finish about a half of a pancake. Interesting observation...from a restaurant claiming "expect a homemade meal prepared with the freshest ingredients and cooked to perfection by an expert chef just seconds before it is served" with artificial high fructose sugar Log Cabin syrup?! ...unless you ask and pay an extra $2 for a 2oz plastic shot of real maple syrup - what the hell?! Shouldn't that come standard from this farm-fresh, homemade and/or from scratch locale?! $10.95 for a half pancake - hmmmm. (Chefs Guy & Robert would agree?) Sorry Steve.... My wife and I have been eating here for over 10 years. Whenever we go to Monterey/Carmel, we make a point of eating at least one breakfast at From Scratch. Simply put, it's one of the best breakfasts made from fresh ingredients you can find and good coffee too. Usually, I get the huevos rancheros which are the best I've ever eaten; but, this time I had the biscuits and gravy. Once again, the best I've ever eaten. Flawless Victory I was introduced to this place via a colleague, and all of my experiences there were virtually the same: breakfast with the Mrs. on a weekend. Each time I ate there, I ordered either the breakfast burrito or the breakfast skillet, and without fail, they absolutely crushed it time and time again. In retrospect, I probably should have ordered something else, but if it works, why change? My wife would often get the skillet, but she varied it once in a while by ordering pancakes or another entrée, and she echoed my sentiment above. Unfortunately, she did have an occasion or two where her latte was not 100%, but this is my review, and I can say that each time I ate there, it was perfect. Go to From Scratch, and get there early. One of the best omelettes I have ever tasted, Pebble Beach omelette. Quite nontraditional with stir fried shrimp, crab, mushroom and green onion; shrimp and crab are incredibly fresh whilst a good choice of mushroom adds the juiciness on top of that. Went after reading Yelp reviews and found it is definitely the real deal for breakfast. Had traditional eggs benedict and my wife had smoked salmon eggs benedict. Both were very good, however, be aware that when you order the benedict dish they ask if you want eggs poached "soft, medium or hard". My wife ordered medium just to be sure whites were fully cooked, but found the yolk was over-cooked that way. As "soft" mine were what you would want; white cooked, yolk runny. Smoked salmon in her benedict was a bit too salty for her taste. We also shared a blue berry pancake with strawberries and sliced bananas, just to see what it was like and it was super! Am eating here now and I will preface by saying it is Mother's Day. However, my family waited 25 min. For two of us to be given our order OUT of 5 people! The rest of us waited 12 min. With no food and the food that was delivered was now cold. Super! Finally my husband went to tell the manager that we hadn't received our full order and they seemed to have forgotten about the rest of our order but WOULD NOT admit to it and kept telling me that the griddle was cold and so the new pancakes were beige in color instead of brown. WHAAAAAT??!! Steve, the manager, who needs to take a class in customer service, kept talking to me about the griddle while the people around us were being given their orders, fresh coffee and refills which we were not offered until we had to ask, and a table directly in front of us were seated and given their order of pancakes and I believe eggs in about 10 min. While my two sons still had not been given their pancakes. Why? Why are other people around us receiving pancakes that were nice and brown and two of my kids had no food at all and then when their pancakes WERE finally brought out they were beige so I had to send them back so they could be remade properly. Again, Steve said the griddle was cold. HUh? Then how were other people getting toasty brown fluffy pancakes? My children had now been waiting about 30 min. After being seated and already had waited 30 min. To finally EAT. Steve would not admit that they had forgotten about the rest of our order until another waitress came over and apologized and said mistakes get made. I KNOW that but Steve kept trying to blame a cold griddle which was so nonsensical and ridiculous since OTHER PEOPLE AROUND US WERE BEING SERVED FLUFFY BROWN PANCAKES!! Finally, they kept asking what they could do to make me happy. So, I said whatever they usually do and Steve wished me a happy day and left. The waitress who was genuinely nice and tried to be accommodating and did her best to be honest with me which I appreciated stayed so I could again explain to her what had happened and I finally said I wasn't going to pay the bill which, frankly, should have been the first thing they offered me after realizing they FORGOT about my other two kids' orders. Anyhow, 2 stars for th waitress who was honest and for the food which was pretty good. Nice omelet with sauteed veggies and good fluffy pancakes. Amen. read more

Nice breakfast place! I was being very healthy and ordered the steel cut oatmeal. It was cooked perfectly, I liked the steamed milk and raisins. I added walnuts and fruit. It was very filling. I tasted the hash my hubby had and it was very good! They give large portions so you definitely don't leave hungry!
