I came for highlights. After they colored my hair and washed it, I started noticing that something was wrong, because the women kept touching my roots like trying to find the color, I guess and then we went to the mirror to see the result (which I didn't see at all) and she was looking with a disappointed face asking: "do you like it?". After I asked why they didn't color my roots, she came with a hairdresser and he said it looked good and that's how highlights should look BUT if I want to, they can color my roots and I paid $250 for that. *Disclaimer: worst experience of my life and I spent days crying. The salon offered to have me come in for a fix, but I didn't trust them. I normally don't use my real name on Yelp but this was so atrocious I'm willing to have it tied to my identity. I have been cutting my own hair for the last 8 years and decided to finally treat myself to a professional service. Honestly, my mistake for attempting that. My visit was a nightmare from the time I checked in. First, the stylist I originally booked with was someone I chose based on their listed experience with curly hair. He was unavailable due to a family emergency, which I understand. And I'm glad he could take the time off...but it was clear that reception was not expecting me despite never receiving a call to notify me it would be a different stylist or to ask to reschedule my appointment. Second, it was kind of them to try and squeeze me in but it was so clear that the stylist they dumped me onto did not have the time at all. Third, the consultation was short, my questions were barely answered, and he was uninterested in seeing the photos I brought in to show what I was looking for. Fourth, I have extremely curly hair and I attempted to explain my typical hair texture to him, but he insisted that "there's no way it's curly, I'd know if it was" after it was washed. Since it was clear he was set in his opinion, I went to find a photo of my natural thick and very curly hair on my phone and he was uninterested in seeing that as well. I should have just left at that point, but that's my mistake. I THOUGHT we had agreed on long layers with a few face-framing pieces but what I got was a 4-inch chop off the bottom with one blunt layer off each side of my head halfway up that I can only compare to a pseudo-bowl cut. My hair was thinned out so much that it barely made a bun on top of my head when I had a THICK BUN just the day before. It didn't look horrible when I left because it was blown out, but I said I did not want a blow out as I never wear my hair straight. This was yet another thing that was neither up for discussion nor worth the 1 minute of consideration. The girl who did it (she was lovely) could tell I was upset and even mentioned that the sides were uneven and she wasn't sure how to blow one side out properly because my hair was not cut based on the middle part I wear (this was also communicated to my stylist and halfway through I could tell this wasn't happening (pic below showing the uneveness of the two front strands), yet it was way too late so I just let it continue so I could get the h*ll out). I spent more time with the girl who washed my hair and the girl who dried it than I did with Chi, the stylist they passed me off to. I decided to go home and wash my hair to see what the damage truly was when my hair dried naturally. If you've ever seen the Big Bang Theory, I looked like a low-budget extra of Leonard after washing. Once curly, that weird a*s layer wouldn't fit back into my pony tail, leaving an ear-length bowl cut of curls sticking out (see pics below). When I tell you I sobbed for hours it's no exaggeration. I called the salon and left a message a few hours later and was told I could come back five days later when the original stylist returned. I asked to be called if there was an opening sooner, and I called more than once to periodically check, but yet again the communication was lacking. While they did offer a fix, their website states "Due to the nature of our services, NO REFUNDS will be granted. We stand by our services and will do everything to ensure your satisfaction." I'm really unsure how they could stand by how my hair was butchered so I opted to forgo the fix since the only thing that could be done would be to lose even more length and the only thing that would have made up for it was a refund. I literally cannot wait until this monstrosity of a cut grows out and had friends' stylists offer to try and salvage it for free. Safe to say I will never be returning. Aside from my atrocious experience, I believe it was Jack who gave my boyfriend a fantastic haircut. So 5 stars for him and thank you to only him. Book with caution and avoid Chi Elie at all costs if you have curly hair or you're looking for someone to listen to your concerns/requests. read more

i was really hoping to love and finally find a curly cut out in virigina .. but unfortunately i was left wanting. I recently moved out from DC where I first experienced and LOVED my curly cut/salon but was hoping not to have to driec back into the city and pay city prices every few months. Making the appointment was easy, parking was plenty, and i was seen pretty quickly. That is where the pros stopped. After a veryyyy quick consultation she began cutting my curls in a way i've never had them done. it reminded me of when i used to get it cut by people who have only cut straight hair before. after brushing out all my curls you couldn't see where they were falling so not sure how she approached the layers .. after the quick cut my hair was washed and then i was under the dryer FOREVER. to the point where it was becoming uncomfortably hot, my scalp was hurting and i pulled myself out from under it. looked over to find my stylist cutting someone elses hair while mine was drying guess that's why it took so long. i walked MYSELF over to the station bc my hair was now getting crisp and I needed to leave. The cut gave me more of the triangle shape and i had to come home and play with the placement to fix it. had high hopes but unfortunately didn't live up to it. As I stepped foot into the salon the atmosphere was calm and inviting, with friendly staff welcoming me as soon as I arrived. The salon is a lot bigger than what it looks from the outside. The interior was well designed and modern--very inviting. My stylist, Ronny, listened attentively as I explained that I wanted just a trim and not a drastic change. I've left other salons in the past with inches off when I only wanted a trim. Ronny skillfully managed to remove the damaged ends while preserving the length I wanted to keep. I don't usually write reviews, but I feel it's important to share my experience for anyone considering a curl cut here. I have 2C-3A fine curly hair, and all I wanted was a trim to add shape and volume. I came with reference photos to clearly show what I was hoping for. Unfortunately, my hair ended up flat with no volume, (like a triangular shape) and the products used were much too heavy for my hair type. The shape I received wasn't what I had in mind, and although the stylist offered to cut more, the length was already shorter than I had planned. After going home and clarifying my hair, I styled it with my own products, but my curls just wouldn't form. Given my past experiences with haircuts, I know my hair didn't react well because the layers weren't cut in a way that suited my hair type. I'm disappointed, as I was hoping for a cut that would bring more structure and volume but instead it did the opposite. read more

Too much $$$ for a bad haircut! I needed a good "curly" haircut and booked an appointment with a certified level stylist. I was really excited to get a fresh start that would make managing my hair easier. I wish I could say I got a good haircut I didn't! I felt like I was on a conveyor belt from start to finish. The stylist spent little time hacking at my hair and never returned to ensure the pieces were the same length. The left side of my hair had many sections that were an inch longer than the rest. Every time I style my hair, I find more randomly cut sections. I was in and out of her chair so fast I didn't even have a chance to warm it up for the next person. Last January and February 2023, I had the worst hair cut in my adult life. The name of the stylist is Iman but she is not pictured on the website. It took me a year to write a review because I am still suffering from the trauma from the way she butchered my hair and was so upset and felt resentment towards Iman. I'm currently growing my hair out because she cut it so short!! I initially came in January 2023 for a curly hair deva cut with a shaped look. I brought in exact photos of how I wanted it to look and I specifically told the stylist that I wanted a "V cut in the back" along with the picture. She ended up doing an A-cut where the hair in the front of my face was long and the back was super short!!!! I HATE that look and I specifically stated NOT do this! I had to go back twice to fix the cut and it just had to keep getting cut shorter. It also gets worse. I asked for PINTURA highlights. This woman used foil and did regular highlights!!! PINTURA highlights are a free-hand technique where you paint the curls one at a time! I went to another stylist to get it corrected and she even said how much of a terrible job she did. There was no contrast in color and it looked like I just colored my entire head with one color. Please beware. If you're going in for Pintura highlights, make sure the stylist is certified in doing this technique and knows what they're doing. You're NOT supposed to used foil for this technique. I'll never go back to Frizzles again. Again, I've been to other places that specialize in Deva curly cuts and I've always had amazing looks and when my hair grew out, the shape always looked lovely. With this short hair "deva" cut that Iman did, my hair is growing out so terrible and uneven even after a year later! Now I have to get a trim to even the ends but I was hoping to have more inches by now. Instead, I have to keep cutting it to even out the shape. Stay away from Iman if you have curly hair. Any other stylist there may do your hair justice but they assigned me to Iman and I'll never go back!! read more

I usually don't stray away from my normal hair stylist, but it was close to the holidays and frizzles had good reviews, so I tried it out. When I got there I was greeted by Jack who took me to his chair. I told him that I wanted a trim and asked that he cut off as little hair as possible. I also informed him that there were layers in my hair. He proceeded to part my hair down the middle and then cut around the bottom. My hair was never sectioned off at any point throughout this process. He proceeded to put some layers in the front of my hair. Before he did this, I told him that I parted my hair on the right side and he said that it didn't matter. In all of 7 minutes, my haircut was over. He then left me in the chair to wait for someone to come over and blow it out. for someone to come over and blow it out. I sat there for so long that another stylist came up to me and asked if I was being helped. A nice young woman came over to blow out my hair but when she was finished, I was unimpressed. Jack came back over, cut some more hair in the back, and told me he was finished. There was no product put into my hair before he sent me off. He never showed me what the back looked like. When I told the person at the front desk that I did not have a good experience, she stared at me blankly and waited for me to insert my card without any sort of response. Naturally, my hair is very curly. Once I washed and styled it for the first time I noticed that the back was uneven. Once parted, you can see that one side is slightly shorter than the other. There are also visible layers on the left, but not the right. I tried to give his salon a chance and sent them an email but I guess my poor experience didn't matter to them, as I NEVER received a response. I will never go to this salon again. read more

Decided to try out this salon for a much needed haircut. I found an opening for Matt on Saturday. The salon is much larger than I expected and it kind of had a factory quality about it. Lots going on and not too much personal attention. Then again it was Saturday so maybe it was just busy. Matt gave me a nice haircut and cleaned up a lot of split ends I had. He was personable and friendly and gave a solid haircut. The prices seem a bit high but maybe average for the area. I may go back, but I do prefer a smaller salon that seems less hectic. read more

I'm crying every time I do my hair. This is by far the worst experience hair cut and color I have ever had and I've done plenty. I thought I would share my story if any new clients were considering this place. Think twice. And this is after sharing my concerns with management who offered a free cut once my hair grows out - I was basically shaved. I asked for my money back because I don't trust going here again. They wouldn't oblige. So I have a horrible haircut which literally makes me sick looking in the mirror. Full story below. I've been coloring my hair and adding purple highlights since 2012. This is by far the worst hair appointment I've ever had since then. First, Elie made a big deal about the all over color I asked for and saying it was the most difficult thing he has ever heard. It was a partial highlight with full color. It was the same thing I did the last time visiting him so I'm not sure what that was about. Being military, I've had my hair done this way too many times to count. Normally, stylists will bleach the areas the purple would go, then wash out, quick blow dry, add the purple, fold up the foil, and then add the full color all over and between the foil pieces. I've had it done so many times. He made me feel so bad about asking to do my hair this way. I don't like confrontation so I just kept saying we could do something else. I should have gotten up and left. He also was not happy that he bought two tubes of the particular color I wanted (I called a head of time to make sure the color was there) but I didn't want to put that many highlights in to use up the tubes. Again, making me feel uncomfortable. He finally figured out how to color my hair, which was a different way than last time. He bleached my hair and then decided to do the all over color at the same time I was waiting for the bleaching process. He did a quick rinse and then he added the semi-permanent purple to my whole head essentially wasting a bunch of color because I did super dark brown/black for the all over color. Hence, I still had to pay for the extra tube. I would have rather bought it and left with it instead of wasting it. It did nothing to the areas that were colored darker. Literally paid for nothing. Then, after showing a picture of how I wanted my hair cut, he cut it, and it looks nothing like what I asked. He chopped off so much of my hair and I can't pull back in a ponytail which is important since i work out a lot. I don't understand how a picture and showing him the length with my hands can be screwed up. I'm horrified every time I look in the mirror. I'm even more horrified of the amount of money I paid for ($250 plus tip) to get be talked to like that and leaving unhappy. It was a waste of a lot of money...and I detest my hair. read more

My New Years resolution was to embrace my natural curly hair, which I have struggled against for years. Most of my struggle has been a result of not knowing what to do to style my hair, lack of a stylistic who is comfortable enough to style and cut naturally curly hair and lack of knowledge, despite trial and error of what products work the best for my texture and curl type. I thankfully stumbled across the name Devacurl online and researched for months the products and training that stylists receive to be devacurl trained. I had previously purchased a few of the products but did not receive the full benefit of the product since I didn't know how to apply it properly. I found that I had used too much gel unevenly and it was a awful case of product build up and crunch. More months passed and My research again led me to Frizzles salon as it is conveniently close to my home. At this point I knew I needed to find someone to care for my curls and teach me about them. (Plus, well overdue for a trim) I called and scheduled an appt with Shawnna with ease and was reassured that I was in the best hands. I really appreciated that Shawnna reached out to me a few days prior to my appointment and prepared me for my visit. She was even available to answer all of my questions prior. On the day of my visit I was warmly greeted and really felt like it wasn't my first visit by the end of the appointment. Shawnna spent time with me explaining to me about my hair type abs texture and her recommendations on how to manage my hair. I feel so confident in her judgement and recommendations! Before leaving she made sure I knew my hair routine so I can maintain my style at home. (She even wrote down her recommendations) I have received endless comments of my curl transformation. Bye-bye flat irons and curlers, you are now a thing of the past! 3 months can't come soon enough for my next trim. The salon is well appointed, clean, comfortable, and on the day I go, a quiet respite from craziness! It's a treat to go there. Elie took the time to explain how to get my hair back into shape. He then did some very light highlights. I've been back three times. My hair is so much better now and has grown out a lot. I can't say how impressed I've been with Elie as well as the staff at Frizzels. Everyone there offered me something to drink and checked on me frequently to ensure I was ok. Mathew Lindsey is extremely unprofessional and represents this business horribly. So I've been married to and have known my wife for quite a few years now and I have never seen her go to a salon before. She was completely proud of the her hair and the length of it as well. We recently moved to Washington D.C. and she wanted to go to a salon for once to get layers and heard good reviews about Frizzles. Only to find out, they completely botched her hair. After coming out of her first appointment she loved it right away however, we both noticed that it was very choppy and it was as noticeable where there was a straight line cut. It's as if she just grabbed a pair of scissors and cut it herself. She called a few days later to see if she could get it fixed which was complimentary so that was great! Only to find out after her appointment once again that the first problem wasn't solved about it being choppy, but they also took off 6-7 inches of her hair. I had to watch her come out balling her eyes out and crying to me at how much she regrets getting her hair styled here. Not to mention, this was apparently the owner that tried to fix her hair. And she specifically stated that she did NOT want the length cut AT ALL. This business will hear about a negative comment and bad review once and forget about it the next day. My wife on the other hand has to deal with this for the next year until her hair can actually grow back to the way it was. It's completely ruined her self confidence and ruined her feelings about going to a salon ever again. This salon may be a great fit for some people but I thought I would at the least mention our story to some people in case they have long hair and wanted it layered. 110% unsatisfied with their work and I wish we could go back in time and have never even thought about this salon in the first place. While I was with Ronny, my daughter was getting a half platinum blond mix with Layla. She took so much time and care because of the previous hair color and it looked amazing. I have been fortunate enough to find someone each time I moved who can cut my hair. Unfortunately, my experience with Shawnna was disappointing. I clearly stated I wanted to maintain my hair length and showed her photos for reference. Despite this, she cut 4 inches off and more. She did not even ask to verify if cutting that much was okay. I haven't had a hair cut in 10 years. I've also just recently started transitioning my hair back to curly because I used to flat iron my hair for 7 years. My hair was extremely damaged and frizzy!! Before I got my devacut I tried twist outs and slowly trimmed off damaged ends. Yesterday I got my first devacut and hair cut in a long time and it turned out better than I hoped. My curls have never been defined. I thought some parts would stay wavy and some parts straight. But after my devacut it was alllllll curly and defined. My hair was QUENCHED !! For the first time in forever. Dawn changed my hair. She also got rid of my horrible triangle head and perfectly shaped my hair. She had other clients come in but that doesn't mean she will neglect your hair. The whole process was about 3 hours. I paid 110$ for my devacut. A devacut at frizzles is $85+. I came to Frizzles for the first time. If you are looking for an apathetic salon, this is the place for you!! The front desk guy didn't bother to get off his phone to greet/check me in. There was not a single staff member smiling or friendly. I showed my stylist a picture of what I wanted and got nothing close to that. Luckily she cut off an extra 2-3 inches so I can't even get it fixed elsewhere. Overall, an expensive crappy haircut in a place with an overall melancholy feel.
